In December, our lives changed forever when my boyfriend, Don, was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. Since then, he has been fighting every day with incredible strength and determination, facing chemotherapy, radiation, appointments, treatments, and all of the uncertainty that comes with a cancer diagnosis. Unfortunately, our journey has recently taken an even more difficult turn. Last week, Don suffered a fall and broke his hip. While he was being evaluated, doctors discovered a 2 cm tumor on his brain. He now needs brain surgery, followed by continued chemotherapy and radiation treatments. This has been an overwhelming and frightening time for both of us. Don is already fighting one of the hardest battles imaginable, and now he is facing surgery and an even longer road to recovery. After his hip injury, he also needs help getting back on his feet and regaining his strength and independence.
<br>
<br>
 We have looked into every resource and assistance program we can find, but unfortunately, the help available to us is limited. Even with insurance, there are still significant expenses that aren't fully covered. The costs of copays, medical care, transportation to and from appointments, medications, and everyday needs are quickly adding up. We are asking for help so that we can focus on what matters most right now: helping Don fight, heal, and get back on his feet. Any money raised will go toward medical copays and expenses, transportation to treatments and appointments, and the additional costs that come with his recovery and ongoing cancer treatment. If you are able to donate, no amount is too small, and every contribution will mean more to us than we can put into words. If you're unable to donate, sharing this fundraiser, keeping Don in your thoughts and prayers, or simply passing his story along would mean just as much. Don has a long and difficult road ahead, but we are not giving up. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts to everyone who takes the time to read our story, helps in any way they can, and stands beside Don during this fight.

Help Don Beat Cancer

<div>Recently we discovered I have cancer. So far I'm asymptomatic and I will be starting chemotherapy and radiation beginning next month. This treatment requires me to take 3 months leave from work and Bryan will also need to take time off from work because he is exposed to germs and infectious agents working in a school and my immune system will be vulnerable because of the treatment.

</div>

<div>I greatly appreciate any donation you can make to help cover the expenses of rent, groceries and monthly bills. Thank you for your generosity.

</div>

Kyle’s Cancer Support

<div>You all know our pup Muggsy Parker Schow and love him as much as we do.

</div>

<div><br />

</div>

<div>For nearly three years now he has dealt with a chronic cough and lung infection ― the sort of thing some veterinarians might too quickly shrug off as “chihuahua issues,” the most repeated ones being “enlarged heart” or “collapsed trachea.”

</div>

<div><br />

</div>

<div>We wanted second opinions, then thirds. We wanted to be definitive. We wanted him to have the absolute best care available ― which means multiple X-rays and very expensive tests.

</div>

<div><br />

</div>

<div>Turns out he doesn't have an enlarged heart or a collapsed trachea. But we had to find that out from an actual dog cardiologist, and:

</div>

<div><br />

</div>

<div>Radiographs with interpretations = $500+.

</div>

<div><br />

</div>

<div>A basic echocardiogram = $1000+.

</div>

<div><br />

</div>

<div>Attendant expenses, meds, cultures + analysis, diagnostics, hospitalization and tests run it up = $2000+.

</div>

<div><br />

</div>

<div>Bronchoscopy under anesthesia + catheter = $5000+.

</div>

<div><br />

</div>

<div>And so on. Muggsy had a camera in his lungs on February 6th. His internal medicine doctor has diagnosed him with Dynamic Principal Bronchus Collapse, which the new regimen of meds will help significantly.

</div>

<div><br />

</div>

<div>We're not going to stop, because Muggsy.

</div>

<div><br />

</div>

<div>We realize this is probably the absolute WORST time to mount a fundraiser. But it's for Muggsy.

</div>

<div><br />

</div>

<div>ANY amount, small or large, can help with prescriptions, doc appointments and all the dozens of fees that can accrue, even given the godsend of pet insurance. Our fellow pet people already know how costs can mount.

</div>

<div><br />

</div>

<div>We decided to do this fundraiser when the bills hit the $10,000 mark.

</div>

<div><br />

</div>

<div>But $5 is just as appreciated, both by us and certainly by our extremely photogenic pup, who you'll be hearing from, we promise.

</div>

<div><br />

</div>

<div>Thanks so much for reading this.

Help Steve Coulter & Heather Varnell After LA Wildfires

<div>Hi all,

</div>

<div><br />

</div>

<div>I am so devastated to let you know that my brother and his family have completely lost their home and belongings in the Eaton Canyon Fire.

</div>

<div><br />

</div>

<div>Matt, Brynna and their two daughters (Ella and Lilly) lived in their home for 18 years. Their youngest, Lilly, took her first steps there, and it was the heart of their family life. They lost everything save for the bags they could pack into their cars the night they were evacuated. They have each other, thank God, and will survive and rebuild - but today they are devastated and grieving the loss of their home, their cherished mementos, their sanctuary, childhood works of art, and pencil marks on the doorway for the girls’s growing heights and too many things to count. They will get through this - and part of that process is that they are accepting help from friends and loved ones.

