This was sudden—leaving his family and me in utter disbelief. John Benson touched so many with his love, patience, understanding, and compassion for those less likely to receive it. His presence brought a sense of peace and comfort, and he blessed so many with his humor, kindness, and genuine heart. The sky exploded into a million stars in celebration the day he arrived into this world. Sadly, on April 18th at 7:40 am, John passed away from a massive heart attack, leaving the physical plane to soar into the cosmos and become one with the universe.

John was Jim (Jimbo) Benson’s baby brother and best friend. He understood Jimbo and loved him dearly, and their bond was unbreakable. John also loved his friends and cared deeply about each of them. In fact, two of his friends performed CPR before the paramedics arrived, showing just how much he was surrounded by love and support in his final moments.

John was incredibly proud of his sons, Jake and Johnny—they were the light in his smile. He would light up talking about them, boasting about Jake’s musical accomplishments and Johnny’s athleticism and sense of adventure. He spoke of his sons with such pride and love, and they brought him immense joy.

A spiritual gangster, John was never judgmental and helped anyone in any way he could. His mother passed away a year and a half ago, which broke his heart—he was devoted and patient, and admired her deeply. He loved to cook, and every meal was made with love and artistry. As a professional tennis player and coach, he inspired and supported many. He lived to play African, Middle Eastern, and bongo drums, and more recently, the hand pan drum. John was a dreamer who beat to his own drum. His humor made difficult moments pass, and his thoughtfulness and patience were beyond normal capacity. He was a beautiful soul who gave so much to others.

John has lost so much, and now the cost of repairs for his home, the probate process, and other life inconveniences have put us into a difficult financial state. Neither I, his brother, nor his two sons have the means to support a funeral or celebration. He is deserving of recognized appreciation, and his sons and brother need to bring his life and name to rest in celebration for how wonderful he was. Any support to help us give John the memorial he deserves would mean the world to his family and me. Thank you for your kindness and generosity during this difficult time.

Honoring John Benson’s Life & Legacy

Friends of Tod A. Barton, I’m starting a GoFundMe to help with costs for Tod’s celebration of life party. It is a small venue with a bar. This will help stock the bar, pay for electricity, folding chairs, and flowers. Everyone involved in this party for Tod is donating their time to organize this and the venue. Any donation is greatly appreciated. Any money left over will go to Tod’s parents to help with end-of-life costs. Thank you so much.

Hi, my name is Emily and I am fundraising for my partner, Lucas Edmands, and his mom, Cathy Tschanen, that have lost their home in Ashland and all their belongings in the Almeda/Glendower Fire. They had no warning the fire was coming, because it traveled so fast due to high winds and could only evacuate with themselves and their cat, Cosmo. Lucas, who is currently fighting stage 4 cancer, and Cathy, who is a retired caregiver, do not have insurance and desperately need ANY and ALL help. They are staying with family and are safe for now, but soon they will have to find a new home and rebuild their lives. ANY donation big or small is much APPRECIATED and will help them to do so. Any funds beyond what is needed by Lucas and Cathy will be donated to other people in need in the Rogue Valley that have also lost their homes due to this fire. Thank you in advance for any donation you may make! :)

This is what's left of the house my sister lives in, owned by her friend Dave Marshall. What's happening in Southern Oregon right now is no less scary and awful than Santa Rosa and Paradise over the past couple of years in California. They got to take very little with them, and actually ended up getting evacuated twice, first from the home they live in, then from the place they first went to. Most of their friends have also lost everything. They have two cars (through the good fortune that one was in for repairs away from the fire), one computer and their phones. My sister has had several disabling conditions for decades, and is not able to work. One of the things she did manage to take with her is most of her medication, but she is tied to Oregon Medicaid. Moving back to California means months with no covered health care. Staying in Oregon means she will be forced to pay the high rents that are sure to happen in Southern Oregon, just like they did in Chico after Santa Rosa/Paradise. Either way is an expensive proposition and will not be covered by insurance. As we start to figure out what the expenses are and what Dave's insurance will cover, we will figure out a way to split the money fairly in a way that does not jeopardize her government benefits. I'm calling in every favor anyone has ever owed me, and asking for favors from some who don't know me, her or Dave. Please help her, even if it is just $5. Thank you and I will post updates as I get them from her.

