Shakespeare wasn’t just something Blair performed. It was one of his great passions. He spent years collecting rare Shakespeare books, and that entire collection was lost in the fire.

Help Blair Rebuild After House Fire

<div>My name is Allison and I'm raising funds for my mom. On January 24th, my mom was getting ready to leave her house in Pittsburgh. There had been a lot of winter weather activity, including a recent ice storm. Mom walked to her car, slipped on the ice next to it, and smacked her head on the car door. Her face stuck to the front window due to the cold, and she eventually slid down the car onto the icy ground. She knew something was wrong, as she couldn't feel her extremities. It would later be discovered that mom had fractured her spine from her C-6 to her T-1 vertebrae, which would explain her inability to feel her limbs. She couldn't move, screamed for help until her voice went hoarse, and after roughly an hour paralyzed on the ground outside her house in below freezing weather, a neighbor found her, called for an ambulance, and kept mom company until help arrived. After staying in ICU for almost a week, she was transferred to a fabulous inpatient rehab facility through UPMC Mercy Hospital. Her care team was fantastic, and mom improved her movement immensely. She was then sent to a long-term care facility that mistreated her, and now she is residing at a different facility that is treating her much better. Mom will likely need to stay there much longer. If she is to return home, she needs to first be able to sit up unassisted, dress herself, feed herself, and be in control of her bowel and bladder functions. It's slow progress, but she's still determined. Before the accident, mom was mostly managing her finances, but now there are so many new expenses to consider. Mom will likely need a live-in home health aide, have a Hoyer lift installed in her home, and various medical-related expenses. My mom has always been the first to help those she loves, she has worked hard all of her life to provide for her family, and she believes being kind is the best thing a person can be. She is my all-time favorite person, and now she needs help.

<div>The purpose of this fundraiser is to help a dear friend and community member Rene and his wife Arely. Rene has just been detained by ICE and is currently being held in a detention center. He was right at the end of the process of getting his green card.

<div>Our families have spent a great deal of time together. I met Arely and their children first, and I could see immediately how much the children adore their dad. When I met Rene, it was heartwarming to see how much he loves them as well. Despite working about 72 hours a week as the sole provider for his family, Rene is so present, caring, and genuinely happy to be with his family, especially their new two month old baby girl. As I’ve gotten to know Rene as a friend, it is clear that he is an extremely hardworking, kind, and helpful person.

<div>This has been an absolutely devastating blow for Arely and the children. Not only has this family lost their sole source of income for their living expenses, they now face thousands of dollars in legal costs in hopes of bringing Rene home and reuniting him with his family.

<div>Simply bringing Rene home will cost upwards of $10,000, which doesn’t include the legal costs of then fighting in court to be able to stay here with his family. Additionally, Arely and the children will need money for food and other basic living expenses.

Reunite Rene with His Loving Family

<div>We wanted to share an update on Prudence and continue thanking everyone who has supported Jerome, Angela, and their family over the last few weeks. She is the daughter of our South Side kitchen manager, Jerome. He is a very hard working employee of ours and we are more than happy to be by him and his family's side during this time.

<div>Since Prudence was seriously injured on May 7 (<a href="https://www.wtae.com/article/pennsylvania-teenagers-struck-by-car-wilkinsburg/71256462" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Read Here</a>), the amount of love shown by this community has been unbelievable. From donations and meals to messages, prayers, and shares, every bit of support has meant the world to their family during an incredibly difficult time.

<div>Prudence is still recovering at UPMC Children’s Hospital and is expected to remain there through at least early June as she continues rehabilitation and therapy. A Community United for Prudence

Emma Byas has lived in her home for many years and will be 83 this June. She is a beloved member of her community and a 20+ year member of East Liberty Presbyterian Church, but now faces an urgent crisis that threatens her health and safety. A large, hazardous tree on her property has already crushed her main sewer line, leaving her without access to essential household water needs since February. Living on a fixed income, Emma cannot afford the high cost of removing the tree or repairing the damage it has caused.

 The situation has become even more critical. The tree's roots are not only damaging the foundation of Emma's home, but also those of two neighboring properties. There is now a 13-foot hole in her yard that cannot be repaired until the tree is removed, and bricks and stones from her front porch are displaced. Importantly, the porch—made from brick and stone—must be removed before any sewer repairs can be completed, making the process even more complex and urgent. A professional assessment from Davey Tree has determined that the tree is at high risk of falling, posing a direct threat to the lives of residents, pedestrians, and even traffic—raising the risk of a potentially fatal accident. The tree is a community staple, well-known to neighbors, making its removal a significant event for everyone. Without immediate action, the risk of structural collapse or physical injury grows every day.

