<div>We are so sorry to have to tell you that our beloved friend Sarah Akawa was diagnosed last week (9/8/2025) with <a href="https://www.cancer.org/cancer/types/breast-cancer/about/types-of-breast-cancer/triple-negative.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">triple-negative breast cancer</a> . She is still awaiting a treatment plan from her medical team, but what we know currently is that Sarah’s cancer is very aggressive. She will be starting chemotherapy within the next two weeks, followed by surgery, followed by more chemotherapy and possibly radiation. During her chemotherapy, Sarah will become extremely sick from the side effects of her medication, and this will be ongoing for several months prior to surgery. At minimum, she is looking at a year of intensive and serious medical treatment.

Help Sarah Fight Breast Cancer

<div>At the age of 63, Joann passed peacefully along side her children while listening to her favorite movie The Sound of Music early this morning, January 1st, 2025. She was a great mother. She spent a majority of her life raising her three children Anthony, Denae and Joseph in East LA. Joann was an amazing homemaker and was known to make one of a kind costumes for her children, and would continue to provide any and all things needed for her three babies through life’s growing pains. Through her extensive battle with Huntington’s disease, she still found the high points in life and the little things to enjoy. Whether it be through a piece of cake that satisfied her sweet tooth, playing cards, listening to Smokey, Janet and anything Motown. Watching her favorite movies, cheering on her favorite team the Los Angeles Dodgers, going to her grandchildren’s birthday parties and listening to her son sing. She is survived by her three children and her three grandchildren. During these hard times we ask for time to mourn privately.

Rally for Dalton: Aid His ICU Recovery

<div>Heather Linae Schmidt of Madison, WI, passed away suddenly on Tuesday March 12, 2024 after a long battle with kidney disease and addiction. She was 43.

<div>Heather had a tender heart toward others, especially those who didn’t fit into traditional society and those who lived on the fringes. She’d befriend and accept them, love them unconditionally, and ensure they knew they were valued and loved. Heather leaves behind her longtime partner Jason Quaschnik, and their son, Corey Alexander, who at just 19 is working with other family members to make after-life plans. Corey plans to care for the family’s pair of cats, and is actively looking for housing for himself while he and the cats stay with Heather’s mom, Cheri.
</div>

<div>Heather didn’t have much in place for funeral plans or the funds to do so, and the family is still working to sort out whether she had any sort of life insurance through her employer (they are doubtful). While Heather’s immediate family are able to manage some of the costs, financial help is needed to help sort out all of the logistical things that come after someone passes away. The family is planning memorial services, bereavement leave only covers so many days out of work, and Corey needs to find and get settled in an apartment without much in the way of savings. Additionally, the cats have vet and food expenses, and may need to be fostered for a short time while Corey finds housing (note: we are working to find foster services for the cats (a bonded pair), but would consider help from friends / a personal reference).

<div>Alison's unexpected passing has left us all speechless. Leaving others speechless is a knack that she definitely had. She was headstrong and loved rhetoric. Beyond a fiercely loving wife, mother, sister, and daughter, Alison was a uniquely welcoming and inclusive individual. She gave attention to, respected, and loved all people and things that would otherwise fly underneath the average person's radar. For instance, she was a strong advocate for the LGBTQ+ community, her favorite holiday was Flag Day, she adored Sigmund Freud, and for Halloween Elliott, Ada, and her were a family of matching Cthulhus.

It is with much devastation that I am sharing that last Saturday evening Dave suffered a stroke and serious damage from a fall. He is currently in the ICU and intubated. Anyone that knows Dave is well aware of the qualities that make him special. He has an enormous, genuine heart and would do absolutely anything for anyone. He has an infectious smile and positive personality that makes everyone feel like they are one of his best friends. His energetic demeanor is one that cannot be missed. <br /><br />With him being in the hospital his wife, Nellie, is unable to work while she splits up her time between being with Dave and also caring for their two incredible boys and precious baby girl. <br /><br />I’m asking for your support for Dave and his family as they navigate through the unknowns of what the future holds. In Memory of David Bulow