</div>

<div><br />

</div>

<div>This is a time when we can come together as a community to offer our support and help them rebuild what was lost. Any contribution you make will go directly to helping the Venne family get back on their feet as they navigate this incredibly difficult time. Sharing this GoFundMe page and its link on your social media is also a great way to spread the word and extend the reach of our collective support.

<div><br />

</div>

<div>Thank you for your love, prayers and generosity!

</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Gabe's talent in special effects made this home very magical over the 8 years they lived there. Their pool was a place classmates gathered to swim and play. The upright piano in the sunroom was perfect, along with reading nooks they built, and cozy spots for Nico the German Shepherd to rest.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>The Altadena community is SO grateful for all the love and support already given to the many families who lost homes. For those who are able, <strong>support for this family to get through starting over would mean so much.</strong>

<p><b>Penelope passed away Saturday, April 18, 2026 ... </b>
</p><br />
<p><b>19-Year-Old Penelope Horner Fought Stage 4 Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC)</b>
</p><br /><img src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/84216641_1731780802393614_r.png" alt="84216641_1731780802393614_r.png" /><br />
<p><b>Our Story</b>
</p><br />
<p>In 2018, at just 11 years old, Penelope first battled and overcame Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC) through surgery. However, in August 2024, our world shattered when we learned that this aggressive form of liver cancer had returned as Stage 4 HCC, the most advanced stage of the disease.
</p><br />
<p>Hepatocellular Carcinoma is the most common type of primary liver cancer. What makes Penelope's case particularly rare and challenging is her young age and the aggressive nature of the cancer's return.
</p><br />
<p>Stage 4 HCC means the cancer has mestacized (spread) beyond the liver to other parts of her body, including her lungs and lymph nodes, making treatment more complex.
</p><br />
<p>In April 2024, Penelope started experiencing unusual weakness. Medical tests soon revealed severe anemia, with her blood counts at dangerously low levels (5, compared to the normal level of 11). Despite receiving blood transfusions and working with specialists from April through July, answers remained unknown.
</p><br />
<p>On August 15th, Penelope experienced severe pain leading to an emergency room visit, where a CT scan discovered heartbreaking news: her HCC had aggressively returned. The cancer now surrounds an artery in her liver, making surgery impossible - a condition known as unresectable HCC. Additionally, she has swollen lymph nodes throughout her body and metastatic spots in her lungs, confirming the Stage 4 diagnosis.
</p><br /><br />
<p><b>Current Situation</b>
</p><br />
<p>Since August, Penelope has shown incredible resilience through intensive chemotherapy treatments. Known for her beautiful long hair, she's faced the physical challenges of treatment with remarkable strength - even as she lost all her hair and her weight dropped to just 83 pounds.
</p><br />
<p>This advanced stage requires the combination of different treatment plans to target both the primary liver tumor as well as the cancer that has spread to other areas. After the first round of treatment showed neither growth nor shrinkage in November's scans, her doctors have revised her plan to include additional medications. While we remain hopeful this new approach will prove more effective, we must also be prepared for more difficult decisions ahead, including hospice care.
</p><br />
<p>Chris stays home with Penelope, providing the constant care and support she needs through the intense side effects of treatment such as fatigue, nausea, and the physical toll of fighting this aggressive cancer. Amanda continues to work full-time to maintain the family's insurance and income, and although her employer has graciously given her the option to work from home, with Penelope's weakened condition and significant weight loss, having both parents' undivided attention is incredibly important. The toll this kind of diagnosis takes on parents is incredible as well. Being able to rest will help them continue to fight this battle while spending precious time together as a family.

<p><b>How Your Support Will Help</b>
</p><br />
<p>While our family is fortunate that Penelope has insurance coverage for her medical treatments, there are numerous additional expenses that insurance doesn't cover. Your donations will help with:
</p><br />
<ul>
<li>Lost income support to allow Amanda to take extended time off work to be with her daughter, complementing Chris's full-time care
</li>
<li>Transportation to and from frequent medical appointments and specialized treatment centers
</li>
<li>Daily living expenses for the family, as they're currently relying on a single income
</li>
<li>Specialized nutritional supplements and dietary needs to help combat weight loss and maintain strength
</li>
<li>Creating meaningful experiences and fulfilling some of Penelope's wishes during this critical time
</li>
<li>Additional comfort items not covered by insurance
</li>
<li>Emergency expenses that may arise
</li>
<li>Support for activities that bring Penelope joy and comfort
</li>
<li>Accommodations near treatment centers when needed
</li>
</ul><br />
<p><b>Fundraising Goal: $50,000</b>
</p><br />
<p>This goal takes into account:
</p>
<ul>
<li>Income supplement to allow Amanda to take necessary time off work without financial strain
</li>
<li>Support for the family's daily needs while operating on a single income
</li>
<li>Transportation and living expenses, including potential travel to specialized treatment centers
</li>
<li>Specialized nutrition and care needs
</li>
<li>Support for creating special memories and experiences for Penelope
</li>
<li>Emergency fund for unexpected needs
</li>
</ul><br />
<p>Your generosity will help ease the financial burden on Chris and Amanda, allowing them to focus on what matters most.
</p><br />
<p><b>A Message of Hope and Gratitude</b>
</p><br />
<p>Every donation brings hope and support to Penelope and our whole family. Stage 4 HCC is an incredibly brutal diagnosis, but Penelope faces each day with determination and grace that leaves us in awe.
</p><br />
<p>The pain of watching a child battle such a serious illness is beyond description. But we refuse to lose hope. Our faith in God sustains us through these difficult days, and we find strength in knowing we're not alone. With your help and prayers, we can give Penelope and her parents the support they desperately need right now. Every contribution, no matter the size, means the world to our family.
</p><br />
<p>Thank you for your kindness, prayers, and generosity. Your support means everything to Penelope, Chris, Amanda, and our entire family. God Bless.

