<div>Julinna is a standout person, mom, friend, professor, philosopher, and community leader. And you can't imagine anyone doing any of it so dazzlingly well. She was diagnosed with metastatic (stage 4) breast cancer in October of 2021 and is about to receive radiation for a resulting brain tumor.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>She will be fatigued from this treatment, and one thing that would be helpful would be if we could provide some delivered meals to her and her daughters. This way they can avoid cooking prep and clean-up and focus what else needs doing. If we raise enough, we can fund Door Dash, Uber Eats, Grubhub, or Spoonful of Comfort, etc., as needed. Please help as you can and please share if you can’t. She is a major influence on those of us in philosophy and an inspiration to countless of us merely lucky enough to be in her various communities.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>When she was diagnosed with breast cancer it was “de novo”, meaning there had been no earlier diagnosis in annual mammograms. At the time of diagnosis, it was detected in her spine, ribs, skull, and lungs.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>When people have metastatic disease (the medical name for stage 4 cancer) the goal is to keep the cancer in check and at bay using cancer medications. It is considered “too late” for it to be cured - but it is treatable. You want to be left on one medication as long as possible, as that then leaves time for other ones to be used later. But Julinna’s cancer is aggressive, and she is already on her 5th medication in 3 years. (The first one she was prescribed was expected to last 3 years, but it only lasted 10 months.)
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>She’s been on a low-dose chemo since last January, and that seemed to be working until this tumor next to her brain was discovered (a large one, 3cm x 4cm).
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Losing her and all that she does for others is unthinkable and thank you for any help you can offer.
</div>

<div>This request is for Lorenzo Lopez, age 15, who recently suffered a traumatic spinal cord injury and is currently in post-surgery recovery with paralysis from the lumbar down.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div><strong>Updates on Lorenzo's progress may be found at </strong><a href="https://www.caringbridge.org/site/b6edd84f-538f-11ef-a363-e7f4f1bb0940?utm_source=share&amp;utm_medium=web&amp;utm_content=copylink_leftmenu_php" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><strong>this CaringBridge link</strong></a><strong>.</strong>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div><strong>Who is Lorenzo?</strong> Lorenzo has lived in Asheville since age 4. He is now a rising junior at Nesbitt Discovery Academy where he studies STEM and liberal arts. He plays basketball for the varsity team at Enka High School and the 16U club team at Thrills Skills Academy. He loves to watch and play sports of all kinds. He often walks his own clubs on the golf course and plays keeper for his Dad in soccer workouts.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>He also loves cars and has become a walking encyclopedia of specs for dozens if not hundreds of makes and models. If you took a car ride with him around town, he would point out interesting cars along the way and tell you all about them.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>His favorite YouTubers are Good Good Golf, Dude Perfect, and Whistling Diesel. With his family he attends Emmanuel Lutheran Church and School, where he volunteers and was 8th grade class valedictorian.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>He loves hip hop especially Rod Wave and has recently taken on a country habit thanks to his younger sister Ivana's influence -- although he's not yet on board with Taylor Swift! :)
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>He has always loved Ivana with hugs, teaching, and protection from all things including her epilepsy. He is a gentle spirit, and his strength runs deeply beneath the surface. Lorenzo prays daily and walks with the grace of God. He turns 16 on Saturday, Aug. 10.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div><strong>How is Lorenzo doing?</strong> He is in good spirits and is handling the pain and difficulty with grace. But it's SO hard for him, and he has a lot of questions about why this is happening to him and what life is going to be like from here. Thankfully he also has tons of hope. He is watching the Olympics and keeping up with sport and cars on his phone.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div><strong>What is Lorenzo facing?</strong> After surgery it's about recovering from the immediate trauma and getting fit enough for the long trip back from Wichita to North Carolina. He will enter an inpatient spine rehab center somewhere, and this will be his new home for at least several months. He will wear a TLSO back brace basically full time. Thankfully he suffered no other injuries except a broken finger, so he has all his athleticism and strength for the journey.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div><strong>Where is Lorenzo going?</strong> With the love and support of his family, church, teammates, coaches, and extended network of friends all over the country, Lorenzo believes that he is going to be a success story. He is going to beat this thing! He wants to do the hard work every day needed to get him back to school next year, back to walking and getting fit again, and eventually back to playing basketball with his beloved teammates and coaches. WE BELIEVE IN HIM!!! Hope is our biggest asset in completing this arduous journey.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div><strong>What are our needs?</strong> Financially this is a major ordeal of still unknown proportion. We are out of state and out of network. Hopefully our insurance company shows us grace. But inevitably we will have uncovered expenses that include emergency and long distance air transport, construction costs to fit our home to his needs, travel and lodging costs for his parents, and uncovered medical expenses in general. His family is so grateful for all of you taking the time to read his story and contribute in any way you can. As much as your financial contributions will help, so do your positive thoughts, energies, and prayers. Please continue sending this as well. Lorenzo is strong, but he will need this support for the long journey.
</div>
<div><br />

