We gathered what we could, took our little girls, and moved to Khan Yunis, hoping to find a more secure place there.

Pay Costs for Tucson Spanish Speaking Dem Volunteers

[The above photo is of the Kashgar night market, taken by the database curator in April 2018, and serves to convey the general atmosphere in Xinjiang at the height of the mass incarcerations, the once occupied stalls now empty.]<br /><br />Dear friends and supporters,<br /><br />The Xinjiang Victims Database, based at <a href="http://www.shahit.biz">shahit.biz</a>, is a platform designed to collect and store records of people detained in Xinjiang's <a href="https://www.newyorker.com/news/a-reporter-at-large/china-xinjiang-prison-state-uighur-detention-camps-prisoner-testimony" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">present reality</a>, which ranges from confiscated documents and movement restrictions to concentration camps, police detention centers, and prisons, as well as the separation of children from their detained parents. In addition to documenting these individual victims publicly and precisely - and thereby making them more "expensive" for the authorities to abuse - our database is also committed to developing a number of counter-surveillance and analytical tools, in the hopes of bringing as much transparency to the region as possible. This includes the documentation of facilities where known victims are/were held, the computation of detention rates for individual villages and neighborhoods, and the constant translation/accumulation of primary-source evidence, among other things.<br /><br />At the moment, our database employs around ten people, the majority on a part-time basis, to work both on adding new victims and on general research/development. Many have significant expertise in the topic, either by virtue of being from Xinjiang, having worked with survivors of the incarcerations, or having lived in the region for significant periods of time. Combined with this are a great number of volunteer hours, which allows us to operate at very low costs, putting in around five hundred to a thousand hours of effort each month in return for around $5000 of monthly costs. Bunin is an independent scholar who had spent ~5 years in Xinjiang, where he researched the Uyghur language. Help Resettling the Afghan Girls Robotics Team

<p><strong>UPDATE: WE ARE RAISING MORE MONEY TO ALLOW THE PLANES TO KEEP DOING MORE TURNS.</strong><br /><br />We are coming to you in desperation to conduct an <strong>emergency flight rescue</strong> of 300+ Afghan souls. I have been working alongside humanitarian aid groups, decorated military veterans, and activists on the ground in Kabul, fighting to save people who otherwise have no chance at survival in the Taliban-occupied Kabul.<br /><br />The individuals in question are high-value targets - Afghan men and women who have worked as human rights lawyers, champions of Women’s and LGBTQ rights, journalists, government liaisons, artists, and interpreters - all of whom are at <strong>imminent risk of being executed by the Taliban,</strong> along with their families. We will be taking full family units.<br /><br />If these people do not get rescued as soon as possible, neither they nor their family will make it through the month. The Taliban have a KILL LIST and are going door to door, searching for these people and reportedly <strong>killing them on sight if found</strong>. Every one of these individuals on the manifest have been vetted.<br /><br />Due to the rapidly deteriorating situation in Kabul, this rescue mission will only be possible if $550,000 is raised to fuel 2 airplanes to fly into Kabul from a foreign country.  <strong>If we raise twice the amount ($1,100,000), we’ll do another run. There are enough people in need to make many round-trips with our two airplanes. We will continue multiplying as goals are met. </strong><br /><br />With help from people on the ground in Kabul, and the newfound security of the airport due to increased US presence — we have arranged for a <strong>safe onboarding process</strong>. FLYAWAY: EMERGENCY AFGHAN RESCUE MISSION

<p class="p1" style="line-height:normal;"><span class="s1">Hello friends and family,</span>

<p class="p1" style="line-height:normal;"><span class="s1">As some of you know, my family (mom and two younger brothers) are currently living in Michoacán, Mexico. My family has been in Tangamandapio<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>dating back at least 100 years, but that has changed and my family can no longer stay there for their own safety. </span>

<p class="p1" style="line-height:normal;"><span class="s1">Unfortunately, my father has been missing since this past Father’s Day weekend.. According to my family and friends back home, he was on his way to a party he put together with Alcoholics Anonymous to celebrate his 24 years of sobriety but he never made it. Somewhere along the trip from his ranch and the location of the party, cartel members kidnapped him.</span>
</p>

<p class="p1" style="line-height:normal;"><span class="s1">This is what’s called “un levanton” in Mexico, meaning members of a cartel “pick you up” and disappear you. Usually what this means is that you’re done for... we still haven’t heard anything or found his body. There are theories as to why they got him, but there is no new information to back them. The Mexican national guard and rurales (my dad was part of a local mounted police force that protects towns from cartels) have been looking for him, but nothing has been found.</span>

