Direct Support for Minneapolis Families After Tragedy

<div>Holly (Philippi) Gustner, daughter of Jeane (Held) Philippi and Brad Philippi, needs to have a life-changing surgery on July 28th that she has to pay for out of pocket. She had to pay $17K just to schedule it, and will be traveling to St. Louis for at least 4 days to have the surgery and a follow-up visit. We welcome and appreciate anything you can give to help Holly's family in this time! I'm Holly's aunt and started this fundraiser to help her out. Here's more detail about why the surgery is needed, in Holly's words:

<div>In my early 20's, pain began in my pelvis, lower abdomen, Lt hip and thigh. It first began with chiropractic care and massage to try to resolve my pain. With no relief, I then began doctoring with both OB/GYN and Urology to try to better understand what was happening. At that time, I was diagnosed with endometriosis and a urethral diverticulum, which I had surgically repaired. After surgery, the pain continued and began to intensify with pain at times becoming unbearable. After trying several treatments/diagnoses, I was told they were no longer sure what was going on and they suggested I see an orthopedic doctor to see if they pain was coming from a tear in my hip. After several other diagnostic tests/injections, I was told they did not believe this was an orthopedic problem and was referred off again to see a neurologist. The neurologist I saw also performed several tests and prescribed nerve medications to try to help me with the pain.

<div>This cycle of continual doctoring has continued off and on for me since, with no one answers as to why and where the pain is coming from. After 18 years of no answers, continual research, I sent my case off to a peripheral nerve specialist in St. Louis Missouri, praying that they would be willing to take me as a patient. Dr. David Brown at Neuropax Clinic in St. Louis reviewed my case and agreed to take me as a patient. I was able to do a virtual visit with him first to discuss what he thought would be the best next step. He decided doing a series of diagnostic nerve blocks into my abdomen, Lt hip and groin is what I need to do next. I flew down to St. Louis and received the nerve blocks with great success with pain relief. At that time, he said that surgery was the next step. I will be flying back to St. Louis on 7/28 to have an Ilioinguinal and Iliohypogastric neurectomy with burial, and a decompression of my lateral femoral nerve. I will be off work 4-6 weeks after for recovery.

<div>Because this medical procedure is out of network our insurance will not cover the cost. We had to pay $17,000 up front just to schedule the procedure. Surgery is scheduled for July 28th in St Louis MO. We will be staying for 4 days in St Louis to see the surgeon for a follow up appointment. It’s unknown if another procedure will be needed. Prayers and assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Help Holly's Journey to Pain Relief

<div>My dad, Chach Faris, got into a motorcycle accident and broke his ankle, having to go to the emergency room. <div>Walking out of that food bank in tears, one of my sober sisters who coincidentally works there turned the corner and held me while I cried on his shoulder. Sometimes rolling with the punches just feels like too much to bear.

Fire Recovery Fund for the Solomon Family

<div>I’m Nicole and I’m organizing this campaign on behalf of Lauren, Jesse, Margo, and their beautiful new baby Luca Winter Rosenthal.

<div>Luca was born in the afternoon on Friday, December 6. He was immediately taken to the NICU because he couldn’t pump his little heart on his own and he presented with potential signs of brain injury during labor. Doctors in Maine immediately intervened and he was placed on life support and put into a medically induced coma as they began a 72 hour cooling procedure called therapeutic hypothermia. After close monitoring of his heart, he was transferred to Boston’s Children’s Hospital via Life Flight so that we could receive critical care and life saving treatment.

<div>Lauren and Jesse have been back and forth between South Portland and Boston so they can be close to little Luca while trying to maintain some normalcy for Margo. It has been a scary time and they are taking it day by day. What we know now is that doctors are working hard to figure out what’s going on and keep teeny Luca’s heart working, and that several days in, he’s making positive progress.

My Dad's Cancer Battle

Her Mom, Tanisha, credits her with being a fighter; A kid who has handled life's struggles with strength, bravery and <strong>the</strong> most infectious smile. Lovinity is now in the fight of her life. Lovinity was recently diagnosed with cancer, a high-grade glioma which is a tumor in her brain tissue. This diagnosis has come quickly and with many complications already. It is still unsure what the long-term treatment plan will be, but she is waiting for the surgery to place her port so radiation can begin.

<div>I have worked at GoFundMe for nearly 11 years, and during my tenure, I have had the extreme privilege of helping to tell the stories of local change makers all around the world. I cannot overstate how inspired I am on a daily basis by how these folks show up in the world, and the impact they make for their communities, and causes they care about. They are truly my heroes.

<div>For a long time, I have felt a dormant wish inside of me to be more like them, and to start an initiative of my own. I finally asked myself who I was waiting around for permission from to start—so I gave myself that permission.

