<div>Our beloved Jose has just received the most difficult news of his life. He has been diagnosed with prostate cancer, and doctors are calling it possibly terminal if left untreated. <strong>Jose urgently needs a $9,000 PET scan, has had over $1,200 in bloodwork, and surgery that will cost over $36,000. Doctor's visits and testing have already cost $1,600.</strong>

<div>My cousin Jose, age 62, and his wife Lee have already spent all their life savings to cover the cost of his diagnosis. They are now facing medical expenses far beyond what they can manage alone, and Jose will need to take significant time off work to recover. Though Jose works in construction and plans to work as long as he can, his company does not offer medical benefits, so <strong>all medical expenses will be out of pocket</strong>. His wife, Lee, has been retired since age 64 due to her own health conditions, but she plans to find work to help support Jose during this time. But, she is having difficulty finding work at her age.

<div>At just three years old, Jose came to the United States from Cuba with his parents and sister, marking the beginning of a new life in the United States. He raised his children on his own and is now the proud grandfather of seven beautiful grandchildren. He has worked hard all his life and always given back to his family and community. After the heartbreaking loss of his grandson Neo to SIDS, Jose struggled with alcoholism. But eight years ago, he turned his life around— he got sober, met the love of his life, Lee, in rehab, and together they have built a life filled with joy, family, fun, and second chances. He lights up a room, and I am grateful to call him family.

<div>Four years ago, I married Jess, the love of my life. A year ago we were blessed with our wonderful son, Aein. Life was full of joy, and the future couldn’t have looked brighter.

<div>A day after my son's first birthday, I was diagnosed with a brain tumour. My MRI showed a Grade IV primary glioblastoma—a highly aggressive and rare cancer, especially for someone my age. I’m only 42.
</div>

</div>
<div>I underwent urgent brain surgery at the John Radcliffe, where a brilliant team managed to remove 95% of the tumour. I’m half way through six weeks of combined chemotherapy and radiotherapy, the current standard treatment.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Glioblastomas are notoriously resistant. They infiltrate healthy brain tissue, making it impossible to remove them entirely, and even after surgery and chemo-radiation, left unchecked the cancer always returns.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>But there are many patients living with stable tumours leading normal lives.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div><strong>Why I’m fundraising.</strong>

<div>Glioblastoma is so rare that it receives little state funding and almost no private investment.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>In fact, despite the amazing care I’m getting from my NHS team, the standard NHS treatment hasn’t changed for 20 years. Fortunately, international centres are now offering promising approaches and new clinical trials are starting all the time, leading to many long-term survivors living relatively normal lives.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>I’m young, I’m fit, I have everything to live for and the support of a loving network of family and friends - statistically all of these will help me reach long term survival. I want to be Aein’s dad and Jess’s husband for as long as I possibly can. And who knows, thanks to breakthroughs in fields like AI and personalised medicine, there may yet be more options on the horizon that can contain these tumours indefinitely.

<div><strong>Promising Options We’re Exploring</strong>

<div>I’ve already had incredible support from friends and family. People have spent many hours researching potential treatments and contacting experts who might be able to help.

<div>The research consistently points to<strong> individualised treatment</strong> giving me the best chance of longer survival, with detailed tumour analysis and collaboration with the best clinicians, wherever in the world that may be.

<div><strong>Some of the most promising include:</strong>

<li><strong>Tumour Treating Fields (TTF)</strong>: Clinically proven to extend survival, but means wearing a cap hooked up to batteries for 18 hours a day. TTF uses alternating electric fields to disrupt cancer cell division and is standard treatment in the US and Germany (but not in the NHS).
</li>
<li><strong>Dendritic Cell Vaccine Therapy</strong>: New but promising personalised immunotherapy that trains the immune system to recognise and attack glioblastomas, Germany is the European leader and commonly offers the treatment as part of a personal plan.
</li>
<li>M<strong>olecular Profiling + Individualised Therapies</strong>: These enable tailored treatments based on my tumour’s unique DNA, again used in Germany to build an individualised treatment plan offering better-targeted, potentially more effective options.
</li>
<li><strong>Immunogenic Cell Death Induction (ICD)</strong>: A promising treatment that enhances the effectiveness of other therapies by priming the immune system.
</li>
<li><strong>Oncothermia (Modulated electro-hyperthermia)</strong>: An established complementary therapy used alongside conventional treatments to potentially enhance drug uptake and stimulate anti-tumour immune responses.
</li>
</ul>

<div>I'm still waiting for formal recommendations and quotes from UK and German specialists, but here’s what I know so far. I’ll update this page regularly with any developments and will be fully transparent about how funds are used.

<div>In the past 3 years, I fell down steps backward and had a craniotomy (skull surgery, to drain brain bleeding. I fell down the same steps face first, breaking my nose for the 13th time, my left wrist, and my right hand. I had surgery for that. 
</div>

</div>
<div>I had a 3/4 inch kidney stone removed through my back.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div> I had my right hip replacement dislocate 31 times in 16 months needing me to have it replaced and removed  6 times. The last removal left me with no hip joint for 11 1/2 months. I could not walk. I had 2 PICC lines due to a low-grade staph infection in my blood, giving myself antibiotics for a total of 16 weeks 3 times a day.

<div>One of my roommates broke my nose a 14th time when he attempted to kill me. I needed my nose surgically repaired this past 12/4.
</div>

<div> My car was repossessed. I was unable to work and was dismissed after a year of extended sick time.  I had worked at least 1 job since 1975 so this was terrible.  I suffered a very serious depression and started drinking, hoping it would kill me.  
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>I went for inpatient treatment of my alcohol problem and my severe depression and am approaching 8 months sober and am following a rigorous, intensive outpatient program. My very close friend of 25 years, Jan, died 4/14/2020 of covid. My pet dog, Pugsley, my 16-year constant companion, had to be put down during one of my many hospital admissions. I had to say goodbye to him over the phone. I had Covid myself this January 28th.  My pain management doctors said that I would greatly benefit from pool and swim therapy.  My orthopedic doctors said the same. I have a pool that has fallen into disrepair, needing a new liner, which I cannot afford after the multitude of medical bills killed my budget.  I could use my pool at home if I got a new liner.  I would be able to use it about 5 months a year in my climate.  My credit is shot due to my medical bills, totaling hundreds of thousands of dollars.  I have no savings or cushion left.  I have no living relatives as I had to bury my last nine relatives. So, there is no family to help me. My borough is suing me because my pool is an eyesore that I cannot fix.  Please help me fix this pool by getting a liner by the end of the summer. (but hopefully by 5/31). If 6000 people read this and everyone gives me 1 dollar, I can rehab my walking and body at my home. I would be forever grateful, pay it forward, try to repay the help I get, and my city will no longer seek to sue me for a disrepaired eyesore.
