Mometu, the free streaming service dedicated to independent filmmakers, international cinema, underserved voices, and classic films, is at risk of shutting down. After recently announcing that the platform would be closing, a new opportunity has emerged to keep Mometu alive. We have the chance to relaunch as Mometu 2.0, but to make it happen, we need support from the very community that made Mometu valuable in the first place: its viewers, creators, and advocates for independent film.

Why Mometu matters: Mometu has always been more than just another streaming platform. It has been a space for independent filmmakers trying to break through, underserved voices and underrepresented stories, international cinema that often goes unseen by mainstream audiences, and classic films that deserve to be rediscovered.

The Plan: With your support, Mometu can relaunch with a more sustainable model designed to keep the platform open long-term while continuing its core mission. The new structure will include free, ad-supported viewing (as audiences currently know it), a low-cost ad-free subscription tier, and an optional supporter tier to help us further our mission. Pricing is designed to remain highly accessible with paid plans starting at a low monthly rate. This hybrid approach is designed to keep Mometu free at its core, while giving audiences optional ways to support its future and help sustain the platform for creators.

A platform built for community: Mometu was built by and for people who love film. It’s a curated space that is entirely independent and not dictated by an algorithm. Through our College Film Festival initiative, we’ve helped a college student secure funding for their first feature film. We’ve also championed award-winning independent cinema, including Stupid Games, a Telly Award-winning feature produced on a modest budget. And more recently, premiered Alex & MOR, a sci-fi romance from first-time filmmaker Tim Glover.
