Help Support Helena

We’re raising funds for our dear friend and Bloomingdale community member, Helena, who has been facing an incredibly difficult financial season.

As an only child with no other family, Helena has devoted herself to caring for her mom Sharon, who raised Helena as a single parent and now has Lewy body dementia. Her mom’s health has steadily worsened over the past decade, and Helena has done her best to find housing and affordable medical treatment for her mom while keeping up with her own expenses.

Recently, Helena lost her job, and her car was totaled, which makes it difficult to get to the several odd jobs she is now working to make ends meet. Then devastatingly, her mom was targeted by a scammer and lost $15,000—money their family could not afford to lose.

Throughout all this, Helena has given so much of herself to her community. She’s organized the Crispus Attucks Park Day fundraiser for years and overseen the movie nights in the park as the board’s president. She is also very involved in her yoga community at Yoga District.

After years of caregiving, community building, and working multiple jobs to support herself and her mom, Helena could really use some support herself. Donations will help with transportation, caregiving, household expenses, and the financial strain this unexpected loss has created.

Any amount helps, and sharing this fundraiser is just as meaningful. Thank you for helping us support someone who has spent so much time caring for others. ❤️

Help keep AI out of your newsrooms

Among the hundreds of journalists laid off by The Washington Post on Feb. 4, 2026, are dozens of international employees who were essential to our coverage of global events. These are correspondents and editors hired out of subsidiaries outside the U.S., as well as local employees – researchers, translators, office managers and drivers – in places from Cairo to Mexico City.

These workers are not eligible for protection under the Washington Post Guild and are, in many instances, being laid off with less favorable terms while also facing immense logistical challenges and, in certain cases, serious security risks. Please help us support this deeply courageous team of people.

This GoFundMe is being overseen by Michelle Lee, Rebecca Tan, and other Washington Post reporters, and 100 percent of the funds will be disbursed to laid-off international employees not covered by the Guild via Venmo, Zelle, Western Union and bank transfers in the coming weeks. Funds will support staff facing sudden loss of housing, visas, and benefits. Donations will help cover rent, legal guidance, relocation to a new or safer country, storage for belongings left behind, and other urgent transition needs.

Here at the Mount Pleasant Children's Puppet Hour we *love* putting on the lantern walk! It takes a lot of work and a lot of creativity from a whole lot of wonderful people to make it happen. We're all volunteers and give our time and effort for free.

However, we spend a lot of money every year on supplies and equipment. We pay for these things ourselves, which is fine, but... it would be great if you can spare $10 or so to help pay for the walk. This will also give us more flexibility to make bigger projects, which will make the walk even more awesome!

In any case, thank you for joining us on the walk and bringing *your* light!

The 2025 Mount Pleasant Lantern Walk

Our long-time friend, neighbor, and housekeeper Sonia Dopico has lived in Mount Pleasant since 1967. For decades she built her community and her home from her small apartment on Newton Street. That is, until January 25th 2025, when a fire broke out in her building.

Thankfully, Sonia was visiting family in El Salvador when the fire occurred, but when she returned home she found herself homeless at age 74. And due to extensive smoke and water damage, she lost all of her personal possessions.

Our fundraising goal is $5,000 so that Sonia can pay for a security deposit and replace all the household items and clothing she lost. No donation is too small. Even $5 or $10 dollars gets Sonia a little bit closer affording the safety and security she needs to rebuild her life.

Sonia is also looking for opportunities to support herself, so another way you can make a huge difference in her life is by recommending her for regular pet sitting gigs. She is an experienced pet sitter, and loves cats and dogs. Please use the contact button on this page to reach out to us so we can pass along the information to Sonia!

Sonia has a generous heart and is always helping others. She regularly volunteers at her church, the Shrine of the Sacred Heart. She’s also a wonderful cook and loves animals. You may have seen Sonia working from time to time at El West or taking care of your neighbor’s pets when they are out of town. Your donation will help make sure that Sonia can find an apartment, hopefully in her beloved Mt. Pleasant community.

