2025 Wildfire Relief Fund

<div>We are a family of four from Saint Peter, MN. Kayla and Brad are proud parents of Yuri (8 years old) and Rylan (4 years old). Due to <strong>Rylan's recently diagnosed end stage kidney disease</strong> (explained in detail below), we are raising funds to help us meet the financial demands of caring for a chronically ill child with very specific and intense needs that often can only be met at Mayo in Rochester.

<div>Rylan's story: It all started when Rylan was still 3 years old on April 1st, 2024, with facial puffiness. Kayla took Rylan to the doctor and was told it was most likely allergies and should go away within 10 days with antihistamines. However, on April 10th, we noticed he also had swollen legs and a distended belly. After spending most of the day at the ER in Mankato, Kayla had to take him to Saint Mary's Hospital in Rochester. He was admitted to Saint Mary's Children's Hospital that night and a few days later was diagnosed with focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS), which is a rare, chronic kidney disease.

<div>Rylan spent the next 2 months as an inpatient at Saint Mary's due to many complications and not responding to treatment. After discharge in June, he had to have albumin infusions 3-5 days a week, which can only be done in Rochester. Thus, we rented a two-bedroom apartment in Rochester to accommodate his demanding infusion and treatment schedule. We were hoping that he would respond to treatment by September, go into remission, and resume a relatively normal life.

<div>Unfortunately, that is not what happened. Brad and Rylan began living at the apartment starting mid-August while Kayla and Yuri live in their house in Saint Peter. We are all together on the weekends. This arrangement is less than ideal and has taken a toll on all of us emotionally, physically, and financially. Rylan had to be admitted to the hospital multiple times in the fall due to more complications. By December, Rylan was still not showing any signs of remission.

<div>On December 20th, Rylan was admitted to Saint Mary's again due to abnormally high levels of creatinine and blood urea nitrogen (BUN). Three days later, he had another kidney biopsy and a dialysis catheter inserted. We found out on December 25th that his kidneys are beyond repair. The doctors discovered that his FSGS is very aggressive and all of his glomeruli are now collapsed. He started dialysis immediately and is now on it three days a week. It has been tough on him, but he's feeling better.

<div>The next step in his treatment is to have a kidney transplant.

<div>As a family, we are still separated and struggling with the reality of our situation, but we march on.

<div>My name is Teisha. I am just a regular undeserving gal with really amazing friends. I've known my best friend Rachael for 20 years. It was during a recent trip to visit her family in Indiana that would change her life as she knew it. With her family in tow, they took an RV road trip to see snow for the first time. Unfortunately, she took a fall and hurt herself. Being a busy mother of six, she brushed it off and scheduled a follow-up with her doctor for when she and the family returned home. The doctor ordered an ultrasound to ensure she was healing properly and there wasn't more damage that needed attention. The damage Rachael and her doctor discovered wasn't what any of us were expecting. My dear friend learned that the scan showed masses on her thyroid. After further testing, she would later find out one of these masses is cancer. Rachael went from working full-time with the elderly, opening her own business, caring for her six beautiful children to waiting rooms, needles, scans, soon-to-be radiation and more terrible news. I'll never forget the call I received just after midnight the day she found out. You watch movies or shows, hear stories, pray for people, and just hope that the c-word doesn't ever become a reality for people you love and adore. I don't think any of us really want to believe it. Her medical expenses have been taxing on the family. Life is relentless, I tell you. Right now, I just really want to help my friend. While Rachael is not one to ever ask for help, I thought maybe, just maybe, a little help with their financial burden could help her focus on fighting and healing. As well as give her family the space to support her without having to worry about the next medical bill. If you have the opportunity to support Rachael with her unexpected and overwhelming financial obligations, it would be appreciated more than you could ever know. Day after day, I realize it really does take a village. Please lift her up and in your thoughts and hold her family in your heart while they fight this battle together. <div>At La Grange Elementary in eastern North Carolina, our students face significant economic challenges, but their potential to grow and learn is limitless. As a Title I school where 100% of our students qualify for free breakfast and lunch, we're committed to providing enriching educational experiences that can change lives. We're seeking to build a greenhouse that will serve all of our K-5 students, creating hands-on learning opportunities while addressing food security in our community.

<div>As the school's Digital Learning Specialist and Testing coordinator, I work side by side with teachers and students to maximize learning.  The use of this greenhouse always for another avenue to maximize their learning through hands on activities.  Once the fundraiser is complete, I will purchase all of the items needed and have 4 volunteers ready to assemble the greenhouse, as well as a plumber who is ready to assist with installation.  Our village of parents and community members are always ready to lend a hand to benefit our students.