On Tuesday September 8th, our brother James and his wife Lorie Williams lost their home to the devastating Southern Oregon Fire. They were able to evacuate safely with their dogs and almost all the cats. Unfortunately, they lost an entire lifetime of personal belongings and cherished memories. They fled with only the clothes they were wearing. There is nothing left of their home or possessions. 3 years ago James and Lorie lost their home due to the financial toll that came along with James medical expenses. He has been diagnosed with Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy and Ankalosing spondylitis. Treatment has been very difficult with a pacemaker, several stints and numerous heart surgeries. In fact James had another pacemaker fitted just 2 weeks ago. James and Lorie have been active and generous contributors to their community for their whole lives. James was the vibrant head chef at the iconic Omar's restaurant in Ashland. He is well known in the restaurant industry for his skill and contribution (as well as being 'Iron Chef' Oregon Winner). Lorie has also been a much valued member of the Omar's team for a generation. With hard work and perseverance they were able to gather enough money to purchase a trailer in the Bear Lake Estates (a 55 and older community). James and Lorie were beginning to look forward optimistically to the future after settling in to the park. They lovingly restored the van and enjoyed the surrounding community and lifestyle. For now, James and Lorie are staying with their oldest daughter whose house was saved. We are hoping to raise some money to enable them to rebuild their lives - to purchase some household items, furniture and clothes and get them started on rebuilding and help with some of the expenses they are going to face with starting over. Where do you begin? A bed? Sheets? Shoes and socks? The list is daunting. Recovery will take time and emotional strength. A little help to get them started would be so much appreciated. All monies donated will be paid directly into James and Lorie's bank account and spent on urgent necessities and eventually the replacement of their home. Please donate if you are able, and if you are unable, please share this page to help spread the word. We so appreciate every little bit of help and prayers. Thank you to everyone who is reaching out in this difficult time when so many people all over the country are in need. With much love and deepest gratitude, Janell, Julie, Rosemarie and Families Xxxxxx

Tony and Robin need your help. This young family which truly represents the American dream has suffered an unthinkable blow as they fell victim to the raging fires in Southern Oregon. Propelled by massive winds, the burning fires rapidly jumped the roads of their rural community and began ravaging their neighborhood with almost no notice. With little time to spare, Tony and Robin began fighting the fires while their four young children and Tony’s elderly mother and sister, who had both immigrated from Nigeria to America to live with their son and his family, hoped that God would spare their lives. As helicopter buckets of water repeatedly missed their home, the fire picked up steam and headed straight for their family – and their family business – a popular local organic wheat grass company that had just struggled through the COVID closures to finally once again begin to emerge as a local success. Unable to get help, Tony and Robin began live-streaming their plight to save their home and their family business. In the videos from that day you can see Tony valiantly fighting the fires, refusing to let all of his dreams be lost to the flames. Tony and Robin truly represent the American dream, and it was a dream they wanted to fight to save. Today they lost that fight. Tony immigrated to the United States as a teen to escape the violence in his home country of Nigeria. As a teenager in America he worked hard and ultimately earned a scholarship to college becoming the first in his family to ever attend a University. While in College he met Robin and together they would eventually return to Robin’s home of Ashland, OR to build a small business and a family together. Tony would coach local sports and work with the YMCA and Robin was the local girls volleyball coach, both committed to giving back to their community. As their family grew, they welcomed Tony’s mother and sister into their home, helping them to leave the uncertainties of life in Nigeria for the benefit of life in America. On Tuesday afternoon, September 8, they all lost everything they had built. You can see the smoldering embers where their family home once stood below. In the distance you can see the destroyed small business they spent a decade building together. The fires leveled their home and wiped out their business in a matter of minutes. All was lost. This Go Fund Me page is started to help Tony and Robin rebuild. They are committed to rebuilding but they need our help. Please help us stand together with this amazing couple as the work to pick back up their lives. All of the funds will go to help them rebuild and take care of immediate expenses while they put their lives back together. NBC News Visits with Tony & Robin to tell their story NBC Nightly News covers fire damage in Oregon and talks with Tony and Robin Local Hawaii news covers the devastation in Oregon and speaks with former UH alumni Tony Akpan who lost his home