Jodi Kay Schoenemann, age 31 passed away on Friday, March 12, 2021 in a fatal car accident.  Jodi was born September 28, 1989 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Madison.  She is the daughter of Garry Schoenemann and Sherri (Hatton) Schoenemann.<br /><br />Jodi grew up in the Madison area and graduated from East High School in 2008, where she played on the basketball team.  Jodi worked as a CNA and job coach at Central Wisconsin Center (CWC) for almost a decade.  She was a compassionate, hardworking caregiver, educator and friend to so many staff and residents she worked with.  Jodi surrounded herself with everyone she loved.  You could find her spending summers around the campfire at Willow Mill campsite with family, fishing with Dad, cheering on her nephews at sporting events, dancing at music festivals, advocating for social justice, raising awareness for people and families living with Huntington’s Disease and socializing with her loved ones at her favorite local establishments.  Jodi was best known for her contagious laugh, the immense love she had for her family and the ability to make a friend out of everyone she met. <br /><br />In lieu of a traditional funeral, Jodi’s family is organizing an outdoor celebration of life for 5/15/2021. <br /><br />We have been asked by her community of loved ones about how they can help support those effected by the loss of Jodi.<br /> <br />If you can please donate or share this fundraiser, to help Jodi’s family cover part of  the cost for her celebration of life and memorial.  Each and every donation will be greatly appreciated during this difficult time.

Support for Deb During Breast Cancer Treatment

<div>On Sunday, March 14th, the Dibble family got the worst news imaginable, Scott had a Subarachnoid Hemorrhage Stroke.
</div>
<div>He was rushed to the hospital in Janesville and not long after was transported to St. Mary’s <span style="letter-spacing:0.0085px;">Hospital in Madison. After a day of care at St. Mary’s Hospital, he was transferred to the </span><span style="letter-spacing:0.0085px;">UW-Hospital, where he remains in the ICU.</span>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>During this time, the family found out that he has a brain aneurysm and a bacterial infection <span style="letter-spacing:0.0085px;">in his blood coming from his heart. He is on antibiotics and pain medicine to keep him </span><span style="letter-spacing:0.0085px;">comfortable. Scott has undergone several tests and multiple MRI’s and will continue to receive </span><span style="letter-spacing:0.0085px;">MRI’s to monitor his condition. Scott also has daily speech and physical therapy. Doctors </span><span style="letter-spacing:0.0085px;">believe that the stroke was caused by the bacterial infection in his blood which is a strep </span><span style="letter-spacing:0.0085px;">infection.</span>

</div>
<div>The stroke has caused damage to Scott’s right side including use of his right arm and complications with speech. <span style="letter-spacing:0.0085px;">He is able to say some words but the doctors have</span>

<div>told the family that he may never get his speech back fully. And for anyone who knows Scott,

<div>and his charismatic personality, this is heartbreaking news.
</div>

<div><span style="letter-spacing:0.0085px;">This last year has been extremely difficult for many families, including the Dibble’s. And now,</span><br />

<div>with Tracy having to take time off work to be with Scott and with the uncertainty of if or when <span style="letter-spacing:0.0085px;">Scott will be able to return to work, their financial situation has become more difficult. Scott will </span><span style="letter-spacing:0.0085px;">need ongoing therapy for months, up to years, as a result of the stroke and at the moment it is </span><span style="letter-spacing:0.0085px;">unclear when Scott will be discharged from the hospital. Through these outlets individuals find the ability to process, accept and transform emotions. Thus leading to an empowered individual.

<p>Sport is where we learn about confidence and creativity. At some point, you always fail in sport. But you find through perseverance, teamwork and passion... you can overcome those failures that once felt so big. Sport is an escape from the world. It’s where you find your blank slate and place of flow.<br /><br />Through sport, yoga and meditation we will bring connection, confidence and empowerment.

