<div>I met Shaz when he was visiting for a short time. Shaz went back to Kabul, committed to helping his country rebuild. Before the recent takeover by the Taliban, Shaz was working with the Afghan government. Now, he and his loved ones are in a very vulnerable position.

<div>Fearing for their safety, Shaz and his family fled and escaped to Tajikistan. He has already found a job opportunity abroad, but he must get there first. His current challenge is getting a visa to enter the country. His initial attempt was rejected. Now, he is left with only one option: apply for refugee status for himself and his family in a system currently overwhelmed by a flood of migrants from Afghanistan.

<div>Shaz and his family do not deserve this, no human beings do. I often think of the time when Shaz and his family were visiting the States, and my wife and I invited them to dinner. His wife and kids had just moved  to be with their father. I told my kids that neither Shaz’s wife nor their kids spoke any English, so they would have to find a way to communicate. But if you have kids, you know that language is no barrier to play. Within minutes, our house was full of laughter.

<div>Shaz’s wife, on the other hand, was quiet most of the evening so I wasn’t sure how she felt. At the end of the night, I told Shaz that I hoped his wife had enjoyed the visit. He told us that she was so surprised—she had never expected such warmth and generosity. But most of all, she was amazed by how we interacted with each other. It was not what she had expected. Shaz and his children have no future in Afghanistan. Although they are safe for the time being, their options are limited -- and they would be in danger if they were forced to return to Afghanistan. He has already been detained and extorted during his escape. Unless he can get refugee protection for himself and his family, they will be deported. And without financial support, while living in a country without legal status, his family of six will struggle to get through the winter.

On Friday, January 8th 2021, the world lost a saint and gained an angel: Muriel Eleanor Durley. Her presence will be sorely missed by all that knew and loved her. But by none more than her husband of 53 years, Rev.  Dr. Gerald Durley. As you would imagine, this will be an extreme period of transition for Dr. Durley as he works to reformulate everything in his life. This time period will undoubtedly be filled with grief, frustration, discovery and a host of other emotions. There has been such an outpouring of love from people throughout all walks of his life asking what they can do to help during this period of transition. Which is why I've created this fund. My vision for this fund is for him to be able to take care of all of his current bills and financial responsibilities in the near future. To remove the burden of cleanup or repair for anything related to his home or car. The ability to take a trip or two to clear his mind. And most importantly, a way for people to say thank you for all that he and my mother have meant to them throughout the years. In Memory of Muriel Durley

With a broken heart, I’m humbly asking for your support to send Arika Samantha Trim home to her native Tobago for her final rest, and help her parents transition as full-time caregivers for her son. On Tuesday, June 23, 2020, Arika died suddenly just one week after giving birth by emergency c-section to a baby boy at 30.5 weeks. He is doing well and in NICU for the foreseeable future. Sadly, we know this is a crisis in America that is not affected by education or income. According  to the CDC, Black women are three to four times more likely to experience a pregnancy-related death than white women. Black women are more likely to experience preventable maternal death compared with white women. Tragically, this crisis has now affected those of us who loved Arika. <img src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/49089062_1593044885843462_r.jpeg" alt="49089062_1593044885843462_r.jpeg" width="100%" media_type="3" /> Arika  was a dedicated public servant, who served honorably in the Obama Administration, both in the Office of First Lady Michelle Obama and at the U.S. Department of Agriculture. She then went on the U.S. House of Representatives' Committee on Education and Labor, and at the time of her death, was serving at the American Hospital Association, communicating the critical needs of the nation's hospitals during the COVID-19 pandemic. She cared deeply about school nutrition and ensuring that every person has access to affordable healthcare.  Arika was a 2008 graduate of Oxon Hill High School in Maryland and a 2012 graduate of Lee University in Tennessee. She LOVED to travel. She had impeccable style. She adored her large family and all of her friends, and, of course, her native Tobago.  With the blessing of her mother, this GoFundMe is set up to assist the family with all of the unexpected costs they will incur as they prepare to celebrate her life and carry her across seas to lay her to rest. Coronavirus Rent Relief Fund

This summer I am traveling to Malaga, Spain for a month long study abroad trip. While abroad, I will be taking a couple of courses that cater to my minor in Spanish.  I will also be going on excursions around the city and to surrounding countries. The total costs of the trip is $3500 and I have already taken care of a part of it. If there is anything, finance wise, that you all can contribute, I would very much appreciate it!

