Heart Broken Benji the Beagle
Everyday there are stories here. Some are heartwarming others heart breaking.
We have a beagle we named Benji, he is a sad little dog that already has been through more trauma than any soul deserves. He was on the run for weeks, maybe months all alone, hungry, cold and wet, hot, thirsty and in pain.
Benji was trapped by Kim and Rick Canales and though they deal with these all the time this one is a tough one. Benji came in terrified, so scared he just wanted to disappear. We spent the first day giving him space, some meds for pain and some sedation so he could relax. We pulled more than 60 ticks off of him some leaving cuts in his skin because they had become so engorged. Benji has been eating and again we have been giving him the space he needs but also giving him nothing but love and kindness. Today he went to the vet, he is still trying to be invisible but never once has this dog displayed any aggression or the threat of a bite, he just has more grief than his little heart can hold. Along with being emaciated and bit up he had a limp.
The limp is from an injury about 2 months old where someone shot him and shattered his leg.
This dog endured unimaginable pain for at least two months and we understand why he wants to be invisible, but even with the pain when the leg was being examined and the bullet hole explored there was never a thought of a bite or violence. Just a sweet little dog who has been betrayed beyond what he could ever understand. Or any of us understand.
Amazingly he is heartworm negative and so we can proceed with trying to give Benji a life filled with love for maybe the first time ever. First, he will need to have the leg amputated, then he needs a home where he can relax and heal. His leg and his heart. This is one that needs prayers, financial help and love from everyone. You can make a difference by donating today to Humane Society of Monroe County.