Sincerely, Claudia Schlosberg, Wayne Kahn, and Rebekah Barlas

Help Sonia Rebuild After Devastating Fire

We are Sarah and Emma, currently raising funds for one of our favorite people (and yours), Kirya Traber who just experienced an unprecedented medical emergency.

What's happening:

Kirya has spent the last couple of months in and out of the hospital fighting an aggressive infection that her doctors don’t know how she contracted. On Feb. 12th, Kirya went to the ER with what she thought was a stomach flu. She’s since undergone 5 surgeries and in-patient rehab, where she had to re-learn how to walk. Two months later, she's still fighting this infection. Her life is irrevocably changed.

As a freelance worker she’s lost a large amount of her income for the year while hospitalized. She now has massive medical bills piling up as well. Her recovery journey is now just beginning and she needs your help.

We’re fundraising for:

2-6 months of living expenses (It’s unclear when Kirya will be able to work again)

Medical bills from the hospital stay

Physical therapy

Other ongoing medical treatments

More about Kirya (if you don’t know her!)

Kirya Traber is a Black queer femme artist and cultural worker based in Brooklyn. She’s a nationally awarded writer and performer, and is currently trying to make her podcast addiction into an audio career.
UPDATE AS OF 12/10 ---

Dear supporters,

After a last minute legal update, Best World has received a stay of eviction! Despite this change, the store’s rent and legal challenges persist and the future is uncertain. Given the last minute nature of the legal decision, the Best World staff may need time to digest the news before making further decisions. For now, given the uncertainty, the fundraiser is still open and accepting donations. Please be assured that organizers are staying in communication with Best World owners and staff on their evolving situation and will update this GoFundMe accordingly if anything significant changes with the store’s closure timeline. A sincere thank you to everyone who has so far contributed to this fund - the Best World staff are very heartened and appreciative of the outpouring of community support.

ORIGINAL DETAILS ---

On Nov 23rd, BestWorld owners sadly let employees know they would be closing their doors on December 11th after a 27% rent increase from the landlords. With little notice, these 8 community members will be out of a job, after many have worked for BestWorld for more than a decade.

The Mt. Pleasant community is coming together with a fundraising goal of $40,000, which would help all the BestWorld staff pay their bills for at least a month while they look for new jobs and support BestWorld owners as they look for a new space after being part of our community for over two decades.

BestWorld has been serving the Mount Pleasant community for two decades. Now it's our turn to return the favor: Can you contribute a $25 donation to support our BestWorld neighbors through this transition?

Support BestWorld Staff and Owners After Rent Increase

Christa Bauer Gilley’s death on Oct. 8th, 2024, has been an unbelievable tragedy for everyone in her community.

The circumstances have been nothing short of gut-wrenching. Christa was nine weeks pregnant. Her husband has been charged with capital murder, accused of killing her and her unborn child. But the loss for everyone who knew and loved her is more than the nightmarish details of her death.

Christa, at her core, was a caregiver. It was no surprise that she went into the healthcare field, excelled as a physical therapist and then as a professor. She was compassionate with patients, considerate with students, and kind hearted with colleagues. She brought life to nearly any social situation. And joy to those who knew her from all stages of her life.

Christa was a devoted daughter. The epitome of a protective big sister. And a generous, nurturing friend. Most importantly, to Christa, she was a mother – the embodiment of selfless care – to her two surviving children. They will turn two and four in the coming months, without the mom who’d already planned their birthday celebrations.

For all of us lucky enough to receive that special care from Christa – in small doses and large; over decades or days – we have the opportunity to pay it forward, and help those who are a living part of her and her legacy. For those that never had the privilege of meeting her but are inspired by her story, we welcome you, as she would undoubtedly have done, too.

During this incredibly difficult time, Christa’s family needs our help. Please consider a donation to support her family and mitigate the burden of legal, court and travel costs, so they can focus on surrounding her children with love and stability in this devastating time. Your help will also go towards childcare, food and housing expenses that will allow them to concentrate on Christa’s babies, and not the financial stress of this heart-wrenching loss.

Together, we’ll keep her caring, beautiful spirit alive.

