<font color="#333333">Welcome, kind soul. Thank you for being here. <br /><br />I’m Melissa, and I’ve organized this fundraiser for my friend Sabreen and her family in Gaza. All funds collected will be sent to her securely via bank transfer and receipts are available. <br /><br />Sabreen, her husband Osama, and their five children, Mira, 18, Muhammad, 17, Tala, 14, Youssef, 12, and Hamad, 6, have been displaced multiple times. They’re originally from Beit Hanoun in the north, but are now in Deir al-Balah, crowded seven to a small tent. <br /><br />They desperately need money for food and medical treatment. All of the children have rashes with infection. Hamad has unexplained frequent nose bleeds. Sabreen has hepatitis and a broken finger and toe. Osama has high blood pressure made worse by the conditions and lack of medication. Everyone is malnourished. Hunger is constant. <br /><br />The bombing and shooting never stop. The daughter of one of their neighbors was shot in the neck inside their tent. Terror is another constant. <br /><br />Our initial goal is only $3000, and will be used for food, water, medication, and a new, portable tent. Once their current situation is more stable we’ll raise money for evacuation. <br /><br />Sabreen’s story:<br /><br />I am the engineer Sabreen. I am 35 years old. I married Osama and we lived beautiful days and gave birth to three boys and two girls. Praise be to God. We lived wonderful days in our wonderful home because the life of the 2014 war came and destroyed my home in which I got married and my beautiful memories. My husband and I built a new house that we built with love and I completed my studies. I am a diligent engineer and excelled in my work then thunderous war of 2023 came and destroyed my dreams. It destroyed my future and the future of my children. My dream is an engineering office and the beginning of my project. Unfortunately, it is all gone. My children are displaced and we are displaced. We lived in tents. We lived in severe cold and heat, lack of water and food, and lack of safety. In my country, we lived difficult days in all senses. <div>I am Nour, I am 24 years old, and my husband is Ghassan. I got married when I was young. I have two children, a boy and a girl. A boy named Ahmed is 7 years old, and my beautiful daughter Sila is 4 years old.

<div>We were in a beautiful house, me and my wonderful children, before this fierce war came, destroying my home, my memories, my dreams, my children’s dreams, my children’s memories, and destroyed my future. My children and my young son’s dream of going to school and my little girl who was deprived of going to kindergarten. Unfortunately, it was all gone and destroyed. My children were displaced. We were displaced. We lived in Balkhim. We lived in cold.

Since my release my parents passed away as well as my fiance, who I recently lost to cancer.

<div>I recently lost my job that I loved, making windows for Cardinal Glass. My health has taken a bad turn when I was diagnosed with severe COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease). COPD is is a constriction to your airway to breathe. I have it severely. I go through 2 rescue inhalers a month which is not good. I can walk from my bedroom to the kitchen and be gasping for breath. Some days are better than others. It changes your entire life. I am very hyper even at 59 and that makes it worse because my mind wants to do things but my body won't allow it. I have a appointment with my doctor next week and we will try to get some sort of oxygen going for me. My regular doctor can't do anything, but the breathing specialist will know better how to treat this.

<div>I can no longer work and had to file for disability. I have sold everything of worth that I have to try to make ends meet. <div>Michael Graham served 14 years on death row in Louisianna for a crime he had nothing to do with. He writes: "When I got out I moved back to Virginia, got a job and was living my life. But my health has taken a turn for the worse and I had to file for disability. I am currently unemployed because of my disability and am struggling to keep my head above water. I have been selling off all my belongings just to make rent. Any help would be greatly appreciated."

I met Mrs. Theresa Godfrey during the summer of 2018 at the Women on the Rise nonprofit organization where she was an advocate for criminal justice reform. I interviewed Theresa for my documentary "Harriet's Daughters." Theresa openly shared her remarkable story with me of how she went from serving a 2008 prison sentence to changing her life and working for criminal justice reform. I remember feeling both inspired by and proud of this woman who went from suffering from drug addiction to dedicating her life to helping other women avoid making the same mistake.

<div>I am writing today to fight for Mrs. Theresa and her family. On June 13 Theresa’s landlord informed her that she and her family will need to vacate their home by July 15. The Godfreys have lived in their Atlanta home since 2012 and were expecting to renew their lease on June 30. Now they are left with having to prepare to move 11 years' worth of memories in a few short weeks with no idea where they will go.