<div><strong>We thank our good friends Dr. Shawn Miller from Arlington, TX and Steve Dieterichs from Granbury, TX for setting this page up and adding this note:</strong>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Our dear friends, Dr. Ed Lopez &amp; Dr. Jamie Lopez, received the devastating news recently that their teenage son, Lorenzo, has suffered a serious spinal cord injury in a ATV accident that has currently left him unable to walk. Though we don't know how lasting this will be yet, we do know that Lorenzo is a strong and courageous young man that is loved by a large family and legions of friends who will be there to help him rehabilitate through this.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>There is undoubtedly going to be a long and arduous fight ahead that involves time in therapy, rehab, and travel for the family, in order to access the best facilities and specialists available for Lorenzo's recovery.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div><strong>The burden faced by the Lopez family will far exceed the initial goal, so we hope to meet and surpass it by Sept. 1, 2024. Airline miles may also be donated by contacting Bob Lawson via messaging this GoFundMe campaign.</strong>

<div>As many of you know, our colleague and friend Dr. Leigh M. Johnson has been fired midcareer from a tenured position as an Associate Professor of Philosophy at Christian Brothers University in Memphis. She was denied due process, and has filed a workplace discrimination/wrongful termination claim. As the only terminated faculty member who refused to sign the severance agreement* (with its non-disclosure provision), she has had to deal with unacceptable administrative decisions complicating her departure from campus.**
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Leigh is an extraordinary teacher and mentor of her students. Her university consistently rated her “Excellent” in her annual reviews, and her student evaluations reflected the judgment of her colleagues. Her classes were packed and popular, she was recognized as an innovative pedagogue, and she is widely known outside the university for her podcasting and other media. We want to help Leigh fund the legal bills that have already accumulated in her effort to fight the university's unwarranted and unacceptable termination, and that will accrue as she continues the fight.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>We have known Leigh for twenty years: she was one of Mitchell’s students at Penn State while she completed her Ph.D. We enjoyed long conversations in the hall, uproarious conversations on the town, and the great music she made with her band. Leigh is an outstanding teacher-scholar in philosophy whose presence in the profession is in our eyes indispensable, and she has always been deeply committed to justice. We want to see Leigh get back to doing what she does so well. Join us!

Stand with Leigh M. Johnson Against Firing Tenured Faculty

<div><strong>How his life been from start?</strong><br />
</div>Umair was first admitted to the hospital when he was 4 years old in 2001. back then we didn't know what is it what caused stones in his kidneys. just with little medication he was sent home. he had his first major surgery when he was 9 years old in 2007 a 27 mm stone was removed from left kidney back then but still nobody knew what caused it. <br /><br />In 2009 and 2010 he was constantly in and out of the hospital for the treatment known as Lithotripsy. In this procedure stones are broken through shock waves. In 2014 he had a road accident and his thigh leg got broke. He stayed on bed for 3 months. <br /><br />In 2019 he was again admitted to the hospital for the stones and doctors suggested him open kidney surgery. First surgery was then done in March 2019 and it took 7 hours for the doctors to remove the stones from just one kidney. <br /><br />The second surgery was scheduled in September 2019 and it was then done in stages. He went to Operation room two times in two weeks and even after the surgeries when he couldn’t recover it completely broke his heart. <br /><br />His kidneys failed completely at this point.<br /><br /><strong>How he has been living now?<br /><br /></strong>Now it's been one and a half year that he is on dialysis. He suffered for 20 years and didn’t know the disease what caused this. Nobody knew that he had faulty liver which caused this. Dialysis are requiring 3 times a week to stay alive. He was diagnosed with <strong>primary hyperoxaluria type 1</strong> which is an extremely rare disease. in this disease a mutation in a gene was found. <br /><br />Doctors advised for Liver and kidney combined transplant otherwise it may turn into a life ending cancer. <br />Weakness is so much that he is having difficulty in standing up and going to washroom. This is a very difficult procedure and we are pursuing to get it done asap so that he can regain back his health. despite with the difficulties in his life Umair has always been motivated. he even completed his degree in information technology. You can help and can make a difference in Umair’s life.  He still needs a long way to go and needs your support.

