On September 7, <strong>Hurricane Lowell</strong> struck Kauaʻi with winds over 100 mph, forcing <strong>Ilima</strong> to evacuate the oceanfront property she calls home. When Ilima returned, the destruction was overwhelming. Roofs had been blown off. Flooding tore through the property. The kitchen and outdoor bathroom shower were destroyed, and structures across the land were badly damaged. Fruit trees, gardens, and years of cultivated permaculture land were severely impacted. The danger is still immediate: broken tree limbs are hanging overhead, and debris and damaged items remain scattered across the property, creating serious safety hazards that must be cleared before rebuilding can begin.

 This is not only storm damage. It is damage to Ilima’s home, land, daily life, and source of stability. Support will help cover urgent cleanup and safety work, including removal of dangerous limbs and debris, a generator for reliable power, repairs and rebuilding, restoration of the land and gardens, essential home needs, and living expenses and lost income during recovery. <div>Our beautiful sweet Nancy was tragically killed in an automobile accident Wednesday morning (October 2nd). Our family is heartbroken and devastated by her sudden death. Nancy had such a beautiful fun-loving soul. When she talked to you she would always ask how you are and make you smile. Nancy had so much love and care for everyone she met. We would love to release butterflies in her memory, when Nancy was younger she prayed to god to be given a sign and in that moment a butterfly landed on her finger. When Nancy's mom died she told her she would send her butterflies from heaven. Butterflies have always had a special spiritual meaning for her. We would like to share a song with you about Nancy (Sue Perst) Arbon. Nancy's close friend wrote this song about her and their friendship. This song is a wonderful example of her fun-loving spirit.

<div>Recently, my young niece (my sister's only child) was tragically killed in a horrific car crash in Kentucky (<a href="https://www.legacy.com/us/obituaries/fbnewsleader/name/colleen-hosmer-obituary?id=52653697" target="_blank" class="" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">https://www.legacy.com/us/obituaries/fbnewsleader/name/colleen-hosmer-obituary?id=52653697</a>).  Her memorial service is in 2 weeks, on October 7, and I do not have the money to get there from my home in Salt Lake City, UT.   These last two years have been unbelievably challenging and have left me with a reduced capacity to work and depleted resources.

<div>I had already been suffering from CRPS (Complex Regional Pain Syndrome), a rare, incurable neuro autoinflammatory disorder that on its worst days is excruciatingly painful and on best days slightly less so.  Added to that, after contracting COVID-19, I have been diagnosed with Long Covid, which has been extremely difficult to navigate physically and mentally.  Barely scraping by financially, I received a no-reason notice to vacate the apartment where I had lived for 12 years.  Since it was not an eviction ( I was current on my rent) I could not fight it.  Soon after receiving the notice, my appendix gangrened and was hemorrhaging, so I had to have an emergency appendectomy.  After the surgery, I was instructed not to do any lifting for at least 4 weeks, which left me with very little time to pack, move, and find another place that I could afford.
</div>

</div>
<div>So I had no choice but to move my belongings to storage and live in my car.  Pretty much all of the money I had went into these expenses, so I did not have the funds necessary to pay for a new apartment. I was finally able to find a new place, with a landlord who was kind enough to let me move in without initial payment so that I was not sleeping in my car during the brutal Utah winter.  I have been trying to catch up financially ever since.  He had been patient with me, but his patience is understandably a bit thin right now.
</div>

</div>
<div>Just when I thought I might be able to move forward, this past July I ended up with a particularly nasty bout of Pneumonia, coupled with anemia, after what I suspected was another round of Covid.  I had to be transported to the hospital by ambulance (an astronomically high expense I am now facing).  I seriously felt like I was going to die, which was pretty terrifying.  Soon after being released from the hospital, I received the call telling me of my niece's death.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>My grief has been overwhelming, and I have not been handling it well.  I have carried an inordinate amount of stress and have barely been sleeping, which has significantly hindered the recovery from my illness.  I am emotionally and physically exhausted.  Unfortunately, this has all caused a worsening of the CRPS, and I have been having to cope with the accompanying pain of the flaring.
</div>

</div>
<div>My prescribed pain medication is not covered by my insurance, so I am just having to get by without it.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>To add to all of this, my car registration and insurance renewals, along with the required

<div>emissions check, are due within the week.  I am also facing the expense of what might be a pricey car repair.
</div>

<div>As I have been most;y unable to work,  and with everything piling up as it is financially, my state of mind is pretty grim right now.  To say I am overwhelmed doesn't even begin to touch it.