<div>John Brennan lost everything in a house fire this week. If you are a fan of Troma or The Last Drive In with Joe Bob Briggs you know John and you’ve been entertained by him. If you went to a Joe Bob Jamboree, you probably met him in person and talked with him, laughed with him and sung his songs with him.

Help John Brennan Rebuild After Fire

<div>Hi Everyone,
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>If you know Ashley, you know that she has spent most of her adult life raising awareness and funds for others in need. From book drives, to fundraisers, to auctions, to spending nights beside people in the hospital... She always shows up and puts her whole self behind supporting others.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>If you know her well, you know that she fought a long battle to overcome an extremely rare cancer 20 years ago. That is the big driving force behind her always choosing to champion and support others through their struggles.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Within the past few weeks she began having extreme vision and hearing problems which led to her being diagnosed with Hydrocephalus. We've also learned that the life saving treatments from her cancer journey are what caused this condition over time. She's had two more brain surgeries this week and is now, hopefully, beginning a path towards recovery. It will be a long road for her to get fully back to her normal, cynical-with-a-heart-of-gold, self that we all love and cherish.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>The cost of her long hospital stay and a necessary 1-2 month leave from work is a financial burden we want to support her through. If you are able, any donations are greatly appreciated. Words of encouragement, jokes to make her laugh and love are also very welcome.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Thank you!

<div>First off, that right there is Phryne (As in Fisher not the 4th Century BC Greek courtesan). In case you hadn't noticed she's a dog. She's a sweet dog. Too goddamn smart and occasionally a pain in the ass like the fictional detective who is her namesake.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>No, she is not dying. We are, however, trying to keep her in kibble.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>This is the sort of post I'd hoped to never have to make. Between family health issues, getting ghosted or rejected for jobs, writing gigs evaporating or just too small to make much difference, I am flat fucking broke and could use a hand.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Over the last few years we've exhausted our savings, including a 401K and an IRA, just to keep afloat, deal with health crises (getting old sucks), deaths in the family, and a ton of stupid little shit that has just kept piling on.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>We're scraping by month after month, living off credit cards, loans from friends and family, slashing and burning anything optional. It just isn't enough. We're behind on utilities, medical bills, and now we're dealing with a rent increase, a broken tooth, and vet visits.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>I hate that this is where we're at. I don't judge people in similar circumstances because shit happens and life is never simple, but boy howdy am I judging myself. I haven't been out of work for this long and I'm not hopeful it's going to change any time soon.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>$15K would solve a multitude of problems. At the very least it would keep us afloat a few months or cover some shit that needs to be handled.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Do I expect to raise that much? Absolutely not. But any amount will help.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Any assistance is greatly appreciated. If you can spare a dime or signal boost it would make a big difference.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Thank you.
</div>

Hey, Buddy Can You Spare A Dime?

<div>My name is Rachel, and I hate asking for help, <strong>but when it comes to my children—I'll do anything. </strong>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>I have tried to pull myself up by my own boostraps, <strong>but the straps long ago snapped and there's nothing left to pull. </strong>Every time I think I've gotten us back on track, the car needs to go in the shop, the washing machine breaks, or a new emergency crops up.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div><strong>The past few years have been brutal for us health-wise. </strong>There have been EKGs, MRIs, blood draws, therapies, tests, and evaluations—and that's just the children! We have over $6,000 in medical debt with another $10,000 coming with my medically-neccessitated jaw surgery (insurance won't cover it), plus the credit cards from trying to keep up on the payment plans. <strong>It's too much.</strong>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>We are on payment plans for as many of the bills as we can, but some facilities don't allow payment plans and demand payment in full at the time of service. I have taken on extra hours and clients, we use the electricity and water as little as possible, we have cut everything that could be cut.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>We don't eat out. We don't go out. We don't see friends.<strong> We're still drowning</strong>.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>I know this is a tough time for everyone, but if you're able to help, we would really, really appreciate it. Again, <strong>I <em>hate</em> asking for help, but we need it. </strong>Thank you, in advance.

Help Our Family - Medical Debt

<div>Hi friends, family, colleagues, fellow community members and beyond. My name is Mackenzie Jackson, the daughter of Sonnie Jackson who is currently in the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU) at Inova Fairfax for his treatment of congestive heart failure. I am writing this post to share Sonnie's story and how the past two months have impacted the trajectory of his life.