<div>For years, Theresa had a successful cleaning company. Her husband Nathan worked as a truck driver from 1978 - 2018 when he had an injury that led to him having to get hip replacement surgery. During the pandemic, Theresa was unable to continue running her cleaning business and because of Nathan’s disability, he was unable to continue working as a truck driver. Additionally, Theresa fell and broke her hip, which prevented her from being able to work for a while. Their son, Andrew moved in to help out his parents but has since lost his job. The family used up their savings during the pandemic and Nathan used his 401K to pay the rent. He has faced ageism when trying to find work, which has prevented him from being able to support his family.

<div>The Godfreys have always been who their family members could turn to in their time of need. Today, the Godfreys are the ones in need of help.
</div>

<div>Their goal is to raise $20,000. This will cover three months of rent and utilities in a new home, car notes, car insurance, moving expenses, and medical fees.
</div>

<div>Sadly, the pandemic and unemployment completely wiped out their savings.

<div>Theresa is 68 years old, Nathan is 65, and their son Andrew is 35 and has to go to dialysis three times a week. It has been difficult for them to recover from the blunt effects of the pandemic, medical setbacks, and unemployment.

<div>Their current leasing agreement states that the landlord must give them a 60-day notice before asking them to move out. Unfortunately, this did not happen. Now they are left with no money and nowhere to go.

I was tired of not knowing when I was going to be served with eviction so I called my landlord directly to plead for a little more time to pay the back rent and to have an additional 3 months' extension so that my husband could have his hip replacement done and time to heal. I wasn’t expecting what came next, which left me with a bad feeling in the pit of my stomach.</em>
</div>

<div><em>How would you feel if you were told that after living in your home for 10 years and talking with the owner on June 13th, he would not be renewing your lease on June 30th because he wanted to make upgrades so that he could raise the rent and that you and your family would have to vacate your home by July 15th?</em>

<div><em>All because he wants to remodel the home so that he can charge more money and get a bigger profit. His words, not mine.</em>
</div>

<div><em>At 68 years old, I am unable to retire. I worked a full-time job as a canvasser and on December 16th I was a part of a massive layoff because the Georgia Elections had been decided. In March I was hospitalized 3 times due to diabetic complications, which included a 5-day hospital stay. Our $3,100 savings was hit with a $2,800 truck transmission repair bill that left me with no transportation for 42 days from mid-January to March.</em>
</div>

<div><em>With my son's car needing tires and brakes, we decided that something would not be paid with March’s income. Using Uber to get groceries along with the high cost of attending doctor’s appointments ate up our savings. To add insult to injury, the truck was finally repaired and had to be picked up otherwise there would be a daily storage fee added to the repair cost. So the decision was made that we would pay the rent late and add $120 because if we had the truck back we could at least do some light hauling with our regular construction site partners. Little did we know that they had gotten some new folks to do our side hustle. Not even the Pandemic had hit us this hard. All that I could think of was that we were going to get evicted and then where would we be?</em>

<div><em>The eviction never came, we were able to pay our rent on time but remained unable to catch up which was $1,320. The other dagger in my back was because I lost my job I couldn’t pay my truck note, which was $732 a month and I was 3 months behind. I had to pay that so it didn’t get repossessed; living in a rural area with no bus service, how would we get to our mandatory doctor’s appointments or buy our food without a vehicle? We knew what vehicle repossession would cause because we went through it during the pandemic.</em>

<div><em>My husband was scheduled for hip replacement surgery, which was originally scheduled for July and has now been postponed till August. This denies him any relief from severe pain with each step he takes. Our son who is also on disability with chronic kidney disease takes dialysis 3 times a week; he also needs his car’s air conditioning fixed. He often comes home with heat exhaustion. This is very hard on him and this weakens him even more by having to go to his treatments in the heat of the day, the estimate accepted is $875.00.</em>

<div><em>My 62-year-old sister also lives with me and suffers from PTSD, she has a very hard time with change."</em>

Theresa Godfrey & Family, Just Lost Their Home

<div>On February 2nd 2023 my close friend Kelsey (32 years old) was diagnosed with two forms of breast cancer. Kelsey is a single mother to two small boys, 3 and 6 years old. She is going to need all of the help she can get, as she is doing everything on her own.