<div>To top it all off, I cannot afford to travel to my niece's memorial service, which is devastating for me and my sister.  I cannot imagine not being there to support her as my niece is honored and mourned.  And I cannot exacerbate my dire financial straits by leaving all of this hanging over my head.

<div>I need to urgently raise the funds to first catch up on everything here and then provide what I need to cover travel expenses to Kentucky, including transportation (airfare or driving), lodging, and food while there.  If I can get my car fixed and the registration renewed in time, I will drive it.  If not, I will either get a rental car or fly.  I just know that I have to be there with my family in this time of staggering grief.

I'm exhausted, hyper-vigilant in my ptsd, below poverty living, diligently budgeting, seriously restricting; in total financial free fall. Before this life change, I was well-prepared, researched, consulate visits, arranged what was needed before leaving a continent away, through migration parameters during the pandemic, I'm now in a financial mess at the core of asking your support. Because of the complicated lack of national concordance between the US and SPAIN I experience no other choice than to go public with This Ask, reluctant yet hopeful for any amount in contributions, doing this in the most humble way.

<div>My inheritance was stolen from me by my only two siblings; revealed in 2016 following my parents' passing. The impact was painful related to me by legal support holding them responsible, going back decades; two probate lawyers revealed family crime originating from my lived historic toxic family abuse to this shock. I was singled out. My marriage to a jazz musician sadly left me no support financially either. Over the decades, I've managed the associated complex ptsd diagnosis since childhood, affecting my immediate economic devastation today. I should not be living this nightmare in theory but here I am; doing the best I can with what I have. The credit cards are maxed out summer of 2024.
</div>

</div>
<div>Historically, I come from a privileged past; parents whose careers as American Diplomats would render relative wealth to the children, as promised. The painful truth unfolded after the folks died. Complicated by my life-long struggles, a paltry retirement income, and contributing to my serious financial risk it is devastating to encounter what's taken place here in Spain that was never imagined.
</div>

<div>I would rather not have to justify my current situation in public. I find this embarrassing. My fraternal twin and an elder female sibling dealt this ugly card of hidden consequence to me. I always felt unsafe, and moreso, now than ever; I felt lonesome coming up, and looking back it's like a curse originated in a complicated toxic family environment. By 2019 this realization ultimately informed my decision to abandon life in the US and leave my country anonymously five years ago. These people know not of my whereabouts, and will never see me again. It's painful to share. I am grateful to state out loud, that my beloved daughter and I remain closely in contact; and as a widow I am truly ok, at peace being solo after decades of managing my complex ptsd, my heart is full as a loving mom.

<div>I decided in 2016 to leave CA and later OR as an economic refugee. The modest resources I did possess allowed me to make the big leap as my starting point a continent away. I arrived in the EU in June of 2019 with specific personal &amp; professional goals to work and to thrive; no retiring. I came over to make income here in Spain -- prior to the global pandemic of 2020. Today in 2024, my fiscal health is clearly in peril. While I mitigate incomprehensible immigration delays, and make small incremental steps with my pro bono attorney in Málaga, life's hitting me too hard, even a recent broken wrist on a public sidewalk in April with added unwarranted annoying situations, have taken a serious toll on me; circumstances beyond my personal control.

<div><strong>The other side of this Catch-22: </strong>

<div>On the brighter side, I chose an affordable place in the EU residing in Andalucía after two years in Northern Spain. Speaking, reading and writing four languages is particularly significant! (English, Spanish, French, Brazilian Portuguese and some basque) . Though I am understandably vulnerable on many fronts, added to my complex ptsd, the economic fall-out has left me out of my savings in 2024 and credit cards are maxed out in late june .

