On June 5, 2026, Christian woke up with excruciating lower back pain and suddenly couldn’t stand or walk. What initially seemed like a mysterious injury quickly became a life-threatening medical emergency. Over the following weeks, doctors discovered massive blood clots throughout his legs and pelvis caused by two rare clotting disorders: Antiphospholipid Syndrome (APS) and Lupus Anticoagulant. To save his life, surgeons performed three emergency thrombectomy surgeries in just nine days, removing an astonishing 111 inches of blood clots from his body.
Christian is incredibly grateful to be alive, but his journey is far from over. His doctors expect 6–12 months of recovery as he rebuilds his strength, regains his mobility, and works toward walking independently again. During this time, he is unable to work or earn an income and is currently unable to care for himself independently, relying on others for everyday tasks such as showering, transportation, meal preparation, cleaning, laundry, and other essential daily needs. He now depends on these services simply to get through each day while he focuses on healing.
While insurance has covered much of the emergency medical care, recovery itself comes with overwhelming financial challenges. Physical therapy, caregiving assistance, transportation, meal preparation, cleaning, laundry, rent, medications, and other basic living expenses continue to add up while he has no income and no savings. The Full Story: The Day That Everything Changed
On June 5, 2026, Christian McGhee woke up and could not walk. Not because it hurt to walk. Not because walking was difficult. Christian literally could not walk. The pain in his lower back was immediate, severe, and debilitating. Standing was nearly impossible. Moving was agonizing.
Fortunately, his roommate Josh was home to help him and contact the EMT’s, who put him into an ambulance. Christian was rushed to Hospital #1, believing he would receive answers and treatment. Instead, the next five days became a nightmare.
Five Days Without Answers
From June 5 through June 10, Christian's condition continued to deteriorate. The pain spread from his lower back into his groin and inner thighs became overwhelming. Simple movements that most people take for granted became painful and exhausting. Each day brought more fear. Each day brought more frustration. And despite the severity of his symptoms, no diagnosis was found.
Christian and his family repeatedly requested a lower-extremity ultrasound, to rule out dangerous blood clots in his legs and lower body. A simple lower extremity ultrasound was never performed.
Eventually, Hospital #1 discharged him without a diagnosis. Christian appealed the discharge decision in an effort to remain hospitalized and continue searching for answers. The appeal temporarily delayed his release and gave him a few additional days in Hospital #1.
But the appeal was ultimately denied. He was discharged anyway. Still in severe pain. He struggled to stand and to walk a few feet. No answers. No diagnosis. What nobody knew at the time was that dangerous blood clots were continuing to grow exponentially throughout his body.
One Hour Changed Everything
Immediately after being discharged on June 10, Christian went directly to Hospital #2. Everything changed. Within approximately one hour, doctors performed the lower-extremity ultrasound Christian had been requesting. The test revealed extensive and life-threatening blood clots caused by Lupus Anticoagulant (LAC) and Antiphospholipid Syndrome (APS), a rare autoimmune blood-clotting disorder and a blood clot blockage of his Inferior vena cava (IVC), the largest vein in the body. A treating physician later told Christian something he and we will never forget:
Had he not received treatment, he likely would not be alive today. Five days earlier, Christian thought he had back pain. Now he was fighting for his life.
A Fight for Survival
What followed was not one surgery. Not two surgeries. Christian had three separate thrombectomy surgeries in nine days.
Even after aggressive intervention and powerful clot-dissolving medications, the blood clots continued returning in full force. Christian's vascular surgeons/physicians, removed approximately 111+ inches of blood clots from his legs (lower extremities), which is more than nine feet of blood clots. Doctors are still working to determine the right long-term treatment plan to stop future clot formation and prevent recurrence.
Once medically stable, Christian is expected to spend time in inpatient rehabilitation followed by extensive outpatient physical therapy. Recovery is expected to take up to one year as Christian rebuilds his strength, regains his mobility, and works toward walking independently again.

From the outside, it may appear that Christian was winning. The awards. The performances. The businesses. The accomplishments. And in many ways, he was. Christian earned both his Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Manhattan School of Music. He received BMI's Future Jazz Master Award.
He has performed with world-class artists, premiered original works to sold-out audiences, taught students, built businesses, and dedicated his life to helping other people succeed.
But there is another side to the story that very few people know and understand. Like countless artists, freelancers, and entrepreneurs in New York City, Christian has spent years fighting an uphill financial battle. Despite working relentlessly, performing, teaching, composing, building businesses, applying for jobs, and pursuing every opportunity available to him, he continued falling deeper into debt year after year. Not because he wasn't working. But because the crushing cost of living in New York City steadily outpaced what even relentless hard work could provide, leaving him trapped in a cycle of mounting debt despite giving everything he had.
