<div>I have watched squishy three-month-olds become sassy college students. I have been there for first words, first steps, first friendships, the spectacular falls, and the getting back up. For years before I ever set foot in a graduate classroom, I was already deep in the work: nannying, leading outdoor adventures through the parks and green spaces of New York City, learning the particular magic of what happens when you give a child a patch of dirt and enough time to really be in it. That work lit something in me that I needed to understand more fully, so I went back to school. My Master's in Early Childhood Education gave language and research to what I had already been living. It confirmed what the mud had always told me: that children grow best outside, in wonder, in real relationship with the world around them.

<div>So I built a school around that truth. The Nature School Cooperative is a Worker-Owned nature-based preschool I founded and continue to grow, rooted in equitable access, grounded in research, and run by the educators who teach in it. It is the professional expression of everything I have believed since I first watched a two-year-old discover a worm and treat it like the most astonishing thing on earth. It is, in its way, a love letter to children and to the outdoors, and to the idea that neither should be a luxury.

<div>And also, since before I began taking care of other people's children, I have wanted my own child. That want has been patient, and it has waited through graduate school, through building a business, through years of working in a profession I love, that does not pay what it should. I earn $65,000 a year, and I have always lived close to the edge of what that covers. The financial stability I kept waiting for before starting a family never quite arrived, not because I wasn't working toward it, but because care work in this country is chronically undervalued, and I kept choosing it anyway.

<div>I am now in the East Bay of San Francisco, finding new communities of queer parents, and beginning a fertility journey that perimenopause is making urgent. As a solo, queer, non-binary person, I am navigating this without a partner's income and with little to no insurance coverage. Fertility treatment typically costs $30,000 to $100k or more, covering consultations, medications, IUI or IVF procedures, sperm donor costs, and labs. My savings are already gone, spent on the first steps of this process.

<div>This is not separate from the work I have always done. Every child I have watched grow, every outdoor classroom I have built, every family I have shown up for, it has all been pointing here. <div>My name is Clare Green and I'm an educator in Oakland, CA. For two weeks out of the year during my school’s post session program, I get to lead a group of high school students (girls and gender-expansive youth) on a five-day bike packing trip from Oakland to Santa Cruz.

<div>We spend the first week of our class learning to bike safely on the streets of Oakland.  Some of us are literally learning to bike for the first time!  We also learn about how Oaklanders have interacted with the land throughout history, how we need to work together as a team, and how women and queer people can create safety for one another and ourselves in the world and on the road.  During our second week, we hit the road and bike almost 100 miles to Capitola on the southern edge of Santa Cruz, camping for four nights along the California coast.

<div>Our trip is almost entirely funded through two nonprofit organizations.  These organizations pay for the adults who support us, the bikes that we use, the camping gear we rent, the camp sites, groceries, and the rental fees for our support vehicles.

<div>They DO NOT pay for any prepared food, admission to any attractions, or extra safety gear for our bikers.  Any teachers know that petty cash is an absolute necessity in situations such as these.  When we are climbing the massive cliffs along Highway 1, we're going to need to stop to get chocolate covered strawberries to keep these teenagers moving.  And honestly, no one wants to cook over the camp stove after the last and longest (39 miles!) day of riding.  So Pizza My Heart happens.  And, as a special treat, on the last day of the week, we hope to be able to surprise our bikers with a day at the Boardwalk in Santa Cruz. We also like to have a few extra pairs of padded bike shorts and gloves for our bikers on hand.

We wholeheartedly believe in the work being done in Gainesville by the Pride Community Center of North Central Florida (PCCNCF), and we are honored to help launch this campaign at such an important moment for our community.

<div><strong>The PCCNCF is launching a historic fundraising campaign with a goal to raise $80,000 to secure and sustain a new home.</strong> In April 2026, the PCCNCF was urgently forced to vacate their physical space in Gainesville. They quickly regrouped, working with Gainesville realtor Teresa Callen, and found a potential new home in a centralized location. <strong>The PCCNF seeks to purchase a commercial property with the space to continue providing free events, group meetings, crisis support, and more. </strong>

While the outcome was not what we hoped for, and its full impact is still being debated, we heard one message loud and clear: survivors were heard. We're honored that, in her dissent, Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson <a href="https://transequality.org/news/a4te-and-lgbtqi-survivors-condemn-supreme-court-decision-undermining-protections-youth" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">cited our amicus brief</a> .

<div><a href="https://www.bgsqd.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Bureau of General Services—Queer Division</a> , the only queer bookstore in Manhattan, is at risk of closing when the current owners move out of state at the end of April 2026. At a time when queer literature is under extreme censorship and trans people are being targeted by legislation that threatens their human rights, this space of queer community and culture must be preserved. We need it!

<div>That’s where we come in. Hive Mind Books, <a href="https://gaycitynews.com/hive-mind-books-store-brooklyn-community/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Brooklyn's queer independent bookstore and coffee shop</a>, is making a bid to purchase the Bureau and continue stewarding the wonderful community and active events program the current owners have built over the last thirteen years. As part of the acquisition, Hive Mind Books would also reopen the cafe space on the first floor of the LGBT Center, which is the building that houses the Bureau.

<div><strong>From the outset, the Bureau has served as a critical component of New York City’s queer cultural infrastructure.</strong> As an all-volunteer, independent queer bookstore and cultural center, the Bureau has hosted thousands of events, exhibitions, and workshops featuring countless queer authors, poets, scholars, artists, activists, performers, and other members of the global queer community, including Sarah Schulman, Kate Bornstein, Rumi Missabu, Edmund White, Jacqueline Woodson, Michelle Tea, John Keene, Emanuel Xavier, Christopher Bram, Pamela Sneed, Eileen Myles, Torrey Peters, Judy Grahn, and so many others.

<div>The spirit of community, activism, and queer joy that founders Donnie and Greg have fostered at the Bureau is the same spirit that enlivens Hive Mind Books. We are honored to carry this meaningful work forward. With costs rising in virtually every area for small businesses, we are focusing on ways to grow and financially sustain the Bureau. Our plans for the future of the Bureau include:

<li><strong>Develop the Bureau’s existing events program to bring in even more authors and community events.</strong> In Bushwick, we are proud to offer our space for free to trans and queer people for creative programming and community meetings. We are bursting at the seams with events to host and often run out of space on our calendar. We are excited to open up Manhattan event space to our existing community, while bringing more arts and culture events to the Bureau’s community. Hive Mind Books founder Jules Wernersbach has 20 years of bookstore event experience, including managing the event programs of one of the country’s largest bookstores, and several years’ experience running large scale literary festivals. We’re excited to hire a full time events manager to curate trans and queer programming across both bookstores.

It will be open to serve guests who attend events at the Bureau. Hive Mind Books is known for our friendly and fun coffee service. We are excited to bring the same personal, welcoming spirit to the Cafe at the Center.
