Christian Woke Up Unable to Walk.

On June 5, 2026, Christian woke up with excruciating lower back pain and suddenly couldn’t stand or walk. What initially seemed like a mysterious injury quickly became a life-threatening medical emergency. Over the following weeks, doctors discovered massive blood clots throughout his legs and pelvis caused by two rare clotting disorders: Antiphospholipid Syndrome (APS) and Lupus Anticoagulant. To save his life, surgeons performed three emergency thrombectomy surgeries in just nine days, removing an astonishing 111 inches of blood clots from his body.

Christian is incredibly grateful to be alive, but his journey is far from over. His doctors expect 6–12 months of recovery as he rebuilds his strength, regains his mobility, and works toward walking independently again. During this time, he is unable to work or earn an income and is currently unable to care for himself independently, relying on others for everyday tasks such as showering, transportation, meal preparation, cleaning, laundry, and other essential daily needs. He now depends on these services simply to get through each day while he focuses on healing.

While insurance has covered much of the emergency medical care, recovery itself comes with overwhelming financial challenges. Physical therapy, caregiving assistance, transportation, meal preparation, cleaning, laundry, rent, medications, and other basic living expenses continue to add up while he has no income and no savings. Your support will give Christian the time, stability, and resources he needs to focus entirely on healing so he can one day return to the music career and community he loves.

A Personal Message from Christian

“First, thank you for taking the time to read my story. Thank you to everyone who has prayed for me, reached out, donated, or simply kept me in your thoughts. This has been one of the most surreal and frightening experiences of my life, but the outpouring of love and support from my family, friends, colleagues, students, and community has given me so much hope. I have a long 6–12 months of recovery ahead of me, but I’m committed to doing everything I can to heal and get back on my feet. I look forward to reconnecting with everyone when I’m healthy again. Thank you for being part of my journey.”

The Full Story: The Day That Everything Changed

On June 5, 2026, Christian McGhee woke up and could not walk. Not because it hurt to walk. Not because walking was difficult. Christian literally could not walk. The pain in his lower back was immediate, severe, and debilitating. Standing was nearly impossible. Moving was agonizing.

Fortunately, his roommate Josh was home to help him and contact the EMT’s, who put him into an ambulance. Christian was rushed to Hospital #1, believing he would receive answers and treatment. Instead, the next five days became a nightmare.

Five Days Without Answers

From June 5 through June 10, Christian's condition continued to deteriorate. The pain spread from his lower back into his groin and inner thighs became overwhelming. Simple
movements that most people take for granted became painful and exhausting. Each day brought more fear. Each day brought more frustration. And despite the severity of his symptoms, no diagnosis was found.

Christian and his family repeatedly requested a lower-extremity ultrasound, to rule out dangerous blood clots in his legs and lower body. A simple lower extremity ultrasound was never performed.

Eventually, Hospital #1 discharged him without a diagnosis. Christian appealed the discharge decision in an effort to remain hospitalized and continue searching for answers. The appeal temporarily delayed his release and gave him a few additional days in Hospital #1.

But the appeal was ultimately denied. He was discharged anyway. Still in severe pain. He struggled to stand and to walk a few feet. No answers. No diagnosis. What nobody knew at the time was that dangerous blood clots were continuing to grow exponentially throughout his body.

One Hour Changed Everything

Immediately after being discharged on June 10, Christian went directly to Hospital #2. Everything changed. Within approximately one hour, doctors performed the lower-extremity ultrasound Christian had been requesting. The test revealed extensive and life-threatening blood clots caused by Lupus Anticoagulant (LAC) and Antiphospholipid Syndrome (APS), a rare autoimmune blood-clotting disorder and a blood clot blockage of his Inferior vena cava (IVC), the largest vein in the body. A treating physician later told Christian something he and we will never forget:

Had he not received treatment, he likely would not be alive today. Five days earlier, Christian
thought he had back pain. Now he was fighting for his life.

A Fight for Survival

What followed was not one surgery. Not two surgeries. Christian had three separate thrombectomy surgeries in nine days.

Even after aggressive intervention and powerful clot-dissolving medications, the blood clots continued returning in full force. Christian's vascular surgeons/physicians, removed approximately 111+ inches of blood clots from his legs (lower extremities), which is more than nine feet of blood clots. Doctors are still working to determine the right long-term treatment plan to stop future clot formation and prevent recurrence.

Once medically stable, Christian is expected to spend time in inpatient rehabilitation followed by extensive outpatient physical therapy. Recovery is expected to take up to one year as Christian rebuilds his strength, regains his mobility, and works toward walking independently again.

The Reality Behind the Success

From the outside, it may appear that Christian was winning. The awards. The performances. The businesses. The accomplishments. And in many ways, he was. Christian earned both his Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Manhattan School of Music. He received BMI's Future Jazz Master Award.

He has performed with world-class artists, premiered original works to sold-out audiences, taught students, built businesses, and dedicated his life to helping other people succeed.

But there is another side to the story that very few people know and understand. Like countless artists, freelancers, and entrepreneurs in New York City, Christian has spent years fighting an uphill financial battle. Despite
working relentlessly, performing, teaching, composing, building businesses, applying for jobs, and pursuing every opportunity available to him, he continued falling deeper into debt year after year. Not because he wasn't working. But because the crushing cost of living in New York City steadily outpaced what even relentless hard work could provide, leaving him trapped in a cycle of mounting debt despite giving everything he had.

