<div>On the night of Saturday June 29th,  life as we knew it changed forever when someone hit Juan with a car and left him lying in the road like he was nothing. Juan in fact was somebody, he was the man I spent 21 years with and raised our 3 kids with, he was a father, a grandfather , a son ,a brother , an uncle , a friend and a manager at the Santa Barbara Vons . In a matter of seconds he was taken away from us and we do not have any answers since the driver is still at large. Please help his kids ,myself and his family lay him to rest and have a proper burial that he deserves by either donating , or sharing this fundraiser any help is appreciated. <div>Greetings and Blessings my wonderful community of friends, family and acquaintances (some of whom I have yet to meet!), Kiyoko Soaring-Eagle here. As you may or may not know, I was hospitalized for 13 days with severe pneumonia so progressed my doctor told me that "I could have died".
</div>

<div>My extreme condition required emergency surgery and the insertion of draining tubes into my lungs---where I had contracted a salmonella infection. Unfortunately, while hospitalized, I picked up a staph infection and anemia. However, I feel that this last infection was a kind of blessing as it kept me from being transferred to a secondary, rehab facility--I did not have the energy or strength to adjust to a new environment. So I remained at Cottage Hospital where I was able to use my energy to heal before returning home.
</div>

<div>After I was released, it took me several weeks to get back on my feet enough to be able to gradually resume my work as a massage therapist. Though my insurance covered some of my expenses, I have not been able to recoup the amount of income I lost or pay for non-cove red medical expenses. These costs are about to $17,000. I am adding $3,000 to my goal though as I have been doing without needed alternative health care of late (acupuncture and network chiropractic). Having these uninsured service will help me complete my recovery faster.

<div>My wife and I first met Thepo in 2019 when we volunteered to provide a place to stay for a group of Tibetan Buddhist monks visiting the US to promote World Peace. He has become one of our dearest friends. Recently he shared a very personal story with me. I hope he will not mind if I share it with you.
</div>

<div>At some point in his life, Thepo decided he was no longer going to be a monk. The time came when he must go before the Dalai Lama and deliver the news. He was very scared.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>As I recall his account the response of His Holiness to the news was something like this:

<div>HH: "You no longer want to be a monk? That's okay."
</div>
<div>Thepo surprised: It is?
</div>
<div>HH: "Yes, yes, no problem. But... YOU STILL MUST DO THE WORK... You must share your knowledge and serve your community as if you were still a monk."

<div>And he has spent his life doing good works. Thepo Tulku is a revered spiritual leader, beloved Buddhist teacher and world-renowned human-rights activist who has dedicated his life to spreading love, compassion and wisdom. Thepo is known in the Tibetan community as well as here in his adopted homeland for his selflessness and dedication to helping others. He is a joyful and humble man who has impacted countless lives through his teachings and guidance.

<div>Thepo Tulku, needs your help. You may be surprised to learn that a person who has spent their entire life in the selfless service of others may end up with nothing to retire on, but this is the case with Thepo.

<div>Thepo currently lives in Santa Barbara where he earns a living working as a food server at Renaud's Patisserie Cafe in Arlington Plaza on State Street. Thepo loves his day job but my wife and I feel that if he decides at some point to retire and devote full time to his work helping others, he should have that option without worry. It is up to all of us to ensure that he can retire comfortably when that time comes.

<div>Thepo has an incredible life story. Born in Tibet, as a young child he was recognized as the 8th Thepo Tulku. In 1959, when he was only five years old and living in the capital city of Lhasa, tens of thousands of Tibetans took to the streets in protest against China’s invasion and occupation of their homeland a decade earlier. The revolt was brutally crushed and Thepo was forced to flee for his life. Escaping into the Himalayas, the young boy was carried through the mountain paths on the shoulders of monks who were shepherding the Dalai Lama into India.

<div>Thepo has given so much to others throughout his life and it is now time for us to give back to him. By ensuring that he has a comfortable retirement, we can show our gratitude for his many years of service and allow him to continue spreading love and compassion in his own unique way for many years to come.

Unfortunately, it is difficult for Rose to fund medical school because she is considered a non-resident/non-citizen for immigration purposes. So she does not qualify for many federal aid resources available to medical students who are United States citizens.

<div>Rose grew up on a small farm in Kenya with her parents, who practiced subsistence farming. Even though many girls in her country don't get an education, Rose excelled academically and was selected to attend Kenya high school, a national high school in Nairobi.

<div>During her childhood in Kenya, Rose witnessed family and fellow villagers succumb to illness and remembers when some patients were misdiagnosed for insufficient healthcare resources. Many of these illnesses were treatable, but it was often too late because the healthcare centers were many miles from the village and only accessible by foot. These memories inspired her passion for medicine, and she hopes to give back to her own country someday.