</div>

<div><br />

</div>

<div>Some of you may wonder how this could happen to a seemingly healthy 55-year-old. The onset of Sonnie's congestive heart failure began years ago. After his youngest daughter, MaryJane, was born in 2015, he was diagnosed with congestive heart failure. Congestive heart failure is a serious condition in which the heart doesn’t pump blood as efficiently as it should. Despite its name, heart failure doesn’t mean that the heart has literally failed or is about to stop working. Rather, it means that the heart muscle has become less able to contract over time or has a mechanical problem that limits its ability to fill with blood. As a result, it can’t keep up with the body’s demand, and blood returns to the heart faster than it can be pumped out—it becomes congested, or backed up. This pumping problem means that not enough oxygen-rich blood can get to the body’s other organs. To put things in perspective, a healthy heart of his age has an ejection fracture (EF) of 60-70% of blood out of the left ventricle with every heart beat - Sonnie's EF got as low as 9% for a period of time and averaged 23%; anything lower than 40% indicates possible heart failure. With Sonnie being the big teddy bear he is, it was very hard to digest the fact his heart technically wasn't big enough to give the amount of love he gives out, back to himself.

</div>

<div><br />

</div>

<div>After his initial diagnosis in 2015, he had a pacemaker fitted. This pacemaker sent electrical pulses to make the ventricles pump at the same time - this helped his heart pump blood much better and put him back feeling like the man he had always been for years to follow. Since having the pacemaker fitted, he had two twin boys, Bryce and Tyson, shortly thereafter in 2016. Across the past three years, Sonnie's health was visibly declining and conversations about a heart transplant ensued. Extreme shortness of breath, bloating in his abdomen, severe fatigue and water retention all progressed at a rapid rate which initiated the next steps in improving his quality of life - he qualified for a heart transplant in 2021 and the process began. Although complex in many ways, we are incredibly grateful and fortunate to have had an idea of what to expect and access to the best medical care in the world.

</div>

<div><br />

</div>

<div>Come 2023, the Jackson children range from 27 to 7 years old and are proven to be one of the best yet hard-headed support systems a man could ask for. Having built-in babysitters for the littles that are also big enough to kick Sonnie's a** in gear when needed is a blessing and a curse. On June 19th, the hospitalization call came through that it was time for Sonnie to be admitted into the CICU to prepare for a heart transplant. If you know Sonnie, you know he'd rather be on the golf course than go to the hospital... we all knew our lives were going to change from there on out once he ended the night there that Monday. Upon his first week under constant care from INOVA's cardiac team, he had his first Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump (IABP) implanted. An IABP is a device that controls blood flow from the heart. It deflates when the heart pumps blood out and inflates when the heart rests between beats, essentially creating a heartbeat for you. Having this device implanted kept him on a high severity level allowing him to be at the top of the list while waiting for a heart. Unfortunately, his heart didn't take the device well and ended up needing three replacements over the course of eight weeks. Once the third device needed replacement, and a heart big enough for Sonnie still hadn't been found, he knew it was time for a change - he decided to proceed with the Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) which would allow Sonnie to return home to his children while he waits for a heart transplant.

</div>

<div><br />

</div>

<div>An LVAD is a battery-operated, mechanical device that helps pump blood from the lower chambers of the heart to the rest of the body. This device can give an improved quality of life, but it’s not a cure to heart disease. It's often referred to as "bridge to transplant therapy." This is a life-saving therapy for patients awaiting a heart transplant, like Sonnie. In some cases, the LVAD is able to restore the failing heart, eliminating the need for a transplant. We know finding a donor with a large enough and a heart of the same blood type is out of our control so we are depending on the LVAD for long-term improved quality of life for Sonnie. We are incredibly thankful for the technology and medicinal advances of today's world.

</div>

<div><br />

</div>

<div>For eight weeks, Sonnie remained under constant care from INOVA's cardiac team for pre-operation prepping. As I am typing this, on August 19th, I am sitting at the end of my father's hospital bed as he recovers from his open-heart surgery for LVAD implantation. Upon regaining consciousness and despite the pain, he has been absolutely determined to heal and come back stronger than ever. Per the doctorate board in his unit, he has broken all patient records thus far; first to be extubated within 24 hours and first to be walking within 48 hours. The family didn't expect anything less. Once he was cleared to move from the CVICU to the step-down unit, which was the last stage in recovery before discharge, things took a turn. His blood pressure remained severely lower than the necessary threshold and he had to be re-admitted into critical care.

</div>

<div><br />

</div>

<div>For those of you who don't know Sonnie, he grew up in Sugar Land in Sterling, VA and spent his childhood surrounded by his many brothers and sisters. As of recently, he has been raising his youngest children in Leesburg, VA; it was the last place she was before leaving for the hospital on June 19th.

</div>

<div><br />

</div>

<div>Despite the life-altering past couple months, and a newfound lifetime of uncertainty, Sonnie has remained in great spirits. If you have been fortunate to know him, you can attest that Sonnie is a force to be reckoned with. His friendliness, leadership and love have absolutely filled the hospital rooms. His tenacity and take-no-sh*t attitude have guided him through the hardships of self-advocacy in the medical setting. He continues to exude his lust for life and hope for the future, even during these challenging times. Sonnie has a long, unpredictable road ahead of him; with your support, he can better adjust to this unfamiliar way of life and plan for a bright future ahead not only for him, but for his family.

