Jessie has been diagnosed with Interstitial Lung Disease, caused by Mixed Connective Tissue Disease, a rare and aggressive condition that continues to destroy her lungs even with treatment. Despite her strength and determination, her lung function has dropped below 45%, and doctors have confirmed that she will need a double lung transplant within the next year to survive.

<div>Jessie is a devoted mother to our 8-year-old daughter, and a loving stepmom to our 12 and 14-year-old children. Without this transplant, she may never get to see them graduate, go to prom, or walk down the aisle. We are fighting with everything we have to give her that chance.

<div>A transplant is just the beginning of a long and demanding recovery journey. Jessie and I will need to relocate near the Mayo Clinic for 3 to 4 months after surgery for intensive follow-up care, physical therapy, and constant medical monitoring. During this time:

<div>Elora is a fighter, but she faces a battle no child should have to endure. She has been diagnosed with <strong>Leigh Syndrome</strong>, a rare and progressive disease that affects the central nervous system. This disorder is caused by a genetic mutation that impacts the mitochondria, the “powerhouse” of the cells, leading to energy deficiencies that can severely damage or even destroy cells throughout the body.

<div>Leigh Syndrome affects only <strong>1 in 40,000 children</strong>, and while there is currently no cure, treatment consists of medications and supplements to help manage symptoms and slow progression. Hearing this diagnosis has been devastating, but Elora’s strength inspires us to fight alongside her.

<div>Elora’s story has been one of resilience from the very beginning. She made her entrance into the world at just<strong> 33 weeks' gestation</strong>, spending her first five weeks in the NICU. She struggled to breathe on her own, and though doctors prepared for her to go home on oxygen, she defied expectations, coming off oxygen support just 24 hours before discharge.

<div>For a while, it seemed like she was on the other side of her early challenges. But as she grew, her parents noticed something wasn’t quite right. She wasn’t gaining weight as expected. After multiple pediatrician visits and specialist consultations, she was diagnosed with <strong>growth hormone deficiency (GHD)</strong>.

<div>An MRI, meant to assess her pituitary gland, revealed something far more concerning. A quick Google search of the suspected diagnosis left her parents heartbroken, Leigh Syndrome. The prognosis they found was devastating: most children with this condition do not live past the age of three. And Elora was just months away from her second birthday.

<div>Still, there was hope. Initial genetic tests came back negative for mitochondrial mutations, giving her family a brief sigh of relief. But at a follow-up with her geneticist, additional tests showed <strong>elevated lactate levels</strong>, confirming a mitochondrial disorder.

<div>Two weeks ago, Elora was hospitalized for<strong> five days</strong> as doctors worked to regulate her levels and place an NG feeding tube to help provide the nutrition she needs. This is only the beginning of a <strong>long and difficult road</strong> ahead. No two cases of Leigh Syndrome look the same, but her family remains steadfast in their faith, praying for slow progression, and ultimately, a cure.

Tiffany Marie Basch, 18 years of age, tragically passed in a car incident early Sunday morning. Tiffany is a Niceville High graduate of the 2020 class and was studying to become a Physical Therapist at UCF class of 2024. She was one of the sweetest souls you’d ever encounter, and she loved people better than just about anyone I know. Her smile could light up the darkest night. My heart, and the hearts of many, are so broken over this loss. The Basch family is devastated, as they have to mourn the loss of a true angel on Earth. I am calling out Niceville and surrounding areas to help them in their time of grief. We are blessed to live in one of the greatest communities in the world, and in moments like this, it is imperative we come together in an effort to provide relief and comfort to the Basch family. No family should ever be burdened by the cost of laying their loved one to rest, so I implore you to consider donating to this fund in order to allow the family to focus solely on grieving their daughter. Update- The holidays should be a time to celebrate, spend time with loved ones and prepare for a  new year full of adventures. Christmas this year will look quite different. Instead of hanging up baby’s first Christmas, they will be hanging angel wings on the tree. There will not be matching Pj’s or the new Xbox Kohltan wanted under the tree. The excitement of watching your children open their presents will be overshadowed by pain. Losing a child is something no parent should have to experience, a heartbreak that is completely unfathomable. The Ward’s are living every parents’ worst nightmare. On top of that, Kohltan‘s medical bills are starting to come in (life flight, brain surgery, surgery on his leg, MRIs, CT scans, X-rays, 5 days in the pediatric ICU). The driver of the vehicle had the minimum policy required and it will not cover the majority of  the medical bills that were accrued. Asher and Caleb have missed work since the accident. All donations are a tremendous help to the family during their darkest time.