</p>

<p class="p1" style="line-height:normal;"><span class="s1">Now, this is a scary situation to be in, especially for my mom and two younger brothers who by association with my father are at danger if these people wanted to cause more harm. The oldest of my younger brothers is at most danger given that he’s my biological brother and the whole town knows him and the fact that he’s my father’s only son currently living in town. For this reason, I feel it’s best if they leave town as soon as possible until things calm down.</span>

</p>

<p class="p1" style="line-height:normal;"><span class="s1">What I am asking for is financial help to relocate my family elsewhere in Mexico. Somewhere where it will be safe for them for a few months until we can find them a permanent living situation. It saddens me that my family must leave our village, full of memories and roots dating back generations. Our history torn by the wrath of the narco state that now controls Mexico. Ironically, my mom and brothers moved to Mexico about 4 years ago for hopes of a better, more peaceful life surrounded by family and friends, but with the rise of the cartels all throughout the country, it feels like nowhere is safe these days.</span>

</p>

<p class="p1" style="line-height:normal;"><span class="s1">It also saddens me to think of what my father must be going through if these people still have him captive. I find myself in shock just thinking of him being tortured to death, as that is a possibility given the people we’re dealing with here. </span>These people don’t care about family or the livelihoods of the people affected by the crimes they commit.

I don’t know how much is enough to ask for in this situation, since there are so many unanswered questions, but anything will help. They deserve peace until answers arise, and staying in Tangamandapio will only put them in harms way. </span>

Across the country there are cities and communities being faced with their own water crisis, some have water even more toxic then Flint. <br /><br />Newark, NJ <br />Pittsburg, PN <br />NYC<br /><br /><br /><br />This is why I want to bring clean water not to just my community but to other communities across the country that are facing their own water crisis. <br /><br /><img src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/40432464_1565245305962296_r.jpeg" alt="40432464_1565245305962296_r.jpeg" width="100%" media_type="3" /><br /><br /><br />For these campaigns, I’m partnering with a socially-responsible water filtration company to bring state of the art water filters to communities nationwide that are impacted by poor water quality. The water filtration approach has three main advantages over bottled water:<br /><br /><br />1. <strong>Cost of Impact</strong>: Every dollar donated to this campaign will provide over 160 bottles worth of safe drinking water. This has 15x the impact of donating to bottled water campaigns. <br /><br />2. <strong>Time</strong>: In Flint, I see that people are spending hours in line to receive donations bottled water. By giving people the ability to have safe water, on demand in their home, they won’t have to take time off from work or spend their weekends lined up to get bottled water. <br /><br />3. <strong>Environmental Impact</strong>: While bottled water can be a good solution for immediate fix to a crisis, it is not a sustainable fix when the world is drowning in plastic pollution. <br /><br /><strong>Flint Water Crisis Background</strong> <br />The Flint Water Crisis began in 2014 when the drinking water source for the city of Flint, Michigan was changed from pre-treated water from Detroit to the Flint River and treated in the Flint Water Treatment Plant. The treatment plant was not equipped with the proper equipment to treat the water (which would have cost around $100 a day), and the river water damaged the pipes allowing lead and bacteria to get into the water. For month’s local officials and the media claimed the water was fine and that the residents were overreacting, even as scientist began to uncover just how bad the water crisis was. Many homes had water comparable to toxic waste.<br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><strong>“Little Miss Flint” Background </strong><br />Through my previous water donation campaigns, I was able to donate over ONE MILLION bottles of water to families impacted by the Flint Lead Crisis. My community needed water they could trust and bottled water was the only resource for drinking water that many in my community trusted. For my new donation campaign, my team has partnered with a socially-responsible water filtration company, which will allow us to maximize the impact of donated funds and eliminate the single use plastic waste that is associated with bottled water.<br /><br /><img src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/40432464_156524176846158_r.jpeg" alt="40432464_156524176846158_r.jpeg" width="100%" media_type="3" /><br /><br /><strong>Socially-Responsible Corporate Partner Background </strong><br />Hydroviv was Founded by a Ph.D. Chemist as a charitable response to the Flint Lead Crisis in 2015. Hydroviv was called out by The Chicago Tribune and BBC as the first water filter “company” to develop and donate high-capacity lead removal filters to families &amp; child-centric organizations in Flint. Four years later, Hydroviv now designs &amp; builds custom water filters for people around the US, and makes these products available to the public at a fraction of the cost of comparable systems. Hydroviv recently appeared on ABC’s Shark Tank where Mark Cuban praised Hydroviv’s charitable roots as “doing well by doing good.” For this campaign, Hydroviv has agreed to provide their premium filters at their break-even cost.

