My play, dog song, is heading to Atlanta this summer!

After many years of writing plays in and about Appalachia, I’m seeing my first-ever full production at a major festival, sheATL. This is one of the biggest new play festivals in the country dedicated to women, trans, and nonbinary writers – right here in the Southeast.

The crew behind dog song is thrilled to bring the play to Atlanta stages – but to do so, we need your help!

Your donation will mainly support compensation for a scrappy crew of artists in the South. sheATL generously covers most major production costs, but we are responsible for getting the artists paid. Our goal of $5,000 by August 1st will pay six actors, as well as the production team, for their time and materials. It’s hard to make a living as a theatre artist, and we believe in paying our people for their work as best we can!

I’m so excited to bring this play to a wider audience. Dog song is an insane little play about love, power, land, marital resentment, coyote behavior, and off-grid living.

This play asks questions like, is there any good way to be in relationship with the natural world and do no harm? What does it mean to seek freedom from the strictures of society, and is it even possible? What is nature, when everything is owned by somebody? Can you lie to yourself forever? And, what does it really mean to build the life you want?

Synopsis:

A young couple take to the mountains to live out their dreams of pure, clean off-grid living. Unfortunately, their lack of technical skill is a little bit of an issue. Then there's the rent they owe their beautiful, mysterious landlady. Also, the coyotes that howl on the ridge seem to be getting bolder....but little obstacles like that never stopped a perfect couple on their homesteading journey. Right?? Besides, the earth is speaking if you care to listen. Right????

Playwright’s Bio:

Katie Myers is a playwright, journalist, audio producer, and misc. writer in the mountain South. She's developed work through the Chattanooga Theatre Centre, Next Exit Productions, Primary Stages Echoes Writer's Group, Tennessee Stage Company New Play Festival, and Tennessee Playwrights Studio. She also has participated in the Appalachian Writer’s Workshop, and was awarded a Kristi Havens Memorial Fellowship at Sundress Academy for the Arts. Her work has appeared in Grist, NPR, and the BBC, among others. She writes about workers, ghosts, memory, wilderness, explosions, and smalltown politics.