*In an effort to make things as easy as possible for the Bauer's, this will be the one and only GoFundMe account. Any other accounts that may be started are not guaranteed to be legitimate fundraising sources.

This fundraiser is being organized by Liza McGilvery, a friend of Christa's, on behalf of Christa's family. All funds will be managed by Chris Bauer (Christa's dad).

BloomBars has been a community institution for Columbia Heights, Washington, DC, and beyond for the last 15 years. Whether it's giving artists and creatives a platform to grow and share their gifts, providing children and families with early-childhood-development programs, or community members with a safe, alcohol-free space to connect across our many divides, BloomBars has been a constant.

As you may have noticed on our socials, we’ve opened our doors again and have been building steam toward our rebirth these last few months. From BloomBars Day at the National Cherry Blossom Festival to Columbia Heights Day to monthly family entertainment night at the Columbia Heights Rec. Center, to special events, to the gradual return of regular programs like weekly Samba classes for kids and adults, yoga, and monthly Harambee with Baba Ras D, and of course, our reBloom Donation marketplace (please and thank you to those who donated items or plan to). And there’s more in store, but we're far from being out of the woods. The first step has been to reimagine ourselves in this new paradigm and how that translates into our sustainability. Shout out to District Bridges for helping us develop that plan. But for us to continue to move forward, we need a BIG infusion of your support to cover things like property taxes if we are to keep our doors open. In these challenging times, our mission is more relevant now than ever. Please donate NOW, spread the word, and keep BloomBars blooming!

BLOOMBARS: Help A Community Treasure Stay Open

Hello, amazing community!

We are reaching out to you on behalf of Inga, a remarkable 24-year-old college student who, despite facing incredible challenges, has demonstrated unparalleled resilience and determination throughout her life. Born without arms, Inga has navigated the complexities of academia with unwavering courage, proving that the human spirit can triumph over adversity.

Now, Inga faces a new and unexpected challenge—she has recently been diagnosed with breast cancer. This diagnosis has added an immense emotional and financial burden to her already demanding journey. Inga is not one to ask for help, but she needs our support now more than ever.

As a college student, Inga has been dedicated to her education, aspiring to build a future that transcends societal expectations and stereotypes. Despite the obstacles she encounters daily as a person without arms, she has approached life with an inspiring attitude and an unyielding commitment to her goals.

Cancer doesn't discriminate, and Inga's journey with it has been an uphill battle. Medical expenses, treatments, and the day-to-day costs of living have created an overwhelming financial strain. This is where we, as a caring community, can make a difference.

Our goal is to raise $20,000 to help Inga cover her medical bills, treatments, and living expenses during this challenging time. Every contribution, no matter how small, will contribute to easing the burden on Inga's shoulders and allowing her to focus on her health and well-being.

Let's come together to show Inga that she is not alone in this fight. Your support can make a tangible difference in her life, and every donation is a step toward a brighter, healthier future for this incredible young woman.

Please consider contributing to Inga's GoFundMe campaign, and share this post with your friends, family, and social networks. Let's unite to empower hope, strength, and resilience in the face of adversity.

Thank you for being a beacon of support in Inga's journey. Together, we can make a profound impact on her life and inspire others to believe in the power of compassion and community.

Inga's Fight Against Breast Cancer

Update 3/13/2024:

Cai’s health has improved a lot since his main stay in the hospital. He has gained a healthy amount of weight and his sleep apnea is nearly gone outside of the random central signal loss. He also just reached his 3rd birthday on 2/20!

I am still trying to reach our goal in order to secure more financial stability as we still do not have home nursing. I have been working to get a special needs bed for him and some other equipment so that a night nurse can comfortably come in to care for him at bedtime. We are having some setbacks as far as insurance approval because he needs a recommendation from a speech therapist. I have already scheduled but the appointment isnt until September so I am looking for s more affordable sleep situation for him.

Unfortunately, because of my lack of knowledge surrounding some of the assistance we receive due to his disability, Cai’s SSI payments are going to be garnished until what they deem we were overpaid is returned. After a review, I was told that because Cai’s hospital stay was more than 30 days, he was ineligible to receive the payments because medicaid covered more than 50% of his stay and bills. This means that currently our main/most stable source of income is being cut significantly until the overpayment is paid back. He was only due $30/mo for the 4 months he spent in the hospital. The garnishment begins in April.

