<div>A small group of Venice locals are organizing on behalf of Nathan "The Piano Man" of Venice.

<div><strong>Nathan Pino</strong> is one of those Venice souls you recognize instantly with his music, his kindness, and his presence. At 73 years young, he has been playing his piano on the Venice Boardwalk for 23 years. Many of us grew up watching him play. Whether we know him personally or from small moments at a local coffee shop or hearing him play on our way to the beach, he feels like family for a lot of us.

<div>Recently, Nathan’s piano and his setup were damaged and confiscated during a city cleanup and he was issued a citation. He also had his van towed earlier this year. This shook all of us who love him, and the video of the event made its way through our community with a lot of heartbreak and confusion.

<div>Nathan is unhoused and he considers Venice his home. We want to help him, and we are being mindful of his comfort and privacy so as not to overwhelm him or create unwanted attention. We want to restore what he lost, protect him from further citations, and support him with dignity and care.

He's battling advanced skin cancer under his right eye, and because of his age and the tumor's location, treatment is no longer an option. Help Small Business Owners Recover From Disaster

<div>On Tuesday, May 20, our beloved friend and fellow <strong>Pasadena Fire Department Firefighter Paramedic, Armen Hagopian</strong>, a dedicated hero from Station 36, was involved in a serious off-duty motorcycle accident. Armen sustained a severe spinal cord injury and is currently recovering in the ICU. His injuries have paralyzed him from the waist down with limited sensation, and there is no indication that his condition will improve.

Most recently, he spent days battling the flames of the Eaton fire, risking his life to save the lives and homes of many in our community. <div>This past July 4th, our family gathered at my mother, Penny “Nanda” Deupree’s, home in Hunt, Texas, just steps away from the Guadalupe River. What began as a joyful holiday turned into a night of terror when a catastrophic flash flood swept through her home. My mom, my daughters, and I—along with six others, including two small grandchildren—survived only by climbing onto the roof. By the grace of God, all nine of us made it out alive, though so many others tragically did not.

<div>At 83, my mom is spunky, resilient, and deeply loved in this community. But the flood took everything from her—her car, her irreplaceable scrapbooks and heirlooms, and the five-bedroom home she built with my late father, Tom “Pops” Deupree, more than 20 years ago. That home was her nest, the place where she gathered family and friends regularly, and her only financial asset.

<div>What Mom Wants Now
</div>
<div>After surviving that night, Mom knows she cannot face rebuilding on the river. At her age, the time, trauma, and burden are simply too great. What she does know is that she wants to remain in Hunt—her beloved community where her church, garden club, and weekly gatherings with friends bring her joy and belonging. It’s also where my husband Patrick and I live, and where she finds daily love and support.

<div>We are so thankful to have found a home in Canyon Springs that will allow her to age in place, surrounded by her family, friends, and community. This home will give her back what she lost: a safe and welcoming place to live fully, host gatherings, and remain rooted in Hunt.

<div>On July 4, 2025, a catastrophic flash flood devastated Texas, along the Guadalupe River corridor, leaving heartbreak and destruction in its wake. Among those hard hit is Woody Chambless, a proud veteran and dedicated member of the American Legion Riders Post 208, who has tirelessly served our nation and community. Woody, his wife, daughter, and grandchildren are now facing unimaginable loss after the flood caused catastrophic damage to the cabin on their property where their daughter and grandchildren lived, severely damaged their primary residence, and completely destroyed their truck, trike, and RV. This tight-knit family, who has always given back to veterans and neighbors, now needs our support to rebuild their lives. <div>Casita Blu has been welcoming guests since 2014, offering peaceful stays along the river and, at times, a place of refuge for community members needing temporary housing. In 2022, Paws on the River was added—a safe, happy space where dogs of all kinds could run, play, and be cared for.

<div>Now, both have been severely impacted by this flood.

<div>The floodwaters tore through fencing and kennels. Plumbing is gone. Tools and supplies we relied on every day are lost. What once felt like home—for people and pets alike—is now covered in mud and heartbreak.

<div>I have known the Bauer family my whole life. We have celebrated many occasions at their home growing up. Wolf and I grew up together. We have become really close the past few years, supporting each other in our mom’s Alzheimer’s/dementia journeys. He was a support when I lost my mom. I am so devastated for them and all those who have lost their homes in the Palisades and Eaton fires.

<div>This desperate financial assistance is being requested on behalf of my dear friend, Sam Saunders.

<div>Sam, in Black Mountain, NC, has lost everything in 4 mudslides that slammed down the mountain taking everything he owned last Saturday, Sept 28th.  Sam was buried in the wreckage for hours of what used to be his home before finally being rescued.  A helicopter was able to eventually deliver him to Mission Hospital in Ashville, NC Saturday night.

<div>Sam injuries include broken ribs, punctured both lungs, broken collarbone, broken shoulder, and broken back.

<div>Many of you may be watching the news and hearing about or seeing some of the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene. But can you literally imagine personally being buried in a mud slide?  Sam's home, all of his personal possessions, his shop tools, his livelihood - - gone!!!!

<div>But God must have a wonderful purpose for him still.  Because the grace of God surely had his hands all over this or Sam would not be here still. 
</div>
<div>Sam has always been a back to nature boy:  hiking, fishing, mountain climbing, etc.  He also loves dancing and music and the arts.  He loves using his skills to help those in need with their homes even if they can’t pay for it.   Sam loves his church; his friends; his cousins; his sister, Gay; his daughter, Emmaline; and son, Hatch!