The reality of New York's extraordinary cost of living, inconsistent freelance income, and an increasingly difficult job market made financial stability feel constantly out of reach.

Christian was already carrying immense financial pressure before this medical crisis happened. Then everything stopped: His ability to work. His ability to earn. His ability to keep building. The bills, however, will keep arriving, while Christian is recovering.

What Christian Was Building

Through ChristianMcGhee.com, Christian built a platform dedicated to performance, education, mentorship, and composition. Through UthMusic.com, he worked to create opportunities for musicians, composers, producers, engineers, and creatives seeking meaningful careers in the arts.

His dream was never simply to build a career for himself. His dream was to create jobs. Create
opportunities. Build community. Help artists create sustainable careers. This medical crisis put all of that at risk.

How We Determined Our Fundraising Goal

This fundraiser is not simply about paying hospital bills. It is about survival. It is about recovery. It is about protecting a bright future that nearly disappeared. The funds raised will help cover medical treatment, surgeries, medications, rehabilitation, physical therapy, housing expenses, lost income,
existing financial obligations, and rebuilding the businesses Christian spent years creating.

Most importantly, these funds will provide six to twelve months of breathing room. Breathing room to heal. Breathing room to recover. Breathing room to search for stable employment. Breathing room to rebuild. Breathing room to focus on getting healthy instead of worrying about how he will survive financially.

How You Can Help

Christian survived something that could have ended very differently. Now he faces the life-long and difficult challenge of rebuilding his life, beginning with regaining his strength, mobility, and independence. If Christian has ever inspired you, taught you, performed for you, collaborated with you, encouraged you, or helped you in any way, we ask you to consider supporting him today. Christian has spent years investing in other people. Now, during the most difficult chapter of his life, we hope our community can invest in him.

Thank you for your generosity,
your prayers, and your support, in advance. Please share with Family, Friends, and Organizations, WHOMEVER . . .
No gift is too small or too large!

Through my platform, I aim to inspire people across New York City and the United States to become stewards of their own communities. Trash Talk NYC serves as guide for responsible, affordable, and accessible urban caretaking.

Using past donations, I have purchased the necessary equipment to coordinate volunteer cleanups safely and efficiently. Now, I need additional funding to form a team and continue this effort into next year. I pursue Trash Talk NYC full-time. However, I do not have the funds to adequately support critical team members who support this mission!

A family we love is going through an unimaginable tragedy. A devastating fire at 207 Dyckman Street has left a mother and her three children—Alexa (18), Alonzo (9), and Alison (5)—hospitalized. The three children are currently intubated and in critical condition after suffering burns and smoke inhalation. The youngest, Alison, was pulled from the building unconscious and had to receive CPR. Their mother is also in the hospital, injured and unable to be by their side the way she would want to be during this heartbreaking time.

In a matter of moments, this family lost everything. Their home is gone along with all of their belongings. They are left without clothing, furniture, and basic necessities. While they fight to recover, they are also facing the reality of having to rebuild their lives from nothing.

We are asking for your help to support this family during this incredibly difficult time. Donations will go toward clothing, essential items, and helping them replace what was lost. Any amount helps. If you are unable to donate, please share this page and keep this family in your prayers. Let’s come together and show them they are not alone. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

3 Siblings Intubated After Devastating fire in Dyckman NY

Dear family, friends, neighbors, and nature lovers:

The Inwood Butterfly Sanctuary is buzzing with life once again and the color of pollinator flowers are beginning to bloom! Monarch butterfly season has officially begun, and we’ve been working hard to prepare a thriving, safe environment for these miraculous pollinators right here in the heart of our beloved Inwood community.

Once a common and inspiring sight, this iconic species are endangered in our area and since 2019 we decided and started to do something about it.

Over the past few months, our small team of dedicated volunteers has invested hundreds of dollars (we’ll be sharing the receipts) and countless hours of hard work into creating and maintaining a vibrant habitat for monarchs and other pollinators in public spaces, mostly focused on our original Sanctuary, situated on the ground of the old Convent of the Good Shepherd, which has become a vital food pantry and community space over the years.

This includes an extensive habitat restoration program to encourage and sustain the migration of monarch butterflies through northern Manhattan, a vital part of the Atlantic “flyway”.

Our efforts also include:

Purchase and propagation from seed of native milkweed and nectar-rich pollinator flowers that will bloom during the season.

Widespread soil amendments, applying nutrient rich soil, mulch, and compost to enrich various gardens, waystations, and street tree beds throughout Inwood.

Gardening tools, materials and supplies needed to do our work and equip our volunteers and visitors: Shovels, gloves. hoses and others needed for planting and maintaining several active habitats and gardens, including portable power tools for efficient, effective. physically intensive work, eg. rechargeable auger drill for planting bulbs, sawzall for cutting hedges and protective barriers

️Portable butterfly enclosures to rear and safely release monarchs.

Ongoing maintenance of our amazing, beloved and very popular “Cycle of Life” monarch butterfly viewing kiosk on a busy street corner that residents pass by daily to watch and keep track of caterpillars as they transform in healthy adult butterflies before their eyes, literally a chance of a lifetime to witness their metamorphosis.

‍Engage the community in stewardship, conservation through numerous educational presentations and tours to local schools

Beautify neighborhood planting native pollinator flowers in marginal spaces and numerous street tree beds as part of our always expanding “Pollinator Pathways” initiatives, which have actively sought to connect small urban gardens, roadway medians, street tree beds, public green spaces and parks.

