I never imagined I would find myself in this position, but today I am reaching out for help during one of the hardest times of my life. I was injured on the job and, shortly afterward, I lost my job. I am still receiving treatment for a serious injury to my right hand. While my medical bills are being covered, I currently have no income. Because my hand is injured, I have been unable to find new employment, as most employers are hesitant to hire someone who cannot fully use their hand. I am also a diabetic, so managing my health while dealing with this injury has made life even more challenging.

 Right now, I need help covering basic living expenses such as housing, utilities, groceries, transportation, and other everyday necessities while I recover and wait for my medical status to change so I can return to work. I am also waiting for my unemployment benefits. As a nurse, I have dedicated my career to caring for others. I have always been the one helping those in need, never expecting that one day I would be the person asking for help. I am the sole provider for my household, and I also help support my elderly mother who lives abroad. Not being able to provide for my family has been incredibly difficult.

My dear friend and coach Angela Downey has just suffered the sudden and tragic loss of her mother Charlene, who in recent months left her beloved work at Fort Fisher Aquarium to care for Angela’s ailing father Willie. Angela has been by her side as much as possible to support this effort. If you know Angela, you know how deep her sense of love for and commitment to her family is, and you know what a devastating loss this must be. Angela, like her mother and grandmother before her, is dedicated to service and giving. She spreads herself so thin in the interest of improving the lives of others and providing for her family. In recent years she has suffered tragic personal setbacks and has been working hard to rebuild. <div>My name is <strong>Charles</strong>. I'm one of seven children to my mother, <strong>Margaret</strong>. She was a <strong><em>superhero</em></strong> in her own right. She survived so much, including losing one daughter as an infant and one daughter who was <strong>murdered</strong> at the age of 37. How she recovered from that, I will never know.

<div>Just a bit more than a year ago, on December 23, 2023, mom experienced her first in a series of three big strokes, with a few minor strokes, on top of A-Fib.

<div>Our world was flipped upside down. We were left confused and lost because we didn't know how this could have happened and why she wasn't getting better. Just days before, she was still a very active, strong 70-year-old, still climbing on ladders and using power tools.

<div>Because we didn't have the funds to get proper therapy, she spent the last year pretty much as a vegetable, with the exception of a less than minimal outburst of a few words.

<div>Fast forward to today, where the doctors and hospice care gave her <strong>24 hours to live.</strong> We believe her fight is over; her body will be buried and her spirit will live on. Sadly, we are still in the position where giving her a proper burial seems a bit out of reach. We can chip in and pool some money, but not nearly enough for the services she requested and within our religious practices.

Help Us Honor Margaret's Legacy

<font color="#333333">Hi everyone my name is Selma Bento, 7 months ago my twin sister Silvia started her battle to keep her smile. She was diagnosed with a terrible immune disorder called Sjögren Syndrome that is commonly identified with dry eyes and mouth. This caused severe decay and teeth loss despite oral care. This has lead my sister to a long journey involving long trips to UNC School of Dentistry in Chapel Hill NC a 3 hour trip each way from our town in order to get affordable care and treatment. Thanks to so many friends and family , Silvia was able to pay and receive the initial treatment. The healing process has been challenging and in this process it was found out Silvia needed the attention of a more experienced professional to address the need for bone grafting and 3 times more the work the school would be able to offer her due to Silvia’s complicated outcome. She will need at least 8 implants to hold the teeth in place as she experienced severe bone loss. Sadly this has also increased the cost of this necessary treatment at least 3 times than expected. <br />It breaks my heart to hear Silvia say “ let me go put more glue on my teeth lower gum so I can eat”, or go to a restaurant as ask for a knife and fork to eat a simple sandwich. <br />Silvia is the last one who would ask for help, as she has always being one to help anyone in need, but she is worth more than words can say.<br />One can say a person smile is everything and Silvia loves to work with people and always dreamed of having a perfect smile but beneath a smile one needs to properly be able to speak, eat and taste food. <br />I silently suffer seeing my sister still struggling with this 7 months after she lost all her teeth.<br />We ask for your help again. Any donation is deeply appreciated. We know it will all be ok in the end and it’s been a learning journey for her but it can be a lonely road. Please pray for her. Please help me help her. SILVIA’S FIGHT TO KEEP SMILING

Update: Our sweet baby boy, Owen, is in need of a heart transplant. My husband and I were originally told of his congenital heart defect at our anatomy scan while pregnant. He was diagnosed with an extremely rare heart condition called Truncus Arteriosus. This would mean he would need open heart surgery 2-5 days after birth and multiple follow up surgeries throughout his childhood and life. After delivery an echo showed his heart defect to be much worse than originally thought. His heart valves are leaking so severely and his heart trunk is so short that the original surgery would not fix this defect. He now needs a heart transplant in order to survive. We don’t know how long it will take to get a newborn donor heart or if he’ll make it that long. We’re praying he continues to stay strong and make it to the point of transplant surgery and post-op. His oxygen levels have started to drop some, and his labs/X-rays are starting to show some worsening. He’s in amazing hands at Duke, but we are so worried about him. If you feel it in your heart to donate, please know it would be going directly to helping us pay his medical bills, and to help us as pay for things like food, parking, and gas; as we are having to stay 2.5 hours away from our home. More than any monetary donation, we need prayers. Please pray for his strength and stability as we await the perfect donor heart. Please pray that donor heart becomes available to him soon. Please pray for the family of the little one, who has to lose their child, in order to save ours. Please pray for his medical team as they are working around the clock to care for him and keep him alive. Please pray for peace and strength for my husband and I as we try our best to navigate these treacherous waters. Please pray for our sweet Owen as he works so hard just to breathe and stay alive.