</div>
<div>Solo, self contained as I am, it's a terrifying situation. As the daughter of wealthy American Diplomats of relative economic privilege, the slight of hand I've experienced is most unfortunate, a tragic fact though painfully caught up with my pockets, now it's acceptance mode .
</div>

</div>
<div>Contextually, I can still say I made the right decision to move a continent away, able on many levels, such as spoken language skills; my predicament could be many times worse had I remained in the US, today -- I can affirm that I own my wit, my creativity, and native resilient intelligence, with a positive proactive will to forge my path forward. In general, this wisdom sense, though the past may never truly vanish; today, the maxed out credit cards make me feel not wise whatsoever, ironically. The financial crash I am living is striking, a consequential daily call to action, prayer too, to god, to you and to ask for a miracle!

<div>I am fortunate to be a native Spanish speaker in Spain. With my gritty determination I will not rest until I have my legal identity card for the EU in my hands in order to remain and to make income .

<div>My strength is that my value is me: four language polyglot, a well traveled world citizen, volunteering my skills locally, I always intended to create income from the start --I am a trained language teacher, an artist and photographer, professional art model, community collaborator, capable of varied employable scenarios. My pockets are basically empty, combined with an unfortunate personal family history that stings by impact at this period of my vulnerability and lived experience .

<div>This has been hard to write. We all know Charlie to be a true one of a kind soul. Many of us can recall a time when he touched us with his adventurous spirit, his passion for nature and history, his devotion to educate others and protect the desert, and the true deep love he has for his community. He is often recognized by his genuine kindness and forgiving heart, his wise-ass and puny sense of humor, his willingness to help when needs arise, his insistence on following a beautiful and creative vision to improve anything he can, and the intelligence and ingenuity he displays in everything he does. When Charlie does something, he does it right, and his neverending drive to be a helping hand and support to as many people as he can is notorious.

<div>At the end of March, Charlie was admitted to the hospital in critical condition. It has been a long few weeks receiving care in and out of the hospital. Charlie is experiencing liver failure relating to disease and infection. We also know his declining health has been aggravated by increasingly intense chronic pain, as well as the awful vehicle accident he endured last spring when he was T-boned in downtown Moab, and his beloved rebuilt truck was totaled.

<div>Charlie is currently home on hospice, being cared for by his closest family, his dog, and a now daily home health team. We are doing all we can to make him feel as comfortable, loved, and cherished as possible. We do not have an exact timeframe for the inevitable, but we are recognizing signs of decline. We are trying our best to accommodate the costs of care not covered by insurance, as well as his cremation and related expenses. Any remaining support that has been shared will be donated in Charlie's name to St. Mary's Hospital Rose Hill Hospitality House in Grand Junction, Colorado. Their donation funded services provided free housing that allowed family to be with Charlie almost consistently during the 9 long days he was receiving important care in the better hospital a few hours away from home.

