Supporting your community in the moments that matter

Altadena Town Council Chair Victoria KnappOur partnership with GoFundMe.org came about in such an organic way, rooted in a shared commitment to helping those in need. I’m incredibly grateful for their support and their willingness to step up for our community in the aftermath of the Eaton Fire which devastated Altadena. Now, as we look ahead to long-term recovery, I’m hopeful that together, we’ll continue to make a real difference for the Altadenans who need it most.

How does a fundraiser get added to the centralized hub?

As fundraisers are reviewed and verified, our team regularly updates the centralized hub. Fundraisers are displayed in a random order on the hub, to provide equal visibility to those in need.
How can I ensure a fundraiser is trustworthy before sharing it?

Our top priority is ensuring the platform is a safe and trusted place to give and receive help. To protect against misuse, we have a world-class Trust & Safety team, innovative technology, partnerships with payment industry leaders, and the GoFundMe Giving Guarantee. You can learn more about our Trust & Safety practices on our safety hub.
Our Trust & Safety team works to verify fundraisers, so people can have confidence that their donation will reach the intended recipient. For our Trust & Safety team to verify a fundraiser, it must be clear who the organizer is, as well as the person, business, or charity they are raising funds for, the organizer’s relationship to the recipient of the funds, and how the funds will be used.
How does GoFundMe ensure that donations go to the right place?

GoFundMe has a dedicated Trust & Safety team that reviews fundraisers to ensure funds are directed to those in need. Donations are processed by our payment partners, held, and then released only to the person named as the recipient of the funds (the beneficiary). Before funds are transferred to the beneficiary, their personal information must be verified. *If any questions arise in the review, our processors hold the funds until the recipient is verified.
Can I create a GoFundMe on behalf of someone else?

Yes, you can create a fundraiser on behalf of an individual, family, or organization. If you create a fundraiser on behalf of a nonprofit organization, donations will be tax-deductible, and the funds will be transferred directly to the charity.
How quickly can funds be accessed in a crisis?

Most funds are available within a few business days, ensuring quick access to support when it matters most.
What happens if a fundraiser doesn’t meet its goal?

Donations are still delivered to the beneficiary, even if the fundraiser doesn’t meet its target amount.
What are the fees on GoFundMe?

There is no fee to start or manage a fundraiser. The only fee on GoFundMe is a standard transaction fee of 2.9% + $0.30 per donation, which allows us to pay the payment processors and safely deliver funds. GoFundMe is primarily powered by voluntary tips and relies on these optional contributions from donors to maintain our quality customer service, trust and safety protections, and world-class fundraising technology.
Will my GoFundMe fundraiser impact the ability to get FEMA benefits?

According to FEMA’s website, “By law, FEMA cannot duplicate benefits you receive from another source. However, there are many different types of assistance available through FEMA and we review each application to ensure you receive the aid for which you are eligible.
If you receive money from a GoFundMe page for a specific disaster related expense–such as home repairs, funeral expenses or other emergency needs—you may not be able to receive FEMA aid for the same expense. For example, if you receive donations to clean up storm damage to your home, FEMA may not be able to also grant you financial assistance for home clean up. We encourage all survivors to apply for assistance regardless so we can review your specific case.”
What if I have a concern about a fundraiser?

You can report a fundraiser at any time and our team will promptly review it. GoFundMe has zero tolerance for the misuse of our platform and cooperates with law enforcement investigations of those accused of wrongdoing.
What is GoFundMe.org?

GoFundMe.org launched in 2017 as a vehicle to transform charitable donations in a crisis into fast relief for people who have lost everything. GoFundMe.org’s mission is to quickly mobilize and distribute donations for individuals and communities impacted by crises, natural disasters, and social inequalities.
