Support Michael Filby — The 80-Year-Old Pensioner Keeping Australia’s Cleanest Highway
Beautiful
For more than 20 years, Michael Filby has dedicated himself to a remarkable act of community
service. Now 80 years old, Michael still goes out every single week in his old 4WD, collecting
rubbish along the South Western Highway to protect our forests, wildlife and landscapes.
Over decades of this quiet, relentless work, Michael has personally removed hundreds of tons of
litter — bottles, broken glass, metal, plastic and dangerous debris that would otherwise harm
wildlife and scar one of the most scenic routes in Western Australia. He has done almost all of this
at his own expense, paying for fuel, equipment and vehicle maintenance simply because he
cares. During this period, he has covered the equivalent of three circumnavigations of the
planet in road-cleaning trips along this 250 km stretch. Thanks to Michael’s dedication, this
section of highway is known by many as the cleanest highway in Australia.
Now It’s Our Turn to Support Him
At 80, Michael wants to keep going — and to help ensure this work continues into the future. Funds
raised will support:
• Fuel and maintenance for his vehicle (currently averaging $10,000 per year)
• Safety and collection equipment
• Assistance and training for future volunteers to carry on his legacy
If You’ve Ever Travelled This Highway — Please Show Your Appreciation
If you’ve enjoyed driving this beautifully clean highway, admired the scenery, or benefited from
Michael’s decades of effort, please consider donating as a way of saying thank you and helping his
work continue.
Every contribution helps honour a lifetime of service — and keeps our roads and wildlife safe.
Thank you for supporting Michael and the place he loves.
lets help keep this beautiful place litter free.
