My name is Allison and I'm raising funds for my mom. On January 24th, my mom was getting ready to leave her house in Pittsburgh. There had been a lot of winter weather activity, including a recent ice storm. Mom walked to her car, slipped on the ice next to it, and smacked her head on the car door. Her face stuck to the front window due to the cold, and she eventually slid down the car onto the icy ground. She knew something was wrong, as she couldn't feel her extremities. It would later be discovered that mom had fractured her spine from her C-6 to her T-1 vertebrae, which would explain her inability to feel her limbs. She couldn't move, screamed for help until her voice went hoarse, and after roughly an hour paralyzed on the ground outside her house in below freezing weather, a neighbor found her, called for an ambulance, and kept mom company until help arrived. After staying in ICU for almost a week, she was transferred to a fabulous inpatient rehab facility through UPMC Mercy Hospital. Her care team was fantastic, and mom improved her movement immensely. She was then sent to a long-term care facility that mistreated her, and now she is residing at a different facility that is treating her much better. Mom will likely need to stay there much longer. If she is to return home, she needs to first be able to sit up unassisted, dress herself, feed herself, and be in control of her bowel and bladder functions. It's slow progress, but she's still determined. Before the accident, mom was mostly managing her finances, but now there are so many new expenses to consider. Mom will likely need a live-in home health aide, have a Hoyer lift installed in her home, and various medical-related expenses. My mom has always been the first to help those she loves, she has worked hard all of her life to provide for her family, and she believes being kind is the best thing a person can be. She is my all-time favorite person, and now she needs help.