This initiative to foster optimal microenvironments is described in "We Grow Life" is a citywide initiative to cultivate life and community, transform neglected spaces and protect endangered species: https://www.participate.nyc.gov/processes/Citywidepb2024/f/343/proposals/12003

In upcoming updates, we’ll be sharing more of our projects.

All of this has been done with love, care, and out-of-pocket support from our volunteers and supporters — now we need your help to continue this important work.

Why It Matters:

Monarch butterflies are not just beautiful — they’re essential pollinators whose populations are in serious decline due to habitat loss and climate change. By creating a welcoming environment right here in Inwood, we’re helping to support the monarch’s migratory journey, boost local biodiversity and pollination, and provide environmental education and joy to our community.

Any donation or sharing of our campaign, no matter the size, will make a significant contribution. Together, we can ensure that the Inwood Butterfly Sanctuary continues to serve as a safe haven for monarchs, a sanctuary of beauty and learning for all, and a testament to the importance of preserving biodiversity.

Thank you for being part of this community effort. Let’s keep Inwood blooming — and keep the butterflies coming every season.

With gratitude,

Over the past couple of years, you have helped keep thousands of tennis balls out of landfills by placing them in my recycle bin. THANK YOU. I have been collecting those balls and shipping them to an organization called “RecycleBalls” at my own personal expense. Specifically, RecycleBalls sent me a package of 10 cardboard boxes with pre-paid return-shipping labels attached. Each box holds 200+ balls. I’d collect the balls, fill a box, send it back, collect more balls, fill another box, send it back, etc.

When I began this project, a package of 10 boxes was $200. Now, it’s $475. As much as I would like to continue doing this, the cost is prohibitive. Thus, this appeal. If I could get some help to defray the costs, I will be more than happy to order another 10 boxes. Any amount would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,

Frank Harkin, beloved father, grandfather, uncle, brother, and Inwood neighbor, passed away suddenly on April 6, 2026. His boisterous nature and kind, loving heart will remain in our memories forever.

He loved cooking and all things related to food, the NY Giants, wildlife documentaries, the History Channel, beach days, a good cup of coffee, breakfast at the Capitol Diner, and the many simple pleasures we often take for granted.

Greetings all!

I am a local neighborhood mom and teacher who is working to raise money for Sand Day 2026! Sand Day 2026 is scheduled for May 2, 2026!

The Indian Road Playground is one of my favorite places to hang out with my son and his buddies. We need new sand this year for the sand pit. Additionally, the Sand Day Team would also like to purchase or build a job box for the future. This job box would hold materials for sand day including a screen for sifting sand, a few brooms for sweeping up sand, as well as rakes and gloves. The ultimate goal is to replenish the sand each year. We were quite successful last year and with your help, we can do it again!

The Parks Department is responsible for the upkeep of playgrounds, but not the replenishment and maintenance of sand. That is up to us.

Sand Day is currently scheduled for Saturday, May 2, 2026. The sand will be delivered the night before. Sand Day is a longstanding community event in Inwood. The Parks Department, families, and other community-based organizations all work together to get the old sand out and the new sand in. More details will follow about Sand Day itself, but what we need now is the funding to purchase sand, supplies and a job box or job box materials.

Please contribute what you can to ensure that our children have fresh sand for this spring, summer, and fall. If your family is an IRP family like mine, please contribute what you can. Any money that is not used for sand and job box supplies will be used to buy snacks and supplies for this wonderful event.

Her name was Maria Luísa Perez, and for over 50 years, Washington Heights was her home.

She came from the Dominican Republic and met her husband, Hernan, here. Together, they built a life rooted in love, where she gave everything she had to the people she cherished most. She raised her children with patience and devotion. Whenever we needed her, she was there—no questions asked, with a love that knew no limits. That was simply who she was.

She made everyone around her feel at ease with her humor, her cooking, and her warm presence. She had a way of easing even the hardest moments with a laugh, of showing up for people in ways they didn’t even realize they needed. Taking care of others came as naturally to her as breathing.

She is survived by her beloved husband, Hernan, and her children, Hernanzito, Miladys, Ofelia, and Moises, along with her grandchildren and the many lives she touched over five decades in her community.

The past eight months were incredibly difficult. She was in and out of the hospital, and we gave everything we had to be by her side every step of the way.

We now want to ensure she receives the dignified burial she deserves after a life spent giving so much to others.

Every dollar will go directly toward funeral and burial expenses. Any contribution, no matter the amount, is deeply appreciated. If you are unable to give, simply sharing this page means the world to us.

My name is Felipe Coronel. You guys know me as Immortal Technique. For the past two months, I’ve been conducting food runs to the elderly, the immunocompromised, the disabled, and the mothers with small children across many communities in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, and other New York City areas. The stimulus check is gone. Social security doesn’t always cover the expenses many elders have. New York City runs on tourism, and no one is coming here now. With jobs scarce, a police force in disarray, an ongoing pandemic, mass shortages more commonplace and uncertainty among our people, now is a time more critical than ever to show our love and support to the community.

We forget how many elders in our community are unable to stand on three-hour long lines outside of pharmacies and grocery stores, who are taking care of our grandchildren, and who have taken care of us in our times of need. Imagine that you’re not a young person brimming with confidence and you’re an 80 year old person who grew up with 12 channels on TV. Now every channel tells you something different, some say the virus is a hoax (they then since corrected themselves) or they fear monger without solutions. Many elders are confused and don’t know what to believe from who.

