<div>The past two years have been trying for our friend. First, her job was eliminated—and away went the benefits so many of us count on through our full-time employment. Shortly after being laid off, Karin learned she had cancer. After many months of treatment, Karin was able to beat back cancer, yet the intensity of the treatment kicked her butt—physically, emotionally, and financially.

<div>Several months after enduring cancer treatment, Karin slipped on the ice and fractured her wrist—an accident that demanded six months of physical therapy to regain strength and mobility. Finally, last October, Karin was biking home and was hit by a distracted driver hurriedly turning right. Karin was taken to the hospital with a badly broken arm and fractured sacrum.

<div><strong>“Four tidal waves in two years” is how she’s described it to us.</strong>

<div>The last 24 months have been spent managing her health care—cancer treatment, many doctors appointments, and ongoing physical and occupational therapy from both accidents—along with mounting bills.

<div>In a state of fragile health, Karin has had to navigate a complex health insurance system, all while trying to stay on top of bills and rent. The experience has been a roller coaster—on one hand, defeating, overwhelming, isolating, and energy-zapping. On the other, it’s been a test of courage—a challenge to overcome fear and empower herself to “get back on the bike” both literally and metaphorically.

<div>Through it all, Karin is still showing up for us. <strong>Now, let’s show up for her. </strong>Let’s help her move beyond being a full-time patient. Let’s help get her out from beneath a pile of bills and a load of debt. <div>We have known Carlos since 2014 when he built an addition onto our home. Since then, h<span style="font-family:inherit;font-size:1rem;color:inherit;">e has provided many home repair </span>services -- anything from fixing an air conditioner on a 100-degree day, to painting our whole house, to repairing nearly anything that breaks down on the regular. His work ethic is unparalleled. He's a perfectionist, always aiming for 100% satisfaction from his clients who, after working with Carlos, always become raving fans!

<div>As people around us witnessed his kindness, character, and empathy (not to mention his fantastic work), they hired him too. My mother-in-law, neighbors on to our right, left and across the street, my good friend, her good friend, and my aunt and uncle. Just to name a few.

<div>Everyone, without hesitation, has referred him to others. And, when I shared this news with them, without taking a beat, they all offered to do whatever it would take to help get him back home.

He's a kind, funny, charming and empathetic person, and he always shows concern for our well being! (Sometimes, when I see his truck on the street at a neighbor's home, I'll also see him roaming around my house picking up random trash that may have blown into my yard! That's just the kind of person he is. He doesn't look for thanks. He just wants to do good in the world and for his people.)

Magnus was taken from us while doing what he loved most, riding his bike. Magnus’s family is strong, but support from their community will go a long way to give them time to grieve.

<div>Magnus’s greatest joy in life was cycling after playing flag football when he was younger. He was also an accomplished skier.

<div>He began cycling when he was eight and quickly rose through the cycling ranks. Magnus’s journey in cycling was driven by a tireless work ethic and a deep desire to achieve his personal best. He was proud to represent his community and country around the world. Magnus accomplished many of the goals he set for himself. Magnus won the USA cyclocross national championship in December 2021. He raced in the UCI cyclocross world championship in 2022 and 2023 and was scheduled to race in the UCI mountain bike world championships on August 10. He raced for Boulder Junior Cycling and represented the United States at various international events. He was to start his senior year in high school in a few weeks.

<div>Magnus leaves behind his parents Jill and Michael and his brother Eero and countless friends worldwide. The family will use any contributions as needed for support of moving through this tragic period and to honor his legacy.

