Please help us rescue Jill and Mango!
These two local (and very sweet) cats from the neighborhood are finally off the street and out of the cold. But we desperately need your help to pay for their medical bills and care.
Greenpoint Cats has been nothing short of a miracle in helping me so far, but we urgently need donations to pay for vet examinations, emergency medical care, medications, dental treatment, food, and supplies.
If you’re able to donate anything, it will make a difference, and we’re so grateful you’re here for us. <3
Backstory:
JillyBean:
Jill is a beautiful little black cat I’ve been feeding everyday for the past 3.5 years. During that time, I’ve rescued and rehomed three other cats, and helped others with a few more.
I took over feeding Jill from a really sweet woman who had to move, but stayed as long as she could to rescue all of the cats on her block first. The only one who was impossible to catch was Jill.
I promised I’d take care of her, and I kept that promise :]
For about a year, she kept her distance. She would eat near me, but not any closer. Then, she started taking me on little walks around the block after dinner (I’m not kidding!) She would happily run alongside me under parked cars and meowing every few steps to check in. One day, one of our walks ended on Nassau between Morgan and Hausman. I attempted a very light, (and successful!) pet on her back. I think both of us were shocked.
From that day, she let me pet her more often, until finally, she was fully snuggling into my hands and or coat. This girl deserved a warm fluffy bed and a safe loving place to sleep, not to be sleeping up under cars trying to stay warm.
So I kept trying to bring her home. Then finally, the night after this most recent ice storm, the entire sidewalk was frozen. But she was there waiting for me right on time, and excited to see me. I put down the carrier again, hoping maybe this time would be the time. And it was! After all these years, Jilly is finally out of the cold, away from cars, and unpredictable people. She’s finally safe.
Mango
Mango is a beautiful ginger boy who first started coming by early in the summer. Greenpoint Cats was amazing enough to get him neutered, and since then I've been feeding him daily along with Jilly. At first he kept his distance until one day he saw me scratching between Jill’s ears and she was purring and happy and he came over and turned around like he was waiting for me to pet him. So I did. Since then, he has gotten endless amounts of pets and snuggles. In return, he has the loudest, most comforting purr.
Initially he and Jill didn't get along. In fact, they got fairly territorial over me (which if I'm being totally honest was pretty flattering…) but as the temperature dropped I started to notice that instead of trying to intimidate each other they actually started head butting each other. (for cats, this is a sign of trust and affection.) Something had changed, and their once tense bond, was now affectionate and positive.
When I brought Jill inside I had her for about a week, and during that time when I went back to go feed Mango, I couldn't find him. Jill wasn’t there, so his time table changed. Thanks to help from a community member who quickly fell in love with mango (and nicknamed him butters :] ) I finally was able to find mango and bring him home too. As soon as I brought him inside he left the carrier and went on to a soft bed that I got for him he immediately started purring and kneading the bed. I can't recall the time I've ever seen a happier cat. I carried the bed over to Jill and she saw a little foot sticking out of the bed and she sniffed it and recognized it was mango, and the two have been inseparable ever since. There are two beds but they choose to sleep in one by choice and snuggle.
It's really been such a gift to be able to interact with these cats every day. Even more so to earn their trust and their love. I want to help them be as safe, loved, healthy, and happy as they deserve, and donations from you, and this wonderful community will make that possible. <3