Voting 25 times every century doesn’t create a democracy. It is the institutions that protect the civil liberties of the people that when chipped away at crumble the structure. The elders in our community are the bedrock upon which all of our lives are built on, now more than ever we want to support them. Over the past 8 weeks I have invested almost $10,000 of my own money into the program. All the people who help out are volunteers and 100% of the funds raised will go to food and medical supplies that we deliver to affected communities. As with the Haiti and Afghanistan trips, we will publish all the money spent and received and be transparent with everyone who donated.

The Rebel Army Runs aims to raise roughly $30,000 for a summer long program (or longer if we exceed our goal) where we deliver a weeks worth of food, canned goods, feminine products, diapers, supplies and basic children’s medicine to a suffering community every week in NYC and LA. I have done this in others countries, and all it took was a few people working and a lot of voices spreading the word. If you can donate a few dollars, it's very much apprciated, but if layoffs, COVID and/or closed business have put you in a bad place, you can help by sharing this link so others can pitch in and help out.

I really appreciate the love and support over the years for all the Rebel Army missions. We hit Houston during the floods, we left water for kids crossing the desert in Arizona, we stood with water protectors at Standing Rock, and now we will be servicing the elderly, the mothers, the disabled and the immunocompromised of our communities to make sure they have enough to hold them down during this mitigated catastrophe. Peace.

Here are the potential medical costs my brother and I are facing, as we are both dealing with the same disease:

IVIG - $140,000

PLEX - $200,000

Total - $340,000

Since September 2021, I’ve been experiencing radical symptoms of encephalopathy, from hallucinations and extreme paranoia to visual disturbances and psychosis. It’s been a grueling path getting blood work, a spinal tap, being misdiagnosed as bipolar in the psych ward, seeing many neurologists, and now finally getting some treatment. In April of 2022, I received 3 high-dose steroid infusions, which significantly improved symptoms but did not result in full resolution. In July of 2022, I received an additional 3 days of IV steroids. This time there was no improvement. While our working diagnosis is autoimmune encephalitis, or severe brain inflammation, we lack the necessary specific markers to confirm the diagnosis. Instead, we are forced to view treatment as experimental.

The next step in treatment is IVIG, a costly medication that insurance is unlikely to cover given my lack of specific markers. Cost out of pocket is likely to be around $70k per person, or $140k total for my brother and me. If we have a partial response, then PLEX (plasma exchange) would be the next first-line treatment, which would total $100k each. We will likely have to pay the sum of these bills out-of-pocket because our elevated markers (particularly elevated protein in the spinal fluid, indicating brain damage) are non-specific for encephalitis, meaning insurance won't want to cover it. I have been out of work for a year due to this illness. The total cost for treatments is a significant financial stretch for my family, considering both my twin brother and I have this condition. We don’t know if we’ll need to pursue further treatment after IVIG or start looking for a diagnosis from scratch if we have no response. There are a lot of unknowns, but what is certain is our path to health will be expensive. So I’m here asking for some support for medical bills, this upcoming treatment, and money to continue paying normal life bills. Thank you.

On the morning of Monday May 2, 2022, a fire occurred at Saigon Social. The restaurant is temporarily closed while damages are being assessed and repairs can be made. If you’ve been following the journey of Saigon Social, you will know how heartbreaking this is for its owner Helen Nguyen, for us as her friends and for the members of the Saigon Social community, including its staff, its patrons, and all the people she has selflessly helped over the last two years.

Since the very beginning, Saigon Social, a restaurant that has only ever existed in a pandemic, has been faced with hardship, with one incident after another. From gas outages, sudden shutdowns, labor shortages, Helen’s journey with Saigon Social was documented by Gary He for the New York Times and what touched all of us was not only her perseverance through tough times, but her heart and sincere kindness. In what has been extremely difficult times for the elderly Asian community, Helen has been a shining light for them. She cooks for Asian seniors who look forward to her meals every week as part of Heart of Dinner and Feed Forward, two organizations focused on fighting food insecurity. She regularly makes sure Mr Chen, an elderly man who collects cans near her restaurant, is fed and taken care of. When he was assaulted during a time of increased Anti-Asian hate crimes, she hosted a pop up event and raised funds for him.

At the start of the pandemic, she served comfort meals to frontline hospital workers and through her takeout window, she donated food to anyone in need even though her restaurant was operating at a loss and had not yet opened for dining service.

The list of what Helen has given to the community goes on and on. Our point is that Helen cooks with love. She is a true community leader who has set an example for all of us: to be kind and to give back no matter what.

Damages to the restaurant are being assessed, but we have set a $75,000 fundraising goal as a starting point to contribute towards the cost of repairs and the costs associated with keeping her restaurant afloat, including taking care of restaurant staff who will be out of work while the restaurant is closed.

Saigon Social is more than just a restaurant. It's a place of love, community and belonging. Please give what you can to help her rebuild her restaurant and sustain her team as soon as possible because it is undeniably clear that Saigon Social makes the community a better place. Helen shows up for the community every day and it’s time for us to show up for her.

Please help him fund his dreams of attending Juilliard and support his devotion towards music.

Undertaking study at a world class institution in the USA is incredibly expensive. Fortunately, Mebrakh has been offered a full scholarship to study classical music at The Juilliard School; however, this does not cover the full cost of the 2 years he will be studying there. Please don't think that your kindness is too small. See below for Juilliard Scholarship Letter and Projected Costs.

