(In English below) Esta chica tan guapa llamada María Magdalena, Magda para los amigos, llegó a nuestro santuario "La Casa de las Estrellas" en Lanzarote a principios de Junio. Venía de un abuso muy grande. Además nació on una malformación en sus patas delanteras y nunca había sido atendida por un veterinario. Ya empezamos con las revisiones veterinarias y pasó cirugía para la esterilización durante la cual se le diagnosticó emometra. Se trata de una forma de piometra con sangrado. El traumatólogo evaluó la posibilidad de operarla para darle una mayor calidad de vida. En Julio estuvimos haciendo muchas pruebas y consultas con especialistas para que los resultados de este estudio médico con los nos aconsejara cuál sería el próximo paso. En agosto el veterinario nos dijo que las partes de EEUU que estaban esperando ya llegaron. La primera cirugía se programó. A principios de setiembre empezó la recaudación de los costes de las cirugías. Se compraron los billetes para Tenerife y se le hizo la primera cirugía: La técnica utilizada no es totalmente nueva pero si lo es en casos como el de Magda. Generalmente se aplica en fracturas mal soldadas y se cuenta con 3 patas de apoyo y ligamentos sanos. Con Magda tenemos el problema de que sus ligamentos son más extensos de lo normal debido a que por mucho tiempo ella no ha usado sus patas de la forma correcta. Antes de pasar a cirugía hicimos un estudio. A través del TAC se realizó una copia de su pata con una impresora 3D y se aplicó una copia del tutor real. Todo funcionó a la perfección pero sabemos que la realidad nos puede dar unas sorpresas. En la práctica se ha cortado el hueso en el punto de doblaje y se han aplicado dos anillos, uno en cada extremidad. Los anillos ahora mismo tienen la angulación de su malformación. Los anillos están conectados con un extensor que se puede registrar manualmente. Después tendremos que esperar unas dos semanas que la parte cortada empiece la vascularización. A partir de este momento tendremos que regular el tensor 3 veces al día hasta llegar a tener las dos extremidades del hueso en paralelo. En este momento pasaremos a un tutor rígido y esperar la solidificación del hueso. La variable que asusta más es la reacción de los tendones. Magda se está portando como una campeona. Ya está moviendo los primeros pasos y esta noche ha dormido de un tirón sin casi lamentarse. Es toda una guerrera con el alma tierna. A finales de setiembre volvimos con Magda a Tenerife para su primera revisión. Las heridas estaban perfectas. El traumatólogo quedó maravillado con su actitud y resilencia. Queda todavía un largo (¡y costoso!) camino por recorrer. La atención que Madga require ha significado sacrificar horas de nuestro rastro benéfico y cancelación de mercadillos, una de nuestras fuentes de ingresos más importantes. De ahí que hayamos decidido lanzar esta recaudación aquí. Magda nos necesita más que nunca. Cualquier contribución, por pequeña que sea, nos ayuda. She came from a very severe abuse. On top of that, she was born with a malformation on her front paws and she had never been seen by a veterinarian. We already started veterinary checkups, and she underwent spaying surgery, during which she was diagnosed with emometra. It's a form of pyometra with bleeding. The orthopedic surgeon evaluated the possibility of operating on her to give her a better quality of life. During July we did many tests and consults with specialist so the results of this medical study would advise us of the next step. In August the vet told us that the parts from the US that we were waiting for had arrived. The first surgery was scheduled. At the beginning of September the collection for the costs of the surgeries. Tickets to Tenerife were bought and she underwent her first surgery. The technique used is not entirely new, but it is in cases like Magda’s. Generally, it is applied in poorly healed fractures, where there are three supporting legs and healthy ligaments. In Magda's case, however, we face the problem that her ligaments are more stretched than normal, since she has not used her legs correctly for a long time. Before moving on to surgery, we carried out a study. Through a CT scan, we created a 3D-printed copy of her leg and applied a replica of the actual fixator. Everything worked perfectly, though we know reality can always bring surprises. In practice, we cut the bone at the bending point and applied two rings, one at each end. The rings currently have the same angulation as her malformation. They are connected by an extender that can be manually adjusted. Then we had to wait about two weeks for the cut bone to begin vascularizing. After that, we will need to adjust the extender three times a day until both ends of the bone are parallel. At that point, we will move to a rigid fixator and wait for the bone to solidify. The most concerning variable is how the tendons will react. Magda is behaving like a true champion. She is already taking her first steps, and last night she slept straight through without almost any complaints. She is a real warrior with a tender soul. At the end of September Madga had her first check up back in Tenerife. The wounds were perfect. The orthopedist was amazed by Maria Magdalena's attitude and resilience. There is still a long (and costly!) way to go. Madga's requirements meant we had to sacrifice the opening hours of our charity 2nd had shop and cancel some of our markets, one of our main sources of funds.