Daniel Gregory that prefers to go by Dan was shot while trying to defend other protesters from getting shot by a gunman that drove into a crowd of protesters. Apparently as the car was driving into the crowd. Dan apparently ran towards the car and the gunman and got shot in the arm, when he defended the protesters and was taken to Harborview Medical center in stable condition. We been in contact with Dan since midnight last night and he says he doing ok and glad nobody else got hurt.  Please donate to cover his medical bills. Thousands have been arrested and at least 15 are confirmed dead, several alleged to have been killed by soldiers. <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/world/video/2019/oct/22/shots-fired-at-protesters-defying-curfew-in-chile-video">Many more have been wounded</a> at the hands of government forces by rubber bullets, tear gas, and live ammunition. <br />Rest in peace dearest Claire ❤<br />As most of you know, September 2, 2018 at 6:00pm, Claire Wineland passed away. She was not in any pain and the medical staff said it was the most peaceful passing they had ever witnessed. <br /><br />She was surrounded by love and with her mother Melissa Yeager and father John Wineland; they saw her into this world for her first breath and were with her for her last. <br /><br />She suffered a massive stroke on August 26th after a successful double lung transplant. The stroke was caused by a blood clot. After a week of intensive care and various life saving procedures, it became clear that it was Claire’s time to let her go according to her Advance Directive.<br /><br />In Claire fashion, she is an organ donor. Claire’s remarkable family were so happy for the other families that were now getting the calls that the organ they had long been waiting for was now available for transplant. They had been on the receiving end of that call just one short week ago. <br /><br />We know Claire was loved all over the world. Your prayers, support and encouraging words, have been a huge source of strength for her and her family. This last year, her decline due to having <a href="https://www.cff.org/?gclid=CjwKCAjwg_fZBRAoEiwAppvp-Rd5qQgHGrA9ocu6WPQkF54mDZV6QlhO_Ye4sZ5ohM5eGc8T1sLHIBoCQKkQAvD_BwE">Cystic Fibrosis</a>  (CF) has been drastic.  She is unable to do the work that she loves, which is traveling the world to share her message with thousands of people, she is using a wheelchair due to shortness of breath to walk more than 100ft and her quality of life has become just about staying alive. ￼ <br /><br /><img src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/13804593_1530581734726331_r.jpeg" alt="13804593_1530581734726331_r.jpeg" width="100%" media_type="3" /><br />This is not the Claire we all know and love. ￼  She has recently been placed on the UCSD Lung Transplant list and is anxiously awaiting the call for new lungs.  A new start, a new chapter #metamorphosis.  <br /><br />Again, we want to make sure that everyone knows this money will not be used for the transplant itself, we do have medical insurance. But the ancillary costs  and medication co pays before, during and after can be considerable, and as you know, she is already struggling to make ends meet and is unable to work. Claire Wineland Needs Our Help

<p>It was a heck of a weekend. First, on Friday, the Jewish Community Center received a bomb threat and went on lockdown. </p>
<p>Then, early <strong>Monday morning, around 3:30 a.m. a man broke in to the Islamic Center Tucson, and destroyed and damaged copies of the Qur'an.</strong> See the news story <a href="http://www.tucsonnewsnow.com/story/34837845/vandal-breaks-into-islamic-center-of-tucson-destroys-copies-of-quran" target="_blank">here.</a></p>

<p>I'm a Tucson Jew, and I've been welcomed at the Islamic Center Tucson, as well as the Muslim Community Center. A Jewish friend (Stephanie) said we needed to help. So here goes...</p>
<p>There are Jews, Christians, Buddhists, Hindus, Sikhs, Bahá'í , Atheists, Agnostics and others in Tucson who love our Muslim brothers and sisters, Though we may have different beliefs, we want them to be safe, and  never to have to pray in fear.</p>
<p>Let's come together and replace the damaged copies of the Holy Qur'an, and show our Muslim neighbors that they are indeed our brothers and sisters. </p>
<p>I don't have exact amounts on the replacement or repair costs, or security upgrade costs, but our goal includes an estimate for both.</p>
<p>UPDATE: We definitely have the funds to replace the damaged Qur'ans. Additional funds will go toward security upgrades.</p>