MEBRAKH’S STORY:

Mebrakh first encountered the clarinet, towards the end of his primary school education, his teacher brought her instrument in for ‘show and tell’. It was broken so she couldn’t really play a tune but, it was enough to captivate him. From that moment, Mebrakh knew he had to get one!

“My birthday was fast approaching; I was given the option to buy a second-hand clarinet or the latest games console which, at the time, was a Nintendo DS. Without hesitation, I chose the clarinet. From there, I taught myself some pieces with the ‘A New Tune A Day’ book and performed these at the Year 6 end of year party!

My secondary school had a scheme that required all incoming students to learn an instrument. I ended up choosing the cello as urged by my family; perhaps they weren’t fond of the relentless squeaking that came with me learning the clarinet…
Alongside this, I was offered some saxophone lessons as there was a vacancy.

I started having actual clarinet lessons in Year 9 at the age of 14 with the introduction of a new teacher. I very much enjoyed my clarinet lessons but would never practise my scales.
The school didn’t have an orchestra so I played in their wind group and jazz band during breaks and after school. I also went, on Monday evenings, to a jazz improvisation class - at World Heart Beat Music Academy - which was a great way to keep my saxophone skills up.

Towards the end of Year 12, I was told that Saturday music centres and youth orchestras were a thing! I applied to a centre, for a very late audition, and they made an exception and decided to see me. I was fortunate to be admitted with a full scholarship and finally, at 18, I experienced the unique; life-changing experience of playing with an orchestra.

My school loaned me an old pair of donated clarinets for use during my gap year. I didn’t yet own a pair and wanted to continue studying at the Saturday centre.

At this point, I had already been volunteering at a hospital and witnessed open heart surgery among many other medical procedures for work experience; I was excited to go down the medical route. However, I proceeded with the subject that I most enjoyed which was, of course, music.

As I was auditioning for music colleges, I decided to take my ABRSM Grade 8 Clarinet and Saxophone exams. This was probably the most I had ever practised, for anything, at that point! Much to my delight, I received 2 distinctions in my exams and admission with scholarships to all the institutions to which I applied.

I accepted a full-tuition scholarship at Royal College of Music and Lady Victoria Robey OBE was incredibly kind to buy me an alto saxophone and a pair of clarinets – my first professional-level instruments.

It was in my first year at RCM that I watched Chineke! Junior Orchestra perform at Queen Elizabeth Hall, Southbank Centre. I had never attended a classical concert outside of school before. I remember them playing Coleridge-Taylor and Grieg; the concert gave me goosebumps.
I contacted Chineke! Foundation immediately to see if I could land an audition or get involved in any way.
Chi-chi accepted my request, auditioned me via zoom and gave me the opportunity to play in some of their upcoming festivals and concerts. I had never felt more at home.

Since then, I have been fortunate to perform with Chineke! Orchestra and Chineke! Chamber Ensemble for CD and on stages worldwide, amongst other ensembles including my BBC Prom debut with Nu Civilisation Orchestra. I look forward to returning on stage with NCO for the Queen’s Jubilee at Queen Elizabeth Hall in June.

More recently, the final week of February to Mid-March was certainly my busiest patch yet. I had to prepare over 20 separate pieces of music, in total. This included repertoire for an orchestral project with Chineke!, my Juilliard audition in NYC and two programmes worth of chamber music for the tour with Chineke! Chamber Ensemble to Adelaide Festival, South Australia.

A day after returning from Australia, I received notification that I was successful in my audition and I then accepted a full scholarship to study for my Master of Music degree at the renowned Juilliard School. This was a huge blessing; I am so grateful to everyone that has supported me throughout my studies, and I am ever so excited for the next stage of my journey. I would like to thank you all for your kindness and support on this next chapter, THANK YOU SO MUCH! I feel very honoured”

Help Mebrakh Get To Juilliard School of Music

Earlier this month, after an irregular doctors appt our beloved Sam received the devastating news of Stage 1 Cervical Cancer. This means she needs surgery to remove a part of her cervix as soon as possible. This also means she had to make the incredibly painful decision of doing this for her health knowing it will take away all possibility to have children.

While grieving for herself, Sam also had to endure another terrible loss when her beloved cat Dill passed away at only 4 months old. This was a cat so dear to Sam and it has been devastating to see her go through this loss and now have to compete with a massive vet bill.

We are looking for any help for Sam during this time. This support will help her cover her medical costs which will be significantly larger if she has to go out of network in order to find a doctor to do the surgery before it spreads. It will also help Sam to be able to take time off work, as well as to get the therapy she needs.

Sam is one of the kindest, selfless and bright humans we know and she needs our help right now. Any donations are greatly appreciated and I know Sam is feeling so loved and lifted by our community.

Hello I am Hannah Friesen, a Canadian-American soprano.

I graduated from Manhattan School of Music with a Master’s degree in classical voice in spring of 2019 and continued to live and work in NYC until the pandemic. This season of uncertainly took its toll on the performing arts and with so many changes in circumstance, I reluctantly left NYC feeling somewhat lost and defeated unsure of what my future in opera would look like.

At the beginning of 2021 I decided to take a chance and move to Philadelphia where several of my colleagues from the opera world had also relocated. In Philly I could continue my opera training with the same vocal teachers and coaches I’d worked with in Manhattan, now as a Principal Artist with the International School of the Voice.

I could not be more grateful for this twist in my journey. As much as I loved my time in NYC, these last five months have allowed so many opportunities to flourish musically and professionally. As a young artist, I continue to make progress and as a result I’m delighted to now have the opportunity to train with the International School of the Voice (ISV) in Europe this summer. I couldn’t be happier! What an exciting next step for my growth as a performer in the early stages of my opera career.