We truly appreciate all of the help and support both financial and mental from our community and beyond.

Update 11/6/2023:

Cai has been out of the hospital now for one month. He’s doing so much better and has been enjoying his freedom 100%. Thank you to everyone that helped us out and those that are still sharing and donating as we continue this journey toward his health stability and home stability too. My baby is blessed to have this community.

We are still getting settled into our new place as far as furniture and necessities but he is in a safe, healthy new home and thats what matters.

Update 9/28/2023:

I was able to secure a place that is healthy and safe for Cais medical need’s with enough space foe his equipment. Now we are trying to gather the funds for the move in costs which is essentially $2000. Deposit, prorated rent, utility deposit and renters insurance. The unit is ready for move in now. I truly appreciate all of the donations and help we have gotten thus far and look forward to sharing the news that we are finally settled in a new space to begin his long term care plan. Unfortunately Cai is currently back in the hospital battling RSV and infection of his trach and gtube.

My youngest son Cai has Trisomy 21 (Down syndrome) and was born with two holes in his heart. Since birth, Cai has been hospitalized more often than he has been home. As his mom, being his full-time caregiver is not easy and has truly taken a toll on household finances, making it hard to secure housing because there aren’t any options with an open landlord debt, even for HUD or Section 8.

This fund will go towards:

Paying off the remaining eviction balance

Move-in costs

A few month's rent (until we can hire in-home nursing)

Recurring hospital expenses (in the event Cai ends up back in the hospital)

As most of you know these past few years have been a lot for my family. During COVID, I found out I was pregnant and that baby Cai would have Trisomy 21 (Down syndrome) and a hole in his heart. Unfortunately due to being extremely sick during my pregnancy and unable to work, we lost our housing, resulting in an eviction that has yet to be paid in full. After giving birth they determined that Cai had two holes that needed repair. At 6 months old they considered him to be a failure to thrive as he was not gaining weight due to his heart working too hard to support his body. At 8 months we had an emergency that landed him in the hospital for months before having his heart repaired in January 2022. He did well for a month or so, until we noticed he started having trouble breathing in his sleep.

In August of 2022, he started showing signs of having severe sleep apnea and was constantly catching colds that landed him in the hospital for days, then weeks, and now months. Unfortunately as we waited for the sleep study, his apnea went undiagnosed and untreated which resulted in his breathing getting progressively worse. In February 2023 he got surgery on his airways that they thought would help with his breathing before we could get an official sleep study, it did not help at all. We finally were able to push forward his study to July 2023 and the sleep doctor determined that he failed his sleep study and required too much assistance breathing on his own. A couple of weeks later he had a tracheostomy to bypass his obstructive apnea in hopes of giving him a better quality of life. During his feeding therapies since, we found out he has been aspirating which was causing him to get infections in his lungs. Now he has a g-tube tube to assist with feeding as he cannot safely eat on his own.

Cai is not healthy enough to go to a medical daycare at this time and to hire in-home nursing help, his medical insurance would need to be changed which will set his care back as his specialists will be out of network; requiring long wait times as a new patient. In addition to navigating his disability, our housing is consistently unstable; I've received the help of multiple social workers in the hospital, and have exhausted all local and state resources for housing assistance.

There are no answers or timelines to tell when he will get better or be able to have more freedoms where he doesn’t need around-the-clock care or monitoring. But the hope is that one day he will be able to have a break from his health issues so that he can truly enjoy his childhood and be a kid. We truly appreciate everyone that has supported baby Cai over these past 2 years. Thank you in advance for your consideration and support for our family.

My name is Charise Graves, granddaughter to Mrs. Josephine Wright, and I am reaching out to you today because my 93-year-old grandmother, a resident of Hilton Head Island, SC for over 30 years, is in desperate need of your help. Bailey Point Investment, a greedy land development company, is trying to take her property away from her as her land is situated right in the middle of their new residential subdivision, currently under construction. This land has been in our family since the end of the Civil War and she has poured her heart and soul into maintaining the property for herself and her family to enjoy for generations to come.

