Help Idaho Statesman staff pay bills after McClatchy layoffs

 My name is Kayla, my big sister, Samantha, was in a car crash during hurricane Lala. She was driving home after taking me to work, and a man coming down the hill hit her head on. They suspect he died of a heart attack before smashing into her. She shattered both of her femurs and broke her hip, both the ball and the socket. She spent around 7 hours in surgery to repair the damage to her legs. She will be completely non weight bearing for 6-10 weeks. We are asking for help because we live so far from the hospital and rehab centers and stuff. We have a little savings of our own, but it’s draining fast traveling so far every day to be with Sammy, plus none of us are currently working and Mom will probably have to miss work until Sam can walk again. We are hoping to find a rental closer to town. The house we live in is on post and pier, and is also very small. We just need to get closer to town and in a bigger place so that she can come home and we can take care of her. Live For Lexie

On April 29, our cousins Shane and Melynda Willis with their two children, were involved in a tragic car accident. The children only suffered minor injuries, but sadly, Shane and Melynda did not survive the accident. Shane and Melynda, long time residents of Moscow, Idaho, were new to their community in Pierre, South Dakota, but quickly became beloved for their warmth and generosity. Shane’s long time career with Les Schwab brought them to Pierre, and Melynda continued her career with the University of Idaho. They were the most amazing parents, always surrounding their kids with love and extended family, and actively participating in family reunions. Their commitment to creating a nurturing environment for their children was evident in everything they did.

 Shane and Melynda were also supportive members of their community, always ready to lend a hand or offer guidance. They saw every opportunity to be positive mentors and were known for their kindness and willingness to help others. <div>After multiple tests, including imaging and a biopsy, we received the diagnosis:

<div>We are still in the early stages of understanding the full picture. Wyatt has undergone extensive testing, including a PET scan to determine the stage and spread of the cancer.

<div>• Bone marrow appears strong (pending final confirmation)

My close cousins, which includes her eldest daughter (a senior citizen), her son (a disabled double amputee), and her grandson (an ARMY veteran), have all been displaced and left to pick up the pieces after losing nearly everything. This home has been the center of our family for almost 50 years, and seeing my loved ones go through this has been incredibly difficult. It was also a second home to my oldest son Rakiem. Many of you, or your family members, may know my aunt Goldie Maple. She was a pillar in the Far Rockaway community. Some of her works include fighting tirelessly to ensure that the children of the Rockaway area received a quality education. She served on the Community School Board. J.H.S.198 along with Bch. 56th St. have both been renamed after her, in her honor. She also worked within the political arena and served as a community activist to help provide human rights and justice for Rockaway residents. While we are grateful that everyone made it out safely, the challenges they now face are overwhelming. They urgently need temporary housing and support to help them rebuild their lives. The cost of finding a safe place to stay, along with starting the process of recovery, are more than we can manage alone. As the niece of Goldie Maple, watching our family struggle through this, has been heart-wrenching. Upon her pass, this family home was left to her children. We would like to save and preserve it. I’ve always been interested in politics, participating in my school's Model United Nations club and its leadership team, taking school trips to Boise to tour the capitol and meet our legislature, and thoroughly enjoying my history and government classes. This year, I have the great opportunity to work and live in our state capital, <strong>as a page for the Idaho legislature</strong>. The program recommends staying with family or friends, but I don't have either in Boise. Due to this, I am in charge of finding my own housing, transportation, food, and utilities for my stay. I am more than happy to do this—I am so honored to be chosen for this position. While we have lost our business, community center, and livelihoods, there are many who have lost their lives and homes in this storm as well and our greater community also needs all the support it can get.

She has started Chemotherapy again and has been having low white blood cell count. The shots required to boost her white blood cell count are expensive.

Her case, like many others, shows how easily and quickly anyone can become the target of online abuse from the spread of unfounded accusations.

<div>In November 2022, her attorneys sent two cease and desist notices in an attempt to end the harmful statements and protect Dr. Scofield, her husband, and two young children. The TikTok user mocked these attempts. Thus, in December 2022, Dr. Scofield filed a federal defamation lawsuit to fight these unwarranted online attacks. Despite her attempts to resolve the case quickly, her legal fees have far outpaced her resources. As her lawyers estimate it could be another year before the case is resolved, it will cost a substantial amount of money to continue to contest these baseless claims and address counterclaims. Throughout the case, the TikTok user has continued to make new false statements.

<div>Online rumors and suppositions can ruin innocent people’s lives, causing emotional distress, loss of reputation, and significant financial damage. <div>My name is Lena Romano Wilbanks and I was born with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS) almost 40 years ago. HLHS a is very complex heart condition where you are born with no left ventricle. You only have two heart pumping chambers as opposed to four. Basically, you’re born with half of a heart. When I was born, doctors told my mother to take me home and let me die because there was nobody or hospital to help me. She never took no for an answer and eventually found a surgeon that was willing to take the risk and operate as best as he could. That man made miracles happen for so many.

