Bay Area friends of mine, Addy &amp; Trevor, have family in Jamaica who have been horribly impacted by Hurricane Melissa — their siblings, children and grandchildren. The families live outside of local services, “in the boonies” as Addy says. Roofs were blown off &amp; houses left in shambles. Medical care is scarce. Food is scarce. Work has become scarce. Addy &amp; Trevor's families desperately need generators so that they can maintain connections, money to rebuild their homes &amp; for food &amp; basic supplies . I know many in the U.S. are also hurting because of the huge hit to medical insurance, food insecurity due to aborted SNAP benefits, and even job insecurity, but to those of you who can help even a little (a little goes a long way!), please consider making a contribution to our Go Fund Me campaign. At only age 48, Sabrina struggles to continue the same work that has supported her for the last few decades. <strong>Her artistic livelihood - the foundation she built on live teaching, creating books and making her beloved art - is in jeopardy as her symptoms increase.</strong>

Support Sabrina Ward Harrison's Battle with Parkinson's

<div>On February 6, 2023 at 4:17am local time, a massive earthquake struck Turkey with the epicenter being the city of Gaziantep. This is Cengiz's hometown and where most of his family currently resides. One of his sisters lives in Malatya which was heavily damaged and is in very bad shape, but we are so relieved she and her family are safe for now. However, we learned today that some of his cousin's family members were lost when their buildings collapsed. Several were young children. This is an unspeakable tragedy and their challenges are only just beginning.

<div>We are so fortunate that Cengiz's sisters, brothers, brothers in-law, father, nieces and nephews are all safe and were able to leave Antep before the 2nd quake struck for their homes in Burc. They have generously opened their respective houses to dozens of extended family, neighbors and strangers who have lost their homes. They are each sheltering and providing all meals for everyone until they are able to return to Antep. The cost for this will be very high so I'm organizing a drive to help offset some of this cost for them.

<div>Thanks to your extraordinary generosity, baby Sur and his parents were able to board an air ambulance to a hospital in Mexico City (within 24 hours of starting this fundraiser). Sur is stable, and his parents were able to sleep a little bit for the first time since the birth. From initial medical exams, we have been informed that Sur's issues are centered around his lungs. The lungs are still growing to their proper form and size. We are still awaiting specific information on what the costs of the medical bills will be. Thank you thank you thank you for your support! <p>One of my favorite parts of visiting Esther is that the living room consists of a couch, and a stand with all the trophies her daughters have won over the years. It's clear what Esther values in life, but she also deserves a trophy. She raised three highly decorated Ivy League graduates as a single, working, undocumented mother. Inspired by their mother's experience, both of the daughters who have graduated are embarking on careers in nonprofit work and community organizing.