<div>On April 6th, loved members of our GYTO community, Shivy and Crystal Brooks suffered the tragic loss of their son Bryce and a close family friend. Bryce, 16, was a selfless young man full of passion and love for life. Bryce was victim to a strong ocean current in Florida after his heroic action of jumping into the ocean to save a group of younger children out of the current.<b> Bryce’s actions helped to save several lives.</b> We can not even begin to understand the unimaginable impact this has had on their family, friends, and loved ones but know the power of this community.

</div>

<div><br />
</div>

<div>Our GYTO community hurts for Shivy and his family as they navigate through this heartbreaking time and many of you have asked how to help. We know the power of this community, the power of your prayers, and the power of your service and impact. Please consider making a donation to support the Brooks family during this time. Every donation can make an impact for this GYTO family member who needs us now more than ever.

<div><span style="font-family:'-apple-system-body';">The funds raised through the GoFundMe campaign will be used to cover the funeral expenses of Bryce Brooks, and the remaining amount will be used to fund the start-up of the Bryce Brooks Foundation. Bryce was a true hero, and we want to honor his memory by educating the youth with swim lessons, CPR training, and other tools to help them save lives. With your generous donations, we can help prevent future tragedies and create a lasting legacy for Bryce. Thank you for your support.</span><br />

For the Brooks Family

<div>First and foremost, we are moved beyond measure at the incredible outpouring of love, support and generosity we have received on John Owen's behalf. We knew that he was deeply loved, but we had no idea the number of lives he had impacted in his 21 years.
</div>
<div>On April 11th, while on the phone with SOS International finalizing the quote to get John Owen home on the 12th, we received the unbearable news that he had passed away. He was an extraordinary young man, a Junior at Brown University where he studied Chinese, Philosophy and Economics. We both studied together in China for a month and through his studies at Brown he became fluent in Mandarin. The day after his accident we had heard that he was accepted into the most prestigious summer banking internship program, the Barclays Financial Sponsors group in New York City. John Owen had boundless curiosity about the world and other cultures, traveling throughout Europe, the Bahamas, the United States and Lebanon.
</div>
<div>John Owen was joy and curiosity personified. He celebrated his friends, challenged and encouraged them to be better people; to dare more, to try harder, and to treat themselves and others with grace and respect. He loved to laugh, was an exceptional chef, and an extraordinary conversationalist. He was an animal and nature lover and gave the most thoughtful gifts. He was never afraid of doing the impossible and challenged others to do the same. He was lucky enough to spend his most recent 21st birthday with over 100 of his "closest" friends at Brown. The extraordinary support for our efforts shows us that those 100 friends were just the tip of an enormous iceberg. He had so many plans with friends and family for all the things they would accomplish together.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>One of the last conversations my father had with John Owen was during this trip to Morocco. John was particularly struck by the randomness of life and how he could just as easily have been born in the desert than to our parents. He was moved by the hope of those whom he met who are living in terrible conditions but dream one day of coming to America. They taught him the importance of hope and the value of never taking what you have for granted. He met a young boy who was desperate to start a website. John Owen offered to create it for him for free. He wanted to help him realize his dreams. He told my father we have it so good and that any trip around the world would prove to anyone that it’s on us to do better and be better. He often expressed the desire to establish some kind of fund or foundation to help others have access to the opportunities that he had himself at Brown. We have decided to keep this campaign going in order to help him realize that dream. Please feel free to contribute or not, but please share this with as many people as you can.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div><strong>Thank you all so very much for your incredible support, love, and generosity. As of right now, we are unsure what the true costs may amount to. Rather than setting a new target, please give as your heart says. Your gifts mean more to us and John Owen than words could ever share. </strong>
</div>
<div>My name is Jordan Habib and on behalf of my family and his friends, I am fundraising for my brother and best friend, John Owen Habib. My brother turned 21 years old just last month on March 11th. On April 1st, he suffered a catastrophic fall while on a hike with friends in Morocco. Both his femurs, his spine, and his left ankle were all broken. He has since had several surgeries including a hemicraniectomy and repairs to his ankle and both legs. Unfortunately, he has since been in a coma with limited blood circulating to his brain. The chances of survival are incredibly slim. We are doing our best to medically evacuate John Owen back to the United States, where we hope he would be treated at NYU Brooklyn Trauma Center. Since we live in Michigan, our insurance will most likely not cover all the medical expenses. <strong>UPDATE: We discovered this morning (4/10) that Brown University is unable to cover this under their insurance. Brown University has been a great support system for our family at this time. Transportation will need to be funded privately, hence the change in our fundraising goal. </strong>The funds would be used for the medical evacuation of John Owen from Morocco, potential treatment in the United States and all unexpected medical and logistical expenses.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>For those of you who know John Owen, you would know just how much he loves music. He is an incredibly talented guitar player and loves all types of music. We have been playing his favorite songs for him while we share our favorite stories and memories with him. If there are any songs or stories you would like us to share with him, please feel free to send them to jordanwhabib (gmail). Below is a video of him freestyling on the guitar. He was completely self taught.

