Help a 45-Year-Old Woman Fight Cancer While Rebuilding Her Life

Life can change in an instant, and for me, it has been one challenge after another.

In 2024, I underwent emergency aortic surgery, a life-saving procedure that required a long and difficult recovery. While I was still trying to regain my strength, I received another devastating diagnosis: Stage 3 breast cancer.

Since then, my life has been filled with surgeries, treatments, doctor's appointments, medications, and the emotional and physical toll that comes with battling cancer. Because of my health, I have been unable to work, and the financial burden has become overwhelming.

I applied for Social Security Disability benefits in 2024, hoping for some financial stability while I focused on my recovery. My application was denied. I appealed in 2025, only to be denied again in 2026. As I continue pursuing the benefits I desperately need, I have been left without the income necessary to meet even my basic needs.

I am currently facing unstable housing while also trying to cover medical co-pays, prescription medications, transportation to treatments, food, utilities, and other everyday living expenses. Every day is a battle—not only against cancer but also against the financial hardship that has come with it.

Asking for help is not easy, but I have reached a point where I cannot do this alone. Any donation, no matter the amount, will help relieve the burden of medical costs and basic living expenses so I can focus on what matters most: fighting cancer and healing.

If you are unable to donate, sharing my story with others would mean the world to me. Your kindness, prayers, encouragement, and support give me hope during one of the most difficult times of my life.

Help the Merritt Family Through This Difficult Time

<div>My granddaughter, Sydney Bassett is a 19 year-old, smart and beautiful young lady with a very bright future. Since my retirement in 2007, I have played a crucial role in her life and education, taking her to and from school and other extra- curricular activities. She has always been a hard-working student from elementary to middle and to high school. She was on the Honor List at Seabrook Intermediate School for talented students preparing for science careers. She went to Clear Falls High School where she also excelled in Advanced Placement (AP) Programs. She participated for three years in the Duke University TIP (Talent Identification Program) for Gifted and Talented Students in Georgetown, Texas. She is highly motivated, ambitious, and determined to succeed. She planned to finish high school quickly and attend university to study medicine. She was due to graduate earlier than normal in December 2021.

<div>On the morning of October 9, 2021 Sydney was involved in a horrifying car accident with 3 other girls. The driver of the car somehow lost control of her vehicle and instead of pumping the brake, she hit the gas, accelerated, and crashed into a tree. Sydney was sitting in the back passenger seat and was wearing her seat belt when the accident occurred. The seat belt prevented her from being thrown forward, but caused more damage by its restriction than it prevented.

<div>Of the four passengers, Sydney sustained the worst and most severe injuries of all. She suffered a compound fracture of her right arm’s humerus bone that had to be immediately repaired, multiple body and facial lacerations and broken front teeth. The most significant injury she sustained was the Brachial Plexus Injury in which the brachial plexus nerve roots were torn (avulsed) from the cervical spine at C6-T1. She also suffered traumatic brain injury that continues to affect her short-term memory and eye movement.

<div>Sydney has undergone multiple arduous surgeries to (a) repair the broken humerus, (b) harvest nerves from parts of her body and fuse them to the broken cervical nerves to help them heal and regrow and (c) suture and repair the multiple lacerations all over her body. And yet there are more surgeries to be done. This accident and its effects changed all her life and ultimately her hopes and dreams.

<div>Luckily, Sydney is a fighter. Even with the pain and continual visits to orthopedic surgeons, neurosurgeons, and physical therapists, she still completed high school early (as planned) in December 2021 and walked with her graduating class in May 2022. Due to her right hand being completely paralyzed, Sydney painstakingly learned to write, although slowly and imperfectly, with her left hand. Still, she faces many challenges as normal everyday chores are difficult, if not impossible, to perform with only her left hand.

<div>Through it all, Sydney has remained determined to continue pursuing her dreams of going to college. She enrolled and currently attends Temple University in Pennsylvania. During her first year, Sydney experienced overall negative effect and feeling regarding her physical disability. She met with physical challenges in classes and labs. Sydney’s physical condition has manifested complications in nearly every aspect of her life, both in and outside of school. It has been heartbreaking for those close to her, to see the light dimmed on such a radiant, vibrant hard-working girl. However, she has learned THERE IS HOPE. Her team of surgeons believe, with a nerve grafting, muscle grafting and stem cell therapy, she can regain functionality of her right hand and arm.