<p>Esther is still working as a housekeeper and has fallen behind several months on rent. (Of course Esther wasn't going to tell a soul, but her daughters stumbled across the past due notice.) This campaign is to recognize her tremendous accomplishment as a parent. In lieu of a trophy, hopefully we can give her a bit of security.  And maybe a trip. To Connecticut. <strong>Marcus Books is the oldest independent Black bookstore in the country. </strong><br /><br /><img src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/47267512_1586371850944626_r.jpeg" alt="47267512_1586371850944626_r.jpeg" width="100%" media_type="3" /><br />The bookstore’s founders, Drs. Raye and Julian Richardson met at Tuskegee University which they both attended. In 1946 Julian started Success Printing Co. in the Fillmore District of San Francisco and in 1960, the two founded Marcus Books (named after political activist and author Marcus Garvey). Together — and through both the publishing press and bookstore — they fiercely advocated for Black history, exchange, and knowledge of self. They published now canonical books (that had before their resurrection gone out of print) and work by independent authors, poets, and artists. Marcus Books is an institution where those who have written books, produced visual work and more can see themselves on a shelf, wall or counter surrounded by other Black makers.<br /><br />Alongside Marcus Books’ legacy of Black publishing is an investment in nourishing Black readership, no matter what age. Generations of families have grown up in the store: the student coming to find course material, our incarcerated brothers and sisters writing to put in book orders, the parents who bring their children to the store much like their parents did for/with them. World renowned author or prophetic local poet, elder or toddler, Marcus Books has provided something for you. <br /><br /><strong>At Marcus Books “Black” is not a subject, a single month, or a niche; it is the universe. "Black” is not just history; it is the present and the future.</strong><br /><br />60 years since its opening, the bookstore has become a literary and cultural hallmark that has hosted iconic authors including Toni Morrison, Rosa Parks, Muhammad Ali, Maya Angelou, Walter Mosley, Angela Davis, Terry McMillan, Chaka Khan, Michael Eric Dyson, Iyanla Vanzant, Sister Souljah, Nikki Giovanni, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Patti LaBelle and so many more of our treasured voices. Just as important are the bookclubs, intimate poetry readings, and countless customer conversations that unfold at Marcus.   <br /><br />Moved by her support for Black bookstores and love for Marcus Books, dedicated Marcus Books customer Folasade Adesanya (founder of <a href="http://www.blacksyllabus.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Black Syllabus</a>) began a campaign to raise funds to support the store through its temporary closure due to COVID 19. This pandemic has only exacerbated the struggles that Black bookstores have faced. Between 1999 and 2014, the number of Black bookstores declined by 83%, from 325 to only 54. Folasade’s call to action was met by your incredible response. Black bookstores must be preserved. <br /><br />With your extraordinary support, our original goal was met! Wow. Thank you to everyone who contributed to this fundraiser. Your immediate backing has been nothing short of inspiring and the Marcus Books family is deeply grateful for the love everyone has shown! Most grateful are the founders’ children, Blanche Richardson, Billy Richardson, and Karen Johnson, who own and run the store. This campaign is a testament to the power of collective effort, particularly during this challenging moment which impacts us all in drastic ways. We do not take it lightly that in a moment of global crisis, our community shows kindness. Marcus Books 60th Anniversary Fundraiser

<strong>A Message from Elaine Katzenberger, Publisher and CEO of City Lights Booksellers &amp; Publishers:</strong><br /><br /> <br />When Lawrence Ferlinghetti tells the story of founding City Lights Bookstore in 1953, he talks about meeting a need. At that time, he says, there was no public place for writers and readers to experience community in San Francisco, and his goal was to create a “literary meeting place” where all would feel welcome. He stocked his new bookshop with affordable paperbacks and kept City Lights open late hours as a way to provide the opportunity for working folks and bohemian types alike to partake in the scene and to mingle with each other. The idea was an immediate success, as the city’s intellectuals and literati quickly made the bookshop their home base and meeting ground. As Ferlinghetti says, “Once we opened up the doors, we could hardly get them closed at night, the place was always packed!”<br /><br />Fast forward to 2020, and although much has changed in our city and our world, City Lights is still a vital and beloved literary hangout. Each year thousands of people from out of town and around the world make it a point to visit, and our rich community of Bay Area authors, poets and avid readers consider the bookstore a second home, an essential key to a sense of belonging. At this point, almost 70 years since its founding, there are multiple generations, local and distant, who derive a sense of comfort and inspiration from simply knowing that a place like City Lights can still exist, a place that’s driven by ideals, unwavering in its commitment, grounded in a utopian vision of the potential for human creativity to make a better, richer world for all. A steady beacon, City Lights is there whenever we need a place to feel at home with our fellow humans, their ideas and aspirations, their curiosities and their wild dreams of a new beginning. <br /><br />In fact, for many of us, a world without City Lights is something we don’t want to imagine. For me, personally, it hurts to think of that.<br /><br />I have had the huge privilege of spending 33 years at City Lights, learning the crafts of bookselling and publishing, working on a project that feels irrefutably meaningful. During all that time, it has never once seemed possible that our momentum could falter and our project could fail, but we’re all in uncharted terrain now. City Lights is faced with formidable challenges at present: our bookstore has been closed to the public since March 16, and must remain closed for an indefinite period of time. Unlike some shops, we’re unable even to process online orders, since we want our booksellers to remain safely at home. <strong>With no way to generate income, our cash reserves are quickly dwindling, with bills coming due and with a primary commitment to our staff, who we sent home with full pay and healthcare, and who we hope to keep as healthy and financially secure as possible.</strong><br /><br />I want to reassure you that we’re doing everything in our power to keep City Lights intact, and to position this beloved institution to play a vital role in what is for now a very uncertain future. We know how much we’re all going to need this place again, this home away from home where we can find each other once more, in person and in books. <br /><br />We’re exploring every means of possible support, including federal and local grants and loans, but these funds are not guaranteed to come in, and they won’t meet the needs of our short-term future. And so, we must humbly ask for your support. <strong>We know what a difficult and uncertain time this is for everyone, and we understand that there are many individuals and organizations in need. If you’re in a position to support us we’ll be extremely grateful to receive that help, and any donation to this campaign will contribute to the cash resources we need to address the immediate future, to take care of our staff, and to create the structures to take City Lights into the future. KEEP CITY LIGHTS BOOKS ALIVE

