<div>Our community is grieving the heartbreaking loss of Ronell Johnson, a beloved musician, friend, colleague, and family member whose life and artistry touched so many.

<div>For nearly 30 years, Ronell was part of the Preservation Hall family, performing multiple times a week at Preservation Hall in New Orleans and traveling the world with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band. Night after night, city after city, Ronell carried the spirit of New Orleans with him, sharing the music with audiences near and far.

<div>Ronell had that rare and beautiful gift great musicians carry: he could lift a room the moment he began to play. He brought smiles to people’s faces and joy into their hearts. His musicianship was deep, soulful, generous, and full of life. He expressed love through his music, through his craft, and through the way he showed up for the people around him.

<div>We all know that Ronell was a deeply giving person, someone who so often put others ahead of himself. He gave freely through his music, his presence, his spirit, and his heart. Now it is our time to give back to someone who gave all of us such a great gift: joy, music, and love.

<div>At this very difficult time, Ronell’s family is carrying the emotional weight of his passing while also facing the financial burden of funeral expenses and medical care. As a community, we have both an opportunity and a responsibility to surround them with love, support, and relief.

<div>We are raising funds to help cover Ronell’s funeral arrangements and outstanding medical expenses, and to give his family some measure of peace as they navigate the days ahead. No family should have to carry these burdens alone, especially while grieving someone so deeply loved.

<div>To everyone who supported us before—your kindness is the reason we made it this far. Truly. We would not have been able to get through those dark moments without you.

<div>My son is only 29 years old and living with severe disabilities. He is a quadriplegic and also suffers from advanced CRPS, a condition that causes constant, excruciating pain. Despite everything, he keeps going—but right now, we are facing another devastating setback.
</div>

<div>His power wheelchair—his independence, his mobility, his freedom—was destroyed at a previous living situation. It wasn’t something we could prevent, and it’s now beyond repair.
</div>

</div>
<div>Right now, he’s stuck in a basic manual hospital chair—and it’s causing real harm.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>This chair has no proper support, no stability, and no way for him to reposition himself. Because of that, he’s experiencing increased, constant pain, especially with his CRPS, where even the slightest pressure can feel unbearable. He can’t shift his weight, which puts him at risk for pressure sores and skin breakdown.

<div>Even something as simple as moving a short distance becomes exhausting and painful.
</div>

</div>
<div>The other day, he tried to do something most of us wouldn’t think twice about—reaching for a cup.
</div>
<div>From that chair, he struggled just to move his body into position. What should have taken seconds turned into a painful effort, and even then, he couldn’t do it without help.
</div>

</div>
<div>And the hardest part… is what daily life looks like right now.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>He doesn’t have a safe way to transfer. To bathe, he has to somehow get from the toilet down onto the shower floor, because we don’t have a shower chair or any proper equipment. There is no safe way for him to sit, no support, and no way for him to do this without help or risk.
</div>

</div>
<div>There are no grab bars. No ramp. No proper setup. Even basic things—like safely getting into bed or being positioned comfortably—are a struggle because we don’t yet have the supplies or equipment he needs.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>These aren’t small inconveniences. These are daily barriers to basic human needs—bathing, moving, and living with dignity.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Watching him go through this is heartbreaking.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>At the same time, we have just fought our way out of extremely difficult and unsafe living situations—separately—and finally managed to move into a place together where he is safe.
</div>
<div>But getting here took everything we had. Every last dollar.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>We have no basic household items. No proper furniture. We are starting over from nothing.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>We are asking for help specifically for a power wheelchair because it is essential—and these chairs can cost tens of thousands of dollars, completely out of reach for us right now.
</div>

<div>But the reality is, the needs don’t stop there.
</div>
<div>He also needs a shower chair, a ramp, grab bars, and basic equipment just to function safely day-to-day.
</div>

<div>It is incredibly hard for me to ask for help again. I didn’t want to do this. But I am his mother, and I will do anything to make sure he has the dignity, mobility, and quality of life he deserves.

<div>My name is Susannah Blinkoff, I live in Los Angeles Calif, and I am the organizer of this page for Leslie Stevens Labyorteaux - a close friend for the past 24 years. Yesterday, Leslie, her husband Matthew, and their kids Sue and Truman Suhy suffered a devastating loss due to the tragic fire in Altadena Calif.  Everything they own is now gone - destroyed by the fire.  Besides that, the Pasadena Waldorf School where Leslie has worked for the past 10 years (and that Sue and Truman attended) has also been destroyed. <div>The three friends lost their home on January 8, 2025, in the Eaton Canyon Wildfire. The situation went from a power outage to an urgent evacuation in a matter of minutes, leaving them little time to collect their things. The fire demolished the entire block, engulfing many homes in flames. A place of laughter and fond memories was replaced by ash and sadness. <div>Early this morning, our dear Greg Harris, unexpectedly departed this life. While driving home to surprise his family for Christmas, he was involved in an automobile accident and was air lifted to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.<br />My sister-in-law Olga has lost her partner of nearly 20 years, their two young children are left without a father, and his mother has lost her only child.

<div>Christmas for his family will never be the same … nothing in our family will ever be the same. Greg viewed the world with rose colored glasses and could find the positive in just about any situation and that infectious outlook on life is what I will miss the most about him.