</div>

<div>This GoFundMe aims to help Sonnie's family and friends through this challenging time. Although each donation means so much to us, your support is invaluable. We ask that you keep Sonnie in your thoughts and prayers as he recovers from his LVAD implantation and awaits a new heart.

<div>From the Jackson family to yours, please get your heart checked, even if you don't have significant history of heart disease. Also, if you are not registered as an organ donor, reconsider. It will save someone's life.

A Heart for Sonnie

<div><strong>Mike Davis here. John Langan, Jessica M., and I are fundraising on behalf of Laird Barron.</strong>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>I think most of you know that Laird has been very sick these past few months. <strong>Now he's in the hospital, and he needs our help.</strong> The following is written by <strong>John</strong>:
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div><em>I went up to see Laird tonight. He’s finally in a proper hospital room and resting. The results from some of the tests that have been run on him have started to come in, and my dear friend is not in the best of shape. Laird is already receiving care for some of what’s ailing him, and it’s having a positive effect. There are still more tests to be done, though, and more treatment ahead. </em><strong><em>Indeed, some of it will be ongoing.</em></strong>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div><em>He’s still exhausted and not able to talk much.</em>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div><strong><em>The big problem now is that Laird is without health insurance.</em></strong><em> This is because he makes his living solely as a writer. For those of you familiar with the US healthcare system, you know how dire not having insurance in an emergency can be.</em>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div><strong><em>A number of you have asked if you can do anything to help Laird out. Right now, this fundraiser is that thing.</em></strong><em> I know money’s tight, but no amount is too small. If you can spread the word, that’s of equal value. And all the good thoughts, wishes, and prayers have meant and continue to mean a great deal. Thanks.</em>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div><strong>Mike here:</strong> Laird is a private person and I'm trying to convey just how serious this is without revealing too much personal information. <strong>Make no mistake: This is <em>very </em>serious, and potentially life-threatening.</strong> That said: He needs a bronchoscopy. He has a mass on his lung. His blood sugar numbers are dangerously high. He will need medications as well. These are just a few of the things that will need to be paid for.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>We are raising funds for Laird for three reasons:
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<ul>
<li>Medical bills (and they will be very high, make no mistake).
</li>
<li>Health Insurance (his friends are looking into getting him health insurance, if possible)
</li>
<li>Lost income (Laird has been on a sickbed since September or so. That's a long time to be unable to work.)
</li>
</ul>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Laird has been very supportive of so many in the horror community. It's our turn to give back.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>And hey: <strong>we want more Laird Barron fiction, don't we?</strong> More Isaiah Coleridge, more Barronesque weird fiction and cosmic horror. Right? :)
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div><strong>Most of all, he's a damn good person and a great friend. </strong>He's a horror writer, but ironically, he's a bright light in a dark world. Let's make sure he's around for a long time to come.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Thank you, so much, for donating.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div><strong>EDIT: A word about the goal amount: We are guessing, but $100,000 is probably on the low side. This could potentially run into hundreds of thousands of dollars. I simply selected the first 6 digit number. But we will know more as the days go on. Thank you so much for helping Laird.</strong>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div><strong>EDIT 2: Jessica and I have now been able to set this GoFundMe up so that the funds go directly to Laird's bank account. I've adjusted the goal amount to $125,000. I sure appreciate all of you who have donated, and all of you who continue to donate even past that amount. You guys are awesome. Truly.</strong>

Laird Barron: hospital costs, medication costs

<div>In late January, just after her 8th birthday, Savannah started feeling very tired and found it difficult to walk and balance. At the hospital, her symptoms were initially thought to be related to COVID. But when her fatigue and disequilibrium continued and she began having trouble seeing, talking, and swallowing, Savannah went to Phoenix Children’s Hospital, where she was diagnosed with diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG, also known as diffuse midline glioma). DIPG is a rare inoperable cancer of the brain stem that affects approximately 200 children in the United States every year. It was a heartbreaking diagnosis that no parent ever wants to receive. To learn more about DIPG, visit <a href="https://dipg.org" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"><a href="https://dipg.org/" target="_blank" class="" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">https://dipg.org/</a></a>

<div>
</div>

<div>Her family -- including her mom Jacquelyn, dad Clint, stepdad Garret, two brothers, and two sisters -- is in a devastating situation and could use all the support in the world. This campaign will help ease the financial burden of hospital stays, radiation and clinical trial treatments at some of the best pediatric care facilities in Arizona, consultations, recovery, and all the crushing costs of health care of this kind while ensuring Savannah's every need is taken of and her parents can focus on her well-being. Her treatments will help restore some of the cognitive function impaired by the tumor, and greatly improve her quality of life for some time.
</div>

<div>
</div>

<div>Savannah is a kind, curious, and silly second-grader who loves to dance, play soccer, do gymnastics, play on her Nintendo Switch, and watch her favorite shows. She sings every song at the top of her lungs and loves to give hugs and cuddles to anyone who needs them. Her absolute favorite thing is to be around her family, including her cousins. She loves animals of all kinds. Her family is doing everything they can to make her feel happy, comfortable, and loved during a very difficult time.
</div>

<div>
</div>

<div>Our family appreciates all your kindness and well wishes. Please consider donating or sharing this campaign.

