A Legacy of Love: Support for Evariste’s Family.

<div>When we think of primary school, our memories take us back to jungle gyms, jumbo crayons, and coloring books. Back then, our worries were very few - if any. The pictured school is Open Tribe Foundation School, in Overspill, Epworth. When interacting with the children, instead of thinking of sunshines and rainbows, they will tell you they wish they had a school with toilets. Open Tribe Foundation School, has over 200 students with 60% of them being orphaned. There is no other school within an 8km (5-mile) radius for these children.

<div>When the pandemic took place, it forced us all to reflect and rethink our roles in society. Having come across Open Tribe Foundation School<strong>,</strong> we as a team ( Maxine Chisweto, Mutsa Chiromo, Maakwe Cumanzala, Ruvarashe Dahwa, Mufaro Hungwe, Michelle Kabaira, Varaidzo Kamhunga, and Nyaradzo Sirewu) decided to come together under the banner Project 25: Growing &amp; Grounded to make sure we made a difference in this small corner of society.

<div>Project 25 aims to build :

<li>a block of 6 classrooms, 3 ALREADY completed (We are half way!)

<div>in order to not only help these current students, but future students to come in the community!

<div>2.4 billion people lack access to improved sanitation facilities such as toilets. Without access to toilets, people are more vulnerable to diarrheal diseases such as typhoid and cholera, that’s why we decided to start with the toilet block.
</div>
<div>To date, and with your generosity, we have already completed the toilet block which cost us $1700 and have constructed one completed classroom bloc and are in the middle of completing another. Your efforts have allowed the school to now service Form 1-2 high school students, in addition to the Grade 1-7 students.

<div>We have partnered with other organisations to collect textbooks and purchase desks and chalkboards to aid in securing quality learning. Speaking of security, did we mention the schooled has now also been fenced in?

Help Project25 build Open Tribe Foundation School

Groupe Scolaire Bare (GS Bare) is a catholic school in the Eastern Province of Rwanda, Africa. 10 miles from the nearest large town, GS Bare provides education to 1501 primary and secondary school students, as well as 145 students in nursery school. <br /><br />The children and teachers at GS Bare welcomed a Wartburg College Class in May of 2023. We had the opportunity to see the school, classrooms, playground, and the school’s cafeteria and kitchen area. 
The majority of classrooms at GS Bare are modern and equipped with the staff and tools necessary to educate their students. However, some students are not able to return back to GS Bare for the upcoming school year due to the price of school lunch. <br /><br />Students at GS Bare pay $20 per trimester for their school lunches. There are approximately 100 students who cannot afford $20/semester for all three trimesters.  <br /><br />A donation of $60 would cover the entire school lunch cost for one student for the 2023-2024 academic year. If we could raise $6,000, all of the students could return for class in the Fall of 2023.<br /><br /><b>FAQs</b>:
 
<br /><br /><b><i>Q: Will 100% of the money be donated to the students? </i></b><br />A: GoFundMe will take 2-3% of the total money raised, as well as approximately .30 cents of every donation. Everything else will go directly to the students in need.    <br /><br /><b><i>Q: How will the money get directly to the students?</i></b><br />A: I was one of two chaperones on the trip to Africa. My good friend, Jean Bikomeye, was the other chaperone. Bikomeye attended GS Bare as a child and his family lives in a nearby village. Bikomeye personally knows the Headmaster and will transfer the money directly to him to be distributed amongst the student lunch accounts.

<div>My name is Jean C. Bikomeye. I am organizing this fundraising on behalf of Olive's orphaned children.

<div>Olive Nabakobwa was a financially-poor single mother of three children, ages 11, 16 and 18. She lived in Tunduti, a remote and rural village in Eastern Rwanda (East Africa), in a house without essential utilities like water and electricity. At the young age of 11, Olive became an orphan herself when both her parents died. 
</div>

<div>At 33 years old, after over a year of symptoms of an unknown severe disease, Olive was unfortunately diagnosed with late-stage cervical cancer in February 2021 amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Doctors at the Rwanda Cancer Center (at the Rwanda Military Hospital) treated her for the disease. Unfortunately, her cancer continued progressing, and Olive passed away in February 2023, leaving three orphaned children behind. As Olive was classified in the poorest category in the country, Partners in Health, an organization founded by the late Dr. Paul Farmer, covered some costs of her treatment, and funds raised through this platform supported the remainder of her treatment before she passed.

<div>While Olive was battling cancer (in pain and unable to work), her three children had to drop out of school and took the responsibility of caring for their very sick mother. The children farm on a tiny piece of land to generate food to feed the family. Before Olive's passing, we had put the children back in school. Those orphans now rely on funds raised on this platform to continue attending school in Rwanda.