<br /><br />Dear Friends,<br /><br />For those of you unfamiliar with this case, Kylen Schulte and Crystal Turner Beck went missing on 8/14/21. In spite of what we hope were the best efforts of the police and Sheriff departments, they were not able to find the girls. Friends, family and co-workers were distraught since they knew how out of character it would be for Ky or Crystal to miss work and not be in touch with anyone. <br /><br />Cindy Sue met the girls and Ky’s father Sean-Paul during the time that she owned an art supply store in Moab. Ky was still a teenager at this time so Cindy Sue felt very maternal towards her. They became fast friends due to the cheerful nature of the girls and Cindy Sue displayed some of Sean-Paul’s art in her store. Unfortunately, due to Covid causing a lack of business in 2020 she was forced to close her beautiful store. <br /><br />Cindy Sue was in touch with Sean-Paul from the beginning of the disappearance, and on 8/18/21, she decided to head for the mountains and look for the girls herself. Without knowing exactly where to look, she searched for over 5 hours, approaching people whenever she would see someone, in order to ask them if they had seen the girls. She was actually on the phone with Sean-Paul when she found their vehicle and eventually, found Kylen. After the police had secured the scene and found Crystal, Cindy Sue was able to rescue<font color="#333333"> their rabbit Ruth to safety, who had been in her cage without food or water for at least 5 days. We know how much it would have meant to Ky and Crystal to have Ruthie safe and removed from that horrible scene. </font><br /><br />When I spoke with Cindy Sue in mid-September, she told me that she has “cried every day for 30 days”. It is hard to imagine the level of trauma to find loved ones who are deceased, especially in such a way. <br /><br />Moab and the families of the girls are so incredibly lucky to have Cindy Sue be able to find them when she did, hopefully helping to preserve some precious evidence. <br /><br />It will be a long road to recovery but we ask that if your heart has been touched by Kylen and Crystal’s story, you would donate to this fund which will enable Cindy Sue to get some much needed healing. She also hopes to sell her home in Moab so that she can move to be closer to her children and grandchildren. We must offer sanctuary and assistance to those who trusted us to help them, as they tried to help themselves.<br /><br />Afghanistan has fallen into the hands of the Taliban. Women are being stoned and whipped for wearing ‘inappropriate’ clothes. The reprisals are happening now. Afghan women and men associated with foreign NGOs and aid programs are in extreme danger. <br /><br />Since 2013, Future Brilliance has worked alongside Afghan women and men to develop livelihoods in an effort to bring peace and prosperity to Kabul and remote Afghan villages. Since the Taliban took Kabul, our expert, crisis-management and humanitarian team has been working around the clock to facilitate the safe exodus of the most vulnerable Afghans, and to provide support for those who cannot leave. <br /><br /><strong>We will not abandon those who choose to stay behind. </strong><br /><br />This is a rapidly changing situation and we intend to adapt and respond to the changing circumstances. Our priorities currently are:<br /><br />   1. Safe passage and emergency evacuation of at-risk persons, with a focus on Afghan women and children. Funding orphanages and safehouses to protect the vulnerable women and children sheltering there.<br /> <br />Future Brilliance has worked with over 100 Afghan women and artisans across the country to deliver training in digital literacy, artisanal jewelry making, co-operative development and business skills. Our trainees have in turn trained or employed over 1,300 artisans, most of them in rural areas, and many of them women.<br /><br />The Afghans, in turn, placed their trust in us. Each one is now in the crosshairs for the ruthless payback they fear the Taliban will mete out when the last of the US and UK military planes leave Afghanistan.<br /><br />One of our employees, a young Afghan woman trapped in Kabul, contacted us today. She told us:<br /><br /><em> “We are in trouble. We don’t know what to do. We are so confused. We don’t know about our future, even about tomorrow. What will happen? Many people have left Afghanistan already. We went to the airport, but there was no one to take to the US. The Taliban fired at us with guns, and we returned home. Unfortunately, we did not get a visa to go to another country. I wish you to do something for me, like (help get us a) visa or airplane ticket to take me from here to come directly to the US or the UK. Otherwise I think there is no chance for me.”</em><br /><br /><em>“Today the Taliban shared news about their plans. They will do forced marriage with young Afghan girls. Sometimes I think, suppose it will happen, I will kill myself and never go with a Talib”.</em><br /><br /><em>“We are so scared. They fire with guns around the houses. They make us wear black scarves and black masks. The situation is so worse for us. We didn't even think it would happen like that. I don't know about our future. It looks like a horror movie for us and we don't know what to do...”</em><br /><br />Another young Future Brilliance trainee wrote to us today,<br /><br /><em>“You introduced me to the Digital Literacy training and we were given tablets by the end of the training. You are my only international contact right now and I’m reaching out because I know you have always helped girls and women and provided a lot of opportunities for them”. </em><br /><br /><em>“I’m in desperate need of help and I feel like I’m going to die in Kabul. Please help me. I can not stay here and be caged by the Taliban. I have big dreams. I want to do something good. I want to be free. Please, please, please help me. I have been crying nonstop for a few days. You are my only hope”.</em><br /><br />We have a profound responsibility towards these brave girls whose lives we have touched and whose hopes we have raised. We are trying to secure safe passage for them, so that no friend and ally is left behind on the battlefield, and to support those who cannot leave. Translators, journalists, photographers, designers, women who studied in our jewelry training program (or the men who allowed them to travel and study), teachers, administrators and our associates, will be a target for the new radical Islamist regime.<br /> <br />The situation is changing by the hour. Charter, government and military flights are continuing to evacuate asylum seekers. Our links with US and UK government and diplomatic channels, developed during 9 years of work in Afghanistan, will give us the ability to deploy contributions responsibly and effectively, streamlining the visa application process. <strong>We shall also do so transparently. Everyone who knows Mikey knows how much Oli means to him and how much he loves and cares for both of his cats so to hear the news that Oli had taken a turn for the worse in a very short time broke our hearts for him. They have been inseparable since the day he brought him home from an olive farm 16 years ago. <br />On June 23rd Oli started to act funny-  unable to walk, use the litter box, eat and drink water. When Mikey took Oli to VCA they informed  him that he has fluid in his lungs and abdomen due to cancer or heart failure. To properly diagnose him will cost upwards of $3000 and now Mikey is forced to make the decision no pet parent wants to be faced with, to try to treat him not knowing how long the treatment will give him or to sadly say goodbye. <br />The money raised on this gofundme will help give Mikey peace of mind knowing he can pursue either option. It will go towards vet bills- from VCA and the appointment at another vet for further opinions on 6/27, towards medications, treatments and in the worst case scenario towards at home euthanasia and the decisions following. <br />We all know how wonderful a friend Mikey is to everyone and how much losing pet hurts so please donate anything you can so we can help our friend make the decision that is best for Oli without being burdened by financial restrictions.

