I am raising funds for my brother, Samuel James Wood, after Sam passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday 9/8/26, leaving behind his loving wife, Kyrsten, their beautiful 6-year-old daughter, Everly, and their sweet 3-year-old son, Barret. Our family is heartbroken, and I want to do what I can to support the people Sam loved most.

 Sam was a devoted husband, an incredible father, and a steady source of love, humor, and strength for everyone who knew him. In the months before his passing, Sam had been out of work due to an unconfirmed medical condition. He was on the mend and hopeful about returning to work, but his sudden passing has left his family facing not only overwhelming grief, but also significant financial strain.

<div>Jillian has been fighting breast cancer for the past few years with a level of courage that honestly blows me away. She walked through chemo, surgery, and proton radiation with grit and grace. Since her diagnosis on April 15th, 2024, she has had 6 surgeries, 3 biopsies, 3 MRIs, 17 X-rays, 6 ultrasounds, 3 mammograms, 2 PET scans, 1 echo, 2 ECGs, 8 CT scans, thousands of supplements, hundreds of injections, 14 chemotherapy sessions (56 hours), 16 radiation sessions (32 hours + 64 hours driving to appointments), more lab draws than I can count, multiple consultations for 2nd and 3rd opinions, and countless hours in the car and waiting rooms.

<div>And in October 2025, she finally got the news she had been fighting so hard for:

<div>No evidence of disease. Remission.

<div>Then came May 2026, and the news none of us wanted. The nodule had doubled in size, and new ones had appeared. Her doctors at Regions and Mayo both agreed it was concerning. Because the nodules are still too small to biopsy, she’s stuck in this awful “wait and see” place, which is torture for someone like Jillian who needs to do something, not sit still.

<div>Even though her doctors won’t officially say the words without a biopsy, they’ve told her the truth:

<div>Over the past few weeks, life changed very quickly for Michael and his family. What started as shortness of breath, fatigue, and trouble breathing unexpectedly turned into a series of urgent scans, tests, specialist appointments, and hospital visits. Doctors discovered a mass in his right lung that caused part of his lung to collapse, along with additional findings that raised concerns the cancer may have spread beyond the lung. <strong>On Tuesday, May 12, doctors also found lesions on Michael’s brain, making the situation even more serious and overwhelming.</strong> Additional full-body scans are now needed to determine whether the cancer has spread elsewhere throughout his body. In what felt like the blink of an eye, we went from thinking this might be a respiratory issue to meeting with pulmonologists and oncologists, undergoing biopsies and imaging, and beginning discussions about treatment for metastatic adenocarcinoma.

<div>The speed and seriousness of everything has been overwhelming. Between ongoing appointments, upcoming treatments, time away from work, and the emotional toll this has taken on our family, we are facing challenges we never imagined just a short time ago. We both have full time jobs and were pretty comfortable in our normal routine. Life was simple and steady—until everything changed in an instant.

<div>We woke up one Monday to devastating news: my two children from a previous marriage, ages 11 and 14, lost their mother in a tragic car accident. Even more heartbreaking, my daughter was also in the car at the time. She was in the back seat, not wearing a seat belt, when their vehicle was struck by a semi-truck. She is now in the hospital out of state, fighting for her life. She has suffered a traumatic brain injury, multiple facial fractures, and one of her legs has been severely damaged. Her road to recovery will be long, painful, and uncertain. If I could, I would be by her side every second of the day. Unfortunately, I cant. I work full time, and have my wife, Megan and daughter, Jaelynn to take care of too.

<div>Due to problems in my previous marriage, it has been years since I’ve been able to see or be with my children. Their mother moved frequently, and I was denied access and contact for much of their young lives. The doctor called and said they got a feeding tube in for her, got a tracheotomy so she can breathe easier… just for now while she is undergoing facial reconstruction surgery. They are fixing all of her bones in her face through her mouth so she wont have scars on the outside. I have a lot of faith in these doctors. <div>She met her amazing husband Bryan 5 years ago and they started their life together. They wed on April 22, 2021, and continued to grow their lives. Patiently awaiting a lifelong dream of being a mom, Amy found out she was pregnant in July 2022. Her pregnancy was fairly normal with morning sickness, aches and pains. Amy was enjoying the feeling of the baby fluttering, kicking and doing acrobatics.