<div>Rose would like to specialize in Emergency or Internal medicine critical care. This interest was sparked through her experience working in the Emergency Department at the Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital. Rose was part of a team that delivered emergency treatment. She learned a lot about health insurance, patient confidentiality and the various software that are used from the time a patient is admitted to when they are discharged.

I completed my third Peace Walk for Tibet on July 6, 2022 which coincides with His Holiness the Dalai Lama's Birthday.

<div>In 2019, I started a program bringing volunteers to Nepal. Unfortunately, after three amazing <a href="https://www.backpacker.com/trips/adventure-travel/hiking-and-volunteering-in-nepal-with-all-hands-and-hearts-and-backpacker-magazine/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">trips</a> —and some 150 days of collective volunteer labor building rural schools—the pandemic halted our efforts.

<div>It’s been a long two years for everyone—but that’s especially true for the people of Nepal, who have seen the trekking economy crash and had to endure other pandemic stresses. In spring 2022, we're finally able to return to Nepal with a new group of volunteers. In April, we're going to help build a public health clinic, which addresses a critical need in the village of Kakani, in the mountains outside of Kathmandu.

<div>The health clinic project is managed by a Nepal-based nonprofit called the Mother and Children Arts Foundation. All funds raised will be donated to that organization. We have already raised $3,000 for the health clinic through trip fees paid by the volunteers. Now I'd like to match that figure with this fundraising effort.

<div>A loving father, dedicated husband, generous friend, and renowned plein air artist in Santa Barbara and beyond, Chris Potter suddenly fell ill earlier this month, finding it almost impossible to breathe. Ten days later, he was diagnosed with an aggressive form of lung cancer. Additional scans confirmed that the cancer had not moved to his brain, and forthcoming tests will determine whether the cancer has spread to other parts of his body.
</div>

<div>Since November 1, Chris has been unable to breathe regularly, due to a large tumor pressing on his lungs and esophagus. That makes every day a waking nightmare for his entire family, including his wife, Julie, his 15-year-old son, Malakye, and his 13-year-old daughter, Zenia.
</div>

<div>The battle begins soon with months of chemotherapy and radiation treatments, followed by a full year of immunotherapy.
</div>

<div>Amidst the chaos, Chris Potter was able to reflect on his ongoing ordeal. Here is what he would like us to know:<br /><em> <br />I just had the hardest week of my life. I haven't been feeling good for the past three months, with brain-splitting migraines, chest pain, low energy, and anxiety.<br /> <br />I finally saw a doctor about a month ago to discuss these things. They gave me a physical, which came out fine, and prescribed anxiety pills. The anxiety was culled, but my physical symptoms worsened.<br /> <br />Two Sundays ago, I noticed that all my fingernails were curving into my skin, a disgusting Gollum-like affliction known as digital clubbing. This was a sign of something seriously wrong. I once again went to the doctors to figure out the cause, and they determined a CT scan of my chest was in order.<br /> <br />Later that evening, we got the call: There is a large mass in my chest. I’ll never forget hearing those words. Pure terror, my world collapsing in on itself. I immediately felt so sorry, not just for myself, but for all the people around me that would have to hear this news. I’m so sorry Julie, you don’t deserve this.<br /> <br />I went to the ER that evening as I couldn’t get a full breath and my headaches were debilitating. The doctor was very concerned about the headaches. He had seen the extent of the growth revealed by the chest scan and wanted to scan my brain as well. Then came more terror waiting for the results, alone in a hospital bed in the middle of the night, to find out if I had fucking brain cancer. The CT didn’t show anything, but they wanted to do an MRI as well.<br /> <br />The next day, we saw a pulmonologist, who took the first look at the mass. It had completely blocked the bronchial airway to the right lung, collapsing it. It also was blocking the esophagus, causing more constrictive breathing. We had the biopsy done the next day.<br /> <br />Then another waiting game — not just waiting, but waiting with difficulty breathing and coughing up blood from the biopsy. Fistfuls of steroids, antibiotics, painkillers, Xanax. Just stay alive, just breathe, just stay positive. Like everyone tells you, that's the most important thing. It's also the hardest thing to do for five days wondering if this godforsaken disease is even treatable.<br /> <br />The only thing that got me through this was Julie. She is so strong. Our bond is so strong. We love each other dearly. I felt our connection during this whole crisis, not just as a feeling or a thought, but a tangible lifeline in this world. Then I felt all of the support from my kids, my family, my friends, and all of the people I have affected through my art. I feel truly loved and supported.<br /> <br />Then we got the call a couple days ago. I have an aggressive form of cancer, at least stage 3. I wailed, I sobbed, I let the reality soak through me.<br /> <br />I looked up at the sky and the trees and decided I wanted to live. I wanted to continue my work, I wanted to continue my love for the world and the people around me. In that moment I had a surreal out of body experience. I felt all of the connections I have made throughout my life like a great web of energy — all of us supporting each other in our thirst for life and love and connection. This is the meaning of life.<br /> <br />I love all of you. Thank you so much for being a part of my life. I’ll do everything I can to stick around for you.</em><br /><br /><img src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/61037991_1636925778312289_r.jpeg" alt="61037991_1636925778312289_r.jpeg" width="100%" media_type="3" /><br />Chris’ decision more than a decade ago to ditch corporate life and become a full-time artist is an inspiration to many. His artworks adorn restaurants, offices, public spaces, and private homes around the world. They reflect a life centered on healthy living and being present with nature. His art encourages us to slow down and appreciate the world and landscapes around us, to pay more attention to shapes and light and colors, to focus on our breath, and to be more mindful of how meaningful nature is to our well being. He's not just painting because he is gifted; his talent comes from his ability to stop and let every detail in.