 Funds raised will go directly to removing the hazardous tree, repairing the yard (including filling the 13-foot hole), demolishing and rebuilding the brick and stone porch, and fixing the damaged sewage line. These repairs are essential for Emma's health and well-being, and cannot be completed until the porch is removed. <div>On Thursday April 16th, my mom and brother lost everything in a devastating house fire in the Pittsburgh area.
</div>

</div>
<div>It happened so fast that there was no time to process what was unfolding. One moment, it was our home—the place we lived, laughed, ate meals, and built our life together. The next, it was gone.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>In a recent news interview, my brother Josh tried to put into words what that moment felt like… but the truth is, there really are no words for watching everything you’ve ever known disappear while you’re just trying to make it out alive. You don’t think—you just move. You just try to survive.
</div>

</div>
<div>They made it out with our lives, and we are grateful for that more than anything.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>But that is all we made it out with.
</div>

Rebuilding After the Fire: Support for Our Family

<div>You’ve heard me talk about the Columbians.  This is Johan, Leidy and their four children.  They fled Columbia a year ago due to the violence and continued socio-economic challenges resulting from the on-going armed conflict between government forces, rebel groups, paramilitaries, and drug traffickers.   They are here in Pittsburgh legally and trying to build a life for themselves.

<div>The Bloomfield apartment where they have been living was absolutely terrible!   Due to inadequate maintenance of the building by the out-of-town corporate slumlord, they had no gas - which meant no heat, no hot water, no way to cook - since the beginning of March!   The County Health Dept inspector said he finds maybe 12 to 15 issues when inspecting housing. At Leidy &amp; Johan’s he found 29 issues!  The refuge relocation organization that they have been working with moved them to Extended Stay America out by the airport until they could find a safe and healthy place for them to live.

<div>The move to the airport area made it VERY difficult for Jose and Andres to get to Arsenal School daily, for Leidy and Johan to get Hanna and Sebastian to daycare daily so that they could get to their jobs in Bloomfield and Downtown.

<div>Thankfully, we were able to find them a clean, safe house to rent in Bloomfield.  They are going to move in this weekend.  

</div>

<div>I’m hoping to raise some money for them to cover a couple of months rent to give them some breathing space.  Leidy started a new job on Monday as a room attendant at the Renaissance Hotel.  Johan is working as a painter for a contractor.

<div>Since the election of President Trump and the appointing of Brian Niccol as the CEO of Starbucks, workers at the Bloomfield Starbucks have faced an unprecedented amount of union busting. Our hours have been slashed; tenured partners and pillars of our community have been unjustly fired; many of us have been struggling to pay our bills and put food on the table. As a result, we are opening up this solidarity fund to support those of us whose livelihoods have been negatively impacted by Starbucks' union busting.

<div>Tragedy struck Long Island when <strong>HAPPY CAT SANCTUARY was hit with a house fire.</strong> <strong>CHRISTOPHER ARSENAULT, the owner and founder, lost his life while running back into the house trying to free the cats.</strong> We have over 450 cats that are still being secured and will need vetting, vaccinating, and rescues to step up and help us secure them. <strong>Please donate anything you can.</strong> We are absolutely devastated and distraught over the loss of Chris and the sanctuary. We have secured over 450 cats from the Medford Sanctuary and the upstate facility. We currently have a 4500sf free roaming indoor  facility where they will be carefully cared for until we can find land here on Long Island where Chris always wanted to build an indoor/outdoor sanctuary. The money raised will help to pay our vet bills, supplies, rent for the temporary facility and secure the land and build the new permanent sanctuary.

On Wednesday, August 7, 2024, Paul was on his way back to his investment property in Brighton Heights, Pittsburgh when he noticed an individual laying face-down in the bushes near a Senior Care Home who seemed to be injured or in need of assistance. He proceeded to park his vehicle and approached the seemingly incapacitated man to ask if he was okay and if he could assist him or retrieve help. As he looked at this man's face, he quickly realized he was severely under the influence of drugs.