Your unique engaging personality charmed and warmed the hearts of everyone that had the pleasure of making your acquaintance.<br /><br />Elijah died from complications of his multiple sclerosis. Right until the end he was forging forward, relentless in his pursuit of finding a personal cure - not allowing the autoimmune disease to dictate the terms of his days. There were times when it brought him to his knees, but he always rose.<br /><br />Details of his unexpected last hour are not important, it suffices to just know he has departed. Carol, his devoted soulmate, was with Eli as the pain and frustrations of his mental and physical struggles were left behind. The greatest anguish he felt was his inability to be the whole person he once was and savor the role of devoted husband, father and friend.<br /><br />There will be an empty void in our hearts and lives that will never completely be erased. Yet we all know that twinkle in Eli’s eye - it will remain with us until the end of our days. Keep his presence and memory with you and whenever that smiling countenance comes to mind it will guide your way.<br /><br />The details of his 40 years that are significant are those that each of us personally experienced with him.  <br /><br />He enjoyed a wonderful existence and cherished knowing you.<br /><br />Celebration of Elijah’s life will happen when the vibrant colors of spring and summer return, as it is only just that the natural world he loved so much be in her full glory when we raise a toast to his honor.<br /><br />We love you dear one – may we emulate your strength and resolve to carry on - Namaste

<strong>Help Standing Rock Fight Voter Suppression in North Dakota. </strong><br /><br />North Dakota implemented a discriminatory voter ID law targeting Native Americans earlier this month. The District Court found the law had a disproportionate and discriminatory effect on Native voters, yet ultimately the Supreme Court allowed the new rule to take effect.<br /><br />Now, ND voters can’t use the voter ID they used in the primary because it doesn’t include their now-needed current residential address. Native Americans are disproportionately affected because a majority lack residential street addresses on account of their homes on the Reservation having P.O. Boxes instead of addresses, by no fault of their own.<br /><br />“This law clearly discriminates against Native Americans in North Dakota. Our voices should be heard and they should be heard fairly at the polls just like all other Americans,” says Chairman Mike Faith.<br /><br /><strong>We are raising money so that our voices can be heard in the upcoming election.