Bring John Owen Home

<div>Hi, my name is Nedra, and my daughter Ebony was shot and killed by her husband in September 2019.  In 2017, Ebony was also shot in the leg by the same man.  It is believed that she stayed with her abuser because of his numerous threats to harm her family.  Ebony contacted law enforcement repeatedly and even when evidence was present, arrests of her abuser were not made.  She journaled that she was tired of living with the abuse and him being unfaithful in their marriage.  On the night that she was murdered, she was packing to leave the abuse for good, but unfortunately, he made sure that did not happen.
</div>

<div><br />My dream is to turn this tragedy into a triumph and keep Ebony’s memory alive by turning Ebony’s home into a transitional home for the many women in Charleston, SC who are surviving hostile or abusive environments that need a safe place to escape the domestic terror. <br /><br />Her home is in foreclosure and will be put up for auction in less than thirty days, so this is going to take a miracle.  As Charleston’s larger shelters for people escaping domestic violence decentralize and move toward a scattered-site approach, I want to continue to offer Ebony’s home where women and children can have a more home-like place of refuge to heal and regroup instead of a more sterile hotel room.  My larger dream is to extend this past Charleston and around the world.
</div>

<div><br />I am hopeful to make a difference so that other mothers and fathers will not have to prepare to go to court and continuously relive the detestation and hear how their child was gunned down in the prime of their life.  Please help me turn this tragedy into triumph and help women find a safe harbor for their turbulent waters.

Save Ebony’s Home ~ Turn Tragedy into Triumph

Our girl, Meredith Flesner Sallee, has been brave and strong as she has been fighting breast cancer for over 2 years. She and her family have recently made the decision to focus on her comfort and peace instead of the continued grueling treatments.   <br /><br />We know she has touched lives far and wide, with her kindness, compassion and joy.  Many people have asked how they can help, how to give back a tiny piece of what Meredith has given us over the years.  While most of us can't physically be with Meredith, Chris and Austin (11) currently, we can still show them love from around the world.  If you feel called to do so, please join us in celebrating Meredith and her memory by contributing to this gift for Austin and Chris.  All funds will be given to Chris to be used for Austin's education now and in the future.  <br /><br />Join us online too in the Facebook group, Memories with Meredith, to see the amazing legacy she is leaving.  Or feel free to email pictures and stories to [email redacted].