<div>In a matter of seconds, a simple and kind-hearted gesture turned violent, as the man pulled out a concealed 9mm handgun from underneath him and began to fire 13 rounds, with the intent to kill. Paul was shot and perforated 8 times and grazed by multiple other bullets. The offender had to be tased in order for him to back down. These months have seen me largely confined to my couch, overwhelmed by pain, rendering me unable to engage in research or the activities that bring me joy. My inability to respond to messages and inquiries has been a source of personal regret, as my energy levels have been severely impacted.

<div>Bella got the results of her MRI and they're sobering: she has tumors around 50% of her spine, some of which are inside the channel the nerves pass through. The nerve compression from these tumors is the main source of her chronic pain.

<div>She will have to have surgery to remove as much of the tumors, as soon as possible. She also has tumors around her thyroid, brain stem, some organs, and many subcutaneous tumors.

<div>Neurofibromatosis 1 is a progressive disease, so the tumors will continue to grow even after surgery. Its likely she will need chemotherapy to try to shrink them.

<div>As you can imagine, she is terrified of spinal surgery and chemotherapy. But, she's trying to live her best life while she can.

In addition to being under severe emotional and mental stress for years, Bella has severe neurofibromatosis - a chronic condition that causes tumors throughout her body. Literally hundreds of them on her scalp, chest, hips, limbs, lungs, thyroid - pretty much everywhere. The main treatments are surgery or localized radiation, but the condition will continue to progress through her life.

The fur-baby of Pittsburgh local Heather Anderson, Hank started to show medical symptoms 5/15 Monday morning and quickly got worse. Heather could see the signs of potential internal bleeding and rushed him to the PVSEC on Camp Horne Rd. He was admitted and assessed. As of 5/16, Hank was diagnosed with Immune Thrombocytopenia, a blood condition where he can't create enough platelets and in turn cannot heal wounds. What we know at this point is that he will need to start taking medication daily to jump-start his immune response.

<div> Hi friends, my name is Laura Jean McLaughlin and I have been a full-time artist for over 20 years, maintaining the Clay Penn studio in the Garfield community of Pittsburgh. I create large, heavy clay and mosaic pieces, but my body is starting to poop out on me! My knees can no longer continue to support me lifting these heavy ceramic pieces regularly. I have to have both of my knees fully replaced starting with my left knee on February 7th, followed by the right knee after the left knee heals. After each knee replacement surgery, I will need physical therapy and lots of rest while my knees heal.
The doctor said I will not be able to work for at least 3 months, 6-8 weeks per knee, due to the physical nature of my studio practice. I have held off as long as possible for the surgery but have reached a point where I can't handle the pain any longer. I am shyly asking for donations to help cover my loss of income and out-of-pocket medical expenses and to help pay for food and medicine to care for the many creatures that have found a safe haven at the Clay Penn and my home.
My working practice includes creating clay sculptures, tile murals, and functional clay pieces that I sell through galleries and to the public. Over the years, I have worked with well over 100 schools and communities to create collaborative mosaics. One of my newest commissioned pieces is a 10’ x 15’ porcelain tile mural on the Andy Warhol Museum. Another large piece that I collaboratively created is “Southside Schlumpy Funk,” a 77-step mosaic steps mural created with the Southside Slopes community. Two additional community mosaics include a 107-foot bench for the Carnegie Library in Carnegie, Pa., and the Octopus Garden in Friendship, where Octavia and Doris, two large mosaic sculptures reside. These are just a few examples illustrating my work's physical nature, which requires me to lift heavy things regularly.

A Habitat of Life

<div><strong>Have you noticed that this fall has been spectacularly colorful? For our family, it has been a technicolor ride of emotions.</strong> On September 16th, my sister Veronica Galasso learned that she has invasive ductal HER2 triple-positive breast cancer on the right side. At 35, Veronica found her cancer before her very first mammogram. To add insult to injury, this diagnosis, unfortunately, comes after a few tough years of stress and loss.

<div>These last weeks have been filled with an onslaught of scans and procedures, many doctors appointments and scary conversations about what comes next. All the while, Veronica has put one foot in front of another and inspired us all with her determination. Together, we will get through this.

<div>Veronica is my “little” sister (she came along when I was 11, and I was a lucky girl who had a real-life human baby doll:) Veronica lives in Harrisburg, PA, with her husband Bobby, just down the way from our mom Brenda. Veronica has dedicated her adult years doing care work--first for developmentally disabled people and for the last six years as a Patient Service Representative alongside the fantastic team at Urology of Central PA.