Unfortunately, Bailey Point Investment is trying to force her off the land so they can develop it for their profit. The harassment this poor woman has endured and is still suffering at the hands of this unscrupulous company is unimaginable. She's being unfoundedly sued by Bailey Point for encroachment. They claim her back porch, (still standing), and shed, (which was removed for over $2,000), are encroaching on to their new property. In their lawsuit, they are also making claims that she is not the legal heir to her property which she has lived and paid taxes on for over 30 years.

We are hoping to raise enough funds to cover the cost of her attorneys, cover any property taxes, and construct a fence to create a barrier between Grandma's property and the new development which has recently paved a road 22ft from her back porch. An area that was once acres of untouched forest, swampland, and refuge to Hilton Head's diverse wildlife.

On May 5th, 1991, people took to the streets of Washington D.C.’s Mount Pleasant neighborhood to protest the police shooting of Daniel Gomez, a young man from El Salvador. Through testimony, song, poetry, and street theatre, La Manplesa: An Uprising Remembered weaves together the collective memory of one of D.C.’s first barrios, dives into the roots of the ‘91 rebellion, and explores the ways that activism of the past informs and inspires present social movements. As people across the world take to the streets to demand an end to police brutality and systemic racism, the film explores how artists prompt us to question: how much has really changed for the people whom our systems were built to oppress?

After two years of working on this feature documentary through volunteer efforts and a production grant from the Humanities Council of Washington D.C. , we need your support to help us get over the finish line. We need to raise $30,000 so that we can begin to share this pivotal chapter in the history of Washington D.C.’s Latinx community. We are anchored in two main goals:

(1) Honoring the history of Mount Pleasant, through recognizing the contributions of the Latinx community in shaping the ground on which we walk on today.

(2) Sharing this story with current residents and with the larger Washington, D.C. community to foster reflection, education and change.

All donations are tax-deductible.
We are offering perks for certain donation amounts—more information below!
Please email [email redacted] [dot] com to claim your perk.

• $5,000 for archival licensing
• $5,000 for color correction
• $2,000 for audio editing & mixing
• $2,500 for final editing
• $7,500 to launch an impact campaign after the film is complete
• $3,000 to pay honorarium to the artists & memory keepers

We plan to have a series of community screenings across the DMV, taking this film to churches, community centers, non-profits, universities and schools. Our hope is that audiences will be inspired to ensure that they better understand their rich, local history, and will be moved to action to maintain the foothold of Latinx residents in this unique neighborhood. We are also pushing for this history to be incorporated into school curriculums and the DC Public Library. We’re excited and look forward to collaborating with local community leaders and partners to find ways to accomplish these goals.

May 2021 marks the 30th anniversary of the 1991 Mount Pleasant uprisings. Against the backdrop of contemporary protests to end police brutality and racial injustice, it is critical to honor the stories of those that have come before us, as we work from our places of influence to mobilize change.

The Mount Pleasant uprising created real and substantive change for the residents of the community — from the formation of the Latino Civil Rights Task Force and the Latino Economic Development Center to the immense growth of the Latin American Youth Center. Yet despite these advances, many of the injustices that sparked the uprising still persist to this day.

Our history informs our daily lives, our interactions as community members, the homes we live in, and the very topography that we traverse. In a city whose “official” history has been dominated by white storytellers who centered the experiences of people like themselves, La Manplesa tells a different story, from the perspective of Latinx artists and community members who shared their voices, fought for change, and continue to do so today.

There’s a poem I wrote called Barrio that goes something like this, “Trying to write things about this place, about this time, about this air that hangs around, chewing gum blowing bubbles, trying to write about things that do not belong in poems… Trying to put it down, to say it right. It’s difficult. Very difficult.” Depending on what generation you were from, Mount Pleasant has different meanings. When I left home at 17, I lived in a group house on Hobart street, and then I got my first apartment on Lanier. It’s all an accumulation of memories, but some things get lost. This film matters because it brings together a lot of our lived experiences. In those black and white pictures of Rick Reinhard’s, you actually see all our stories coming together. As we fought, some evolution happened, but not a lot has changed. As we were living this, we didn’t have a handle on the history that we were making, on the history we were repeating. Some of us will go to our grave without finishing that task of understanding how all these things fit together into the bigger history of the United States. This film is part of that journey of understanding.