<div>Thank you so much, on behalf of Savannah, Jacquelyn, Clint, Garret, Riley, Evan, Henry, and Charlie and the rest of our family.

Cancer Treatment for Savannah

<div>I’m David Gallaher, and I need some help.

<div><br />
</div>
<div>On March 4th of this year, I was assaulted in the streets of Park Slope in the middle of the afternoon trying to call 911 to prevent a 13-year old girl from being assaulted. A gang of kids punched me, threw trash at me, and pelted me with rocks.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>I was hospitalized at New York Methodist in Brooklyn with a broken cheekbone and kidney damage. While health insurance was able to cover the initial ER costs -- the cost of the imaging, including MRI, X-Ray, and CT Scan adds up, as does the aftercare. I am asking for a little bit of help to get me through the end of the month to cover medical bills, lost week of work, and subsequent court costs.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Fortunately, there was a video of the incident and the suspects were arrested hours after the assault. I have been working with the DA and other groups to bring a degree of restorative justice to this case. My hope is that some good will come out of this harrowing event and that justice will be served.

Medical Bills following Brooklyn Assault

<div>The Thomas family is facing one of the hardest things imaginable: the loss of 19-year-old Caitlin to medical complications from Aicardi Syndrome.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Caitlin has been hospitalized for more than a month. One or both of her parents, Michael and Lynne, have been with her the entire time. But medical tests have now confirmed there was nothing the doctors could do to resolve Caitlin’s recent complications. On October 7, Michael announced that they are in the end phase of Caitlin’s life.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Lynne and Michael are devastated, as are all of us who know them and Caitlin.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>I’ve spoken a bit with Michael. It sounds like the medical costs of Caitlin’s treatment are covered. End-of-life costs are another matter.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>The goal of this fundraiser is to cover those end-of-life expenses, and to hopefully provide a financial cushion to allow the Thomases to spend their remaining time with Caitlin – and when the time comes, to grieve – without also having to worry about money. All donations will go directly to Michael and Lynne (with the exception of GoFundMe’s processing fee).
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Lynne, Michael, and Caitlin are well known and loved in science fiction and fantasy circles. Lynne and Michael are co-editors of the award-winning Uncanny Magazine. Caitlin is a familiar presence at SF/F conventions. Their family has touched countless lives.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Thank you for your support.

Lynne and Michael Thomas

Our friend has cancer. I’m not even going to say “my friend’s wife has cancer”, she is that as well of course, but she is also the kind of person who would give you the shirt off her back. Yet here she is with the big C. AGAIN. Leukemia of all things. Her husband, Guy Dorian Sr, is a comic book artist who has worked on projects involving characters from Marvel and DC and 20th century, and many others. But, he simply can’t work fast enough to cover mounting medical costs. I could sing her and her doting husband’s praises all day but I will let her explain it since she does it best. <br /><br />She writes: <br /><br />“I once again have cancer. I usually don't share very personal things but I have been fighting acute myeloid leukemia (a serious cancer of the blood) since November. Two years ago I received radiation treatment for breast cancer which may be the cause of this leukemia. <br /><br />I have spent a month in the hospital and have had countless mri, ct scans, bone marrow biopsies, spinal taps etc and now next week, I am going back into the hospital for another month for a bone marrow transplant.  I am blessed to have two of my siblings as exact matches so I will receive a wonderful gift from my brother to try and save my life. There is no guarantee it will work but it is my best chance at a cure.  This is rough mentally, physically, emotionally and financially on not only me but my husband, my children and my family. <br /><br />Thank you to everyone who has been here for me when I feel awful, when I cry my eyes out and when I need someone to lift me back up. <br /><br />Please keep me in your prayers and wish me luck.”

A Little Help for our Friend

*This fundraiser needs to be done with some amount of discretion and privacy for those involved. As many of you know, we are in an untenable living situation and it's really important that we don't create more havoc in an already volatile situation.
All monies raised through this fundraiser will go directly to the cost of moving or replacing items such as our clothing, my son's personal belongings, equipment and supplies for our small business.
**I have looked into the cost of a moving company but the prices are extremely high. It seems best to ship our books at book rate, mail clothing, and replace supplies for soaping rather than having everything shipped together. I am open to suggestions on this. I am trying to be reasonable in my expectations and understand this isn't going to be simple.
**I believe the amount set is enough to get our things to Illinois with the least amount of further trauma to my little family AND/or replace much needed items.
** Honestly, I have so much shame around this situation so any help, whether it is just a kind word, monetary or whatever is greatly appreciated.
***Our soap shop will remain open until the 3rd week of June and any money raised through that Avenue will go directly toward helping us start over.
If you have any questions, please ask myself or Michael. We are doing our best to get through this.