<div>The HLHS community (family) is very close. We look out for each other. Now baby Elijah and his family need our help. Elijah was born with HLHS and many other complications. His wonderful mother was basically told the same thing my family was told all those years ago. His mom, Leah, refuses to give up on him. She has contacted over a dozen of the best heart surgeons in the US over the past couple of days and has repeatedly been told no. Today, she received the best news and MOTTS Children’s Hospital is giving him a chance at life! However, transferring her very sick baby across the country and being able to stay with him during this very challenging and critical time is going to be very emotionally and financially challenging for her and her family. Any prayers, donations or support would be greatly appreciated. Help her focus 100% on Elijah and not be worried about where she’s going to sleep, eat or how she is going to support her family.

My area</em> of concentration within dance pedagogy lives at the intersection of somatic practice and community engagement--fusing the study of classical ballet technique and performance with contemporary training practices while building community. Now in our second year, we are excited to bring the first inclusive performance of The Nutcracker to our region as we welcome cast members from all across the palouse.

<div>On December 1, 2022, the dancer cast in the lead roles of the nutcracker (act 1) and the cavalier (act 2) declined to uphold his commitment to see the performance through due to personal convictions regarding a beloved and cherished dance with the character of Mother Ginger (played by a beloved local, well respected drag queen) who was invited to our cast. His feelings about how certain dancers should interact in the movement onstage differed significantly from our own and after lengthy discourse, a resolution that met MMAC's standards of inclusion could not be reached and he chose to leave the cast at this time 2 weeks before the performance.

My ability to care for myself is completely diminished. I can no longer get on the toilet easily (and so I don’t) or get into the bathtub without getting stuck (and so, again, I don’t).

<div>Ian works with me in my tattoo shop. Katie, and the kiddos are certainly a big part of the Moscow Tattoo Company family. Life has been extremely tough over the past couple years for them fighting through severe health problems and Katie’s fight with breast cancer. Katie had fought long and hard to finally beat breast cancer last year. Katie passed yesterday due to major health problems she was fighting against prior to her cancer diagnosis.

<div>With all of this going on through this Covid pandemic Ian was rarely able to work, needing to focus on helping Katie and the kids with their day to day routines and keeping Covid out of the house which would further endanger Katie’s severely compromised immune system.

<div>Now with the loss of Katie the family needsto be able to grieve without the stress of final expenses and funds to make it through the day to day of this extremely hard time.

Ripley families tragic loss of Mom and Wife Katie

<div>MELA restaurant owners and long-time Pullman community members, Shaheen and Enam Khan, were given a short vacancy notice by their landlords. The news was devastating to this family whose livelihood depends on the restaurant they have worked tirelessly to build over the last 7 years--3 of those years in their current Moscow, Idaho location.

<div>While Shaheen and Enam were trying to negotiate to stay a few more months, they are now in the position of having to close December 19, and vacate by December 31. They made improvements to their current location by taking out a Small Business Loan, $13,700 of which they are still paying off. Closing on such sort notice has put them in a very precarious financial situation.

<div>The story of <strong>the Ojeda family's journey</strong> is one of countless trials and unrelenting faith. In May of 2020, they lost their son John Aaron Ojeda by miscarriage. Still processing their grief and healing, shortly after Becky was diagnosed with breast cancer.

<div>Becky has had two surgeries to rid her body of cancer. In the first one, she had what is called a lumpectomy. She had one lymph node removed to test for cancer. That lymph node had a 2cm tumor inside and something called Extra Nodal Extension (ENE) which meant that cancer was coming outside of the lymph node capsule. They needed to do a second surgery and remove 16 more lymph nodes. Those next 16 were negative for cancer.

<div><strong>The doctors are recommending that Becky do chemotherapy</strong> to clean up any microscopic cancer cells that may have traveled into the bloodstream from that first lymph node.

<div><strong>Chemotherapy alters the body's reproductive functions.</strong> After the loss of their second child, John Aaron, last year, having more children is very important to them. They have the opportunity to preserve some of Becky's eggs before starting chemo, in hopes of having a pregnancy down the road. It is a very expensive procedure and is unfortunately not covered by insurance. <strong>Total cost for egg freezing is around $10,000. </strong>Thankfully, they were able to get a grant from a non-profit, and it covered around $3,000 (which is wonderful!) However, that still leaves their <strong>out of pocket total around $7,000</strong>. Joe and Becky deliberated and prayed about this for a very long time and decided to just take the leap and go for it. We have created this GoFundMe in hopes that if anyone feels the desire to help cover some of the cost, they can do that here. All of you have helped SO much, Becky and Joe have been humbled beyond belief.

Egg Freezing for Becky Ojeda

<p><br />On Aug 30 the fire on Moscow Mountain ended up claiming the home of the Garfields. Thankfully they are okay and were able to evacuate before anyone was hurt. However all their possessions were taken by the fire and they are left with only the clothes on their backs. Money raised thru this GoFundMe account will be able to help them start over and purchase the basic necessities they need. Lets help them rebuild their lives and get back on their feet. They will be needing furniture, clothes, and basic household items to a roof over their head and so much more as everything they have has burned to the ground.