<div>Unfortunately, at 34.5 weeks pregnant, Amy became suddenly ill and had to be rushed to the hospital by ambulance. Baby Myles Henry was born on February 16th at 5lbs 9oz, 19 inches, sadly he did not survive. Amy was taken to ICU where more care was provided to her. It was found that she had an unpreventable infection, she was very sick and in critical condition. After many tests, it was determined that Amy had gone without oxygen for too long and did not have brain activity.

<div>Amy was a registered organ donor, at that time the family proceeded to follow her wishes and move forward with the organ donation. During the early morning of February 21st, Amy was given an honor walk through the halls of Mercy Hospital. Where many friends, family and hospital staff lined the hallways to honor Amy and her generous gift.

<div>Shawn and his wife Kelly contracted Covid-19 in late November 2021. Kelly was taken by ambulance and admitted into the ICU on Dec 2nd. Four days later, Shawn was also taken by ambulance and admitted into the ICU.

<div>During her first few days in the ICU, Kelly made some improvements, but her condition deteriorated rapidly after that. She was put into a medically induced coma and put on a ventilator on Wednesday Dec. 8th. The next day, her kidneys failed, and she was airlifted to St. John's Hospital as they were better equipped to save and maintain Kelly's life.

<div>Shawn spent 8 days in the ICU before he was sent home with oxygen. He is currently recovering at home while caring for their 10-year-old son, Drake, and 7-year-old twin daughters Arabella &amp; Camille.

<div>Kelly and the incredible ICU team fought long and hard against this terrible disease, but her body was exhausted and unable to recover. She passed away on December 29, 2021, with Shawn and her sister Tricia by her side. She leaves a gaping hole in the hearts of her children, her family, and everyone who knew her.

<div>After insurance, Shawn is looking at tens of thousands of dollars in medical bills and other expenses in the coming months. It is unclear when he will be able to return to work, as he is still recovering and is now left to raise his children without the love of his life by his side. We hope to alleviate the financial burden so that he can focus solely on the kids and their wellbeing, as they adjust to life without Kelly. Elena was born with grade 3 microtia/atresia, and she has hemifacial microsomia. When Elena was first born, we met with as many specialists as we could in Georgia, we Skyped with many across the nation and have traveled to NYC and Nashville to meet with the top Microtia doctors and researchers. After hearing, reading, and seeing everything, we decided that the MEDPOR surgery was the best option we for Elena which will include a hearing aid implant. When Elena was 2.5 years old, a CT scan was ordered to determine if Elena was a candidate for ear canal reconstruction. Due to her facial palsy, we knew that she likely wasn't, but it was a necessary step before the surgery.  It showed us that Elena had a small rupture behind her closed canal where her middle ear would've developed. While it was a non-cancerous tumors, it would still be dangerous if it wasn't removed. On February 15th 2018, Elena underwent a reverse ear canal surgery. Essentially, they opened her ear up, cleaned it out, and sealed it shut. At that time, Elena did not weigh enough to undergo the MEDPOR surgery concurrently. The upcoming surgery is approximately $54,000, due up front with no guarantee of reimbursement. While the first surgery was considered medically necessary, this one is considered cosmetic to make her big ear, even with the insertion of the hearing aid. We also will have to pay for travel expenses there and back as well as her hospital visit and anesthesia. We will not know those costs until after her surgery is completed. Elena is excited and brings it up and asks several times a week "When do I get my big ear?" Luckily, her excitement helps balance out our nervousness, although it won't be gone completely until her surgery is done. Elena has not let anything hold her back. Elena Runyan's Create an Ear Fund

As many of you know, Dean left for a wild ride along the Alaskan coast just last week. I'm heartbroken to report that while riding on some nasty roads near the arctic ocean on Monday evening, Dean had a pretty bad spill. After an hour alone on the road, he was found by a trucker who called for help. It took the medical folks another 3 hours to get to him and 3 more hours to get him to the closest clinic. After a few hours of wonderful care and careful observation, the folks there made the call to fly Dean to a hospital in Anchorage for a higher level of care and additional tests. <br /><br />The good news is that other than four broken ribs and an injured spleen, the scans show he has no broken bones.  At this point, it looks like an underlying medical event of some sort caused the accident- and so the accident is NOT what caused the more serious medical stuff. I guess this means Jared and I have to stop giving him a hard time about riding fast and redirect our energy into guilting him into taking better care of himself. We're waiting to hear the results from the other battery of tests the good folks at Providence Medical Center are running, and we'll update you all as we know more. <br /><br />We don't know when he'll be well enough to travel- we're hoping we can get him transferred to a hospital in the Twin Cities in the next week or so. Our mom is currently on a flight up to work with the doctors on his behalf as he's still pretty out of it. It's unclear what kinds of support he'll need when he gets home, but maybe someone could get a food-train going when we get to that point? Let me know if you'd be able to organize something like that.  <br /><br />This fundraiser is to help cover travel and medical expenses resulting from the accident, which are already piling up. And if you can't swing a donation, no worries! Dean vs. Wild