In the past six months, our beloved yoga teacher and healer, Traci, has been in the midst of a serious health challenge. With the great support and wisdom of a team of medical and health providers, she is getting the treatments she needs to heal. Unfortunately, many of the medications, therapies, and treatments are not covered by insurance -- and those that are include co-payments and deductibles. (Currently her out-of-pocket weekly expenses are approximately $1500.)<br /><br />As  longtime students,  in gratitude for all Traci has given us and continues to share, we are asking for your consideration in contributing financially to her medical care. Although Traci was reluctant to consent to asking her sangha for help, she agreed to accept our support so she can heed her medical team's recommendation to cut back on her work and focus on her healing.<br /><br />Your participation of any degree contributes to Traci's health care costs. Future Innovators and Leaders Start Here: No matter what your child decides to do when they grow up, STEM will play a BIG part in their future. <br /><br />As many of you know, I work at a school in a very remote area of Northern California. 100% of our students receive free breakfast, lunch and dinner (if in our after school program). 6 out of 7 schools are on Tribal Lands. Many of our students struggle with getting a chance to experience what others get to see and do because of our geographical location and most of the families in our area are not as fortunate.  <br /><br />I am trying to raise money so that two of my students from last year can attend National Youth Leadership Forum (NYLF) Pathways to Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). Kimi Wagenfuhr and Isabelle Tracy are Bright, Hard Working, Go-Getters and future leaders who deserve a chance to see the world and show off their amazing skills. <br /><br />A few months back I nominated these two students in hopes that at least one of them would get an invitation to attend their Envision STEM Summer Program. Last week I received invitations for not just one but both of them. This is a huge honor and I do not want them to miss out. <br /><br />The cost for the 6 days is about $3,000 per student. This does not include travel, lodging and food to get down to the camp and that is why I included an extra $2,000 because travel from Willow Creek, California can be tricky and expensive. <br /><br />*** The first payment is due May, 22nd so I am hoping to get at least some of the money if not all by May 22nd. ***<br /><br />Please read below to see what the program is about:<br /><br />NYLF Pathways to STEM is a unique learning experience for bright, forward-thinking elementary school students who will evolve into next generation innovators, engineers, doctors, software developers, and scientists. Helping two former students attend NYLF Stem

The Camp Fire, California's deadliest wildfire, rages on.  So far, 52,000 people have been evacuated, 11,000 homes burned, 71 confirmed dead, and over a thousand still missing. <br />Jose Uriarte's taco and burrito shop, Gordo Burrito in Chico, CA, is just outside the wildfire's range.  Every day, Jose, who immigrated from Guamuchil, Sinaloa, gives free food to the firefighters, EMTs, police and social workers working tirelessly to serve their fire-ravaged community.<br /><br /><br /> Sunday, he closed up the storefront, gathered up a crew, and drove his taco truck out to the Elk's Lodge wildfire evacuation camp.  The scene that greeted him was apocalyptic.<br /><img src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/34629062_1542494238753134_r.jpeg" width="100%" media_type="3" alt="34629062_1542494238753134_r.jpeg" /><br />In a phone interview, Jose could not find words to describe the scope of the devastation.  "It's so...big," he said, before going on to describe how the dense smoke blocked out the sun and made everything "cold and surreal."<br /><img src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/34629062_1542494394149021_r.jpeg" width="100%" media_type="3" alt="34629062_1542494394149021_r.jpeg" /><br />When he arrived at the Elk's Lodge refuge, Jose was met by hundreds of shell-shocked evacuees, families who had lost everything: their homes, jobs, all their possessions.<br /> <br />So he got to work, giving out tacos, burritos, and tamales to over 300 people. Gordo Burrito Camp Fire Support

