The 2025 Mount Pleasant Lantern Walk

<div>Our long-time friend, neighbor, and housekeeper Sonia Dopico has lived in Mount Pleasant since 1967. For decades she built her community and her home from her small apartment on Newton Street. That is, until January 25th 2025, when a fire broke out in her building.

<div>Thankfully, Sonia was visiting family in El Salvador when the fire occurred, but when she returned home she found herself homeless at age 74. And due to extensive smoke and water damage, she lost all of her personal possessions. 

</div>

<div>Our fundraising goal is $5,000 so that Sonia can pay for a security deposit and replace all the household items and clothing she lost. No donation is too small. Even $5 or $10 dollars gets Sonia a little bit closer affording the safety and security she needs to rebuild her life.

<div>Kirya has spent the last couple of months in and out of the hospital fighting an aggressive infection that her doctors don’t know how she contracted. On Feb. 12th, Kirya went to the ER with what she thought was a stomach flu. She’s since undergone 5 surgeries and in-patient rehab, where she had to re-learn how to walk. Two months later, she's still fighting this infection. Her life is irrevocably changed.

Inga's Fight Against Breast Cancer

<div>Cai’s health has improved a lot since his main stay in the hospital. He has gained a healthy amount of weight and his sleep apnea is nearly gone outside of the random central signal loss. He also just reached his 3rd birthday on 2/20!

<div>I am still trying to reach our goal in order to secure more financial stability as we still do not have home nursing. I have been working to get a special needs bed for him and some other equipment so that a night nurse can comfortably come in to care for him at bedtime. We are having some setbacks as far as insurance approval because he needs a recommendation from a speech therapist. I have already scheduled but the appointment isnt until September so I am looking for s more affordable sleep situation for him. 
</div>

<div>Unfortunately, because of my lack of knowledge surrounding some of the assistance we receive due to his disability, Cai’s SSI payments are going to be garnished until what they deem we were overpaid is returned. After a review<span>, I was told that because Cai’s hospital stay was more than 30 days, he was ineligible to receive the payments because medicaid covered more than 50% of his stay and bills. This means that currently our main/most stable source of income is being cut significantly until the overpayment is paid back. He was only due $30/mo for the 4 months he spent in the hospital. The garnishment begins in April. </span>

Now we are trying to gather the funds for the move in costs which is essentially $2000. Deposit, prorated rent, utility deposit and renters insurance. The unit is ready for move in now. I truly appreciate all of the donations and help we have gotten thus far and look forward to sharing the news that we are finally settled in a new space to begin his long term care plan. Unfortunately Cai is currently back in the hospital battling RSV and infection of his trach and gtube.

<div>My youngest son Cai has Trisomy 21 (Down syndrome) and was born with two holes in his heart. Since birth, Cai has been hospitalized more often than he has been home. As his mom, being his full-time caregiver is not easy and has truly taken a toll on household finances, making it hard to secure housing because there aren’t any options with an open landlord debt, even for HUD or Section 8.

<div>As most of you know these past few years have been a lot for my family. During COVID, I found out I was pregnant and that baby Cai would have Trisomy 21 (Down syndrome) and a hole in his heart. Unfortunately due to being extremely sick during my pregnancy and unable to work, we lost our housing, resulting in an eviction that has yet to be paid in full. After giving birth they determined that Cai had two holes that needed repair. At 6 months old they considered him to be a failure to thrive as he was not gaining weight due to his heart working too hard to support his body. At 8 months we had an emergency that landed him in the hospital for months before having his heart repaired in January 2022. He did well for a month or so, until we noticed he started having trouble breathing in his sleep.

<div>In August of 2022, he started showing signs of having severe sleep apnea and was constantly catching colds that landed him in the hospital for days, then weeks, and now months. Unfortunately as we waited for the sleep study, his apnea went undiagnosed and untreated which resulted in his breathing getting progressively worse. In February 2023 he got surgery on his airways that they thought would help with his breathing before we could get an official sleep study, it did not help at all. We finally were able to push forward his study to July 2023 and the sleep doctor determined that he failed his sleep study and required too much assistance breathing on his own. A couple of weeks later he had a tracheostomy to bypass his obstructive apnea in hopes of giving him a better quality of life. During his feeding therapies since, we found out he has been aspirating which was causing him to get infections in his lungs. Now he has a g-tube tube to assist with feeding as he cannot safely eat on his own.

<div>Cai is not healthy enough to go to a medical daycare at this time and to hire in-home nursing help, his medical insurance would need to be changed which will set his care back as his specialists will be out of network; requiring long wait times as a new patient. In addition to navigating his disability, our housing is consistently unstable; I've received the help of multiple social workers in the hospital, and have exhausted all local and state resources for housing assistance.

<div>There are no answers or timelines to tell when he will get better or be able to have more freedoms where he doesn’t need around-the-clock care or monitoring. But the hope is that one day he will be able to have a break from his health issues so that he can truly enjoy his childhood and be a kid. In their lawsuit, they are also making claims that she is not the legal heir to her property which she has lived and paid taxes on for over 30 years.