A very  upstanding and loving family has been put through a terrible ordeal; it  has affected them all in so many different ways. Of course there's the expense of hiring a lawyer to go  to court with them to represent their son; an expense that with nine  children and four in college, they are trying to figure out how to  afford. I've been flooded with emails from so many wonderful people, most of whom I don't even know, wanting to reach out and offer support; both emotionally and financially to this family. All the funds collected from this page will go to help cover current and future lawyer costs this family will encounter.<br><br><br>Here is their story:<br><br>The  morning of December 19 began like all others; a father took his two  children to school and because one of the children has Autism, they get  walked to their classrooms each day. Since their older brother, Andrew,  was home from college on Christmas break, the children wanted him to  walk in with them, and so he did. I should stop here and describe this  young man; Andrew, or AJ, is 6'2", has longer  hair, and as is the trend with so many young men today, he has a full  beard. We describe him as our Gentle Giant; his manners are impeccable,  he is well rounded, very well liked in his community, and at every  opportunity he shows kindness and concern for people he comes in contact  with.   On this morning all four entered the school, the father  and older brother signed themselves in, and they proceeded to the  children's classes. Along the way, a teacher recognized AJ from a  football picture that had been in the paper and chatted with him. As  they were leaving, they signed themselves out, held the door open for a  family entering the school, got in the car, and they went on their way.  It all seemed so normal; they had no idea that a child reported to her  teacher that a stranger in the hall had made threatening comments. Just a  short time later, the police arrived at their home, arrested AJ, took  him to jail, released his name and picture to the media, and so began a  day that he will remember for the rest of his life; a day that could  have an effect on the rest of his life, and a day that has changed his  perspective on how quickly a reputation can be scarred. Will his  scholarship be affected and keep him from finishing his education, will  he still be able to play the game of football, will people recognize him  for all the good things he has done or will they only remember him as  the "burly, long haired man with a bushy beard" who put schools in a  small community on lock-down because of a child's accusation of threats.   In this day and time, we all recognize the need to make our children  aware of strangers and we know the tentative position that schools and  public places are in regarding how they deal with situations; but when a  mistake like this is made, do we recognize the damage that can be done  by publicizing "facts" before they are proven to be true, and have we  done away with "innocent until proven guilty"? I don't know how you  repair this upstanding young man's reputation, but hopefully the same  media sources that were so quick to jump on the "bad guy" story, will be  just as quick to give an equal amount of time and press to restoring  this young man's faith in our judicial system and in repairing the  damage that has been done. Of course "good news" doesn't have the  journalistic "hook" that sensational, bad news does, so my guess is that  equal time and reports will be slow in coming.  A very  upstanding and loving family has been put through a terrible ordeal; it  has affected them all in so many different ways. There's the fear that  parents have when suddenly they are out of control regarding their child  and what may happen to him. There's the overwhelming sadness of the  younger children to think that anyone believes their big brother, who  shows nothing but love to them, could even possibly be thought to be a  "bad person". And of course there's the expense of hiring a lawyer to go  to court with them to represent their son; an expense that with nine  children and four in college, they are trying to figure out how to  afford. The strange twist to this is that just a few days ago, while  grocery shopping, they had the opportunity to "pay it forward", when  they paid for a man's milk who was behind them in line. When my daughter  called and we talked about that, she was so pleased that number one,  the man appreciated it, number two, a lady in the next line witnessed  their kindness and gave coupons to the person behind her, and number  three, her family learned the domino effect of kindness by one simple  deed. Now she has to teach them another lesson, how to forgive and move  beyond unfortunate circumstances that happen in their lives."
