Like so many families during the summer, E, J, and their children had taken a trip to the beach in Ocean City, MD. After enjoying a meal, their vacation quickly ended when ICE appeared behind them on the drive back to their rental. J was ripped away from his family, and for several days, they did not know where he was. Sadly, they learned that after moving from detention in Virginia to Texas, he was deported back to Honduras. J is a loving family man who enjoyed taking his three kids to the park to kick the soccer ball (football) around or just staying home to watch a game. The family would attend church each week and then go out to eat after. However, with the fear of further abductions, all of that has now stopped. The younger children do not understand why their dad is gone or why their routines have changed. While E does work, J was the primary breadwinner, so she needs help paying rent and other bills and getting the kids ready for the upcoming school year. In 2012, L came to the US from Honduras to escape gun violence and worked hard to build a stable life for her family. That life was shattered this past summer. During a routine immigration check-in, L was unexpectedly detained and later deported to Honduras, leaving behind four heartbroken children (ages 15, 9, 3, and 2 years). L’s mother, M, dropped everything to support her daughter, taking unpaid leave from work to care for her grandchildren and fight for L’s case. Unfortunately, M’s health has suffered during this time, as she lost her health insurance and can no longer access her primary doctor to care for her diabetes. Young children need their mother. Jose has recently been released, but Alejandro, who had called the United States home since he was a little boy, has been deported. Their detention has wildly disrupted their family life. Wife and mother Norma has been left behind to care for the remaining five children, ranging in age from 2 to 16 years, as Jose has not yet been able to secure a new job since his release. As a family, the children enjoyed visiting the park with their parents and cooking together. Norma has struggled to cover the ongoing household expenses, while Jose continues to search for a job. While walking the 50 feet from his front door to his truck, ICE agents approached Alejandro from both directions of the street. He was able to quickly call his wife, Carmen, who stepped out onto the sidewalk to take his phone and wallet. He was then placed in an ICE vehicle and taken to detention. He has been moved multiple times and is now in a facility in California, across the entire continental U.S. from his wife and child. A lawyer has been retained, but the road ahead is long. Alejandro’s teenage daughter, Stefany, describes him as a “good father” and a “good worker” — she and her mother are devastated by this separation. Compounding the loss of Alejandro is Stefany’s medical needs. Stefany was born with Morquio Syndrome Type A, a rare metabolic bone disorder. She needs weekly infusions, occupational therapy, and other medical treatments. Her father was her champion: he took her to appointments and helped her navigate life with this complex condition, including being the main contact for her school. On top of this, Alejandro worked six days a week, providing for his family. He is also missed by Max, the family’s beloved Husky. It was Dad who did the dog walking. Quite simply, the whole world has been turned upside down for this family.