BUILDING A BELOVED COMMUNITY

Caring for someone 24/7 for 10 years completely without any outside help and never even half a day off all those years. Mom was bed ridden for 2 years o I had to spoon feed her, clean her, change the bedding. But I also had to hug her, Entertain her and get her to breath whenever the Alzheimer's mad her brain forget how to breath. So I had to sit in a chair nest to her bed 24 hours a day.<br /><br />After Mom passed I tried to get a job I have three degrees but now live in a more rural, agriculture town. The nearest city is 60 miles from here. My care broke down 3 years ago and I can't afford to fix it. I have not had the money to pay my property taxes for 4 years. After I pay the rent for the land this manufactured home is on. I have $150 left over for bills. There usually is nothing left for food each month. I try selling artwork online but that is sporadic.<br /><br />I need to hire someone to pull the carpeting out and lay the hardwood floors. I have the wood in the garage but with all my physical disabilities and age, I can't do it alone. If I could fix the house up I could rent a room and be able to then start paying taxes.<br /><br />I withdrew my retirement fund early to pay for Mom's medical needs but 9 years ago my account was hacked and every penny was stolen by a guy in Russia. I wasn't able to retrieve even a dime.  This only leaves me my Social Security Retirement.<br /><br />I live in fear of having my house taken from me because of the back taxes. I owe around $5,000. Stress can really increase the pain. It will cost me about $2,000 to have the car repaired (the part is $5,000 but if I can find a used one it will be a lot less.) I estimate $1,000 to have the rugs taken out and flooring put in. $100--200 to have the water heater repaired. It have been 8 month with no hot water. I need an electrician because I have no working lights in the kitchen I think that might be $100-200. I certainly wouldn't mind being able to stock the house with with food basic. This could run $300-400.

