Dr. Gedicks was an educator and a long-time social and environmental justice activist who worked for communities in Congo, Central and South America and for Indigenous Nations primarily in Wisconsin but also in Michigan and Minnesota. Memorial for Dr. Al Gedicks' Lifelong Activism

Hi everyone, This is so hard for me to ask for help. I get so much joy by giving to as many in my community as I can through donations of money and time and sweat equity. I love supporting your kids selling cookies and giving to non-profits that mean something to the people I care about as well as candidates for office that want to improve our community. But as many of you know, I was laid off from my job in April and have been diligently looking for work since, but so far the stars have not aligned and I guess the old saying “when it rains it pours” kind of applies here. Today Winston (5 months, 35 lbs) was playing outside with his big brother Murphy (7 years, 75 lbs) as they do everyday, having good fun chasing each other through the yard. I guess the play just got a little too rough and Winston started screaming and yelping in pain. I was outside with them and poor Winston’s scream will haunt my nightmares forever. It was blood curdling. Luckily our vet was able to see us right away and did an xray identifying he fractured his left back leg in the middle of his femur. The good news is that it does not appear to affect his growth plate. The bad news is that he needs surgery and will either get some sort of mesh or plate or pins inserted to help heal. We do have pet insurance, so we expect that a large portion of the medical costs will be covered, fingers crossed. But insurance always declines some portions of costs, we have a $250 deductible, a 10% co-sharing of cost, and a $10,000 policy limit. Right now the cost from today’s visit with X-rays and pain medications and overnight boarding was $816. 

The estimate for surgery and hospitalization through Monday is $8,632.20 to $9,405.20. 

And that doesn’t include what I’m sure will be a few follow up visits to ensure he heals properly. On top of all of this, we will obviously have to keep him calm and in a crate or supervised and in a separate area from his brothers as he heals. I guess for once the timing is good, that I can tend to him since I’m not working. Worst case scenario, it looks like this might cost us between $9,448 to $10,200 at minimum. 

Our co-share of costs given the insurance policy will probably be upwards of $1,000 plus $250 deductible, and that is only if the insurance company agrees the hospital's costs are all “reasonable” and they are willing to reimburse us the policy max of up to $10k. It would mean so much to Paul, Winston, and me if you could chip in $5, $15, $25 or more if you are able to right now. I promise when I’m back on my feet and working again that I will pay it forward. Help Winston Heal with Love

Hi, My name is Sunshine. In case you're new here, I’m here to ask for your help to care for my best friend, Tarneka. This has been an incredibly difficult year for all of us, but it is so much more difficult when you’re living alone and suffering from multiple medical issues. Tarneka is being buried with medical, financial, and life crises that are beyond her control, and she needs help. She needs all of us now more than ever before. It’s so hard to ask for help, and to share personal details about her health, but her situation is dire and she needs the support, both financial and emotional. Tarneka continues to have extensive health problems. She has had quite a few falls in her apartment recently, though thankfully has not sustained any major injuries yet. Her doctors now suspect that her brain tumor has returned, and she also needs to have a procedure done on her ostomy that will require a hospital stay. Life during a pandemic is stressful to us all, but for someone living alone with chronic and serious health complications, it is devastating on a daily basis. Her immediate need is $1,000 for medical supplies, medications, and masks that are not covered by medical insurance. She could also use help with affording grocery delivery since she is unable to shop for herself, and affording yarn and a printer to help occupy her days in isolation. She could also use your love and prayers. She told me prayer is at the top of the list. Please join me in easing Tarneka’s burden a little bit. Tarneka's Health and Life Journey Phase 5

Hello, My name is Sunshine, and I am trying to raise money for my best friend, Tarneka. Life with multiple chronic illnesses is so difficult, and it is made that much more difficult when you just don’t have the money to pay for your care. In addition to dealing with bowel blockages, multiple hospitalizations and a new diagnosis of twisted bowel syndrome, Tarneka has just found out that the cancer has returned. She currently has Stage 1 Gastric cancer, and must undergo another surgery next month to remove the tumor and a portion of her stomach. She will also need to have chemotherapy. The doctors are optimistic, but her difficult road is far from over, as she continues to face mounting health problems and financial needs. With all of these surgeries and complications, come more and more expenses that Tarneka cannot afford on her own. There are medications that are not covered by insurance, as well as colostomy supplies that she has to buy herself. The new medicine that has helped to decrease the bowel blockages, and has kept Tarneka out of the hospital for almost a month, costs nearly $400 a month. And that is not covered by her insurance! On her already very limited budget, that is a huge, yet very necessary, expense. I have always been in awe of how Tarneka is able to do so much with so little. She is amazing at budgeting, but when you don’t have the money, you don’t have the money. Tarneka doesn’t want to ask for help, but she needs to ask for help. I’ve picked her up and brought her home from the hospital two times this year. I’ve stayed at her apartment while she showered and changed her bag. I’ve seen the scars that line her abdomen from all the different surgeries, the scars that line her arms from the countless IVs they struggle to maintain while she’s in the hospital. I’ve watched her meticulously lay out all of the supplies to clean, change, and care for her colostomy. I’m in awe of her strength in the midst of her weaknesses and illnesses. I’m in awe of her faith and her heart. I do as much as I can to help support and care for, as do her close friends and family. But we cannot do this alone. Tarneka's Medical Journey Continues -  Phase 4

There's crisis at our southern border.  A Crisis of Love. Migrants are fleeing Guatamala, Honduras, El Savador, and other countries due to violence and fear. Our country is not honoring our own laws for asylum seekers.  This administration is separating children from their parents, older kids are caring for babies, and the conditions they are forced to live in are squalid.  I've been despondent as images have come out of Texas. I've donated. Called my elected officials. Shared info on social media. I still feel useless and helpless. That's why I've decided to take five days off from work/life and go to El Paso with some other fierce female activists to volunteer with a variety of organizations that are helping migrants who have just been released from ICE/CBP custody. They're dropped off at various sites with no food, no money, and sometimes no shoes.  We will help them make travel arrangements to their family in the U.S., get them fed, and help them with any medical issues they might have from their time in detention (many of them are sick, have diarrhea, many of the women have UTIs and yeast infections from not being able to shower).  We will run to Costco to buy supplies for the charities when they run low on things like tampons or underwear. We will hug the asylum seekers. We will tell them that we see them. We will tell them America isn't what they just experienced. We will play with the kids. We will respond to this crisis with love. I'm asking you to help me get there. Flights from NY to El Paso are about $600. Lodging and ground transportation will be around $400 - $500. I will cover my own food and incidentals.  Anything above my exact travel costs that I raise will go directly to buying supplies for migrants or giving them $5 or $10 to use on the bus for food during their travel.  Please give what you can. So many of you have said things on social media about how insane this is. How scary it is to see our country devolving so quickly into authoritarianism. You can't make the trek to El Paso to help. I can and I am. Please help me get there and help provide basic needs to these terrified human beings. I will bear witness to these atrocities.