Help Us Move Our Family

<p><strong>Save Larry Edmunds Bookshop!<br /></strong>A personal message from Jeffrey Mantor, proprietor of Hollywood Boulevard's last bookshop .<br /><br />Two years ago, the production team for a new Quentin Tarantino film about old Hollywood approached me and asked if they could rebuild the 1969 version of the Larry Edmunds Bookshop in its previous location, a few doors west. I agreed and watched with many others as an entire block of our beloved boulevard stepped back in time. Every night I would go out and see what new details the talented team  had added that day. Only three establishments still remain from 1969 : The Supply Sergeant, the legendary restaurant Musso &amp; Franks and this bookshop.<br /><br />Founded in 1938, the Larry Edmunds Bookshop moved to Hollywood Boulevard in the 1950's and learned that people all around the world seemed to have something in common, a love for the movies. They didn't just like to watch them either, they liked to collect material about them: books and photos and scripts and posters and even camera equipment.<br />A  Larry Edmunds catalogue was published and revised a few times over the years and offered everything from the original poster for the film "Frankenstein" to Bernard Herrmann's original score for the film "Citizen Kane".<img src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/47404452_1586916349194678_r.jpeg" width="100%" media_type="3" alt="47404452_1586916349194678_r.jpeg" /><br /><img src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/47404452_1586916142363568_r.jpeg" width="100%" media_type="3" alt="47404452_1586916142363568_r.jpeg" /><br /><br />I started here 29 years ago as the stock boy, working with and learning from the owners, one of which was Git Polin. She had made the first catalogue and all the subsequent ones as well.<br />16 years later, I became the owner of this legendary bookstore and all the history that accompanied it with legendary patrons from Henry Miller to Larry McMurtry to Michael Jackson.<br /><br />It is a bookshop that has hosted events with director William Friedkin and stars Ernest Borgnine and Shirley Jones, where scholars of celluloid like Leonard Maltin, Eddie Muller and Kevin Brownlow have signed their books and shared their passion.<br /><br />It is a bookshop where you could watch "I Dream of Jeannie" with Barbara Eden, "Laverne &amp; Shirley" with Cindy Williams, "Gilligan's Island" with Dawn Wells or "The Dick Van Dyke Show" with Carl Reiner and get a personally inscribed copy of their books too!<br /><br />It is a bookshop where, with our friends at the American Cinematheque  at the Egyptian &amp; Aero Theaters we have participated in screening/book signing events with everyone from Alejandro Jodorowsky to John Waters, Debbie Reynolds to John Sayles, David Cronenberg to Oliver Stone to literally hundreds more.<br />It has been my life, my privilege, to be able to play a part in bringing these incredible artists together with their fans and to keep alive and expand the tradition of the Larry Edmunds Bookshop.<br /><br />Today however, like so many of our friends in Hollywood, be it tourism, filmmaking, stage or in the movie theatres, we are struggling. Our store is closed by order of the city of Los Angeles until the Covid-19 crisis subsides and our only income has been books that you order directly and that I have personally wrapped and shipped to you.<br />Certainly better than nothing, it is not enough to keep the store going. We are not meeting our basic operating expenses and I'm worried we won't be able to hang on.<br />I've followed  directions for receiving aid, but as so many small businesses are learning this a slow and unpredictable process. My own bank told me to get in line for a "possible" loan. I have applied for a grant and will apply for more, but even that help (if it is approved) is going to take time and will only be supplemental.<br /><br />That is why I'm reluctantly asking for your help today. I am not comfortable asking for charity and have resisted making this request, but I cannot sit by and watch the 82 year old bookshop that I love so much disappear through no fault of its own without making every effort to save it.<br /><br />I am keenly aware of our shortcomings at this time. The need to develop our online store for customers is paramount. We also need to expand with podcasts and virtual signings, but all of those things are going to take time to develop and money I don't have the hire the personnel to help.<br /><br />Perhaps the fate of a cinema bookstore on Hollywood Boulevard doesn't seem like a big deal in the grand scheme of things, but Hollywood is a state of mind as much as it is a place. If you doubt that, ask our friends who won't be here this very week from the Turner Classic Movies Film Festival, our biggest weekend of the entire year. The financial loss as well as the loss of community is significant.<br /><br />So many professionals have come to me with stories of this store as a resource. Director Renny Harlin (Die Hard 2) sent away in his youth from Finland for books on directing. Mike Scully, Emmy award winning "Simpsons" scribe told me he learned how to format scripts from first buying them in this bookshop.<br /><br />And that movie about old Hollywood the store gets a drive-by in was of course "Once Upon A Time in Hollywood". Mr. Tarantino told me he was thrilled to include us in the film because he had shopped here as a 15<br />year old back in the day.<br /><img src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/47404452_1586916188408144_r.jpeg" width="100%" media_type="3" alt="47404452_1586916188408144_r.jpeg" /><br /><br />Here's hoping we will stick around so that some other 15 year old cinephile can come here to find the resources to learn and study about their favorite films, actors and directors and get those "how to" books so they can be inspired to tell their own stories and share them with the world.<br /><br />Then, that kid can follow his dream as I've followed mine. Mine is a "once upon a time" Hollywood story about how in the third act The Larry Edmunds Bookshop was saved and continued to operate like it has since 1938, the year before "Gone With The Wind" &amp; "The Wizard of Oz".<br /><br />That is my Hollywood ending- but I can't do it without you!<br />So please, if you are able, help me to Save the Larry Edmunds Bookshop. If you cannot at this time, maybe you can help us pass the message along.<br /><br />Until we meet again, either in the store  or at any one of the dozens of venues where I've brought books to sell, from the Queen Mary to Barbara Stanwyck's living room, I extend gratitude and thank you for your consideration.<br /><br />Be well,<br />Jeffrey Mantor<br />Bookman for Life at the Larry Edmunds Bookshop<br /><a href="https://larryedmunds.com/"><a href="https://larryedmunds.com/" target="_blank" class="" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">https://larryedmunds.com/</a></a><br /><a href="https://www.facebook.com/Larry-Edmunds-Bookshop-260057748079"><a href="https://www.facebook.com/Larry-Edmunds-Bookshop-260057748079" target="_blank" class="" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">https://www.facebook.com/Larry-Edmunds-Bookshop-260057748079</a></a><br />Instagram @larryedmunds1938 &amp; @thelarebrary<br /><img src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/47404452_1586916387437039_r.jpeg" width="100%" media_type="3" alt="47404452_1586916387437039_r.jpeg" />

