On the morning of June 9, 2026, Salem’s mom found him lying on the floor of her home, crying and unable to get up. He was dragging his back right leg behind him. She thought it was broken. Salem is a neutered male domestic shorthair, not quite two years old. Black as ink, gold-eyed, and until that morning, a completely normal, bouncy young cat. She got him to San Benito Veterinary Center in Hollister right away. The news wasn’t a break — it was worse in some ways. The head of Salem’s femur, the ball at the top of the thigh bone that fits into the hip socket, is necrotic. The bone is dying. The joint is diseased, and every step he takes is painful. The fix is a femoral head ostectomy (FHO). The surgeon removes the dead femoral head, and over the following weeks the leg muscles and scar tissue form a “false joint” that carries the leg comfortably. It’s a well-established surgery, and cats are the ideal patients for it — small, light, and athletic. Salem would run, jump, and climb again. She got him in, got him diagnosed, and is paying out of pocket for his pain medication to keep him comfortable. But the surgery is beyond what she can manage. The estimate from San Benito Veterinary Center runs $1,732 to $1,977, and the clinic requires a deposit at the high end of the estimate before they will book the surgery date. That’s the wall she hit. Babe’s Fund is stepping in to help her get over it. On April 28, 2026, a little dachshund mix was found wandering near Central Avenue in Hollister, CA. She was microchipped. Someone had loved her once — but no one came. Hollister Police Animal Care & Services took her in and named her Jolene. For weeks she showed up at community events in her yellow "Adopt Me" bandana, looking up at everyone with those big brown eyes, tail wagging, still willing to trust. She never stopped hoping. Then Jolene got sick. She began vomiting and the Hollister Police & Animal Services team rushed her immediately to San Benito Veterinary Center — partners in this work who believe in these animals as much as we do, and who give Babe's Fund a discount because of it. Parvo test: negative. But radiographs revealed a dangerous intestinal blockage. Her foster mom Olivia noticed something in her vomit — blanket material. Jolene had eaten her blankie.  Not a corner. Not a nibble. THE WHOLE BLANKIE. Without emergency surgery, she would not survive. San Benito Veterinary Center performed a gastroenterotomy and lavage — $2,129 to $2,211 — and saved her life. Jolene pulled through like the absolute warrior she is. The blankie did not survive. We have said our goodbyes to the beloved blankie and Jolene was recovering beautifully. And then something extraordinary happened. Our friend Danna from Portola Valley saw Jolene's face. And she came immediately. Here's why this will stop your heart completely. Danna knows this kind of love — and this kind of loss. She had a beloved Weiner dog named Eddie who was taken by a coyote in Portola Valley. If you know, you know. That kind of grief doesn't leave you. It became a wound in Danna, and in an entire community that mourned right alongside her. The kind of heart wound that never fully heals. And then she saw Jolene. They say your beloved dog sends you the next one. We believe that with everything we have. Eddie saw this little blankie-eating, Adopt Me bandana-wearing, never-stop-hoping dachshund in Hollister — and sent Danna straight to her. Jolene is now Chocho Sun. Beautiful butterfly in Japanese.  Chocho for short. This morning, Chocho Sun moved to Portola Valley. Quite a leap from our beloved little Hollister. We are so full of joy that we can barely stand it. But we still need your help. Chocho's emergency surgery was real, and the bill is still real. Help a Shot & Injured Stray Get the Surgery She Needs A Hollister Animal Control officer found her lying on the pavement — unable to stand, disoriented, and in pain. She is a 10-year-old stray female cat, and she had been shot with BB pellets. One is lodged dangerously close to her spine, which is almost certainly causing her hind-leg weakness and loss of coordination. As if that weren't enough, she also has a large abdominal hernia — a serious tear in her body wall that can trap internal organs and is life-threatening without surgical repair. X-rays confirmed the BB pellets and hernia. No broken bones were found. Despite everything she has endured, she arrived at San Benito Vet Center stable and alert. Her veterinarian believes that with surgery and a loving indoor home, she can still have a wonderful quality of life. But first, she needs to make it through the operating room.