<div>On February 28th 2023 Kelsey had a double mastectomy where they thought they got all of the cancer, she was initially told no chemo. However, this has radically changed. She went in for a scan on April 27th where they found a 1.7 CM mass on her liver. The Dr's have also now confirmed that she will have to do chemotherapy, hormone blockers, and aromatase inhibitors. She is doing everything she can to get the best treatments with the best doctors. Kelsey's treatment is going to cost 25,000 per month!

<div>Kelsey needs help with travel expenses for treatments in Texas and Arizona, she needs help with childcare costs, medical costs, and she may not be able to maintain her job as she goes through treatments. <div>Two weeks ago as he was setting out cones in the median, on the road in front of the church, a car going 50mph hit him, pinning him against a parked church van. He suffered a broken fibula in one leg and a compound fracture in the other, meaning his bone broke through his skin. As a diabetic recovery is that much harder for him. He is in extreme pain. While my father remains in the hospital under care my mother has not left his side. As his eldest child and mother of 2 under 2 my family is now relying on me. And I want to do everything in my power to support my family and would like to call on my community for that extra support.

<div>My mom has been at the hospital EVERYDAY since it happened. She said to me “In the 23 years we’ve been together and ALL the things I’ve been through, he has never left my side, so I’m not leaving his.” The only reason she hasn’t been sleeping at the hospital is because in the Trauma Intensive Care Unit the visiting hours are from 8-8.

<div>So I’m doing my best as a mother of 2 under 2 to make sure that his transition into a new lifestyle is as smooth as possible.

<div>5 days ago my beautiful mother passed away. I have had no support from immediate family members and I’m currently in a health crisis. The way that she passed was incredibly cruel. They left my mother alone in a room to die by herself. No food, no water, no comfort.

<div>They told me comforting her was selfish and that I should’ve left her to choke to death. I couldn’t do that to my mother. She would’ve never let us go like that.

<div>I refused to leave her bedside and my own BROTHERS called the police on me.

<div>She died that night. Alone. 
</div>

</div>
<div>My body and my health went down the same day. My arms and legs have gone numb and it looks as if I have the same disease that took my fathers life. I am working with doctors to figure it out but I am terrified.

<div>I have no one to depend on and I have to move immediately for my safety. I am not safe around my brothers. They are literally taking everything and I have nothing left to remember my mother.

<div>Ive experienced years of abuse at the hands of family members and with my mother no longer here it’s only increasing.

<div>I don’t ask for help. But please. I won’t survive this if I don’t get any help.

<div>I do not want to be a slave nor a sharecropper. No one does. As you may or may not know, we rent the space at Harriett’s Bookshop from a woman who decided to give us a chance when no one else would.

<div>However our lease is up in JULY and instead of renewing it for another 2 years, wed’d prefer to OWN our own building for Harriett’s Bookshop. 
</div>

<div>As it stands, I am a modern day sharecropper bringing energy and investing money in a location that I cannot pass down to my children. 
</div>

<div>But we can change that.

<div>The new permanent location would give us a mission focused bookshop with an 1800s residential feel that includes multiple floors of private book nooks, indoor/outdoor green space, meeting rooms, and a state of the art third floor apartment which will be used to house a visiting rotation of authors, artists, and activists.