Fire Ravaged Family Needs Our Help

Late last night, my aunt MaryLouise and Uncle Bud, got an unexpected knock on their door and were asked to evacuate immediately. The wind had turned the fires and they could now see them rage a half a block up the road. This was unexpected and they had no time to prepare. My aunt had just enough time to grab their medicines and my Uncle Bud before they had to get in their car and leave their home - their whole life - behind them. They watched their neighbor's homes burn to the ground as they drove away. We are so lucky and thankful that they were able to evacuate in time and are safe. I'm not positive they even slept last night, but they woke this morning to the devastating news that they had lost their home. This is the accumulation of their entire lives - all gone. They weren't able to grab photos, keepsakes, or anything that meant a thing to them. Aunt MaryLouise and Uncle Bud also had their daughter Vicky, living with them. So as of this morning, all 3 are without a home, clothes, a bed to call their own .. you name it, gone. We are so lucky and so thankful that they did have friends they could stay with last night. I don't even know what the right number is to ask for, in order to get them a steady leg to stand on, but we want to help. We want to get them a safe place to live and try to make a dent in getting them the things they need to survive these times. Because if times weren't crazy enough, I can't imagine losing every single thing to my name, to my families name, overnight... while also worrying about everything else that 2020 has brought about. We know there are many other families experiencing the same thing with how insane these fires are and it breaks our hearts. We appreciate every single donation, thought and prayer.

Aunt & Uncle Lose Home to Oregon Fires

I'm Kristen's sister Shannon, and I am working on helping her put her life back together after a devastating fire destroyed her home. In January she packed up her life in Portland and moved to Talent OR. Since arriving she has dealt with an international pandemic, being on paid leave from work due to said pandemic, and now a devastating fire. Kristen needs our support and reminders of how much we love her. On September 8th Kristen was evacuated out of her apartment in Talent OR. She was given 30 minutes to grab whatever she could and her roommates 3 cats. As many people know, the Alameda/Glendower fire has decimated Phoenix and Talent Oregon. Kristen's apartment has burned to the ground. At this exact moment she has the few personal items that she grabbed (like Roxy), her roommates 3 cats, a few changes of clothes and her car. We know that everything she owned in the apartment is ashes. She does have a storage unit, but no one is sure whether it survived and if it did the status of her items. If it did survive, the chance that everything is completely filled with smoke is high. At this stage I'm assuming that will be a total loss as well. She is going to need money for a temporary place to live, replacing ALL her clothes (and we know how much Kristen likes her clothes), food, a bed, computer & sheets and everything else. Once she's in a new place she will need to replace EVERYTHING - from towels to a coffee pot. Basically this is the security that will help her start to rebuild her life in the Rogue Valley. We know that $5000 won't even cover the cost to replace her clothes, but it will at least get her some warm winter clothing. We don't know what the status of her roommates renters insurance is, so we are assuming that it is not an option. We all know how proud Kristen is, and how much she has supported those around her. Accepting this is going to be really hard for her, and it's time that we wrap around her and take care of her.

Fire Relief for Kristen

For many people in Ingrid's life, this is the first you are hearing of this overwhelmingly sad news. As you can understand, since her diagnosis just a short time ago, she has been focusing on herself, her family and making it through each day so she can work her magic with 23 second graders who show up each morning in her class. We ask that people refrain from emailing and texting, as the amount is quickly becoming overwhelming and she simply can't reply to everyone. But please know, she feels your love!! If you would like to reach out to offer words of encouragement, feel free to comment on this page - she will see it! Please invite others to attend this fundraising event. We want to pack the house!!!