Save Larry Edmunds Bookshop

In spring of 2019, while on an animation job in Madrid, Mary Lescher, whose credits include Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, Mulan, and most recently Klaus, learned she had developed an aggressive Stage 4 cancer of the gallbladder, which has progressed into her liver and lymphatic system.<br /><br />Since chemotherapy didn't promise anything more than a few painful months, she refused it. The only course of action now is to manage her pain and keep her comfortable.<br /><br />She has no medical insurance in the United States, but is currently surrounded by her family and longtime partner, John. Mary needs financial help getting through this last stage of her life. Donations will help with medications and living expenses, which are simply too high to handle without assistance.<br /><br /><br />This gofundme is organized by John Urbancik, Mary's partner for the past 20+ years, with the intention of using raised funds to pay for expected and unexpected medical and living expenses (for example, medication and doctor visits) as she deals with her terminal illness. John will be withdrawing the funds for Mary, as they have lived together for years and continue to do so now, and John is handling all the financial matters at this point in time. They currently reside in Florida.

Cancer Expenses for Mary Lescher

When I adopted Django almost exactly one year ago, I was still heartbroken from the loss of my dog Butch. But Django's goofy smile, sweet personality and unconditional love helped me heal.<br /><br /><img class="not-resizable" src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/17960366_1486099775.0368_funddescription.jpg" alt="" width="100%" /><br />He has always been a little odd and endearingly klutzy with a quirky gait. But I recently noticed that his paws were knuckling under and he would sometimes fall. I started to get worried that there was something more serious going on with him.<br /><br />I took him to see the brilliant and kind Dr Lisa Gerlach at VCA in the Valley, who had been so good with Butch during his last year. She was concerned about the obvious signs of neurological impairment she saw during his exam and recommended an MRI and spinal tap.<br /><br /><img class="not-resizable" src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/17960366_1486099969.5865_funddescription.jpg" alt="" width="100%" /><br />He has now been diagnosed with severe stringohydromyelia (dilation of the fluid space and swelling of the spinal cord) throughout his neck and back. He is also suffering from a congenital deformation of the skull called COMS, which causes compression in the brain and results in abnormal flow of spinal fluid.<br /><br /><img class="not-resizable" src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/17960366_1486098947.4582_funddescription.jpg" alt="" width="100%" /><br />It's been a rough year so far for me and Django. A burst pipe caused the ceiling to collapse in our house on New Year's Day, dumping asbestos all over everything. We were forced to move to a temporary apartment while guys in space suits took away all my books and furniture and all of Django's toys. It's been incredibly stressful and finances have been stretched to the absolute limit, but having my little Boston buddy with me is making it suck just a little less. Which is why I'm asking for help taking care of Django's swiftly mounting medical bills. Because I just don't know what I would do without the little squirt.<br /><br /><img class="not-resizable" src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/17960366_1486099810.6041_funddescription.jpg" alt="" width="100%" /><br />The good news is that his condition is treatable and with the right care it will be possible to give him a high quality of life for many years to come.  Anyway thanks so much for taking the time to read this, and for any help you can offer no matter how small.<br /><br />x Christa &amp; Django

Help Capital Gazette Journalists

My name is Dan Smeddy.  I am 65 years old and on SS diability.  In October of last year, my LTD insurance with my past employer came to an end.  I receive $818 from SS.  $600 of that goes to Condo fees, auto/home insurance, electricity , a bank loan and cable/internet {the lowest cost available}  If you know me through FaceBook, you know of my struggles.  I also suffer from Depression and am Bi-Polar.  My goal of $ 40,000 is to survive for the next 4 years. { $10,000 a year is what I lost}  If you can find it in your heart to give ANYTHING I will greatly appreciate it.  Thank you and God bless.
