For almost three decades, he has worked hard to create a stable life through his own effort and dedication. On October 5, Diego traveled out of state to Pennsylvania for work. After finishing the job, he drove back toward Maryland. He stopped at a gas station, where police approached him and asked for his driver’s license. When they learned he did not have legal documentation, they drove him about 15 minutes and handed him over to immigration officers. After a month in the horrible conditions of the Louisiana detention center, his dad was convinced to sign self deportation papers. E has been fending for himself ever since. He works full time while also working to finish senior year of high school. He used to play soccer with his father, and the pair spent all their time together. Now, E does nothing but work and go to school. He is too nervous to leave his aunt’s home, where he pays rent for his room and board. He does nothing but work and go to school, while also helping out with his young cousins. This young man misses his father terribly and feels so alone. His greatest wish is to finish school and find a way to go to college, where he wants to study business so he can one day own his own business. At school, he loves astronomy class, learning English and having time with friends. The supportive staff at Gaithersburg High School is helping him to finish classes and figure out future options. What he needs most is our community’s help to give him time to focus on school and finishing out the year–to give him the support that his parents cannot give from El Salvador. This young man is loved by his teachers, who have helped him in every way they can. Please help with financial resources to get him through high school. In mid-September, her partner Pablo*, the sole breadwinner for their young family, was arrested by ICE on his way to work. Pablo was detained in Louisiana for one month before being deported, and Jocelyn is struggling to find a way to support and care for her daughter while attending school. This young family has worked so hard to chart a path toward a bright future for their young child. Jocelyn is currently staying with extended family members, but needs help covering her portion of the rent, basic necessities for herself and her daughter, and childcare. UPDATE: The initial money needed was raised from this GoFundMe, and from a legal fund. In early September, to much joy, Rodrigo’s habeas was granted and he was released from the detention center. But the case is not done and the need continues. Although bond is sometimes set around $1,500 or $2,000, this judge set it well above $10,000. Again, the community rallied and the family was able to rely on support to get the bond paid. Yet even more money is needed. The lawyers charge $12,500 for the next phase of Rodrigo’s immigration case. Plus there are government filing fees of nearly $2,000. The list of expenses this family faces goes on. Meanwhile, they continue to need financial help with rent and utilities, car payment and insurance, food and diapers for the children, especially since Rodrigo has to attend to his legal situation as well as his job.

Rosa* left behind everything she knew to come to the United States and give her youngest daughter, Katia, a chance to survive, grow, and have a dignified life. Katia was born with severe physical and mental disabilities and needs a wheelchair, a feeding tube, and specialized medical and educational care. Here in Montgomery County, Katia is a joyful young girl who is deeply loved by her school community. She receives specialized instruction, nursing services, speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, and physical therapy, along with excellent medical care from a highly qualified team. Rosa went to her immigration court appointment but they rejected her application, and now Rosa and Katia are facing possible deportation. If they are forced to return to El Salvador, Katia would lose the essential medical and educational services that have given her a life with dignity, and Rosa is deeply afraid for her daughter’s life and well-being. Eduardo* travels for work, and was in upstate NY when he was picked up by ICE agents at the end of the summer. Since it was a break from school, his older son, was with him on the road and also detained. Eduardo's son was eventually released by the agents, and Eduardo's wife had to drive from MD to NY to pick up their son to bring him home safely. Eduardo is being detained out of state, doubling the stress on the family. Eduardo has three children, a daughter who has recently graduated from high school, his older son who went through the ordeal with him, along with another younger son. Both boys love playing soccer. A young man himself, Guillermo made sure they had a roof over their heads, food on the table, and that their needs were met. Guillermo and his family now find themselves in jeopardy. While making a delivery, Guillermo was surrounded and detained by immigration. His mother, Alma, is worried sick about her son, whether he is well, fed, or able to come home. Alma and his younger sisters are also struggling financially. Although her doctors have advised her against working, Alma has returned to work to cover daily expenses, manage her chronic illness, and pay the legal fees to bring her son home. Please help Guillermo, his mother Alma, and his younger sisters.
