I’m proud to be participating in a companywide GoFundMe internal challenge, alongside teammates across GoFundMe, to support the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP).

This challenge is about coming together as a workplace community to rally around a cause that touches so many of our lives—often more personally than we realize. Across teams and departments, we’re raising funds, sharing this campaign, and encouraging one another to turn our values into meaningful action.

My name is Guissu Baier, and this cause is deeply personal to me. Like many people, I’ve seen firsthand how mental health struggles can affect individuals and families, and how powerful it can be when someone feels supported rather than alone. That’s why I’m passionate about supporting AFSP.

AFSP is one of the nation’s leading nonprofit organizations dedicated to saving lives and bringing hope to those affected by suicide. Through research, education, advocacy, and community-based support, they work to turn awareness into lifesaving change and help create a culture that is informed, compassionate, and proactive about mental health.

Together, through this internal challenge, we’re raising funds to support critical initiatives such as mental health education, life-saving research, and advocacy for stronger, evidence-based policies. But this campaign is about more than fundraising—it’s about showing up for one another, reducing stigma, and reinforcing that help and connection matter.

Last year was one of the hardest mental health years of my life.

I’ve been open about the fact that I have struggled, and so do members of my family. When you walk through a season like that — especially as a parent — you see just how fragile mental health can be. You see how quietly so many people are carrying heavy things. And you realize how much stigma still keeps people from asking for help.

As a mom, and as someone who has spent my career in the nonprofit sector, I believe deeply that we can do better for one another. Silence doesn’t protect us. Community does.

That’s why I’m raising money for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP).

AFSP funds critical research, educates communities, supports survivors, and advocates for stronger public policy. They are doing the hard, necessary work of saving lives and bringing hope to families who desperately need it.

And to make things interesting — we’re currently in a company-wide fundraising challenge. I’ll be honest: I really want to win. Not for bragging rights (okay, maybe a little ), but because winning means more dollars going directly toward life-saving mental health work.

A few years ago, I lost my dad to suicide.

There isn’t a day he isn’t with me - in the advice I still hear in my head, the way I parent, the way I love my family, the way I sail, the way I try to show up for people.

We didn’t get to save him. But that doesn’t have to be everyone’s story.

As a long-time military spouse, I've witnessed both the strength and the struggles of our service members and their families. The sacrifices they make are immense, and sadly, I have also seen the tragic impact of suicide on those we love. Unfortunately, our community has been touched by loss to many times. Friends, families and fellow military spouses have faced heartbreak that words cannot capture. These losses leave behind unanswered questions, grief, and a painful reminder of how important mental health and support are in our community. This personal experience drives my passion for change and my commitment to this cause.

15 days of cold plunges in support of mental health, and to raise funds for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

Mental health touches all of us in one way or another—through our own experiences or through people we care about. It’s something that shapes how we see the world, how we connect with others, and how we take care of ourselves. It also reminds us how strong people can be, how invisible some battles are, and how important it is that we talk openly about mental health instead of hiding it.

Mental health challenges are often misunderstood. Behind the labels and statistics are real people—friends, family members, neighbors, and colleagues—who are navigating difficult moments while still trying to live full, meaningful lives.

What many people don’t realize is how closely mental health struggles and suicide can be linked. Millions of people face these challenges every day, and far too many families are affected. These aren’t just numbers; they represent people who matter deeply and whose lives have meaning and impact.

Too often, people don’t talk about mental health because it feels uncomfortable, or because they’re afraid of being judged, or because they don’t know what to say. Silence can be one of the hardest parts. When we don’t talk about it, people feel alone—and when people feel alone, everything can feel heavier.

I’m sharing this because I want to be part of changing that. I want to live in a world where it’s safe to talk about what we’re going through, where asking for help is seen as strength, and where no one feels like they have to carry their struggles quietly.

To help raise awareness and funds, I’m committing to 15 days of cold plunges for the rest of February. It may be uncomfortable, but it’s a small challenge compared to what so many people and families live with every day.

My daughter and I have lost two important people in our lives to suicide — her father in 2016, my father in 2022. Breaking that news to her, twice, remains the hardest thing I have ever done. She was 8 when we lost her father, and 14 when we lost mine. In the years since, we have learned to hold joy and grief at the same time: every milestone celebrated, every milestone shadowed by the ones who should have been there to see it.

This campaign is about turning our grief into action. As I celebrate my 36th birthday this March, I’ve been reflecting a lot on how I want to show up in the world and for the people I care about. For my birthday this year, I’ve decided to fundraise for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

This cause connects deeply to my personal mission - one I wrote when I was 10 and still live by - to make a positive and lasting difference in the world around me, every day. At the core of that is helping people feel like they belong, that they’re appreciated, and that they’re never alone. AFSP’s work to bring hope and support to those affected by suicide really embodies those values for me.

My goal is $500 for my 36th birthday (and anything beyond that is incredible!), but truly, there’s no pressure at all. If donating feels right, I’d be so grateful. And if sharing the campaign or simply holding this cause in your heart is what feels best, that means just as much.
