Desde aquí comparten y mantienen vivo un conocimiento ancestral durante más de cuatro generaciones: <strong>la cerámica, el arte y la pintura con técnicas propias de la cultura kichwa y materiales que recolectan en la selva. </strong>Manga Apa nace también como un camino para <strong>fortalecer la autonomía </strong>de las mujeres de la comunidad y sus familias.

<div>We are creating La ruta del Barro, a micro-documentary that tells the journey of women toward red pigment and clay, showing the origin, the process, and the deep meaning held by the sacred places where the materials they use are found.

<div>From the Amazon rainforest of Ecuador, Kichwa women have passed down ancestral knowledge for generations: ceramics.

<div>In March 2024, Manga Apa was created, a space founded by Kichwa women from the Sarayaku people. From here, they share and keep alive ancestral knowledge passed down for more than four generations: ceramics, art, and painting using techniques specific to Kichwa culture and materials collected from the forest. Manga Apa also emerges as a path to strengthen the autonomy of the women in the community and their families.

<div>Da circa un anno ho iniziato a divulgare la mia esperienza e le sfide del contesto in cui vivo sui social e questa é la mia prima raccolta fondi, vi lascio un pó di contesto per comprendere meglio il fine di questa raccolta fondi!
</div>
<div>Contesto storico: Il contatto del popolo Waorani è sicuramente uno dei più dolorosi e violenti della storia dell’Ecuador.
</div>
<div>I Waorani, infatti, sono stati contattati in maniera forzata, ignorando la loro volontà, e tutto per interessi economici.
</div>
<div>A realizzare il primo contatto con i Waorani sono stati dei missionari evangelici che, in nome dell’evangelizzazione di questa popolazione, hanno iniziato a sorvolare la foresta nell’area in cui vivevano e, poco a poco, a creare un contatto.
</div>
<div>I Waorani inizialmente non reagirono bene, infatti attaccarono e lasciarono senza vita tutti i primi missionari evangelici che si erano avvicinati.

<div>Con il primo contatto, avvenuto circa nel 1950, gli effetti sulla popolazione Waorani furono disastrosi.

<div>Quando ci siamo conosciuti mi ha espressamente detto che avrebbe avuto bisogno di una nuova sedia perchè la sua ormai era in pessime condizione e che lui lo aveva già fatto presente ma nessuno lo stava aiutando.

<div>Mi ha mostrato la sua stanza, e mi ha fatto notare che sarebbe piú comodo per lui avere un materasso su cui dormire.
</div>
<div>Mi piacerebbe che, tutti insieme, potessimo aiutare Nenekawe a muoversi meglio nella foresta.
</div>
<div>Che potessimo offrirgli un materasso più comodo dove dormire, e magari aggiungere anche delle coperte nuove, un cuscino e qualche altra piccola cosa come regalo.
</div>
<div>La sua sedia a rotelle è vecchia ed è tutta rotta.

<div>For those who don’t know me, my name is Sara. I’ve been living in Ecuador for a few years now, more specifically in the Amazon rainforest, in an Indigenous Waorani community.

<div>About a year ago, I started sharing my experience and the challenges of the context I live in on social media. This is my very first fundraiser, and I want to give you a bit of context so you can better understand the purpose of this campaign.

<div>Historical context:
</div>
<div>The contact between the Waorani people and the outside world is undoubtedly one of the most painful and violent in Ecuador’s history.
</div>
<div>The Waorani were contacted by force, against their will, all in the name of economic interests.
</div>
<div>The first contact with the Waorani was made by evangelical missionaries who, in the name of evangelizing this population, began flying over the forest where they lived and gradually tried to establish contact.
</div>
<div>The Waorani did not react well at first — they attacked and killed all the first evangelical missionaries who approached them.
</div>
<div>Despite this, the evangelical mission continued.
</div>
<div>It was only later discovered that the Summer Institute of Linguistics (in Spanish: Instituto Lingüístico de Verano) had agreements with an oil company that was interested in exploring that very territory, which until then had remained untouched precisely because of the Indigenous peoples living there.