In celebration of this wonderful opportunity, I am recording a private recital as a fundraiser to help supplement the cost of international travel to make this summer’s vocal studies abroad possible. All ticket proceeds will contribute to travel expenses, housing, food, master classes, Italian & German classes, vocal & diction coachings, and voice lessons while living and studying in Europe.

I could not be more grateful for the circle of supporters who have encouraged my progress throughout my years of education. Now as I focus on launching my professional work as an opera singer, I’m deeply grateful for the wonderful ways in which dreams become reality!

[transcription of video further down below]

My name is Hana Yoshimoto and my pronouns are she/they. I am here to ask for your help in supporting Umeko Motoyoshi, as they are under a huge amount of financial stress and pressure related to astronomical unforeseen business expenses. Although we are unrelated, they are my dear friend and mentor, as well as an impactful member of the coffee community. Umeko has been in coffee for 14 years as a barista, manager, trainer, and espresso technician. They have also designed instant coffee manufacturing systems and participated in barista competitions. In 2018, Umeko launched Umeshiso, selling rainbow cupping spoons. This was the first of many ways in which they would continue to make the industry a more welcoming space for all.

In addition to their retail business, Umeko is an author, consultant, podcast host, and community organizer. They are candid about their experiences with mental health diagnoses and vocal about their journey in learning about anti-blackness and racism. Umeko actively works towards becoming a better advocate and ally for all people of marginalized identities. The work that they do is so powerful and incredibly necessary as we move forward in making coffee a more equal, sustainable, and welcoming industry. Through all of this work, Umeko has truly done an incredible job of uplifting so many coffee professionals and small businesses. Their compassion and generosity are some of their greatest gifts and now it is time for them to be on the receiving end of the kind of support that they have given to so many others. Please join me in helping Umeko so that they can continue to serve our community.

“I’m just trying to grow my platform so that more people can stand on it.”

Hi! My name is Umeko. My pronouns are they/them and she/her and I sell rainbow spoons for a living. I also help some small businesses with their social media. I write articles about coffee sometimes. And overall, I have a lot of projects. But with everything that I do, I apply the same ethos of wanting my products and services to be as affordable as possible for people who don’t have a ton of money. Like my spoons, I sell on a sliding scale and offer rates that are very affordable. So as a result, I work all the time. I work seven days a week, but I never really have any money. And that’s been okay with me because I don’t need a lot, but this month I have had a cascade of really disastrous luck that has resulted in $4,000 of unforeseen business expenses. And that represents all of the money that I had to pay my rent, to buy food, let alone covering my operating expenses for my business for the next month and a half. So the next month and a half is just a big question mark for me and I am scared. And I can’t work any more than I am already working to make any extra money. There just aren’t enough hours in the day and I need help.

2020 has been really hard for everyone and for small businesses and my business is no exception to that. I didn’t qualify for PPP loan. I don’t know why but I didn’t. I have just been trying my best to make it work. I saved as much money as I could and placed my biggest order of spoons yet and felt really nervous and scared about but just was like “okay, i am going to go for it”. I work with this awesome small factory in China and they custom make all my spoons for me. I have a huge amount of trust in them and was just like “okay, we are going to do it. We are going to go for it”. The shipment had all of these issues with FedEx and with customs and there were all of these communication problems. I have been on the phone for like 5 days straight just trying to understand what is happening with the shipment and it is now being returned to China and then they have to ship it back to me a second time. And that is a delay and that’s too bad, but the huge issue is that I have to pay for the return shipping to China and the shipping back to the US. That is $4,000 and again, that’s all the money that I have.

So now, I am just in the hole and I don’t know how I am going to survive, basically. For the next month and a half, I just, it’s just a big question mark. So that is why I am asking for your help. I wish that I could do it by myself you know, and I have feelings of embarrassment over having to ask for help like this, but I just need help right now. Anything that you have at all, to contribute any way that you can support, I really really appreciate it. I really appreciate you taking the time to watch this and if you have a few dollars, even just a little bit, anything would be so appreciated. If you are able to share this on your social media, that would be really really helpful. I just appreciate you and I appreciate you taking the time and I want to say thank you. And I am just hoping that, you know, we’re like gonna get through this.

Umeko Needs Support

Hello,

We wanted to let everyone know how much we appreciate everyones generosity. Thank you all a million times. The campaign was a huge success thanks to all of you wonderful people that donated and that shared the story. Everyone is starting to find new places to call home for now and your kindness is definitely going to help. The funds will be divided evenly among the 4 of them so they can begin again.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart!!

Hello,

I’m starting a GoFund Me Page for my friends and coworkers, Thum, Gin, Paul and Yui, who are have been dealing with both unexpected unemployment and the aftermath of a devastating fire that broke out in the Queens building they live in.

We are restaurant workers in New York City, and like the rest of our community have been both struggling with the impact of the pandemic and gratified by the outpouring of assistance and compassion shown by the citizens of our awesome city. Our company closed its doors on March 14th and since then we have all been effectively unemployed. If you know Thum, Gin, Paul and Yui, you know what kind, bright and positive people they are, always reaching out to their former coworkers and friends to check in on them, providing humor, love and friendship and trusting they would get back up off their feet. Even as they have struggled to obtain unemployment assistance because of the overwhelmed system they have always counted themselves as lucky, that they were healthy, and looking forward to the day they could start working and return to some sense of normalcy.

