Lily was tossed into a filthy, windowless basement of a Greenpoint deli to earn her keep as a mouser and has known nothing but neglect for the first 2 years of her life. She was rescued, terrified and starving, on October 6th. Since then, we've been doing our best to show her that there's more to life than what she's seen - sun-filled rooms, cozy beds, plenty of food, catnip and affection. Unfortunately, the years of neglect caught up with her, and her health took a dramatic downturn when she was diagnosed with advanced pyometra - a painful and life-threatening uterine infection that occurs in unspayed female cats.
On November 14th, Lily underwent an emergency ovariohysterectomy and is currently recovering from the surgery. It was only after the procedure that a tech spotted a lump on her mammary gland. The mass was biopsied and we are awaiting cytology results, hoping that the growth is benign.
She also has stage 2 dental disease, which will be addressed as soon as her most urgent health issues are resolved.
You would think that two years in darkness and solitude would've broken Lily's spirit, but such is not the case. She is inquisitive, smart and fierce. She still battles severe anxiety coupled with physical pain, but when she feels comfortable, she will greet you with loud purrs, adorable meows and headbutting. We are confident that Lily can become a happy, healthy and loving housecat - she just needs a little bit of help to get there. She deserves a break after all the loneliness, trauma and suffering she's endured in her short life.
All funds will go to Lily's ongoing veterinary care. If there's anything leftover, it will benefit other activities of Greenpoint Cats - TNR (Trap, Neuter and Return), community cat care and assistance with foster care and adoptions to cats that qualify. We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization run completely by volunteers in the area.