Conrad was born on May 21st 2006. In February 2007 while on a trip visiting family we noticed pin size dots all over his legs. After speaking to an on call pediatrician we were instructed to take him the Children's hospital at Clarian North in Indiana. After several pokes with a needle we had our answer. Conrad was diagnosed with Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP). This diagnoses meant that for some reason Conrad’s body was attacking his own platelets. I did not understand the severity of this diagnosis but quickly realized this was a bleeding disorder. Having ITP meant that we would have to watch every move, fall, bump that Conrad made because one bump could cause internal bleeding. We were told that if his platelets were too low he could have internal bleeding.<br /><br />For six years Conrad had blood drawn multiple times a week and had several trips to the ER. The simplest bump on his shin would require a lab test to determine if his platelets we at a safe level to prevent internal bleeding. Many times Conrad was put on medications to temporarily increase his platelet level but these were only short fixes. Because Conrad was not getting better his hematologist decided to run more test and found out that Conrad was not making enough antibodies. So now Conrad had a new Diagnosis called Common Variable Immune Deficiency. This was more complicated because now not only did he have a bleeding disorder he had a higher risk of developing over 150 other types of auto-immune disorders. For about a year Conrad had a nurse come to the house to administer medication through an IV monthly. This medication boosted his immune system but did nothing for the bleeding. In 2015 while Conrad's father was on a deployment overseas Conrad was given a medication called Rituximab. This medication is used to treat some autoimmune disorders and some cancers and the doctors believed it might help with his bleeding. Conrad only received 3 out of the 4 treatments because of the reactions he had to the medication. Unfortunately this treatment did not work and Conrad was back in the hospital for an uncontrolled bleeding issue.<br /><br />In late 2016 Conrad's father took a job at McGuire AFB and we moved from California to New Jersey. Who knew that this move would change Conrad's whole world. Conrad was seen at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and was quickly diagnosed with Wiskott Aldrich Syndrome. This was not a diagnoses that I wanted to hear. Wiskott Aldrich syndrome is a rare genetic disorder that effects 1 out of 1million births and is primarily in males. This genetic disorder keeps the immune system from functioning property and puts Conrad at an elevated risk for increased bleeding, autoimmune disorders and lymphoma and other cancers. We were told that the only cure for this disorder is for Conrad to undergo a bone marrow transplant. On June 26 Conrad will be admitted at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia where he will have Chemotherapy and the bone marrow transplant.<br /><br />     The funds raised will help cover expenses not covered by insurance as well as for the decrease in income while we are with him at the hospital.  <br /><br />     The people that I work with have also set up a fundraising event for us as well:<br />     <br />Medford V.F.W. Conrad's Journey

We need your help!!!<br />A year ago, our lives changed upon learning we had a six-month-old grandson named Abe living in foster care. Our daughter Shanel has been diagnosed with a mental disorder and refuses any medical assistance. It has put her in a very sad situation of living on the streets. We had no contact with her until seven months ago when she gave birth to another baby named Kali.<br />Both babies were in a foster home until July 28th when the foster family decided to terminate their care. DSHS asked us to take them into our home; we opened our door and our hearts to these two beautiful children, but it has not been the easiest transition. The state has not followed through on many promises they made to assist us in caring for the babies, which has placed a significant financial burden on us with no time to prepare. The daycare recommended to us turned into a nightmare of neglect and poor care for the kids. We removed them from this facility, which forced Joe to stay home from work and take care of the kids while we looked for new childcare. We just placed Abe, but most daycares will not accept Kali until she becomes a year old. We are not sure how soon we can get her placed so that Joe may return to work.<br />We truly believe these babies should be with family and desperately want to care for them. It is very difficult for us to ask for and admit that we need help, but your generosity would immensely alleviate the financial struggles we are facing and help us change these babies’ lives for the better. Both children have been affected by harmful drugs in the womb and need medical care and attention. But more than anything, Abe and Kali need clothes, books, toys, diapers, and love just like any other babies. We so appreciate the support we have received from friends and family, including financial aid and assistance with childcare.