Children left parentless after Memphis shooting

Atticus passed away on January 10, 2018 after a valiant fight against the most aggressive kind of brain cancer that exists called a glioblastoma. He was 26years old. Atticus was born on May 24, 1991. His parents brought him home to Latigo Canyon in Malibu, CA the day he was born and it was there that he passed away on January 10, 2018. Atticus was a maker, an inventor and an admirer of all things sensible and beautiful. There was never a thing he felt he could not do, whether it was pioneering Calculus D/E at Malibu Highschool, attending Berkelee School of Music’s summer camp in Boston, MA to study jazz guitar, painting his Volvo matte black, studying product design at Stanford University’s d.school from where he graduated college or playing in the Stanford marching band. His enthusiastic, hands-on approach was obvious when he brewed batches of beer, worked at the family business, AFX Studio, as a lab technician, and when he invented the grip-clip (a small device that attaches your pencil to your eyeglasses) for his senior project at Stanford, which he and a classmate, Blake Crowe, “Kickstarted” and took to market. Atticus was 20 years old when he was dealt a difficult hand - a brain tumor. Yet, even when the diagnosis became more grim a couple of years ago that the tumor had returned as a glioblastoma, the worst of the brain cancers, he spent no time in fear or self-pity. He lived with joy and intensity, offering laughter, friendship and an easy smile. In 2016, he and his soulmate Lina Bardovi, renovated a van and pursued life on the back roads of America. Atticus adored the American landscape and felt a profound freedom living off of it. Over his lifetime, Atticus had adventures in eight countries, 20 States, and took three trips to Burning Man. His final months were spent with those he cherished. These savored memories include camping trips, dart tournaments, Dodger games, delicious meals, strong coffee and always music. Atticus is survived by his devoted sister, Isabelle; mother and father Heather and David Anderson, grandparents on both sides and his beloved dog, Boo Radley. A memorial service will be held at Malibu West Beach Club on Feb 10 at 4pm for friends and family.<br /><br />As for the GoFundMe campaign, in order to honor one of Atticus’ favorite ways to spend his time - traveling in his and Lina’s renovated Ford van to explore the great outdoors of the United States National parks, we are collecting donations for the National Park Foundation in his name. <div>Sarah Debbink Langenkamp was tragically killed on Thursday, August 25, while riding home from our sons' new elementary school in Bethesda, Maryland. Sarah was the mother of our two young sons and a U.S. Diplomat with the State Department for 17 years. We had just moved to Bethesda after our evacuation from Ukraine. There, she had been in charge of programs to help the country's anti-corruption institutions and shepherd millions of dollars in U.S. assistance to police, border guards, and other non-military security institutions.

<div>Her ride that day, planned on her cell phone, took her on designated bike routes through residential neighborhoods and the Washington-Bethesda Capitol Crescent trail. For a few hundred yards, it took her along River Road -- a busy commercial route where a bike lane competes with cars and industrial traffic for space as the road becomes State Highway 190.

<div>Friends know that our commitment to biking is linked to our deep belief in living a life that is healthy, humble, and green. Sarah did not need to show the world she was a successful professional, diplomat, leader, and role model. Her grace, intelligence, kindness, and deep commitment to promoting U.S. interests around the world was shown in her work and actions. To carry out this important mission, Sarah rode a bike -- almost every day.

<div>Sarah and I have been lifelong and committed cyclists and regularly commuted to work all over the world, including in Ukraine, Côte d'Ivoire and Washington, D.C. During this period, we have seen how cities all over America, and the world, increasingly boast of making their cities "walkable and bikeable." At the same time, we are seeing how the statistics show that cyclist and pedestrian deaths are climbing all over the country. Make no mistake--there is a driver and a company that is primarily responsible for Sarah's death, and our search for accountability is important. It is not enough to prevent future deaths, however.

<div>This fundraising effort aims to work with local and national cycling safety organizations to advocate for safer bike routes, including this particular stretch of road. If cities truly wish to make themselves walkable and bikeable to attract workers and talent, they need to do more than paint lines and bike symbols on roads. Without strong laws and law enforcement, proper bike lane protection, truck/auto driver education, and safer trucking regulations -- such lanes are only death traps, luring innocent victims like Sarah toward them. They result in tragic deaths that leave children without parents and the world without its most talented and committed individuals. Cities should not boast of having "bike lanes" when bikers are needlessly and repeatedly killed on them, as they have been this year.

<div>I have created this account with an ambitious goal of $50,000 to help organizations already working on bike safety. I am doing this because I am furious about Sarah's death, and I am personally committed to ensuring our mission to increase bike safety is realized. Our aim will be to conduct government advocacy, raise public awareness, hire legal assistance, and improve driver education. We will strive to develop innovative tech solutions to create a world where bikers are safer. These could include apps that rate the safety of bike routes, alert bikers of locations where accidents have occurred, or simply note routes that are unsafe. It could also include the development of vehicle sensors to warn of the presence of a biker on a road.
