Why is charitable giving so important during Ramadan?
During the holy month of Ramadan, charitable giving is highly encouraged as it multiplies good deeds and fosters compassion within the Islamic community.
The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) emphasized in a hadith that generosity during this blessed month brings immense reward, with all acts of worship multiplied during this time. This is especially true in the last sacred 10 days of Ramadan or during Laylatul Qadr (night of power), where the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) sent down the Qur’an.
What is zakat?
Zakat, one of the Five Pillars of Islam, is a vital form of charitable giving and stands among the most significant acts of charity in the Islamic faith. According to the Islamic calendar, many Muslims choose to give their zakat during the holy month of Ramadan, when generosity and compassion are especially emphasized.
Traditionally, zakat is calculated as 2.5% of a Muslim’s savings and financial assets—excluding daily living expenses—and is given to support those less fortunate and strengthen the Islamic community.
There are other types of charitable giving in Islam, too. Sadaqah, meaning “righteousness,” is a voluntary form of charity, while Lillah, meaning “for Allah,” refers to voluntary charity given solely for the sake of Allah (SWT).