With the support of United Way of Dane County and Boys &amp; Girls Club of Dane County, UT is offering coordinated services, advocacy, rental assistance, and misc. funding. We're also offering 100 free meals a week in partnership with Rib Master’s Food Truck and Catering; delivery services for food, medical supplies, and other essential items for 25 families a week (in partnership with N Motion Medical Transport Company).<br /><br />In addition to providing navigation support to access COVID-19 community and government resources. For Joe Farrell’s rehabilitation, therapy and recovery from stroke. #getjoebackonthepitch  #strokessuck<br /><br /><strong>What Happened and Why Joe Needs Help</strong><br /><br />On May 8, 2020, Joe’s life took a difficult turn when he suffered a major stroke, causing severe damage and resulting in partial paralysis on the left side of his body and some speech loss.  Joe suffered the stroke on the morning of Friday, May 8, shortly after filling his passion the night before--training Richmond community kids in the beautiful game of soccer (or football as Joe and his mates call it).<br /><br />Joe was under extensive care at the Johnston Willis Neuroscience ICU for almost a week before being transferred to the rehabilitation department to begin his long journey to recovery.  He recently endured his first rehab session, working harder than ever, with his wonderful wife Miriam by his side every minute.  Doctors expect that Joe will have some level of intense rehabilitation for the next 6-12 months.<br /><br /><strong>Why We Love Joe</strong><br /><br />Joe has a boundless dedication to his friends and family and the game of soccer.  It’s impossible to match Joe’s energy and love for his wife and his 4 year old son, Joseph (his “wee” boy as they say in Scotland). As you can imagine, Joe made sure that Joseph had a soccer ball at his feet since he could walk and has even been seen wearing a pint sized kilt!<br /><br />Like so many of us, we found ourselves connected to Joe through the game of soccer.  He has an infectious and energetic personality that draws you to him and his passion for the game. His impact on Richmond youth and soccer can’t be overstated. He has inspired so many young boys and girls to chase their dreams and helped put Richmond on the map as a national soccer and futsal destination.<br /> <br />Born in Scotland, Joe is a former collegiate and youth professional player. Joe has committed his life to youth soccer development, helping lead Chesterfield United soccer club for 16 years before co-founding FutsalRVA, an organization focused on teaching area children the game of futsal, which is a 5 v 5 small-sized soccer game played on a hard surface with a heavier ball.  Under Joe’s leadership, FutsalRVA has introduced thousands of local kids to this international game and developed a number of teams that have won regional and national championships. Joe plays a significant role in futsal at a national level as well, having been appointed as the Southeast Regional director for the United States Youth Futsal association, the preeminent futsal organization in America. Joe also helps lead OwnTouch soccer, a premier technical soccer training center in Richmond where Joe develops soccer players of all abilities to gain better touch on the ball and confidence in the game.<br /><br />Joe’s positive and infectious approach to coaching has made him highly respected and successful throughout the Richmond community and on the national level. Joe has built a reputation of being a true player’s coach and Director, relating easily to the needs of players and parents both on and off the futsal court. <br /><br /><strong>Let’s Get Joe Back on the Pitch</strong><br /><br />Joe needs our help.  He will have a difficult and costly road to recovery.  All contributions will go directly to his family for medical expenses, food, housing and other costs not covered by insurance.  Unfortunately insurance will not cover all of the rehabilitation needs and other miscellaneous expenses.<br /><br />We will post regular updates here, and any contribution is greatly appreciated by Joe and his family.  Please help Joe, as he has touched so many of our lives through his own generosity, positivity and dedication to the development of children.

Help Joe Get Back on the Pitch (and Futsal Court)

Zack and Laura Kraus are MANY things to all of us and to one another- they are each other's life loves, they are a vibrant part of Northwest Arkansas Community with their vision and creation of Flamingo Springs, steadfast friends, deeply invested family members, and most importantly, they are an amazing dad and mom thanks to Gray and baby #2 coming this summer. <br /><br />Sometimes even the most joyful, beautiful, creative families get the worst kinds of curveballs, and the Kraus family are one such family. Zack and Laura recently learned that Zack has cancer that began in his stomach. Earlier this week Zack underwent surgery and it was discovered that the cancer spread outside his stomach to his abdomen, which means that the cancer is in later stages than we had all hoped.<br /><br />The plan for treatment is chemo for the next 4 months and return to Baltimore to his doctors to decide next steps. Currently the Krauses are doing all they can and taking this one step at a time. <br /><br />We love them with all our hearts. Let’s show them that we are shoulder to shoulder in this life together- that they can lean on us when it feels their world is so unsteady. Let's steady them, together. <br /><br />These funds will help pay for the unexpected medical and travel expenses, basic living costs while receiving treatment and preparing for a new baby, and the miscellaneous financial needs that go in tandem with tackling this massive curveball. Support for Zack Kraus and Family

