<div>Mometu, the free streaming service dedicated to independent filmmakers, international cinema, underserved voices, and classic films, is at risk of shutting down. After recently announcing that the platform would be closing, a new opportunity has emerged to keep Mometu alive. We have the chance to relaunch as Mometu 2.0, but to make it happen, we need support from the very community that made Mometu valuable in the first place: its viewers, creators, and advocates for independent film.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Why Mometu matters: Mometu has always been more than just another streaming platform. It has been a space for independent filmmakers trying to break through, underserved voices and underrepresented stories, international cinema that often goes unseen by mainstream audiences, and classic films that deserve to be rediscovered.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>The Plan: With your support, Mometu can relaunch with a more sustainable model designed to keep the platform open long-term while continuing its core mission. The new structure will include free, ad-supported viewing (as audiences currently know it), a low-cost ad-free subscription tier, and an optional supporter tier to help us further our mission. Pricing is designed to remain highly accessible with paid plans starting at a low monthly rate. This hybrid approach is designed to keep Mometu free at its core, while giving audiences optional ways to support its future and help sustain the platform for creators.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>A platform built for community: Mometu was built by and for people who love film. It’s a curated space that is entirely independent and not dictated by an algorithm. Through our College Film Festival initiative, we’ve helped a college student secure funding for their first feature film. We’ve also championed award-winning independent cinema, including Stupid Games, a Telly Award-winning feature produced on a modest budget. And more recently, premiered Alex &amp; MOR, a sci-fi romance from first-time filmmaker Tim Glover.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Be Part of the Comeback: This is a rare chance to help preserve a platform built for independent film culture and directly influence the future of independent streaming. If you’ve discovered a favorite film, filmmaker, or story on Mometu, or believe in keeping independent cinema accessible, please consider supporting and sharing this campaign. Every contribution, no matter the size, helps move Mometu closer to relaunch. Help us save Mometu and keep independent streaming alive.

Save Mometu, Support Indie Streaming

<div>My name is David. I am a musician and I've done office work most of my professional life since graduating college. When the 2008 recession hit, I did what a lot of others did and went to grad school and got my master's degree. So, I have an MDiv...but no call to be a pastor from a denomination as yet. I recently worked for a church that I still attend but was laid off due to budgetary constraints, and churches often don't pay into the unemployment insurance system, so I can't draw on unemployment while I look for a job. <strong>Since March 10th of this year, I've been paying bills on savings and the generosity of friends.</strong> I'm casting the net further because I'm sending out applications and hearing nothing in return from anyone. I've had only 3 interviews in 5 months' time. Some experts are saying it takes 9 to 12 months right now to find a job, and I simply don't have that kind of savings.

</div>

<div><br />

</div>

<div><strong>Please be as generous as you are able. I prepared for a rainy day, but this has been a deluge with no end in sight.</strong>

</div>

Help David Overcome Job Search Struggles

<div>I am writing in the name of a family seeking safety outside of the horrors of Gaza. University English teacher Alaaeddin, student Gynecology Jomana and their daughter Naya are a family of three currently living in a state of constant fear for their safety and uncertainty of their future. They have seeked refuge in a shelter in Rafah and are now hopefully waiting for a chance to ensure their safety, by crossing the Rafah border into Egypt.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>But their evacuation comes at a steep price: the evacuation fee adds up to $5000 per person. Once in Egypt, Alaaeddin, Jomana and Naya have been offered temporary shelter by relatives which would give them a first glimpse of peace in a long time. But for that to happen, the family needs help. Their situation is urgent and every donation is appreciated towards their journey to safety.
</div>
<div>
</div>
<div>Your generosity is more than just financial assistance; it's a lifeline for a family on the brink of despair. Together, we can help Alaaeddin, Jomana, and Naya escape the horrors of war and rebuild their lives with dignity and resilience.