<div>Chris will fight this disease with all of his might, but the struggle will be physically, emotionally, and psychologically grueling. Even when he wins the war, Chris will have lost months of income from not selling his original art, which is the primary financial support for his family. He is unable to paint right now and also cannot manage the sale of his original pieces during this time. That will persist until he is healed. <div>Over the years, Chris has lent his artistic and fundraising support to countless organizations and causes, including the Mental Health Association, Downtown Santa Barbara, the Arthritis Foundation, SCAPE, and countless schools, charities, and educational programs. We need to do everything in our collective power to uplift our friend as he faces the most challenging crisis of his life.

For those of you on facebook, you can see his occasional posts there as well. One bit of news is that Gerry's book is now available on Amazon for $25, or just $5 on Kindle (not sure how that happened). On a cell phone, Amazon just shows the Kindle version, click on that and THEN you see the $25 book version. On a laptop or computer, you DO see the book version upfront for $25. Gerry gets all the profits from the book sales. <div>Here are the latest posts from Gerry: "Aloha. A lot has been going on. I have been looking for the next step. I've settled on longevity. Humans were given 1000 years of life in the beginning. Now days we are lucky to survive 100 years. We were meant to live much longer. At one time an average life was 45 years. We are back up to around 80 now, but advancing slowly. My quest now is to measure my life in 1000s of years with 15,000 Earth years as a goal. In that time, I would see 3 or 4 Anunaki years. One Anunaki year is equivalent to 3600 Earth years. I expect to fail. I'm sure to fail. But that has nothing to do with my quest. I'm frail and sure to lapse, but perhaps others will succeed if I try and fail, yes? Chakas are an important part of it. Our top chakra is the God Chaka. God is real. God gives unnatural abilities as we age. I find i can reverse cancers, and brain disorders in others. Maybe in myself as well. Our body can live thousands of years but we mentally kill ourselves. I think, if we could stay out of the way, we could live a much longer lifetime." "I still work and run to catch the bus home after work every day. You would laugh at my slow pace now. A FEW days ago, as I was running to catch the bus, I had a head incident. I guess I stopped running in the middle of the street and hit a car. I couldn't lift my head off the hood of the car for several moments. But finally I recovered enough to lift my head and made it to a bench where I finally recovered enough to get on the Hawaii Kai bus. Sometimes my head clears and it seems fine. But then, it goes off again. Weird head, I guess." &gt; When I was 3 years old, my alcoholic dad beat me up real bad and broke a major artery feeding the head. My head developed a bypass and I didn't die, but when they took an extra of my head, they see a very weird major arterial route in my brain. &gt; But, other than that, I'm fine.

<div>Gerry Lindgren gave his all, training harder than any American runner ever had, winning many titles and races in high school, college and beyond. He represented the USA in the 1964 Olympics at age 18 in the 10,000m.

<div>Do you remember when he beat the Russians at age 18 at the L.A. Coliseum by sprinting at the 4-mile mark in the 10,000m in front of 40,000 track fans? He made the 1964 Olympic team in the 10,000m, also at age 18, just out of high school! Gerry would go on 88 mile runs, do “6 to 8 times 880y in 1:56-58” in workouts. His 8:40 2-mile in high school against Ron Clarke lasted 40 years. During college at Washington State Gerry won 11 track and cross country NCAA titles in 3 years. He set American Records and a World Record (in the 6-mile with Billy Mills).

<div>Gerry feels that the purpose of his running was to allow him to serve as a role model for others. He helped create the running boom of the 1970’s. He was motivated to run to bring out the best in the competitors around him. He was famous for going out fast (61 first 440 in college 2-miles) and for sprinting in the middle of long races.

<div>Gerry’s HS coach Tracy Walters writes “Into this environment (of the early ‘60’s) came a 5’6”, 118 pound squeaky voiced high school runner who had a great deal of pride and faith in his country and possessed a burning desire to elevae distance running in whatever way he could… Having just graduated from high school, he was able to beat most of the best runners in the world. He stood alone and fought for justice in the conflict between the NCAA and AAU and showed great courage in his desire for fairness”.