<div><strong>What Comes Next</strong>

<div>Evaluated at Stage 1B, Veronica is eligible and has chosen to participate in a breast cancer treatment trial study. Not only does this help contribute to scientific breast cancer research, but it also decreases her number of treatment rounds and therefore decreases her exposure to the possible effects of the chemotherapy drugs. Her treatment plan will be to undergo 4 rounds of chemo treatment (instead of 6!)--each treatment being 3 weeks apart. She kicked off her first treatment on Thursday, October 27th. Chemo #1--✅! Her other treatments are scheduled for November 16th, December 7th and 28th. Her surgery will be scheduled for the new year, and her total treatment will happen over a total of 1 year. This will be a long road with twists and turns along the way.

But don’t get me started about the injustices of our broken healthcare system.)

Help Melt Away Veronica's Stress & Breast Cancer

<div>My name is Carole Corcoran.  We have been friends since we first met working at Cape Cod Hospital on North Medical, and Deb worked for years in the ER before moving to FLA. Deb LaSalle has lost everything due to the raging Cat 4 Hurricane Ian.  She was lucky to get out with her car and a few items.  Five feet of water including sewage surged through her condo (and her neighbors) destroying all her furniture, clothing and personal items.  Nothing is salvageable.  Anything you can give will be so appreciated.  Deb is in need of the basics-toiletries, clothing, housing, etc.  It is going to take months and months for Fema, State and Federal assistance and to rebuild.  She has a very long road ahead of her until life returns to any normalicy.  This disaster has also effected her entire family and grandchildren.  The loses are devastating but Deb and her family feel blessed that they are all okay.  Today Deb is out in her communtiy helping at a disaster table as I type this. <div>On Tuesday, May 3rd, 2022, my sister Ashley was severely injured in a traumatic accident in Peters Township due to a mechanical failure on her vehicle.

<div>She was in the process of taking her kids to school when she placed her vehicle in park and stepped out to grab a book bag from inside of the house. As soon as she stepped out of the vehicle, it started rolling. Due to the slope of the driveway, her vehicle (with all three children inside) began rolling backward and toward a neighbor’s home.

<div>Ashley frantically attempted to get back inside and was successfully able to jerk the steering wheel, causing the vehicle to change course and back into a hillside next to the driveway. This action stopped the vehicle from rolling toward a public roadway, other houses, children walking to their bus stops, and ultimately allowed my niece and nephews to escape unscathed from physical injury.

<div>In the process of doing so, Ashley was run over by the vehicle resulting in critical injuries to multiple areas of her body. She was immediately airlifted to Allegheny General Hospital after receiving tremendous care from firefighter/paramedics with Peters Township Fire Department. She will undergo surgery today to attempt to stabilize multiple fractures in her pelvis, hips, and spine, among other injuries that will require further treatment.

<div>As most of you know, Greg Scampone was working at his pizza shop in Oakmont, PA on Sunday March 6th and was shot 6 times during an armed robbery protecting his shop and employees. He was shot in both thighs, knee, upper abdomen and chest, fracturing both femurs, damaging parts of his stomach, spleen and liver and just missing his heart. If you know Greg, you know him to be a strong, funny and kind guy who would do anything for anyone. The road to recovery will be a long one. Any contribution would help. Last year due to COVID, I lost my job as a teacher. I'm a single mom of 2 little ones with no family in the US other than having really loving and caring friends around us.<br /><br />After losing my job, I decided to start a little co-op/childcare with just a couple of families. That way I could have enough money to pay rent and some other bills and do what I love while offering affordable childcare to the community.  This is how "Mi Casita" began. I invested in the house where I live to make it safe for the children and to have a peaceful environment where life felt as what we used to call "normal" before COVID.<br /><br />Today my landlord told me that she has decided not to renew my lease and sell the house. I have until June 30th to buy this property for $99,000 or to move out. <br /><br />I'm really worried because this time a move is not only relocating my family but also finding a place to continue with "Mi Casita", which as  you can imagine is extremely challenging to find an affordable place to rent that is suitable for childcare and moving is an additional expense.<br /><br />I usually don't ask for help and try to take care of everything by myself. But I think now I have to reach out to you for help. I figured if I could reach out to as many people as possible maybe I could make this work?<br /><br />I can't get a loan because my income is so low, and due to losing my job I don't have enough time being considered self-employed.<br /><br />For every donation, I will send you a pic and a drawing made by the kids from "Mi Casita"<br /><br />Mi Casita is an Spanish immersion home childcare where we learn about nature, kindness, caring for others and also for our animals (chickens and bunnies).