A family's journey to safety

<div>Hello, my name is Lance and I'm a community leader/youth program director located in Richmond, Virginia. Films like <strong>The Black Panther</strong> and <strong>A Wrinkle in Time</strong> definitely showed the impact that representation can have, not just on the quality of a film but on kids across the world. <strong>Help Richmond youth swim into theaters on</strong> <strong>May 26. Meet us under the sea!</strong>

</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div><strong>Representation Matters:</strong>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Disney’s<strong> "The Little Mermaid"</strong> is another great opportunity for young students to witness a Black major cinematic character come to life. This representation is fundamental for youth, especially those often underserved, underprivileged, and marginalized nationally and globally.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>The determination of certain people in power to manipulate and erase Black history, is motivation for me to continue dialogue with younger generations about the importance of representation.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>The Little Mermaid is much more than entertainment. It’s an opportunity for a child to embrace their individuality and power.
</div>
<div><br />
</div><img alt="" media_type="3" src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/71557271_1678293497663867_r." width="100%" />
<div><br />
</div>
<div>My ultimate goal is to give one thousand Black girls/students a chance to experience The Little Mermaid in theaters. It’s extremely important for Black youth to see characters that look like them portrayed in powerful ways on the big screen.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>We must maximize every opportunity to counter the negative images of Black people on television with something positive for Black girls &amp; boys.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div><strong>Ticket cost:</strong>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>$10.50-$12.50 per adult
</div>
<div>$9.50 per child under 12-years-old
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>All proceeds will go towards private screening tickets for children and chaperones, refreshments, and The Little Mermaid merchandise. On <strong>May 26th, Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” will be released nationwide.</strong> The film stars Halle Bailey as Ariel, alongside a cast of many other amazing actresses/actors.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Through donations from supporters like you, we’ll be distributing tickets to schools and community organizations throughout Richmond. Imagine the joy of a whole classroom of kids finding out they get to watch this movie for free.
</div>
<div><br />
</div><img alt="" media_type="3" src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/71557271_1678293411643211_r." width="100%" />
<div><br />
</div>
<div>After the movie experience is funded the remaining balance from our donations will go to organizations centered around giving Black girls an opportunity to lead by hearing their voices, putting them in the forefront of change efforts, and preparing them for positions in decision-making spaces.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>We’re also encouraging you to bring <strong>#TheLittleMermaidChallenge</strong> to a theater in your community.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Thank you for joining me again in supporting our youth, and a special thank you to <strong>Taylor Richardson</strong> for launching the challenge. <strong>Black girl magic matters.</strong>

The Little Mermaid Challenge: Richmond, Virginia

<p>Calling on all my animal loving friends who understand that dogs are family. Can you imagine having to choose between being stuck in a foreign country thousands of miles from all your friends and family and having to give up your best furry friend?

</p>

<p><span>Our dear friend Rich is in this situation and he needs our help. Vanessa has been close friends with Rich since high school and he is a hard working, kind-hearted guy who doesn’t like asking for help. </span>

</p>

<p><span>He has already done a lot of work putting together the complicated puzzle of trying to find a way back to his family and friends in Richmond, Virginia. He has a job lined up and a place to stay. The last missing piece is finding a way to cover the unreasonable fees and costs of bringing his best buddy Hamilton with him to the US from Australia. </span>

</p>

<p><span>If </span><span>you can spare even a small amount towards this huge expense, we would greatly appreciate it. Every little bit will help make sure Rich and Hamilton can stay together for many years to come. </span>

</p>

<p>Thank you in advance for your consideration, empathy, and generosity!!

</p>

<p>Please read more about Rich’s story in his own words below:

</p>

<p>—————————————————

</p>

<p><span>Hamilton is my 4-year-old Labradoodle. He is my best friend—my only companion through the isolation of Covid lockdowns—and he most certainly saved my life during the darkest depression I have ever known. </span>

</p>

<p><span>According to breeding standards, Hamilton is “faulty” because he has shaggy hair instead of curly poodle locks. He was the reject of the litter. But I fell in love with him instantly because he was such a ratty-haired little puppy. He is joyful, extremely smart, and amazingly empathic.</span>

</p>

<p><span>I am forced now to choose between taking him home to America with me as I accept an opportunity to rebuild my life, passing up that opportunity, or leaving him behind. For me, the third option is not even a choice. Dog-people understand.</span>

</p>

<p>I <span>moved to Australia in 2016 with the person I believed was my soulmate. Unfortunately, that wonderful “you-and-me-against-the-world” adventure dissolved into painful disappointment. </span><span>One good thing that came from the relationship, however, was Hamilton.  </span>