A Home for Harriett’s Bookshop

<strong>Greetings to you all,<br /><br />I hope this note finds you doing well.<br /><br />I am humbly writing to ask for your generous support as I struggle through an urgent housing situation.<br /><br />I live in an apartment building that is owned/managed by a prominent, mostly White social justice organization here in Philadelphia.<br /><br />There are three tenants in the building, one White/Puerto Rican woman and the other two of us are Black women.  We were told in June by the leader of the organization that the situation here would be “in transition”, meaning they would soon begin to only admit as tenants those that are participants in the organization’s programs and we the two Black women would have to move out since we are not program participants.  When we asked when this transition would begin and be complete, we were told, “I’m not sure, but not soon, sometime in 2019.”<br /><br />Unfortunately, something changed in a matter of approximately six weeks and in a letter dated August 1, the other Black woman was given a 30 day eviction notice with no explanation for a reason why.  I have asked the two leaders of the organization twice why this was done this way and I only got stonewalled, with no real reason given.  The other Black woman has never been late with her rent and has never caused any problems.  She has lived here for eight years and has contributed tremendously to the furnishings of the entire building and to programs that have helped the surrounding community.  She is well liked and respected by many of our neighbors.<br /><br />As we all know, it is extremely difficult, stressful even, to find safe, affordable housing here in this city and 30 days eviction notice is simply not enough time and is very unfair, especially coming from an organization that prides itself as a strong advocate and supporter of affordable housing and other social justice issues.<br /><br />As a Black woman that has lived here now for three years, this situation is stressful for me as well.  Black women are not work mules where our labor, gifts, talents and ideas are to be used and then we are discarded like Monday morning trash.  I am now expected to assist them with their community programs, even though that was never discussed as a condition for me to live here.  And no, they do not require a lease but we did have to sign an agreement on June 12 regarding the “transition and restructuring.”  <br /><br />At this point, I do not feel safe or welcome here; I am sad, disappointed and yes angry that my house mate has been treated in this way and I have no intention to stay here and possibly have such a sudden, unwarranted eviction thrown at me as well.  This situation has increased my existing anxiety and when this first happened, for several days I had a nervous stomach.  I am even thinking about starting therapy again.<br /><br />So I respectfully ask for your $$$ support as I seek to move out as soon as possible.  Like many of you, I work a low wage job and I don’t have enough money saved to afford to move.  I am now trying to raise $2,500 to afford a new place to live, all moving expenses, storage, paying two or three people to help me, etc.  I hope I can get 100 people to donate (or loan) $25 to help me do this as quickly and with as little stress as possible.  I desperately want to be out of here in 60 days or less.<br /><br />Your $$$ support and suggestions for a new place to live are greatly appreciated.  If you would like to discuss this further, please contact me at your earliest convenience.<br /><br />Thanks and solidarity,<br /><br />Asantewaa Nkrumah-Ture</strong>

URGENT!  Desperate to move!

<p>Hey! As some of you may know, for the past 3 months, I've been struggling with some serious health issues. I wanted to explain a bit about what's been happening with me and ask for some help.
</p>

<p>On March 2nd 2018, I was hospitalized with some pretty terrifying physical and cognitive/neurological symptoms (confusion, loss of speech, hallucinations etc.). Ultimately, I was diagnosed with a form of viral Meningitis, a collapsed lung and swelling on my brain and spinal cord as well as a handful of additional medical complications. After spending 2 months in the hospital and rehab, I was discharged and now I am back on the road to recovery and healing.
</p>

<p>To be frank, I am asking for financial contributions because I have to. When I got out of the hospital, I was unable to walk, I am currently rehabbing and gaining that ability back but I cannot work (and haven't been able to in nearly 3 months!). Not only has this been personally traumatic, it has caused stress on my partner and my Mom, both of whom have sacrificed physically and financially to give me the kind of emotional and material support that has quite literally helped save my life. 
</p>

<p>I'm asking for $3000 dollars to help cover the costs of medical bills and rent. Please contribute if you can. For my folks in the Philadelphia area,  Sunday, May 27th some of my beautiful friends and family are throwing me a benefit BBQ  at the Sankofa House in West Philly. On the evening of November 27, 2016 my families world was flipped upside down. There was a fire that destroyed everything in our home and killed our beloved cat named Star. My family is my stregnth, my love, my world and my everything and no words can truly describe the pain I feel as we try to put the pieces back together and start the process of rebuilding our lives.<br />Every single person in this world is facing some sort of trial or test. There may be some facing trials in education, others in their jobs, some in their businesses, and still more facing problems with family or friends. I remain positive despite this year's tests. I remain positive because my family relies on me to push through any adversity and find a way for us to come out victorious. Although difficult, I'm starting to truly believe that it's not my job to ask why God has given me the undaunting task of rebuilding our entire life, but instead to believe that the course laid out is part of a plan for greatness that need not be questioned. I believe. We're also built for this. In his image we were created, and we will rely on his strength, power and resilience to forge ahead into a new beginning. 2016 has been a tumultuous year, but I yell to the sky, BRING IT ON 2017, I SERVE A MIGHTY GOD AND I AIN'T SCARED OF NOTHING!!
