Bears in Space Theft Recovery

<strong>Thank you to everyone who donated to our GoFundMe campaign! Your generous contributions helped us cover health care for our employees and bridge the costs while our stores were closed. Now that Amoeba San Francisco and Amoeba Berkeley are open again, we are ending the campaign.</strong><br /><br /><br /><br />A Brief History of Amoeba Music <br /><br />30 years ago, Amoeba Music founders Dave Prinz and Marc Weinstein had a crazy idea. Let’s open up an independent record store, beholden to no corporate interests, that could become a gathering place for the musical community. A record store that would have an affordable mix of new and used product, that could serve as a trading post where people could bring in any unwanted music or movies for cash or trade.<br /><br />So we rented a space on Telegraph Avenue in Berkeley that had been shuttered for years. And we spent the summer of 1990 going to flea markets, garage sales and running a tiny classified in the SF Chronicle that netted us some truly amazing collections. And we put that store together. Piece by piece.<br /><br /><img src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/47513602_1587357685510971_r.jpeg" alt="47513602_1587357685510971_r.jpeg" width="100%" media_type="3" /><br />Many of our friends thought we were crazy too. We were going up against some very formidable stores - Tower Berkeley and Leopold’s Records. Both were over five times as large as us - how could we compete? But we believed. And we begged and borrowed and put up everything we had in the world, all in, to make this work.<br /><br /><img src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/47513602_1587358438494053_r.jpeg" alt="47513602_1587358438494053_r.jpeg" width="100%" media_type="3" /><br />The night before we were to open, the Berkeley Inn across the street from us caught fire. We spent that night up on our roof with garden hoses putting out ember after ember wafting over from the fire. We were there that night until 4am, then went home to catch a few hours sleep before our Grand Opening.<br /><br />When we arrived back the next morning, wiped out and bleary-eyed, we saw something we never expected. We saw something that to this day still gives us chills. <br /><br />

And our hearts sang. But we remain. Through your support we have been able to contribute to thousands of charitable causes over the years.  Including raising over $600,000 for Hurricane Katrina rebuilding; and working with the Rainforest Action Network to preserve and protect many millions of acres of Rainforest. Help Amoeba Survive & Continue Health Benefits

The Pink House is in Conway Arkansas and that has helped shelter so many LGBTQ  youth and young adults.  It is under the risk of being sold so we are trying to help raise money to help keep it in the family thats done so much for the LGBTQ community.  <br /><br />We understand that we are asking for a significant amount of money, so we also wanted to update everyone on what these funds will specifically go towards. Although the owner has a full time job, maintaining the bills AND the necessary repairs/outdated systems simultaneously has proven to be difficult. The funds will go to help pay for the following repairs, some of which have been competed, however, debt is still owed on them. <br />New roof(competed), electrical and plumbing updates, banister, foundation/porch repair(completed), and insurance. <br />The owner inherited the house in far worse condition that it is in, and has invested as much money as possible to help keep the Pink House, and all it stands for, afloat. The house means so much to our community and is a key part of LGBTQ+ history in Arkansas so we want to do all that we can to keep that legacy alive.<br /><br />75,000 is asking a lot, but I believe it is worth it for this cause.  It would take to cover funds until it becomes a historical landmark in 2020. Other financial options are available when that happens. <br /><br />My name is Nicki, from Hot Springs AR and I am part of the LQBTQ+ performance community.  Justin is the sole beneficiary of this campaign and will be making withdrawals himself. <br /><br />About The Pink House: <br /><br />In 1986, Schenck and Loyd moved to Conway and purchased the landmark home. <br /><br />The two became politically and socially active in the mid-90s in light of the Defense of Marriage Act's (DOMA) enactment and belittling remarks about same-sex rights by then-Governor Mike Huckabee.<br /><br />The "Pink House" also served as a starting point for the Conway Pride Parade, the first pride parade in Arkansas, for the last 16 years. The initial parades  were met with much hostility and counter protests, death threats, and even gun violence. This did not deter the mission. For years, Schenck, a worker at the historic Stonewall Inn during the riots, and Loyd, a veteran of the Vietnam War, continued to quietly house kids that were expelled from their homes for being gay, and now their legacy lives on through their children.
