After experiencing extortion and violence at the hands of local gangs in Guatemala, Maricel and Arturo* sought safety for their family here in the U.S. Now, Arturo’s health is deteriorating in ICE detention and the family is in urgent need of support for legal fees to get him home safely, and to cover rent and living expenses while they navigate life without him.

Arturo’s health is at risk

Arturo was due to undergo surgery this week for a large hernia. Just days before, he was taken by ICE. Now, he is being held in a detention facility out of state, and is not receiving any medical attention. Arturo also has Type II diabetes, which requires careful management and his health is deteriorating in the neglect of ICE detention. His wife, Maricel, and their three children are very concerned.

All donations will go toward legal support to get Arturo the care he needs, and toward living expenses for the family who are struggling to make ends meet with the loss of Arturo’s income.

Loving members of our community

This young family has built a life here in Hyattsville. Maricel and Arturo both worked hard–Maricel for an event planning company, and Arturo at a junkyard. Their children, Rosalia, 16, and Gerardo, 10, enrolled in school in Hyattsville, and the family joined a local church where Maricel volunteers regularly, visiting sick community members. And two years ago, the family welcomed their youngest son, Mario.

Arturo was kidnapped by ICE on his way home from an overnight work shift. The loss of his income has intensified the family’s crisis. Maricel has a part-time job, but her salary is not enough. Ahora, la salud de Arturo se está deteriorando en el centro de detención de ICE y la familia necesita urgentemente ayuda para sufragar los gastos legales que les permitan traerlo a casa sano y salvo, así como para cubrir el alquiler y los gastos de manutención mientras se las arreglan sin él.

Arturo tenía programada una operación esta semana para tratar una hernia grave. Apenas unos días antes, fue detenido por ICE. Ahora se encuentra recluido en un centro de detención fuera del estado y no está recibiendo atención médica alguna. Arturo también padece diabetes tipo II, que requiere un control minucioso, y su salud se está deteriorando debido a la negligencia del centro de detención de ICE. Su esposa, Maricel, y sus tres hijos están muy preocupados.

Esta joven familia se ha labrado una vida aquí, en Hyattsville. Tanto Maricel como Arturo trabajaban duro: Maricel en una empresa de organización de eventos y Arturo en un desguace. Sus hijos, Rosalia, de 16 años, y Gerardo, de 10, se matricularon en un colegio de Hyattsville, y la familia se unió a una iglesia local en la que Maricel colabora como voluntaria habitualmente, visitando a los miembros enfermos de la comunidad. Y hace dos años, la familia dio la bienvenida a su hijo menor, Mario.

Arturo fue detenido por ICE cuando regresaba a casa tras un turno de noche. La pérdida de sus ingresos ha agravado la crisis de la familia. Maricel tiene un trabajo a tiempo parcial, pero su sueldo no es suficiente.