Unfortunately, on the morning of May 8th, Gin woke up to the smell of smoke in her bedroom. She immediately jumped up and woke her roommate Thum. Smoke and flames were eating up her wall. They tried putting out the fire with buckets of water but were quickly overwhelmed by the smoke and heat and rushed out of the apartment along with the rest of the building, including their upstairs neighbors, Paul and Yui. When the smoke cleared, the four of them realized that absolutely everything they owned was lost, save the PJs and slippers they had run out in.

They are thankful they are alive and are keeping up their spirits, but I know the anxiety and sense of loss is weighing heavily on them. I can only imagine what it must be like, living through this pandemic, knowing the virus is thriving in our city, and then losing the one safe sanctuary you have in the city. Imagine losing your favorite shirt, the old pictures of your childhood, of your friends and family, all the things that provided comfort as we have all struggled through the last few months, even your sense of home. Now they have to recoup and figure out how to start over, with our industry shut down for the foreseeable future.

I know there are so many people out there facing challenges right now, and suffering anxiety about what comes next. But if you can contribute just a little something to offer some relief and hope, it would go a long way. They will be needing to start over from zero. Anything will help them rebuild the most basic needs is life like clothes and a new place to live.

We thank you from the bottom of our hearts!

Initially centred around a residency hosted by Brisbane-based sound art duo Clocked Out (Vanessa Tomlinson and Erik Griswold) at Queensland Conservatorium, our booked cities soon expanded beyond Brisbane to cover Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, and the Tyalgum Music Festival. In order to grow and expand the group’s artistic ethos on an international scale, we are particularly looking forward to:

- Collaborating with young Australian composers, workshopping and performing commissioned works in all major cities
- Working with Aussie-based musicians who share our vision of music-making and collaboration
- Masterclasses and workshops aimed at vocalists, percussionists, and composers, focusing on forward-thinking artistic and sonic concepts developed by such influential figures as Peter Ablinger, Anthony Braxton, Danny Clay, Annea Lockwood, Alvin Lucier, Pauline Oliveros, and others
- Presenting American works never before heard in Australia to audiences that would otherwise rarely get the chance to experience relevant, varied, and conceptual programs of experimental music

Flying halfway across the world is no feat that can be accomplished on love, dedication and artistry alone -- this is where you come in! To make this tour a reality so that all involved may benefit, we are looking for financial assistance for our greatest expenses:

- International and domestic travel
- Venue rentals - Glebe Town Hall (NSW), Adelaide Maritime Museum (SA), Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Arts (QLD) and more!
- Percussion equipment rentals

Through our focuses in artistic mindfulness, inclusivity, and diversity, we work to highlight the imperative roles that experiences with experimental art have in both disrupting the status quo of Western art music and allowing urgent critical perspectives to be heard and acted upon. With your support, we will make a lasting impression on the Australian arts scene at large. Thank you for your support of the creation and international promulgation of new and experimental music.

Devin Moore is a 20-year old violist from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania currently studying Classical Viola Performance at the Manhattan School of Music in New York City. He has recently been accepted to the Juilliard School to continue his studies with his private teacher: Samuel Rhodes. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Devin to study at one of the best music conservatories in the world with his amazing teacher, introducing a brand-new world of musical opportunities and endeavors. Though he is very grateful for the scholarships he has received, the remaining costs and expenses are too much, even after loans and work study is taken into consideration. With his current financial situation (single mother supporting two children, one income, etc.), Devin is not able to afford the remaining expenses, even with the assistance of outside scholarships. Help Devin achieve his goal of being able to study at the Juilliard School this coming fall. Any amount is cherished and appreciated.

Music means the world to Devin and it is his ultimate lifetime goal to pursue it at the highest level possible. Thank you for your continued help and support.
Update: As per the advice of friends & new developments, we have decided to continue fundraising. There will be legal and medical expenses that we did not account for. The process is long, and they need the help. I have also learned that for freelance musicians, it is an upheaval battle to get new leases because of the extraordinary requirements from most landlords.

Message from Henry Cole: here

Thank you very much, everyone, for your support and for your messages to Henry and Natalia sent via this and other communication outlets (social networks, texts, calls).

Thank you so much for sharing Henry's and Natalia's story; thank you for donating; and thank you for your messages of love, support, and hope! I have known Henry for over twenty years—and I consider him family. They are currently living in a hotel thanks to the Red Cross and will be with friends (including me) as they try to redo their entire life. Sgt. Daniel Pedersen US Marine Corps (ret.)

This is Dan Pedersen, a 24 year old Sergeant who just finished his 5 year tour of duty, with the US Marine Corps. He was stationed at Camp Pendleton, and served in the Middle East and in the South Pacific theater. He was officially discharged from the military on February 3rd, 2018.

Shortly after returning home Dan developed a cough. He worked through the pain and discomfort but knew he needed further medical attention. Doctors found a tumor in his right lung on April 26th. Dan then had his first surgery on April 29, 2018 and was diagnosed with a small cell Neuroendocrine Tumor. It is extremely rare to find this form of aggressive metastatic cancer in such a healthy young man. He has chosen a special form of immunotherapy, that is not covered by his insurance. This therapy includes two-three years of strict adherence to a personalized medical protocol. Through many miracles Dan is able to travel to receive these treatments.

Currently, Dan is working as a certified EMS provider in downtown Salt Lake City for a ambulance agency. One of his many aspirations includes attending nursing school to further his education within the medical field. With proper treatment, Dan will still be able to accomplish these goals, have a family and live a normal, healthy life.