<div>Although this news is exciting and has given Sydney hope, the United States does not permit stem cell therapy, and Insurance companies do not cover it. Stem cell therapy is very expensive and most people who need it cannot afford it, like Sydney. Since the cost of the transplant microsurgeries are incredibly unaffordable in the USA and stem cell therapy is not allowed, we are appealing to all well-wishers to help Sydney regain the use of her hand, by raising funds to allow her to travel overseas to receive the surgery and therapy needed. There is a center in Aachen, Germany, that specializes in nerve and muscle transplant microsurgery. There is also a center for Stem Cell Therapy in neighboring Frankfurt. The plan is to follow the surgeries with stem cell therapy to enhance regenerative fast healing.

In the span of a little over two years the Reynolds Family has been devastated my two major tragedies. The boys Luke (Age 15), Brock (Age 14), Mick (Age 10), Zeke (Age 6), and Drake (Age 4) now face great uncertainty as they try to move on without their parents. The loss of a parent is always hard, but the loss of both parents at such a young age is hard to fathom.

Reynolds Family Memorial Fund

While the diagnosis is grim, Zach has been told by every doctor who has consulted with him that he is strong, and in a very good position to fight and stop the cancer's progression. He was told that every day he is alive is an opportunity to keep fighting until a cure is discovered. He was told that there are many treatments pending clearance with the US Food and Drug Administration and to keep fighting to live.  <br /><br />Zach and Ada are using their own resources to get Zach the treatment and care he needs; however, their resources are limited and they need the help and support of others in order to continue to save his life and get through this new, terrifying reality.<br /><br /><br /><strong>A Brief Background</strong><br />Zach is a friend to everyone he meets. He is utterly generous, super smart and is all around amazing. He is loved by so many and is wholly deserving of our love and support. He's that guy that always has your back and will go above and beyond to help anyone in need. He loves the outdoors, he loves to play piano and guitar, he loves to spend time with his friends and family, and can tell a great joke while always putting a smile on anyone's face.  <br /><br />He is also a lawyer who is passionate about his work for his clients. He loves life and lives it to the fullest as many who know him will attest.  So much of that life was taken away from him so quickly when he started to notice his first symptoms in May of 2018 and as he started to lose his ability to use the right side of his body, and some of his speech.  He is a very intelligent man and that is all still there, but the physical limitations have taken away much of what he enjoys-- except for his love and devotion to his wife and daughter, and his determination to stick around to spend as much time as possible with them.<br /><br />Zach and his wife Ada moved to New Zealand from Houston, Texas, in 2011. They fell in love with New Zealand and made it their home while establishing the first and only US law firm in the country. With their daughter Olanna who was born in July 2017, they have built a beautiful, peaceful life in Auckland, New Zealand. That life has been turned upside down since Zach's diagnosis.<br /><br /><br /><strong>The Diagnosis</strong><br />In December 2018 emergency life-saving surgery and a biopsy confirmed that Zach had a <strong>Grade 2 Diffuse Astrocytoma brain cancer</strong> in the right cerebellum. In February 2019, additional testing revealed the gut-wrenching news that Zach’s cancer had <strong>Molecular Features of Glioblastoma Stage IV and further imaging revealed that it had spread into his brain stem and into the base of the stem called PONS</strong>. <br /><br /><br /><strong>The Treatment</strong><br />Once hearing the word "cancer" Zach and Ada decided to move their family home to Houston, Texas, for Zach’s treatment at M.D. Anderson and to be closer to family and friends for support. After a long and painful fight, treatment started <strong>March 4, 2019, Zach started chemo radiation treatment at M.D. Anderson with the goal of stunting the growth of the tumor and stabilizing his condition. This was achieved and Zach and Ada were able to move their family back to New </strong><span style="font-weight:900;">Zealand, thanks to generous donations, </span><strong>where his care is being continued. </strong><br /><br /><strong>Zach continues to undergo rigorous rehabilitation to ensure that his physical disabilities caused by the tumor will not become permanent so that he can regain most of his physical functions once he has recovered from treatment. </strong> <br /><br /><strong>With this type of cancer and its precarious location, the next steps remain uncertain. Currently Ada and Zach are continuing treatments in New Zealand, which requires them to mostly pay out-of-pocket since they are working outside of government funding in order for Zach to been seen quickly and handled with personal care. </strong><br /><br /><br /><strong>The Reality</strong><br /><strong>Their reality right now is financial hardship with limited resources and a terrifying uncertainty about the future of their young family.</strong> With medical-related expenses that have already totaled more than $150,000 USD, their living expenses have become unmanageable. <br /><br />They need as much support as we can give them as quickly as we can. This can come in any shape or form and will be received with much love and gratitude. <br /><br /><br /><strong>FINANCIAL WAYS TO SUPPORT THEM:<br /><br />*One-time donation of any amount</strong> to help cover expenses. The Johnson family has suffered a tragic loss in a house fire. About me