<p>On June 11, 2021, my friend and fellow admissions professional, Javier Valero woke up excited to meet and help students on the University of Idaho campus. During a busy day of guiding students around campus, Javier suffered a pulmonary embolism that resulted in his immediate hospitalization and several emergency surgeries that ultimately saved his life. It has been a long road for Javier and his recovery is still being taken on a day by day basis. Javier is young at 25 years-old, recently engaged and abundantly positive even against the difficult and frightening adversities he has faced in the last couple of months. We are asking for anyone who has the means to help support Javier in his time of need to help balance the financial weight of his hospitalization. Javier has many goals set for himself, such as planning a beautiful wedding with his partner and buying a house which have all diminished from his financial capabilities, as well as daily costs that have become impossibly difficult to carry with his emergency room/hospital bills, doctor visits, and his new routine towards recovery. While we cannot remove this health burden from Javier’s experience, we can help to lighten the financial burden that he has been fixed with so abruptly. <p>Hey! My name is Rob and I’m a friend of <strong>Anthony Saia</strong>. We first met about 10 years ago when he was the Music Director at <strong>KUOI 89.3 FM </strong>at the University of Idaho. I was one of his many college radio promo reps, working  at The Syndicate, where Kodi, Bram, myself, and others over the years would send him music for his beloved station. Between 2008 and 2018, Anthony has held virtually every position possible at KUOI – his passion for radio is so true and pure. <span>He’s one of the kindest folks I’ve ever known. A massive lover of music, an incredibly gifted artist, and a dude blessed with an absolutely beautiful soul.</span>

<p>Some years back, Anthony once shared with me a wise observation, passed down from his grandmother, that “God doesn’t give us any more than we can carry.” It’s a testament to his kind-hearted nature that we’ve all experienced.

<p>This Spring, our good bud Anthony revealed that he was recently diagnosed with <b>Acute Myeloid Leukemia</b> (Blood Cancer), and was beginning immediate treatment. <span>Thankfully, Anthony has health insurance through the state and his doctor is in-network. However, insurance will only cover so much, and the looming financial burden of mounting medical bills is something nobody in his condition should have to shoulder alone. </span>

Help Anthony Saia Crush Leukemia

If you know my brother you know that he’s funny, kind, caring, hard working, and incredibly stubborn.<br /><br />Earlier this year, Josh (who was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at 15) came down with Covid and as a result is struggling with worsened diabetic retinopathy in both eyes. The retinopathy is threatening the vision in his right eye and so he has a vitrectomy scheduled for June 28th in addition to the laser therapy he’s already been receiving. A second, follow up surgery is required in three or so months as well. <br /><br />A vitrectomy “is a type of eye surgery to treat various problems with the retina and vitreous. During the surgery, your surgeon removes the vitreous and replaces it with another solution. The vitreous is a gel-like substance that fills the middle portion of your eye.”<br /><br />Josh is temporarily unemployed and recovery could take up to four weeks so we’d like to make sure that he’s taken care of during his recovery.<br /><br />If you could please help by donating or sharing, I’d really really appreciate it. He means everything to me and I just want to make sure he’s okay and doesn’t have to stress while he recovers and looks for more work. Thank you so so much!

Josh’s Eye Surgery and Recovery

A few days ago I was involved in a head on crash, The person responsible ran a red light ran into me and fled the scene on foot. I have been in the hospital with a brain bleed, fractured skull, fractured wrist, and cuts and burns from the air bags and nerve damage in my neck and back. I recently got hired at a new job but due of the accident I missed my start date and will no longer be working there. I also lost my only transportation to do my side job which is door dash. I am asking for any help to hold me over until I can fully recover and get back to work. I am a single mom of 2 kids who need mommy to get better. I understand we are in a pandemic so anything will help. I truly thank you guys from the bottom of my heart ♥️

Single mother needs help after hit and run

To all family and friends:<br /><br />Saturday 9/12 at 2am started a life altering change we did not see coming. And are still battling it!!<br />Cherilyn (my mom) started not being herself. My Dad, brother, and I were worried. We called her PCP, went to Everett Clinic and then the ER by Sunday 9pm. <br /><br />Cherilyn has a mass growing on her brain. It starts on the right and cross over to the left. <br /><br />I’m not going to go into anymore details or theories.<br /><br />Immediate family knows the details and specifics.<br /><br />She is currently still in the hospital. My dad is by her side. Because of Covid, no visitors and He can not leave (which he doesn’t want to anyways). <br /><br />She has a long road ahead of her. <br /><br />She does not have her phone or and social media.<br /><br />Unfortunately, even if she did.. she wouldn’t remember ☹️☹️☹️.<br /><br />Prayers for her and the family are greatly appreciated.<br /><br />Thank you all!! ❤️❤️❤️<br /><br />-Destinee Williams and Family
