<div>On May 30, Roberto, a loving husband and devoted father, was violently taken from his family by ICE on his way to work. He is the primary provider for his wife, Beatriz, and their 8-year-old son — and now this family is facing a crisis they never imagined.

<div>That morning, ICE agents ordered Roberto out of his car, put him in wrist restraints, forced him into their vehicle, and ripped his shirt in the process. He was taken with nothing but the clothes on his back. Beatriz had no idea where he was, and it took her two days to locate his car.

<div>Roberto was detained in Baltimore for three days, forced to sleep on the floor. He was then transferred to Virginia for one night before being sent to Louisiana. During his detention, he was given nothing but bread and ham to eat. The water at the Louisiana facility smells and tastes like bleach. Three facilities later, he still has not been issued any clothes and remains in the ripped shirt he was wearing when he was detained. He has been given no opportunity to call a lawyer, no chance to file habeas corpus, and no due process.

<div>Roberto is a gentle, hardworking man who has always put his family first. He worked two jobs to support Beatriz and their son. He and his little boy shared a beautiful bond — playing basketball, going to the park, swimming, eating ice cream, laughing, and being silly together.

Their son is completely distraught and cries for his father every day, unable to understand why this happened. Beatriz works part-time, but her income is not enough to cover rent, food, and basic household bills. On top of her grief, she lives in constant fear that she could be taken next, leaving their little boy without either parent in the United States.

<div>Early one Monday morning in May, Lucia* and her husband Diego* left home for a doctor’s appointment. Lucia was pregnant with the couples’ first child, due in July. On their way home, they planned to stop at a local restaurant to celebrate another healthy check-up for the baby. But they never made it to lunch.

<div><strong>ICE agents stopped Diego and Lucia and handcuffed them both on the street. After some time, they abducted Diego and left Lucia alone, instructing her to sit in the back of the truck and not move. Terrified, she did as she was told. When the agents left, Lucia was alone. She was 7-months pregnant and doesn’t drive. </strong>

<div>Thankfully, some bystanders helped Lucia get back home. ICE put Diego into detention and within two weeks he was deported to Guatemala.

<div>Diego had been living here and working as a house painter for 14 years. Lucia has been here for 7 years. The two are from the same small village in Guatemala, but they met here and have built a life together by working hard.

<div>The couple was happily preparing for the arrival of their first baby, a girl. Diego painted her nursery pink and was in the process of creating a mural on the wall beside the crib—a beautiful scene, highlighting the expected baby’s name, *Sol.

<div>Now Lucia is preparing for birth and motherhood alone, without Diego’s loving presence and support.  She is due in just a few weeks. And with the loss of Diego’s income, she is struggling to support herself and pay her expenses (rent, food, transportation), as well as supplies she needs for the baby.

<div>Sara* knew something was wrong when Manuel* stopped responding to her texts and calls. When he didn’t return home, she went looking for him--and found his car abandoned on the side of the road with the keys locked inside. Thanks to the kindness of strangers, she retrieved Manuel’s vehicle and pieced the story together: Manuel is an Uber driver–ICE detained him while he was working and took him into custody in Baltimore. Sara and her six-year-old son, Luis*, were left alone, terrified, without income, and wondering when–or if–they would see Manuel again.

<div>Then two weeks later, Manuel came home. He was released from ICE detention with a pending hearing. The family is overwhelmed with gratitude to be reunited—but they will need to fight to keep Manuel home. A legal case for asylum is their only hope. The emotional and financial toll of Manuel’s detention have been enormous and they’ll need our help to stay together and rebuild.

<div>Manuel, Sara, and Luis had moved to Riverdale just a few months ago to start a new life. They planned to enroll Luis in the local elementary school in the fall to start first grade. A few weeks ago, he and Sara had put down a deposit on a new apartment in Riverdale and were set to move June 1. They even painted the apartment together. Then on May 30, Manuel was taken by ICE.

<div>Manuel is the family's sole provider. After his kidnapping, Sara was unable to put the first month’s rent down on the new apartment. After explaining the desperate situation to the landlord, he rented the apartment to someone else and refused to return their deposit. It was a heartbreaking blow during an already painful time. The family has been renting a single room in someone else's home–with no furniture, and no bed. It was always meant to be temporary. Once Manuel is reunited with his family for good, they plan to find a new place to call home.

At approximately 6:40 a.m., unmarked vehicles aggressively surrounded their car, nearly causing a collision. Joel, the driver, and another passenger were forced out of the vehicle. Hours passed with no information, and it was not until 5 p.m. that I learned he had been taken by ICE.

Joel was held for five days in Baltimore in a facility not approved for detention, where he reports being denied food and water and forced to sleep on the floor. He was then transferred to Pennsylvania for four days, Louisiana for three days, back to Pennsylvania for one night, and ultimately deported to Guatemala without the opportunity to say goodbye to his baby daughter.

After nearly two months in detention under inhumane conditions and being deprived of medical care, Arturo was deported to Guatemala. This weekend, he was rushed to the ER. Due to the medical neglect he suffered in detention his condition has deteriorated. The doctors say his intestine is on the verge of rupture and needs immediate surgery. Arturo will require over a month of hospitalization, and two surgeries. The total cost is $12,000. His family is able to cover $5,000 from modest savings, but they need our help to for the remaining $7,000. His family misses him deeply and are heartbroken not to be by his side.
