For the next 12 days, she was held under inhumane conditions – inadequate food, no feminine hygiene products – until the threat of inspection caused ICE to move her to a detention center across the country and she has now been ordered to leave. B, age 19, and S, age 10, are now alone, scared that they will be forced to return to a country they barely remember and that is no longer safe for them. B works full time while S attends school, but they are struggling financially and emotionally. The family wants B and S to stay in the United States, where they will not be subject to gang threats and worse, but they need our financial support to make that possible. Rent, food, transportation, and legal fees are more than B can earn while also taking care of S and his needs. Children shouldn’t have to raise themselves alone. The stress and trauma of missing a husband and father is taking its toll. But she never came home. ICE took her without warning. We didn’t get to hug her. We didn’t get to say goodbye. Our dad, Nelson, is trying so hard to stay strong for us, but we can see how scared he is, too. From Elizabeth (19): I just turned 19, and it was the first time my mom couldn't be with me on my birthday. I'll be graduating high school in June. My mom should be celebrating with me, but instead ICE took her across the country and imprisoned her in Washington State. Now I’m trying to help my dad take care of everything at home—cooking, cleaning, taking care of my little brother—while also finishing school. It’s hard to focus on my studies. I’d been planning on going to the university this fall, but my family needs income, so I’ll be getting a job after I graduate. I miss her so much. From Jocelyn (16): I don’t understand how someone can just take your mom. I keep thinking she’ll walk through the door any minute. I’m trying to help with my little brother, but it’s really hard without her. I constantly worry about my mom, so it’s really hard to pay attention at school. From our brother, Enoc (4): Enoc keeps asking, “Where’s Mama?” He doesn’t understand why Mama doesn’t come home. There are no words to explain something like this to someone so little. He cries at night because he wants her to tuck him in. Ortiz lived in Maryland for 23 years while supporting his family building patios and retaining walls. On September 29, 2025, he was detained by ICE on his way to work. After a week in detention, he signed deportation papers. His wife Dalia* explains that he couldn’t tolerate the conditions. Those who would not sign papers were punished. Ortiz and Dalia had no money for a lawyer. *Names changed for safety Dalia is now a single mother of four children, ages 7 to 17, all American citizens. Their seven-year-old son has both Downs Syndrome and autism spectrum disorder, and has undergone three open heart surgeries. He is often sick, and gets nourishment through a feeding tube. Caring for him requires money for diapers and medical supplies, and, of course, considerable attention. Seeing his mother’s burdens, the 17-year-old has taken it upon himself to try to fill his father’s shoes. As the only one who can drive, he takes his mother and brother to doctors’ appointments. And he has taken on a part time job to help cover expenses. Your support is crucial to helping him finish high school. Dalia is a skilled seamstress with 10 years experience. She also makes children’s clothing for sale, using every scrap to create small items like coin purses and hair scrunchies. She lights up talking about her creative sewing, and is happy to provide alteration services. But she was sick in December and January and couldn’t work. Dalia needs help to cover basic expenses while she builds her business, and help with her youngest son’s care. We can provide hope and care to this family during a difficult time. Juan is a loving husband, devoted grandfather, generous community member, and longtime deacon and church leader. He has lived in Maryland for thirty years. Left behind are Juan’s wife Ana* and their 14-year-old grandson whom they have been lovingly raising in their home for many years. Juan was seized and taken from his family as he got into his car on his first day of work after three months recuperating from a life-threatening illness and surgery. In addition to his recent recovery, Juan suffers from severe chronic health problems and needs daily medications to not be hospitalized. Ana is overwhelmed with navigating the ICE maze, as Juan was moved within 72 hours from Baltimore, Maryland to Fresno, California. Juan’s family has only heard from him once due to ICE’s bureaucratic nightmare of red tape. The days are excruciatingly long as Ana is working round the clock to pick up the pieces, secure legal help, and find support to feed and shelter herself and her grandson. Ana suffered a stroke recently and is not completely recovered. Juan was her caregiver and the sole breadwinner. And he is now thousands of miles away, while his life-sustaining medication remains on the coffee table in his family’s home. Ana needs the support of caring neighbors because she is elderly and cannot work. Please contribute to Ana’s household costs and legal fees as she fights to free Juan from detention.