Dan's friends and family have set up this GOFUNDME.COM account for the purpose of raising funds needed for this specialized immunotherapy treatment. Dan is highly motivated and positive. With your support, we know he can beat this cancer.

Thank you all for your love and for your support in this very unexpected and challenging life development. If you would like to contact Dan, please send him a personal message. US Marine battling cancer

Hey everybody! This is pretty lengthy, but I wanted to be as authentic as possible.

As most of you probably now know, a few years ago I finally had the courage to change my major to Music Performance to pursue my true passion: singing. The past few years have been some of the most amazing and challenging years of my life. Both I and my voice have come a long way. Within the past couple of months, I have been presented with the opportunity to audition for the best voice/opera programs in the country: Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University, University of Connecticut School of Fine Arts, Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, University of Michigan School of Music, and Manhattan School of Music. The costs for this trip include airfare, transportation to and from the airport, food, and a small amount just in case of an emergency. So far, I have been able to purchase airfare for my trips to Indiana and Connecticut, my first two auditions. Fortunately, I have been able to make arrangments to stay with both friends and friends of friends during my travels. I truly believe that I have the potential to make it one day, and this is the next necessary step in the development of my voice/performance skills and in my career. My current goals as a vocalist are to become a successful recording artist, a world-renowned performer, and to one day perform at the Metropolitan Opera. I want to make everyone that has come into my life proud, to bring people happiness and love through this gift that I have been given, and to be able to provide financially for myself, my family, and others doing what I love.

The past few years have been difficult ones for me and my family, especially this past year. Last spring, my father was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. There was only one doctor in the nation that could safely perform the procedure necessary to save him, causing my parents to effectively move to Houston for three and a half months. I lived with my family at the time, so they were also continuing to pay rent on the house we lived in here in Fairbanks, with me helping out wherever and whenever I could. My father's illness forced him to have to retire earlier than planned, and one of the stipulations of his retirement was that the government send him back to our home state of Texas. They left last month and are now looking for a house there. As I still had a year left of school to complete (graduating this May!), I had to find a new place to stay. Luckily, a close friend had just bought a house and I moved in, renting one of the rooms. Rent is very reasonable but, as I am only able to work part time, it is still quite difficult to make the payments.

In September, my sister passed away after struggling with an illness for a few months. It was a huge blow for all of us emotionally, and she will be sorely missed (although we believe that she's now in a much better place!). It also placed upon us a huge financial burden, as she did not have life insurance. Plans we had for our dividends suddenly went out of the window as we had to make arrangements for my sister's funeral, as well as other expenses, such as travelling to Texas for the funeral. These things, in addition to other extemporaneous expenses throughout the year (such as my dad travelling back to Texas for check-ups with his doctor prior to them permanently moving there) have made this year difficult.

In addition to rent, I must also pay the rest of my tuition for the semester. After I return from auditions (March 1st), I will have to make a payment on my tuition and will have two payments remaining (April 1st and May 1st adding up to 3,052.25 total). I only have one semester left, and would love to be able to graduate on time.

Any amount you can donate will be much appreciated. Admittedly, it is somewhat embarrassing for me to do this - I was always taught to keep one's private life private and to try and be as self-sufficient as possible. But at this point I undeniably need help. As the old adage goes, it takes a village. I know that many of you believe in my gift and career; the support and encouragement I have received over the past few years has been immensely humbling and I am forever grateful for it. I don't want any of that to be in vain. Thank you so much for your time.

With much, much love,

Elijah/Jay

P.S. If you'd like to take a listen to what you'd be funding, here are some recordings of me!! I'll be uploading more later.

Dear Friends,

I'm reaching out to you because we're starting a GoFundMe campaign for James K. Larsen and Rainer of Hazlet, NJ. Jim is suffering from neck and spine injuries which cause severe chronic pain and weakness in his extremities. In September 2017 Jim underwent his 3rd operation in the cervical spine to remove multiple herniated discs which were impinging on his spinal chord. He still requires surgery to his lumbar spine but due to current circumstances he has to push that off as the risk is very high. Jim has to be constantly medicated for pain relief in order to function daily.

Jim currently has medical bills totaling 28K thousand dollars.

Jim has been out of work since September, recommended by his doctors in order to maximize the probability of healing. Jim has been living off temporary disability which pays $315.00 a week.

On November 17, 2017, Jim’s wife Diane Larsen, 44, tragically passed away. Diane was born on June 9, 1973 in Long Branch, New Jersey and grew up in Keyport, New Jersey. She was an amazing person. She lit up a room, made everyone smile. In 2005, she settled in Hazlet, New Jersey and on October 14, 2006, Diane and James, were married and began their life together.

Jim and Diane’s son Rainer is now 10 years old.

Diane’s funeral was on November 25, 2017 at the Shore Point Funeral Home http://www.shorepointfh.com/notices/Diane-Larsen.

Funeral expenses total 10 thousand dollars. Unfortunately there is no life insurance. And all expenses fell on Jim's shoulders.

GoFundMe link:
https://www.gofundme.com/relief-for-jim-and-his-son-rainer

If you could support our GoFundMe campaign for Jim Larsen and Rainer by making a donation and then sharing it with your network, it would greatly be appreciated. I know that money can be tight, so please know that even $5 helps to provide mercy to this loving family. Let us know if you have any questions and we’ll be happy to answer them.

Please keep Jim and Rainer in your prayers.