<div>He showed me his room and pointed out how much more comfortable it would be to have a mattress to sleep on.

<div>I would love it if, together, we could help Nenekawe move more easily through the forest.
</div>
<div>If we could offer him a more comfortable mattress to sleep on — maybe even some new blankets, a pillow, and a few other small things as a gift.

<div>His current wheelchair is old and completely broken.

<div>Unfortunately, here in Ecuador, there is no efficient support system for communities in general — let alone for elders.

<div>For the women of the Waorani Amazonian community, this represents a rare and powerful opportunity. This is the first time that Waorani women will have their own space to present themselves directly—without intermediaries, without filters, and without externally imposed narratives.

<div>This is not only about exhibiting their work. It is about sharing, in their own voices, stories of resistance, struggle, and the defense of their territory. It is about creating a space where they can speak directly to others, explain what it means to be Waorani women today, and build connections based on mutual listening and respect.

<div>Throughout the event, they will not only present their craftsmanship but also share their knowledge. They will demonstrate their weaving techniques, offering a unique opportunity for the public to learn directly from them, to understand the processes, meanings, and cultural knowledge embedded in each piece.

<div>While the event provides the space and visibility, all travel and accommodation expenses must be covered independently. This includes intercontinental flights, accommodation in Italy, visa procedures, health insurance, and all necessary administrative processes.

<div>Traveling with the group will be Mingö Guiquita, a historic Waorani leader and daughter of the first Waorani woman to come into contact with the outside world, and Nemo Guiquita, a young leader committed to women’s empowerment and the defense of Indigenous women’s rights, particularly against gender-based violence in their communities.

<div>Their presence in Italy is much more than participation in an event—it is a political and cultural act. It is a moment of global visibility, a space for self-representation, and an opportunity to create pathways for economic autonomy through their art.

Questa volta, invece, saranno loro a esporsi direttamente, senza filtri, senza traduzioni culturali imposte dall’esterno.

<div>Del 20 al 27 de abril de 2026 estaremos en Milán, durante el Fuorisalone, para exponer el arte y la artesanía Waorani en un espacio que no solo contempla la exhibición, sino también momentos de diálogo y encuentro con el público.

<div>Para las mujeres de la comunidad con la que vivo en la selva amazónica, esta es una oportunidad rara y valiosa. No se trata solo de mostrar y exponer sus obras, sino de poder contar en primera persona su historia de resistencia, de lucha y de defensa del territorio. De mirar a los ojos a quienes escuchan y explicar qué significa ser mujer Waorani hoy.

<div>Es la segunda vez que mujeres Waorani llegan a Italia. En el pasado, una artesana expuso en la Biennale di Venezia, pero en ese caso fue invitada a través de una diseñadora que actuaba como intermediaria. Esta vez, en cambio, serán ellas quienes se presenten directamente, sin filtros, sin traducciones culturales impuestas desde afuera.

<div>El evento nos ofrece el espacio y la visibilidad, pero todos los gastos de viaje y estadía corren por nuestra cuenta.

<div>Esto significa cubrir los vuelos intercontinentales, que son muy costosos, la estadía en Italia, los trámites de visa, el seguro médico y toda la burocracia necesaria para que puedan viajar.

<div>Yo me encargaré de la organización y seré el puente entre la comunidad y Italia, pero sola no puedo asumir todos estos gastos.

<div>Conmigo viajarán Mingö Guiquita líder histórica Waorani, hija de la primera mujer Waorani contactada. Su vida atraviesa el paso del primer contacto con el mundo exterior hasta las luchas contemporáneas por la defensa del territorio. Junto a ella estará Nemo Guiquita, su hija, joven líder Waorani comprometida con el empoderamiento femenino y la defensa de los derechos de las mujeres indígenas, especialmente contra la violencia de género en las comunidades.

<div>Su presencia en Italia es mucho más que la participación en un evento: es un acto político y cultural. Es la posibilidad de abrir una ventana internacional que permita a las mujeres generar un ingreso autónomo a través de su arte. Es un espacio de palabra, donde su testimonio no sea contado por otros, sino por ellas mismas.