— Quique Avilés, Producer

Mount Pleasant is a neighborhood whose community members, block parties, alley jams, and porch culture raised me. I was nine years old when Daniel Gomez was shot. I remember walking the block up to Mt. Pleasant Street, the gathering crowd, too many police, the ambulance taking him away. No one explained to me what was happening. But I remember witnessing the pain in my neighbor’s faces, the pit in my young belly, and a deep feeling we all shared in that moment that an injustice had transpired. The next day, I remember the stomping boots of riot police, my eyes burning while running to the roof with my older brother, watching tear gas rise into the air, our faces pushed into wet towels to calm the sting. Those three days marked the beginning of my understanding of the racial injustice and oppression in the city I have called home my whole life.

La Manplesa is made in collaboration with the activists and artists in the community. I hope this film is a small contribution to honor this history, to recognize the everyday revolutionaries who took to the streets and used their voice and creativity to fight for justice.

— Ellie Walton, Director/DP
_________________________________________________________________________________________

Sea parte de honrar la historia de La Manplesa.
Be a part of honoring the history of Mount Pleasant.

Visit our website for more information! La Manplesa: An Uprising Remembered

On August 23rd my son was shot multiple times in the back by a Kenosha Police Department officer, after my son broke up an altercation by an unrelated party. The shooting has now left my son critically injured as he fights for his life. The extent of my son’s injuries is unknown, but we remain prayerful as he continues to undergo multiple rounds of operations to save his life. This fund is established to cover my son’s medical expenses, mental and grief counseling for our family and to assist our family in the days to come, as we continue to seek justice for Jacob. A portion of these proceeds will also be used to benefit my son’s 6 children, some of whom witnessed this horrific act of violence. Justice for Jacob Blake

Antonio Caruso Jr. died April 30th, 2020 after a long battle with cancer.

Tony loved – and was loved – widely and well. He taught passionately and changed lives. He gave his time, his attention and his gifts freely and fully. He was a rare and spectacular human being, and it’s impossible to do his life justice with words.

But words were one of Tony’s greatest passions, so we must at least try…

Adoring husband (Daniele), devoted father (Rocco) and dedicated dog-dad (Frazier and Leo)

Cherished son (Antonio Sr. and Rose) and beloved brother (Maria, Joanne and Laura)

Deeply invested teacher, highly respected colleague, generous mentor

Loyal, ride-or-die friend

Laugher, learner, listener

Lover of the written word (Salinger)…

               …and music (Springsteen)…

                             …and motorcycles (Harley)

Giver of gifts and planner of surprises

Reader, writer, teller of stories

Jeep driver, deep diver

Educator, phony-hater

Truth teller, ‘Burgh dweller

Turner of pages, man for the ages

The greatest loves of Tony’s extraordinary life were his family, and education. You can honor Tony – and support these great loves – by contributing to a college fund for his son, Rocco. Hidden Figures Private Screening

Exactly one month ago, Lauren and Matt got married under a canopy of redwood trees. This morning, the newlyweds awoke to a fire tearing through their home. Both escaped unharmed, but their house has been damaged beyond repair, and most of their posessions--including all of their wedding presents--were lost to the flames.

Now they not only need a new place to live, but they also need to rebuild their lives from almost scratch. They're supposed to head south on their honeymoon in just a few short weeks, and this heartbreaking event has cast a shadow of stress and anxiety over what should be the happiest time of their lives.

I thought I would try and make it a little easier on them by starting this page. Every dollar donated will go to Lauren and Matt as they try and sort out this mess and replace the things they lost. They're the sweetest, most kind and wonderfully generous couple I know. If you have any thing to spare, whether it's money or just positive thoughts, please send it their way.

Thank you in advance for anything you can give. <3
