<div>After many years of writing plays in and about Appalachia, I’m seeing my first-ever full production at a major festival, sheATL. This is one of the biggest new play festivals in the country dedicated to women, trans, and nonbinary writers – right here in the Southeast.

<div>The crew behind dog song is thrilled to bring the play to Atlanta stages – but to do so, we need your help!

<div>Your donation will mainly support compensation for a scrappy crew of artists in the South. sheATL generously covers most major production costs, but we are responsible for getting the artists paid. Our goal of $5,000 by August 1st will pay six actors, as well as the production team, for their time and materials. It’s hard to make a living as a theatre artist, and we believe in paying our people for their work as best we can!

What does it mean to seek freedom from the strictures of society, and is it even possible? What is nature, when everything is owned by somebody? Can you lie to yourself forever? <div>A young couple take to the mountains to live out their dreams of pure, clean off-grid living. Unfortunately, their lack of technical skill is a little bit of an issue. Then there's the rent they owe their beautiful, mysterious landlady. Also, the coyotes that howl on the ridge seem to be getting bolder....but little obstacles like that never stopped a perfect couple on their homesteading journey. Right?? Besides, the earth is speaking if you care to listen. Right????

<div>Katie Myers is a playwright, journalist, audio producer, and misc. writer in the mountain South. She's developed work through the Chattanooga Theatre Centre, Next Exit Productions, Primary Stages Echoes Writer's Group, Tennessee Stage Company New Play Festival, and Tennessee Playwrights Studio. She also has participated in the Appalachian Writer’s Workshop, and was awarded a Kristi Havens Memorial Fellowship at Sundress Academy for the Arts. Her work has appeared in Grist, NPR, and the BBC, among others. She writes about workers, ghosts, memory, wilderness, explosions, and smalltown politics.

<div><strong>My sister, Stacey Cornett, and her partner of 7 years, Ryan Walker need our help! After being turned away by 2 ERs, Ryan finally received urgent surgery to repair a severed nerve in his dominant hand. Now he faces up to a year of recovery, unable to work and uncertain if full function will return.</strong>

<div>Two weeks ago, Ryan’s life changed in an instant. An accident left him with a severed ulnar nerve in his right hand. After a week of excruciating pain and being dismissed by multiple doctors, he finally saw a surgeon who confirmed the seriousness of his injury and performed urgent repair surgery.

<div>Nerve healing is slow — just a millimeter a day. Healing doesn’t begin until after 1 month, and may take 6–12 months before Ryan knows how much use of his hand will return. Until then, he must endure months of physical therapy and faces the possibility of having to change careers entirely. For someone whose work and passions depend on his hands, this is devastating.

<div><strong>Overnight, Ryan and Stacey lost half their household income.</strong> Stacey works a full time job and a side gig, but their basic expenses (housing, groceries, utilities, transportation, and medical) are more than double what she makes. On top of this, Stacey is also scheduled for major surgery before year’s end.

I was swimming at Walden Pond and floaties became an amoeba-looking black shadow that grew over my eye as I rushed from hospital to hospital as my world went dark.

Since puberty, chest dysphoria has been a constant source of discomfort, both physically and mentally. It took me decades to truly understand who I am and why the reflection in the mirror never felt quite right.

But binding comes at a cost, both physically on my ribs, back, and neck, and emotionally on my sense of peace. I’m living somewhat paycheck-to-paycheck, but I’ve been lucky enough to be pre-approved for lines of credit to help finance my surgery. Still, the full cost will be around <strong>$9,100</strong>, and is out of reach on my own. This total includes the surgery, hospital fees, required pathology, and post-op care.

<div>This surgery is much more than a procedure. To me, it will be a homecoming. A chance to see myself in the mirror and finally recognize the person staring back. Or how some people unknowingly spread light and joy to every person they come in contact with? Some people ease your worries with just the warmth of their voice as the sound of their laughter shifts the energy of a whole room. Colin is without health insurance and will be facing what comes his way as self pay while actively looking for coverage. <div>Colin and his wife are DEDICATED, career long members of the service industry. They work their tails off with palpable joy to serve their community. Colin as a hairstylist and Abigale as a bartender and server. What they are experiencing on the healthcare end of things is unfortunately a classic American story. They work really hard and make enough to pay their bills, take loving care of their precious son Walter (who is 2!), enjoy their life and not qualify for any government help with medical insurance…but not necessarily enough to afford all of that plus $1200 a month to cover only two people with a plan that has a high deductible, a high out of pocket max, high copays anyway.. So Colin went the extra mile to completely change his lifestyle. He changed his diet, began working out 5 days a week, drinks more water than a camel, eats healthy foods and even takes walks outside during his breaks at work. He decided if he couldn’t have insurance at this time he would take disease prevention and caring for his health and body very seriously. He is in the best shape of his life and ready to fight!

<p>I have run Skid Row Garage for the last 12 years.  Skid Row Garage is a DIY music venue in York, PA.  I have hosted bands from all over the country and all over the world in a tiny room here in York. We have built a community of local musicians and music fans that bands and artists rave about everywhere they go. Recently, the venue was forced to closed.  Skid Row Garage cannot continue as it has for the last 12 years. We can no long longer operate as a DIY space.  I know how devastating this feels to many people.  This will affect our scene locally here in south central Pennsylvania, as well as nationally.

<p>I am not seeing this as a defeat. I am seeing as as an incredible new opportunity; an opportunity to grow this idea that I have fostered into something bigger and better for everyone involved.   We are receiving messages of support from far and wide, and I hope to ask each of you to help me take Skid Row to the next level.

<p>I am going to open a new Skid Row Garage as a legitimate venue. I am going to give local musicians a chance to play to a bigger crowd. We will need to build a stage, storage rooms, update the wiring and plumbing, install fire suppression, and, of course, build a suitable sound system. This is on top of the rental costs of the building itself, utilities, legal fees, and insurance costs, as well as all the unforeseen expenses that are sure to arise.
