 Last year, Jewell was diagnosed with Familial Adenomatous Polyposis (FAP), a rare inherited condition that causes hundreds to thousands of polyps to develop in the colon and puts her at an extremely high risk of developing colorectal cancer.

 In January, Jewell had her first colonoscopy, and we found out she had hundreds of precancerous polyps in her colon. We were told she could wait about 2-3 years for her surgery. Then, in June, we got a second opinion and Jewell had a second colonoscopy. The precancerous polyps had grown from hundreds to a couple thousand in just 5 months. This time, we were told she needed surgery within 6 months, before the polyps became cancerous.

 <strong>After meeting with her surgical team, Jewell has made the difficult but necessary decision to undergo major surgery to protect her future and give herself the best chance at a long and healthy life. On October 27th, she will undergo surgery to remove her entire colon and will begin a new chapter of life with an ileostomy bag.</strong>

 <strong>While this surgery is a necessary step in preventing cancer and protecting her health, it comes with a long recovery, emotional challenges, and lifestyle changes. It also comes with significant medical expenses. Even though Jewell has health insurance, it unfortunately does not cover a lot of her medical bills. The hospital stay, medications, supplies for her ileostomy, follow-up appointments, travel expenses, time away from work, and the unexpected costs that come with a major life change all go far beyond what insurance will cover.</strong>

Support Jewell's Life-Changing Surgery Journey

<div>Hi, my name is Catherine Schetina, and I’m organizing this fundraiser on behalf of Eva Woods. I have known Eva for more than a decade. At the beginning of the pandemic in 2020, Eva immediately realized that services for the unhoused residents of Los Angeles would suffer as resources were cut and organizations shuttered.

<div>She took matters into her own hands. We are now in our sixth year of the MacArthur Project – a mutual aid collective run entirely by volunteers. We provide more than 700 meals each week to the unhoused and housing insecure residents of MacArthur Park, Los Angeles, and over the past six years we’ve built incredibly powerful relationships within our communities. We’re there three days a week – Sunday lunch, Monday lunch, and Thursday breakfast. We also host monthly events and supply drives, distributing hygiene kits, grocery items, tents, shelter supplies, medical supplies, and so much more. We actively partner with the people we serve, and strive to bring them the items they tell us they need most.

<div>Eva’s full time job is planning, executing, and responding rapidly to the needs of our unhoused neighbors. She’s been doing it incredibly well for six years now, and is supported by a generous community on Patreon that allows this to be her full time job. But today we’re asking for more help.

<div>During our regular lunch service on Sunday 2/22, a woman came through the park with a metal pipe. Without conversation, she came up behind Eva and hit her in the jaw. Eva was taken to the hospital and had surgery the following day on her upper and lower jaw, both of which were broken. Her jaw is wired shut for the next four weeks, and then she’ll be able to get dental implants to replace the six teeth she lost.

<div>This woman, and this incident, are not representative of the culture of MacArthur Park and the community we serve there. She is not someone we’ve met in the past, and others in the park weren’t familiar with her. This was absolutely a bizarre one off, and we would truly hate for the people who rely on us, and who we have built such incredible relationships with over the past six years, to suffer as a result of this single woman’s actions. Eva is healing well and will be back in the park as soon as possible. In the meantime, we need your help.

<div>Eva was able to cover the hospital stay and surgery costs, but the projected cost of the dental implants is $30,000. She has taught me, and everyone who volunteers with us, the true definition of serving others. She is an unstoppable force of nature, but right now, she needs our help.

<div>My name is Hani Almadhoun, and my family and friends live in the North of Gaza, Palestine. Most aid is being blocked at the border, and there isn’t nearly enough to fight back the famine or save my loved ones. So we decided to do something about it.

<div>My brother, Mahmoud Almadhoun, and his friends volunteered to start a soup kitchen in Bait Lahia, to provide hot meals to friends and neighbors. They bought four large pots, purchased wood for the fire, and risked their lives to dig up potatoes. They also purchased tomato paste and cooking oil, and three hours later, 120 families had food for the day. The next day 150 starved families ate from the kitchen.

<div>Word spread rapidly, and the next day, even more neighbors arrived. Mahmoud sprang into action, venturing out to procure ingredients for a fresh meal. He returned with leafy greens, onions, and mushrooms, crafting a new dish that was as delightful as it was nourishing. The kitchen's capacity has now expanded to accommodate meals for up to 3000 people daily, and the numbers continue to grow. For many, this was their first substantial meal in days, and the departure from canned food was a welcomed change that filled hearts with gratitude.

<li>Additionally, they are located in the heart of the market, so they can easily spot any of these veggies and cooking essentials arriving at the market.

<li>They have also visited farms close to the Green Line to find veggies and have been lucky a few times. Once, they purchased overgrown zucchinis that should have been picked weeks ago.

<li>Mom and my sisters lovingly wake up early to peel and prep the food for the day's meals.