<div>I'm truly hoping the kindness and generosity of loved ones and strangers might please help here to contribute towards financial assistance to help Sam to start a new life after he gets out of the hospital (and then rehab). But being able to start living somewhere again is the first priority.

<div>On Friday, September 27, Hurricane Helene unleashed a thousand-year flood event that destroyed over 24 homes in the community of Beacon Village in Swannanoa, NC. <strong>EVERYTHING was lost in the flooding of our homes</strong>, several of which have been in families for generations. Additional homes in the community had various stages of flood damage.

<div><strong>Residents do not have flood insurance</strong>, as the area is not in a flood plain. People living in these 100 year-old mill houses work hard for a living and will lose their homes without help. As of 10/10/2024, over half the flooded homes have been cleared and gutted, solely through the efforts of volunteers and neighbors, without assistance from the government.
</div>

<div>We, the Beacon Villagers, have built a plan to distribute funds to households and homeowners for relief, recovery, and restoration. Our houses, our homes, may be seriously damaged, but our sense of community will survive.
</div>

<div><strong>All funds will go directly towards rebuilding these homes</strong> and restoring hope in the lives of the displaced residents when they need it most. Estimated reconstruction costs are up to $200,000 per home. The funds will be professionally managed by trusted community members for equitable distribution directly to flood victims on a regular schedule, which began in November. We are working with an attorney (pro bono) to apply for 501(c)3 non-profit status and will let donors know when donations will be eligible for tax deduction. <div>This is for Melinda Williams, my mother-in-law. <strong>Her house, cars, animals, and everything she owned were completely destroyed by Hurricane Helene.</strong> She is a paramedic from Avery County, Banner Elk. who went home in the middle of her shift to save her animals and the little bit of things she could. She realized it was too late when she and her animals were inside the house and water came rushing in. In that short amount of time, her house was destroyed with her and her animals in it. <div>West &amp; Charmane Griffin, Brother and sister, have been living in Altadena since their late Father's time as the Evangelical preacher of the community in the 60's. West is a disabled veteran, still recovering from heart surgery last year for congestive heart failure, and to me he is a hero throughout this whole ordeal. West often struggles with mobility due to his condition, risked his life to save multiple people, including an elderly paraplegic and a young man with 3 dogs stranded during the fire.

<div>Despite his limited mobility, West rushed to the aid of Mr. Eddy Anderson, a senior who is paralyzed from the waist down, ensuring he was safely carried out of harm’s way. Shortly before that, a young man(his neighbor William Lam, me), stranded without family due to their being abroad, pleaded for help to rescue his three dogs as the fire was approaching. West, fighting through pain and exhaustion, drove through the smoke-filled neighborhood, and helped save the animals before guiding his neighbors to safety.Throughout the night, West also went door to door, warning people and helping others to evacuate. Finally, at the last moment, he went back to his house and woke up his sister Charmane as the fire was finally in sight.They were only able to pack up bare essential items before leaving the house behind as the wind and fire had picked up speed. even in the face of overwhelming wind and smoke as the fire embers flew through the sky and landed all over us, West demonstrated the unyielding strength of human spirit! I know this because I was there witnessing all this.

She believed that since she had been blessed, it was her duty to bless others in return. During the holidays, she would create and sell Mother's Day, Valentine's Day, Easter baskets and flowers to supplement her income, ensuring that any leftovers were given to those in need or to local seniors to brighten their day.

The last place he said he would meet his father was at the home now burned down home, a place filled with memories, love, and the hope that one day he would return. But now that home is gone, destroyed in the fire, taking with it the last tangible connection to where they believed Jonas might come back. The heartbreak of losing both Jonas and his Childhood home that tied them to him is devastating. Despite the years of uncertainty, Wayne and his family have never stopped searching, never stopped hoping.

<div><strong>Louvenia Jenkins is a survivor of the 2025 Pacific Palisades fire</strong> that saw her home of seventy-odd years and all her possessions reduced to ash. Louvenia Jenkins is a 97-year-old neighbor of the Pacific Palisades. She is one of the first individuals of African descent to own property in the Palisades, and certainly the first Black woman to be a homeowner in the neighborhood.

<div>Louvenia Jenkins was and is loved by many, having been an educator in Southern California for years, and a mentor to friends and family for many more years. Just last year, students at Santa Monica Community College made a documentary about her life and, equally as important, how she uplifted the lives of those around her. Not so long ago, she invested much of her personal wealth to create the UNCF scholarship #byLAforLA. Her investment funded the Richard L. Sykes Memorial Scholarship, named after her cousin. Starting in the 2019-2020 academic year, the Sykes Memorial Scholarship supported 25 rising first-year African American students who were residents of the greater Los Angeles area, through up to five years of college.

Gone are their many memories they've made in their first home: the garden planted in memory of their stillborn baby Kaia, the nursery they brought Leio home to, the many, many hours of sweat equity they put in to turn their house into their home, and all their possessions and mementos they've collected along the way. Ever the gracious hosts, Lexi and Alan provided a place to gather, to celebrate, to mourn, to lay low for their many friends and family.