<div>So many of the organizations and community heroes I admire do such critical work to provide the essentials to communities that need it, tackling things like food security, erasing lunch debt at schools, filling classrooms with supplies, providing shelter to unhoused folks, feeding families, etc. I started to think about where I could make an impact, and do something that support all of this amazing and critical support being organized—and I landed on joy.

<div>My organization is called Presents with Purpose, and its mission is to deliver moments of joy to individuals during celebratory moments such as birthdays and holidays. I plan to partner with existing organizations who are providing the essentials to help identify people who could use some celebrating, and try to include dignity of choice whenever possible so that they're receiving something they really want, and that will truly bring joy.

<div>This is quite a big goal and undertaking, and there are so many steps to take. A conversation with one of my community change maker hero friends, Dion Dawson, inspired me on how to get started: just start.

<div>So my first step is to raise the money I need to start providing moments of joy through gifts! I am going to start by doing, and take the nonprofit registration steps as I go. But nothing is stopping me from starting now—I even have a partnering organization already, to provide gifts to a community in Georgia in the winter :) As soon as you say it out loud, entropy begins. It's pretty magical.

<div>Welcome to the collective hub for <a href="https://www.helpmauirise.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Help Maui Rise</a>, the spreadsheet you may have seen circulating that houses the stories of families who have lost their homes and livelihoods in the Maui Wildfires. What started out as a simple Google sheet to share within our inner circles has evolved into a growing resource of over 1,600 affected loved ones, all vetted by our team and reviewed by GoFundMe.

<div>In Hawai'i, community is everything, and when the fires began on August 8th, we knew we needed to take action. As community members, our only wish was to provide aid to the displaced 'ohana of Lāhainā &amp; Kula as quickly and directly as possible. The Maui fires took nearly 3,000 homes and businesses. One hundred and one were confirmed dead and many remained unaccounted for. Families were given no warning and sometimes only seconds to escape, many of them with only the clothes on their backs.

<div>Who Qualifies for Grants:

<li><strong>Proof of Displacement</strong>: Applicants must provide proof of displacement due to the wildfires.
</li>
<li><strong>Income Consideration</strong>: We prioritize households with incomes up to 300% of the federal HHS poverty level for Hawai'i. This means families with incomes up to three times the federal poverty level are given priority to account for Hawai'i's high cost of living.
</li>
<li><strong>Receipt Agreement</strong>: Applicants must agree to provide receipts as they spend the grant funds.
</li>

<div>We will distribute grants based on need stated by the applicant and available funds, with initial grants of up to $1,000 per family and potential additional grants of up to $11,000 as funds allow and as needs are assessed. <div>Starting a sport can be intimidating for people, so our club works as an initiation, all while building relationships and getting people active. Through members' contributions, we’ve gathered pickleball paddles and equipment to give newcomers an approachable introduction to pickleball. When someone signs up, we introduce them to everyone and offer them a free lesson.

<div>The courts will not only help our club but will directly impact the middle schoolers at Lemon Grove Middle School during the week. Currently, they’re using a tennis court with faded lines and dangerous infrastructure covered in rust.

<div>If you don’t know Lemon Grove, it’s an underserved area in San Diego. The city can hardly afford to run itself, which means there’s little room for investment in recreation or the health of our youth, seniors, or families. Covid closed our senior center, and our recreation building has been shut to the public for 12 years. This leaves many people severely lacking the resources to live a healthy life.

<div>We realize as a community that if we want to speed up the change, we’d like to see, we need to do it ourselves and call upon our friends to help us make something beautiful.

<div>As some of you know, my Tia Baby, also known as Mercedes, has been going through medical issues. Unfortunately, things took a turn for the worse when she was diagnosed with liver cancer. Most recently, she was given some very unfortunate news from her doctors that her end of life was soon approaching. She is now in hospice care surrounded by family. All of us are deeply saddened at this situation and are spending this time reflecting on the impact she has made on our lives. However, my aunt’s faith in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ has helped her stay strong throughout all she has endured this past year. My aunt is a God-loving woman who touched not only our lives, but everyone she came across.

We Love You Tia Baby!

I never thought I be in this position, and it's embarrassing to have to ask for help  for me and my son from total strangers. But I've seen so many other people find help here, so I said "hey what the heck".  What can I lose, I've already lost everything. <br /><br />My ex-boyfriend  kicked me and our five-year-old son out of our apartment after getting physical with me (choking, pulling my braids out, choking, breaking things throughout the house) and threatening me  in front of him. Now we are staying with family members, I can't return home because the place is in his name, and I'm afraid for our safety. This year I am inspired to do something to bring hope and healing to those facing this disease.