For those who don’t know, Paycee is 13 years old and has been diagnosed with osteosarcoma. She is on chemo therapy and will have lots of upcoming hospital stays. Since our sweet Paycee has been diagnosed with osteosarcoma we’ve done seemingly everything we can to help and support. While I wish I could take every hard time that has yet to come and push them all away for Paycee, her mom and dad, and all of her family - it’s just not possible! So selling t-shirts and bracelets and raising money like this will help them tremendously. Paycee will face surgery in the midst of chemo treatments back at the Children’s Hospital in Colorado. I hope to help Paycee and her parents have one less stress paying for travel and medical expenses that will surely come up. HR, lead vocalist of Bad Brains and Human Rights, needs your help.<br /><br /><strong>From his wife, Lori:</strong><br />"I am HR's caregiver. He has a neurobiological disorder and has also had severe headaches for years. The headaches have gotten progressively worse; in November, he began living with almost constant pain. He has been diagnosed with a rare type of headache called SUNCT.  There is no known cure and no reliable medical treatment. To give you an idea of what he's dealing with, the headaches are nicknamed “Suicide Syndrome.” The headaches come randomly, with no warning, at all hours of the day and night; but for him, they are much worse at night. The intensity of the nighttime headaches is so great that he yells, cries out, groans, and sobs—repeatedly, every few minutes, for most of the night. He can't work. He has no quality of life. If you call him and ask how he is, he will say, 'Everything's okay,' because that's just how he is. But everything is not okay.<br /><br />"We've been consulting doctors for the past few years, and have uncovered several health issues that we were able to address and overcome.  But these headaches...  In the past six months, he's been to the emergency room twice, had an overnight in the hospital, has seen two neurologists, and so far he has a diagnosis and found a pain medication that worked well for a while but is not safe to take long-term—so it's two steps forward, three steps back. He has an appointment in early May at a Headache Center--not fully covered by health insurance--where we hope to find someone with experience with this type of headache. He's on a cocktail of pharmaceuticals that scares me. He has lost weight, with visible muscle wasting. <br /><br />"As a clinical herbalist, you can be sure that I have also been tapping into my extensive knowledge of natural medicine. Nothing is working YET. I know what we need to try next, including acupuncture and some herbal preparations, however we can't manage the costs of these treatments. <br /><br />"I am a full-time caregiver. I work a full-time retail management job with varying shifts. I manage HR's calendar and business as best as I can. I've been trying really hard to work on extra projects to bring in some extra money (very slow going). I take care of the apartment, the car, the bills, HR's doctor appointments, everything. I do all of the things. And now I can't sleep because my husband is crying out in pain all night. On top of the physical stress of shift work and not getting enough sleep, the emotional and psychological stress of watching him be in pain and not being able to do a damn thing about it is wearing me down. He needs me to be around more and he needs me to be at my best. I can't do this alone anymore. Health Fund for HR (Paul Hudson)

Steve Manley has been at B-Side Records on State St for decades. If you've ever stopped by, you've probably seen him since he's there every day of the week (he is the owner and sole employee). He works every day not only because it's his passion, but because of the decline in popularity of physical music, which has resulted in the inability to maintain and pay helping hands.<br /><br />Many a regular customer has asked about his absence over the past week. On Monday Nov. 28th, Steve was biking to work in the rain when his front tire slipped and wedged into the space between railroad tracks, causing him to fall and break his hip in two places and fracture his right elbow. He needed surgery and will be out of work for this winter.<br /><br />A few former employees and friends of the business have taken time out of their busy lives to learn or re-learn how to run the store, but this cannot be kept up financially for the duration of his long recovery time. Since we're currently leading up to Christmas, we'll be needing two (less experienced) people on the clock almost every day, and with the estimated recovery time of 3 months before he is fit enough to work alone, we will be needing around $2000/month to be able to pay those keeping the shop open and recover from lost sales due to shortened hours.<br /><br />There is a possibility that if we can't make it through the season, B-Side may no longer be able to keep its doors open.