On May 5th, 1991, people took to the streets of Washington D.C.’s Mount Pleasant neighborhood to protest the police shooting of Daniel Gomez, a young man from El Salvador. Through testimony, song, poetry, and street theatre, <a href="https://www.lamanplesafilm.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><em><strong>La Manplesa: An Uprising Remembered </strong></em></a>weaves together the collective memory of one of D.C.’s first <em>barrios</em>, dives into the roots of the ‘91 rebellion, and explores the ways that activism of the past informs and inspires present social movements. As people across the world take to the streets to demand an end to police brutality and systemic racism, the film explores how artists prompt us to question: <strong>how much has really changed for the people whom our systems were built to oppress?</strong><br /><br />After two years of working on this feature documentary through volunteer efforts and a production grant from the <a href="https://humanitiesdc.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Humanities Council of Washington D.C</a>. , <strong>we need your support to help us get over the finish line. We need to raise $30,000</strong> so that we can begin to share this pivotal chapter in the history of Washington D.C.’s Latinx community. It’s difficult. Very difficult.” Depending on what generation you were from, Mount Pleasant has different meanings. When I left home at 17, I lived in a group house on Hobart street, and then I got my first apartment on Lanier. It’s all an accumulation of memories, but some things get lost. This film matters because it brings together a lot of our lived experiences. In those black and white pictures of Rick Reinhard’s, you actually see all our stories coming together. As we fought, some evolution happened, but not a lot has changed. As we were living this, we didn’t have a handle on the history that we were making, on the history we were repeating. Some of us will go to our grave without finishing that task of understanding how all these things fit together into the bigger history of the United States. No one explained to me what was happening. But I remember witnessing the pain in my neighbor’s faces, the pit in my young belly, and a deep feeling we all shared in that moment that an injustice had transpired. The next day, I remember the stomping boots of riot police, my eyes burning while running to the roof with my older brother, watching tear gas rise into the air, our faces pushed into wet towels to calm the sting. <div>On August 23rd my son was shot multiple times in the back by a Kenosha Police Department officer, after my son broke up an altercation by an unrelated party. The shooting has now left my son critically injured as he fights for his life. The extent of my son’s injuries is unknown, but we remain prayerful as he continues to undergo multiple rounds of operations to save his life.This fund is established to cover my son’s medical expenses, mental and grief counseling for our family and to assist our family in the days to come, as we continue to seek justice for Jacob. We are now going to give out copies of the book Hidden Figures as part of the screening!<br /><br />Hear Me Code</strong> is raising funds to send 200 low-income childen and their families to see the movie, Hidden Figures, on January 28, 2017 and February 4, 2017.  We would like to be able to cover their admission and snacks for movie. If we raise extra funds we would like buy ticket for other young people in the DMV who cannot make it downtown.<br /><br />The screening will be held at Regal Gallery place and cost per young person is $10.14 and a kid snack pack will be $6.25. The screening will be followed by a panel of groups in DC who offer free opportunities for people to learn to code. Hidden Figures Private Screening 

Wow. This is hard.<br /><br />So my friend Sascha, if you don't know her personally, is that 31 year old, super hot, petite blonde all over my Instagram page. Sascha's a Ph.D. Candidate in American History, and a writer who covers LGBT and women's issues. Four weeks ago Sascha was in Boston interviewing Anita Hill, because Sascha is aweosme.<br /><br />Two weeks ago, Sascha discovered two large tumors (3.6 cm) in her left breast and went to see her doctor. A week later Sascha texted with the first bit of news from that visit: the tumors were most likely breast cancer. Three days ago, more daunting results as to the extent of Sascha's condition came out: her diagnosis is Invasive Ductal Carcinoma, High Grade (Aggressive), and Stage III (the cancer has spread to the lymph nodes). The duration of her treatment (chemo, surgery, radiation, and hormone therapy) is set to span over an entire year. <br /><br />Sascha needs help, and time is suddenly very much of the essence. Sascha has student health insurance, BUT  it doesn't fully cover the following: MRIs, costly medication co-pays, ER visits, ambulance bills, out-of-network specialists, or complimentary/alternative medicines like acupuncture that can help with easing some of the more daunting side effects that such extensive treatment entails. She will also be unable to work, write, or complete the last legs of her dissertation for at least six months, likely longer.<br /><br />Help right now is essential to Sascha's wellbeing over the extent of her prolonged treatment plan, and her healthy recovery. I'm asking that you help my pal Sascha because I need her to get through this and be able to move forward with life so I can continue to learn and be supported by such a dynamically talented, kind hearted and devoted friend myself. Sascha is a treasure trove and she is 31 years old, she has so much to give, and has already touched the lives of so many of us who have had the luck to have met her already - I need you to help with this because Sascha needs help and this is so important. Help Sascha with Cancer Treatment

Exactly one month ago, Lauren and Matt got married under a canopy of redwood trees. This morning, the newlyweds awoke to a fire tearing through their home. Both escaped unharmed, but their house has been damaged beyond repair, and most of their posessions--including all of their wedding presents--were lost to the flames. <br /><br />Now they not only need a new place to live, but they also need to rebuild their lives from almost scratch. They're supposed to head south on their honeymoon in just a few short weeks, and this heartbreaking event has cast a shadow of stress and anxiety over what should be the happiest time of their lives. <br /><br />I thought I would try and make it a little easier on them by starting this page.