Education was so deeply important to Michael - as a son of educators, a proud graduate of UC Berkeley, a lawyer with an LLM from Georgetown - we want to help ensure that Wali’s future is as limitless as Michael’s imagination and his belief in education’s ability to change the world. Michael had such a profound and powerful influence on everyone he touched during his journey. All of us lucky enough to know him were inspired by his intellect and made stronger and better through his love and his friendship. He brought us so much joy. Through his battle with cancer, he showed us a deep reservoir of strength and perseverance. It was his quiet dedication and grace that helped all of us who were standing with him. And in his marriage to Sahar, he found the perfect partner. A brilliant woman who lifted him up, who made him the best version of himself, who knew him so deeply. And a woman whom we all owe so much to during these past few years. She has brought all of us so much strength and courage and love through treatment after treatment. Her love inspired all of us and I know Michael drew so much of his strength from her and their son, Wali. Michael was overjoyed to become a father and I don’t know if I have ever seen him laugh harder, or smile with more pride, or open his heart more than when I saw him with his little Wali.

December 1, 2017 will begin my 11th month of unemployment, definitely not for lack of trying.  Daily, I apply for jobs and pray. I also circulate my resume, follow-up on referrals and network. My emergency fund and all financial resources are depleted. I am experiencing one of the most difficult times in my life. My health insurance, if not paid by December 1, 2017, will be cancelled. I also have to pay other major expenses (e.g. mortgage) which are 2-3 months past due. It has been said: the darkest hour is right before day, I believe that. There's also a saying: light is at the end of the tunnel, I'm beginning to see light, yet I've not made it to the end. In the interim, I am asking for your help to reach my goal of $7,000.00 as soon as possible. Our daughter Yetunde is a talented artist who was recently awarded three Gold Keys by Scholastic Art and Writing.  With this honor comes the opportunity to attend some of our nation's top summer art programs. Apples and Oranges Fresh Market

Vernon Maurice Stephens, a husband, father, son, brother, and friend passed away on Friday, April 11, 2014 in Jacksonville, Florida. He leaves behind a wife, Andrea, and two young children Skyla (10) and Vernon Campbell (6). Vernon was heading to meet friends when his vehicle broke down on the Mathew's Bridge. Shortly after breaking down, Vernon's vehicle was struck and he was propelled over the railing and knocked into the water. After an intense search, family and friends from across the country gathered in an effort to search and show support scouring the St. Johns River hoping to find Vernon. Vernon's body was discovered by a fisherman at approximately 7:15 a.m. on Monday, April 14, 2014, three miles from the accident site. Vernon, a graduate of Morehouse College in Atlanta and Andrea, a graduate of Auburn University and member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. would have celebrated 11 years of marriage on May 3, 2014. Over the last two years, Vernon has been the sole breadwinner for his household as his wife Andrea pursued a degree in nursing. She recently graduated Valedictorian of her class and had just started a new job one week prior to this unfortunate accident. Vernon is an amazing father and his children adore him. The light from his smile is reflected in theirs, and his chest would burst with pride at even the smallest of achievements. Vernon consistently challenged his children to be better, do better, and think bigger. Through Skyla and Campbell (Camp as we call him) his legacy will continue because he has laid the foundations of self-awareness, family, kindness and community within them. Although they are sure to mourn the passing of their father we will not let his spirit fade. We are asking for donations to help support Vernon's wife and children with funeral costs as well as any other financial needs.