<div>I'm Ryo Goodman, and I am making this fundraiser for my family (my parents, Jenna and Robert Goodman) who have now just lost everything. <strong>My childhood home, the Altadena house that my family has called our home for 22 years now, has burned to the ground as a result of the devastating destruction of the Eaton Fire.</strong> My family only barely made it out in time late Tuesday night (Jan 7) with our cat Luna, but did not have the time to pack nearly anything. Their power had been cut at the time so they were scrambling in the dark, given a “threat to life” evacuation order. My mother managed to grab some important documents, a couple of mementos, and some clothes, but my father only made it out with the clothes on his back. Neither even fathomed that they would not be going back home or that this was goodbye. Everything else is gone. A home filled with a lifetime of memories, all of our family photos, my mothers portfolio and all of her paintings and art, our instruments, furniture, and family mementos and heirlooms, wiped out in one night. Just everything. Gone. <strong>This has left my parents homeless and not knowing what to do next.</strong> Anything you can do to help us is truly so, so appreciated. As of right now they are staying with friends, and may be able to get an Airbnb for a couple weeks but after that things aren’t sure. We have home insurance, but that won’t cover all of the costs of recovering from this disaster. Further adding to their struggle is that they have been put in a position where they need to care for my grandmother, who is elderly and infirm, and has high care needs. She was also displaced in the fires, as her care facility she was living in is also in Altadena. Funds will be used to help soften the recovery from this event and help us all restart our lives from scratch.

I met him in 2020 in the wake of another catastrophe - the COVID pandemic - and I think I speak for everyone in his life when I say that he has brought so much to his communities through his friendship and camaraderie, his wicked sense of humor, his profound sense of community justice, and his immense talent and passion for both editing and performing. I am so proud to call him the love of my life and I want to do everything I can to support him in his time of need.

<div><strong>On Tuesday, January 7th, just days after Taylor's birthday, the Palisades Fire began about three miles north of his home of five and a half years - which he had largely refurnished just two months prior and loved so dearly.</strong>

<div>After the ordeal of nearly having to flee on foot and finally escaping the neighborhood in hours of gridlock traffic, Taylor was able to evacuate with his dear cats, Caesar and Penny, to my home in Ventura, which thankfully is an hour west of LA and not impacted by the fires. We spent an anxious night watching the fire map like hawks, hoping for a miracle as the fire completely surrounded the area around his apartment, burning up the hillsides and homes to the north, south, east, and west.

<div><strong>On Wednesday, January 8th, at around noon, Taylor received confirmation from his landlord that the entire apartment complex had burned to the ground, along with most of the city of Pacific Palisades.</strong>

<div>Pasadena Waldorf School has made significant progress this year in the wake of the Eaton Fire. In the months since the loss of our Mariposa campus, our faculty, staff, and community have worked with exceptional focus to stabilize operations, strengthen programs, and lay the groundwork for a strong future.

<div>We successfully reestablished classrooms and student life at our temporary campuses, and are in the process of remediation and repair at our surviving Mendocino Campus in Altadena, and have cleared and prepared our Mariposa campus for an eventual rebuild, all while continuing to offer the full breadth of a Waldorf education. The PWS Board of Trustees has also advanced a long-term facilities planning process to chart the school’s path forward, including envisioning the rebuild of the Mariposa site. While the year has brought challenge, it has also revealed the resilience, commitment, and generosity that define PWS, allowing us to move ahead with both clarity and optimism.

<div>The costs of temporary relocation, remediation, repair, and eventual rebuild at our Mariposa campus will far exceed insurance and FEMA support, so we are adjusting our Go Fund Me goal as we head into 2026. Help Rebuild Lives: Aid Kiana's Family Post-Fire Disaster

<div>My dear friends <strong>Rachel Robb Kondrath</strong> and <strong>Chris Hill</strong> tragically <strong>lost their home</strong> in the <strong>devastating Los Angeles Eaton wildfire</strong> in the early hours of the morning of Jan 8, 2025. I'm raising money to help them through this very challenging time. Rachel and Chris had recently returned from their honeymoon when the fire destroyed their beloved home. Rachel has been active in her Altadena &amp; Pasadena communities, with volunteer work that includes supporting the local libraries, assisting home gardeners and community gardens, civic organizing, teaching neighbors how to use power tools, and designing graphics for Altadena nonprofits. Chris helps friends and neighbors by donating his car repair and electronics repair skills, and cooking for community potlucks. <strong>They are committed to helping their fellow Altadenans rise from the ashes.</strong>

<div>When the Eaton fire broke out on January 7, Adam and Sarah Rager had to quickly evacuate their Altadena home. They fled with their two young children, their cat and two dogs, and just two bags of essentials.

<div>The fire hit their neighborhood hard, destroying all of the houses on their street. Their house and everything in it, along with their second car, are gone. <strong>Adam and Sarah and their children and pets are safe and sheltered but have lost almost everything they own.</strong>

Their home was a gathering space for friends and neighbors, where art and music flowed freely, fostering a deep sense of community.

Their studio was adorned with antique presses, hand-mixed inks, and the unmistakable scent of creativity in action. More than just a workspace, it was a hub for inspiration where Ken and Shino poured their hearts into their craft.

Tina is one of my oldest and best friends -- we met on the first day of orientation at Oxy back in 1996. Tina and Robbie are artists in every sense of the word (writing, directing, making music, etc.), they are wonderful parents, and they've spent the last two years literally making a dream home for their incredible free spirited kids. They also have 3 well-behaved senior dogs. Like so many others in the Altadena community, they've lost everything, their clothes, their keepsakes, childhood photos, journals. They put their life savings into this house and now are trying to figure out how to start over at zero. I’ve created this gofundme for them to give them some hope as they figure out what's next.

Last night, we evacuated at 2:30am and the house was gone by 4:30am along with the rest of the houses in our neighborhood. It’s unimaginable. I have so few pictures of the house, but I’ll always remember it as being a work of art.