Rafe Sagarin - marine ecologist, conservationist, science communicator, father, husband, brother, and friend - was killed on May 28th by a drunk driver while on an evening bicycle ride near Biosphere 2 in southern Arizona. <br /><br />Rafe was 43 years old - full of boundless energy and optimism as well as gigantic and creative vision. He was loved for his enormous smile, generosity, and devotion to his family.<br /><br />Rafe will be missed dearly by all, but his family especially faces the unrelenting effect of his absence. He also strived, through his work with the UA <a href="http://www.environment.arizona.edu/" target="_blank">Institute of the Environment</a> and the <a href="http://carson.arizona.edu/" target="_blank">Carson Scholar</a> Program, to communicate science to broad audiences and effect positive change. [updated 1/8/15]<br />We took Gabriel to get tests and meet his neurosurgeon on 12/23/14, and the doctor has now given us fantastic news: Gabriel’s neurological episodes are due to a well-understood side-effect of his spinal cord damage, which is easily treatable with surgery!  The doctor gives the surgery a very high chance of success, and also has very low risks, which is so much better than we were expecting!  Gabriel is scheduled for surgery on 1/28/15, and for extensive pre-op tests on 1/20/15, and unfortunately he will probably also need more cardiology tests on 1/21/15.<br /><br />The staff of City of Hope Hospital has already made truly incredible special arrangements to accommodate Gabriel’s unique circumstances, and they are continuing to bend over backwards to make everything as easy on him as possible.  We are eternally grateful to them, and cannot recommend them highly enough!<br /><br />The only problem we have now is that we are very short of funds.  We need about $650 for the remaining 3 ambulance rides needed to get Gabriel to pre-op tests and surgery, but we also need $52 per day ($1,586/month) for the extra nursing care he will need after being discharged following the surgery, ideally for 6-9 months, but for 2-3 months at least.  He needs lots of extra care because his ordeal of having these neurological episodes for years has left him weighing only a skeleton-like 110 lbs, instead of a healthy 155, and the nursing care covered by his insurance is very inadequate until he gets a lot stronger.<br /><br />Your help is urgently needed, please donate whatever you can, and Like and Share this with your friends and family!  Thank you so very much for helping Gabriel get out of the suffering he’s been in for years!<br /><br />Here is an interview with a staff member from one of the facilities Gabriel lived in, talking about him, and the effect he had on other patients and staff where he lived: <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-wnkyyDKYk" target="_blank" class="" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-wnkyyDKYk</a><br /><br />* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *<br /><br />My younger brother Gabriel was shot in the neck while playing in our front yard when he was 14 years old, an innocent victim of a violent crime, and became a quadriplegic.  Within just a few weeks, he had faced being paralyzed for life, and soon was back to his usual joking self.  <span style="text-decoration:underline;">For nearly 15 years, he’s been confined to hospitals and medical facilities almost constantly,</span> because of a rare and severe neurological condition that started developing a few years later as a result of his injury.  For all these years of hospitalization, Gabriel has had a really positive attitude, and was always talking with everyone.  <span style="text-decoration:underline;">But for two years now he can’t move, or even talk, while sitting up in his wheelchair,</span> without triggering episodes of pain, heart problems, and dangerous blood pressure swings, that can go on for hours.  So he spends all day in silence, just trying to hold still.<br /><br /><span style="text-decoration:underline;">Although rare, Gabriel's condition is treatable,</span> and over the last 6 years, <span style="text-decoration:underline;">3 different doctors wanted to operate on him, but there were authorization problems -- which have finally been solved</span> now that he is in a different medical facility!  We have also found a very well-recommended neurosurgeon at City of Hope Hospital who wants to operate on Gabriel, which would be the most incredible Christmas gift of all!<br /><br />Because of his unusual and severe condition, Gabriel can’t travel except by ambulance, which is not covered by his insurance for going to see the surgeon or getting scans, nor will it cover some of the medical equipment he needs.  All money donated will be put into a Special Needs Trust, and used for medical bills, ambulance transport, assistive devices, and nursing; ¾ of the funds are for extra nursing care, for his long rehabilitation after he leaves the hospital, because the covered nursing services are seriously inadequate for quadriplegics.  <span style="text-decoration:underline;">We need about a third of the funds by the time of his surgery,</span> which is expected to be soon after Christmas, but might be before (fingers crossed).<br /><br /> Please donate whatever you can, and Share this with your friends and family.  Thank you so very much for your help, and God bless you!<br /><br />Gabriel is a really kind person, and has many friends both in and out of the hospitals, and has been an inspiration to many people.  Some of the medical staff who worked with him in the past are still his good friends, and talk to him several times a week, even years after he left their facility.  During his years of hospitalization, until the last two, Gabriel has been very energetic, constantly trying to improve himself and his situation.  He spent countless hours over many years, trying to get the surgery he needed, seeing many different doctors, but was blocked by the authorization problems.  He also got access to a t-shirt printing machine, and tried to start his own business, but couldn’t get enough reliable help outside the hospital.  He wants so much to go to college, and make something of his life; before his neurological problems started, his family lived outside the range of any handicapped transport service, so he was never able to attend college.<br /><br />Gabriel has said of his situation:<br /><br /><em>"Life is an extremely peculiar phenomenon that God puts forth in front of us.  Thank the Lord for my faith, and the strength that I have, it has been twenty three years of being a quadriplegic.  A normal quadriplegic would be living his life in the community, productive with his abilities, but for some strange and unfortunate reason, I had to have one of the most rare and unique spinal cord injury conditions that exists in this medical field.   I need to regain my life. My friends and family are waiting for me.  I want to accomplish my dreams, and be a useful member of society."</em><br /><br />***************<br /><br />More details about the medical situation are below.  (An old friend of Gabriel's set up this page, and wrote most of the text for us.)<br /><br />His neurological condition is an extreme, hyper-sensitive form of autonomic dysreflexia, and even minor movements cause dangerously high and alternating low blood pressure, heart atrial fibrillation, intense electric-shock-like sensations, and other symptoms.  The gunshot left him a "partial quadriplegic," with completely paralyzed hands but some limited arm movement.  Nowadays, even just moving his hands a few inches, or talking above a slight whisper when he’s sitting up, can trigger hours of episodes, so he can’t even feed himself or type.  Years ago, he was pushing himself around in a manual wheelchair, and high-fiving his friends! Now he can’t even go over the slightest bump in his electric wheelchair, and can barely move his right hand enough to control it, without triggering episodes.<br /><br />Unfortunately, just staying in bed all the time quickly causes many serious medical problems for quadriplegics, and Gabriel is very healthy except for his neurological episodes, and he wants to stay that way, so he gets up almost every day, even though it’s very difficult.  If he could just hold completely still all day it might be tolerable, but he has to move around every half hour, to prevent him from getting life-threatening pressure sores (which is what killed Christopher Reeve).