</p>

<p><span>When the relationship ended completely in March of 2020, just as the pandemic was becoming a major world event, I found myself lonely and isolated in a foreign country. Hamilton became my reason to get up in the morning, to go for walks and get exercise, and to keep pressing on as the world shut down for more than a year. I’ve learned to live with severe depression since my early 20’s, but living alone through a pandemic 10,000 miles from everyone I love was a bit of overkill.</span>

</p>

<p><span>Moving internationally is expensive, and the only way I can manage it is to sell everything, travel only with what I can carry, and rebuild from scratch when I get to Virginia. </span><span>Furniture and TV’s and Instant Pots can all be replaced, but the one thing I know I can’t live without is Hamilton. The expense of bringing him with me is far greater than I expected. For an animal his size (nearly 80 pounds), it will cost upwards of $5000 to get him from Melbourne to Los Angeles, and then from Los Angeles to Richmond, Virginia. </span>

</p>

<p><span>The costs include his preliminary vet visits, vaccinations, the correct size travel crate and accessories, and of course, his actual travel fares. It will also pay for a professional company to handle his transport because they can do things I can’t, like meet him at customs if we don’t end up on the same flight together, and communicate directly with airline staff in the event of a delayed or cancelled flight.</span>

</p>

<p><span>Some people have suggested that it’s just not worth such a great expense “for a dog.” And I have considered whether or not it’s better to find him a good home here and leave him behind. But every time I imagine leaving him somewhere and turning away from him for the last time, the idea is completely devastating.</span><br />
</p>

<p><span>I consider all we’ve been through:</span>

</p>

<ul>
<li><span>Raising him from an 8-week-old puppy. </span><span>Driving 900 miles across Australia together when we moved from Brisbane to Melbourne. </span><br />
</li>

<li><span>Nursing him back to health after a bad infection caused by a tiny wild grass seed that hitched a ride on his paw, then burrowed under his skin and had to be surgically removed.</span><br />
</li>

<li><span>The big scare when someone tried to steal him out of my car in the 25 seconds I went inside to pay for gas on the way to the park.</span>

</li>

</ul>
<div><br />
</div>

<ul>
<li><span>The way he retreated to the back of the car, barking in protest because he knows whose dog he is and was not leaving voluntarily with somebody else.</span>

</li>

</ul>
<p>

</p>

<ul>
<li><span>Taking him to the dog beach for the first time and watching him hop over the tiny breakers before discovering he could swim.</span>

</li>

</ul>
<p>

</p>

<ul>
<li><span>Living together 24-7 for more than 18 months while a pandemic shut the world down.</span>

</li>

</ul>
<p>

</p>

<ul>
<li><span>The way his chin is resting on my knee right at this moment because he senses my anxiety as I type this.</span>

</li>

</ul>
<div><br />
</div><span>It comes down to this—I can’t afford to bring Hamilton with me, but I won’t leave him behind. I simply can’t imagine life without this dog in it, and hopefully we’re due at least 10 more years together.<br /></span><br />
<p><span>Thanks, Kim, for offering to help. And thanks to all the dog-people who understand.</span>

</p>

Remembering Tom Yang

Nate Awdykowyz moved to China last May to start a new job venture.  It has turned out to be a lot of what he didn't hope for, and little to stay positive about.  One week before he moved, his car was stolen from in front of his Orange County (CA) home, then crashed.  Personal possessions were lost in the theft as well.  Because of the (repaired) damage to the car, he has been unable to sell it and is still making payments on it that he didn't expect on his China salary.  Money has been extremely tight.  He got a puppy he named Nando as a companion so he isn't alone in a very foreign place.  Nando has received the necessary shots to enter the US, but he cannot come here until at least January 24, 2018.  Then he cannot travel until the weather is more moderate.  <br /><br />Nate was not able to obtain a work visa for China and must travel to Hong Kong every 60 days, resulting in increased expenses.  Evidently Chinese banks don't talk to banks in the US, and transferring money is so far impossible.  If he buys the necessary tickets to return home, he won't have the money to make his car payments.  If he pays on his car, he will continue to be stuck in China.  Frustration mounts on many levels, and he has a strong desire to come back home.  It seems like every direction he turns is a Catch 22, and he can't make headway.  <br /><br />Your contribution to help Nate return to the US would be a great encouragement to him as he sees no other solution on the horizon.  Whatever you can give will bless him and will be used toward Nate's (and Nando's!) travel expenses  and transition to California.<br /><br />God bless!

Help Nate Get Back to the USA!
